1. Introduction
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This FAQ and Achievement Guide covers Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
for Xbox Live Arcade. The game is a 360 megabyte downloadable
file that costs 1200 Microsoft Points, or $15 US dollars.

Harmony of Despair is the first true multiplayer-focused Castlevania
game (we won't count Castlevania Judgment on Wii). The game supports
up to six players. Solo play is possible (and recommended for some
characters), though building up in multiplayer first is usually a
good idea.

The game does a poor job of explaining its various systems and the
menus are archaic as well. Thus this guide will help you learn to
play and succeed in bringing Dracula and his minions down.

3. Basic Gameplay
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Moves
-----
Attack: Press X (and also Y for some characters). Each character's
basic attack can be upgraded in a unique way, detailed in the
        Characters section of this guide.

Slide kick: Down + X. Slide kicks are very weak, though their damage
does increase a bit with a high ATK stat. Their primary
use is to dodge attacks. Slide kicks are also needed
to earn the Slick Kick Achievement.

Double jump: Press A once to jump and then press it again in the air.

Jump kick: After double jumping, press Down + A while still in the
air. With proper timing, you can jump kick enemies repeatedly
without taking damage. Jump kicking off of enemies, other
players, or Soma's Yorick skull is often required to reach
           high platforms.

Back dash: Left Bumper. This is a useful dodging tool. It can also
be used for back dash canceling, in which a player back
dashes while attacking repeatedly, thus attacking more
           rapidly than otherwise possible.

Personal skill: Right Bumper. Each character's personal skill is
unique. Their utility varies; poor Jonathan's guard
                skill is fairly useless.

Hunter skill: Up to four hunter skills can be assigned at once:
              One each to B button, Down + B, Up + B, and
Forward + B. Each character's hunter skills are unique.
Hunter skills cost MP (the blue meter) to use.

Adjust camera: Click the Right Thumbstick to toggle between
various levels of camera zoom. By default 3 zoom
levels are available, though a fourth can be enabled
               in the Camera Settings menu.

Phrases: Press Back button and then select from several phrases to
communicate with your team. It is far, far better to use
         a headset, of course.

Use Item: Hold Left Trigger and press Right Trigger to use whatever
          item you have equipped.

Dual Crush: These two-player special moves require 80 MP from each
player to perform. Press Right Trigger while standing
next to another player. If he or she also presses it
(and everyone has the MP, natch) the move will execute.
You must use this to get the Grim Synergy Achievement.

Grimoires
---------
A grimoire is a textbook of sorcery and magic, according to Dictionary.com.
Within the game's story, the Grimoire contains the entire history of
Castlevania: all of its monsters and heroes alike. In each chapter,
players spawn at one or more Grimoires. From here, you can change
your equipment, equip items, and view the Monster and Item Compendiums.
Accessing a Grimoire is the only way to do these things during a
chapter, so you may want to backtrack to one if the need arises.
Each chapter except for Six has more than one Grimoire, though, so
you'll often have the opportunity to visit one on your way to the boss.

Changing gear between chapters
------------------------------
Many beginning players don't realize they can change their equipment
and items while in single- and multiplayer lobbies. Simply choose
Preparations and then Main Menu to access the equipment menus, etc.

Chests
------
There are six kinds of chests in Harmony of Despair. When playing
multiplayer, opening any non-blue chest will cause all living players
to receive an item or money from it. The item received is random
(from a certain pool for that chapter, difficulty level, and character).
Skeletal players cannot receive items. The Luck stat does not affect
non-boss chests.

Blue: In multiplayer, blue chests always contain a Water of Life.
Only the person who opens the chest receives it, and you can
only carry one at a time. Never open a blue chest when you
already have a Water of Life!

In single-player, blue chests have the same random items
      as green chests.

Red: These contain varying amounts of money.

Brown: Holds food items or other low value gear. In Chapter Six on
Normal and all Chapters on Hard, these can also be Mimic
       enemies, so watch out!

Green: Contains common gear.

Purple: Contains uncommon gear. There are less purple chests in
each chapter than green ones. These sometime hold very
        strong items and weapons.

Gold: This chest only appears in a boss room after the boss has been
defeated. Many of the best items in the game only come from
gold chests. Soma can also find boss's souls in these chests.

Be warned that a high Luck stat actually reduces the chance of
receiving a rare item from gold chests, as it increases the
chance of getting an uncommon one instead. Rare boss drops are
more likely to occur if a player did not take damage during the
chapter and/or if the chapter is completed in a short amount
      of time.

Skeleton players
----------------
In multiplayer games, when a character dies, he or she becomes a
skeleton. Skeletal players can still move, jump, and attack by
throwing bones. They cannot slide kick or jump kick. Skeletons only
have 100 HP and very low defense. If a skeletal player dies, the team
loses 3 minutes from the chapter timer. Thus it is often best for
skeletal players to stay out of harm's way, especially during boss
fights.

Reviving dead players
---------------------
A skeleton player can be revived using the Water of Life item.
These come from blue chests, of which there is a finite supply (3-5)
in each chapter. If a player holds a Water of Life, an icon will
appear next to his or her character portrait at the top of the screen.
To use the good water, stand close to a skeleton and press Right
Trigger. He or she will be revived and restored to full health and MP.

Remember, never open a blue chest when you have an unused Water of
Life because that wastes one of them! Since there are so few Water of
Life items available, it's often best to prioritize which player you
revive. A dead player who possesses a Water of Life or a highly skilled
player should receive priority over other players.

After a boss has been defeated, you can still revive dead players as
long as a living player has a Water of Life or one remains in the
chapter. That way the dead player can still get an item from the
boss chest.

Game Over conditions
--------------------
Single-player: if the player's HP reaches zero, the game ends.

Multiplayer: the game will end if all players become skeletons.

Single- and multiplayer: the chapter timer in the top-right corner
of the screen starts counting down from 30 minutes. Should it reach
zero it's game over, man. Whenever a skeletal player dies the timer
decreases by 3 minutes, so keep your team's skeletons safe!

Unlocking chapters
------------------
Initially you can only choose to play Chapter One. Complete it in
single- or multiplayer to unlock the next chapter, and so on. When
you complete Chapter Six on Normal difficulty, Chapter One of Hard
difficulty will unlock. Unlocking Hard chapters works the same way
as Normal chapters.

In multiplayer games, the team can only access the highest chapter
number that has been unlocked by every single member of the party.
If one person has only gotten as far as Chapter Two, for instance,
then that's the highest chapter the party can select. The same applies
to Hard difficulty chapters. It's not a huge deal if you're willing
to be patient. As long as a few party members are pretty strong,
they can help weaker party members unlock chapters in no time.

Sharing items between your characters
-------------------------------------
There is no trading of items between players, probably because it would
lead to item duplication exploits. However, all of *your* characters
share the same item pool. So if you find an armor with Alucard that
is also wearable by Jonathan, feel free to equip it on Jonathan. The
same item can even be equipped to multiple characters, which is handy.
Not every character can use every item, though. Many are restricted
by gender or simply to specific characters. If a character cannot
see a particular item you own, that means he or she can't use it.

Mixing up single-player and multiplayer
---------------------------------------
Harmony of Despair is a multiplayer-oriented game, but that doesn't
mean you should only play multiplayer. Progress and items are
shared between both modes, so anything found or unlocked in one is
also available in the other. Having trouble beating a chapter by
yourself? Hop online and recruit some friends or strangers to help
overcome the challenge. Some characters actually build up and
increase their powers better in single-player:

-Charlotte has a much easier time learning spells from enemies when
no one else is killing them. It's a very good idea to learn some
spells offline before hopping online with her.

-Shanoa needs enemies to be alive in order to acquire their Glyphs,
so you may want to grab them offline before switching to
 multiplayer.

Use a headset in multiplayer!
----------------------------
Remember, multiplayer is all about teamwork. If you can't hear or
speak to other players, you are a liability to your team. Dracula's
back, so it's no time to be shy! If you don't own a headset, you
should probably spend some time thinking about what you did wrong
with your life. Get everything in order, turn over a new leaf, and
go buy one already!

Xbox 360 controller got you down?
---------------------------------
It's a well-known fact that the official Xbox 360 controller has
a very inaccurate direction pad. It can make jump kicking, performing
Alucard's weapon-specific special moves, and Jonathan's martial arts
far more of a chore than necessary.

What can you do? Simple! Buy the Hori EX Pad 2 from Amazon or another
online retailer. It has the best d-pad of any Xbox 360 controller,
making fighting game-style motions a breeze. It also has turbo
and autofire functions, which can be helpful for attacking rapidly
in this game (ya cheater). Trust me, Hori Pads make many 2D Xbox
360 games far more enjoyable.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Stats, Attributes, and Ailments
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Stats
-----
Before we look at characters or items, let's establish what teach
stat does. Hey Konami, don't make us figure them out next time!

HP: Hit Points, of course. Lose them all and you turn into a skeleton.

MP: Magic Points. MP fuels spells, glyphs, and subweapon use.
    Recharges over time.

ATK: Attack. The character's attack power.

DEF: Defense. Defense against physical attacks.

STR: Strength. Boosts ATK when physical weapons are equipped.

CON: Constitution. Every two points of constitution raises a
character's DEF by one. May also affect status ailment
     recovery time.

INT: Intelligence. Affects the power of magical attacks.

MND: Mind. Magic resistance. Mind also affects Shanoa and
     Charlotte's glyph/spell acquisition success rates.
Neither MND nor INT affect MP regeneration.

LCK: Luck. Affects the chance of enemies dropping items or souls for
Soma. Luck does NOT affect chests or boss drops in any way.

Each point of Luck raises an enemy's item/soul drop rate
percentage by .01. Most characters start with 5 points of luck,
so if a drop rate is 1.6% with 5 luck points, then 15 luck
points increases the drop rate to 2.6%. It may not seem like
much, but it can make a difference.

Attributes
----------
There are also several icons, called attributes, which represent
specific types of damage and damage resistances. Each character's
base attributes are zero but can be increased or decreased
by equipping items. In the Monster Compendium, red attributes are
an enemy's weaknesses and blue attributes are its resistances.

Name Icon Abbreviation
---- ---- ------------
Strike Hammer STR
Slash Dagger SLA
Pierce Trident PIE
Fire Flame FIR
Ice Snowflake ICE
Lightning Lightning LIT
Petrify Stone PET
Holy Sparkle HOL
Darkness Dark swirl DAR
Curse Eye CUR
Poison Skull POI

Ailments
--------
Some enemy attacks and items cause negative status effects.
The Remedy item cures all ailments, while some items cure only a
single ailment.

Petrify:
A petrified character turns to stone and cannot move. Pressing the
buttons rapidly and/or wiggling the analog stick or d-pad is the
  only way to recover.

Poison:
A poisoned character flashes purple and loses health for several
seconds. Aminita mushrooms and Rusty Food Tins cause poison,
so don't eat them. The Anti-Venom item, as you might think,
  cures poison.

Curse:
A cursed character flashes yellow and loses all MP and cannot
regenerate MP for several seconds. Uncurse Potions will fix a curse.
Could have used those in Drag Me to Hell!

Charm:
Two enemies can charm players: Imps and Dracula.
Imps do so by latching onto a player's head. Defeat the Imp and
  its victim will regain control.

Only female characters can be charmed by Dracula's third form.
Once charmed, they cannot control their actions and will attack
  other players.

6. Chapters
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This section focuses on strategies for the chapters themselves. For
boss strategies, see the Bosses section. To see what items can be
found in each chapter, head to the Chest Contents section.

Chapter One: Caught in the Cradle of Decay
-----------
Based on: Dark Chapel, Cursed Clocked Tower, and Condemned Tower
          areas from Dawn of Sorrow
Music (default): "Ruined Castle Corridor"
Boss music (default): "Into the Dark Night"

Normal Enemies:
Amalaric Sniper (4), Axe Knight (22) Bat (9), Bone Pillar (16),
Flea Man (13), Ghost (respawning), Merman (6), Minotaur (7),
Peeping Eye (5), Skeleton (11), Spittle Bone (5), Zombie (respawning)

Hard Enemies: Coming soon!
Boss: Gergoth
Chests: 5 Blue X Brown X Green X Red X Purple
Breakable walls: 4
Players Spawn: Together (lower left corner)

-Zombies:
The zombies in the starting room will repawn for a little while
before stopping. Starting players should kill a few until one drops
the Hobo Clothes, and then run back to the Grimoire to equip the
 armor.

-Scale room:
Just to the left of the Grimoire in the lower-right corner of the
map, there is a room with a gold scale. Above the left side of the
scale is a green chest, and a little past the right side is a purple
chest. Getting on either side of the scale raises the other side
 until you jump off.

A single player can reach the green chest by jumping on the right
scale until it lowers all the way, then jumping to the left scale
and quickly hopping up to the platform.

The purple chest usually requires two people. One person fully
lowers the left scale and the other person hops onto the right one
and then up to the right platform. Soma players may be able to
reach the platform without help by equipping the Yorick soul
(found in Chapter 2) and then jump-kicking off of Yorick's skull.

-Mirrors:
The mirror to the left of the green chest in the scale room is a
one-way transporter. Stand in front of it and press Right Trigger
to warp to the mirror on the opposite side of the wall. You can
also reach the other mirror by climbing the clock gears below it.

-Going under the boss:
If you proceed up and left from the mirror and clock gears room,
you will eventually reach a room with a Minotaur and a locked
door behind it. The switch to open the door is above that room.

To reach the lever, double back to the first Axe Knight room and
proceed right past the Merman room (this would require flooding
the Merman room or jump-kicking off another player or Yorick skull).
In multiplayer games, another person will usually open the switch
for the person who reaches the door.

The purpose of going through the door? You can clear the enemies
out below the boss. Otherwise you'll have to contend with them
during the boss fight, which is no fun for weaker players. The
first sub-boss room contains two Axe Knights and a flame blocking
the exit to the right. The flame stops intermittently. Pass
through when cuts off and you can start working your way up to the
 boss itself.

-Merman rooms:
Intially there is a room containing water and two Mermen. Below
it is a room with no water and four Mermen. Pull the switch in
the water room to flood the lower room, this allowing players
to use the water to take the right exit of the lower room.

-Drawbridge:
Left of the Grimoire near the center of the map is a switch.
Surprisingly, pulling this switch lowers the drawbridge next to it.

-Lyre rooms:
A lyre is the part of a clock that looks like a pendulum.
 Knowledge is power!

At the top center of the map there are two lyre rooms, one
above the other. Climbing the first is easy. Get on the first
crate and double jump onto the lyre.
The second room contains two lyres. Hop onto the bottom one.
Wait until it swings all the way to the left and then double jump
to the right and onto the top lyre.

-Elevator:
Unless you have a way to move really quickly (Winged Boots, for
instance) the green elevator at the top of the map
requires two people to operate. One or more players ride inside
while another player pulls the switch to lower and raise the
elevator. At the bottom is a Grimoire and a path that leads to
the rooms below the boss. Whoever rides the elevator can
clear out the rooms below the boss if they havem't been cleared
already or just ride back up and attack the boss from the top.
Bypassing the elevator completely works too.

-Swing points:
Two vertical rooms beside the boss room contain swing points.
Shanoa and Julius can use them to climb more easily,
but anyone can traverse the rooms by riding their moving platforms.

-Hard-to-reach chests:
Immediately down and left of the boss's starting position is
a room with a blue chest and a purple one. It can only be reached
after Gergoth breaks his room's floor. When he does this, quickly
hold left to fall into the room. If you miss it, you or another
player can fall from the top and try again.

-Red Licorice: Not as good as Twizzler's?
The bell room has a Red Licorice instant-use item in its top left
corner. Should you take the candy or not? It heals 15 HP and
temporarily adds 5 INT. But it also subtracts 5 LCK, which makes
it harder to get enemy drops or souls for Soma. Decide whether
you want high Luck or not (it's bad for boss drops, remember)
 before grabbing it.

-Breakable walls:
1: In the room left of the room with four Mermen, the lower-right
corner of the wall contains a Tasty Meat.

2: The center of the map has a room with a large circular clock
gear, a moving platform, and spikes at the top. The room to
the right has a blue chest at the bottom. In this blue chest
room, the middle left wall hides a mouth-watering Roast Beef.

3: The vertical room immediately to the left of both lyre rooms
has a Tasty Meat along the left wall, near the top.

4: Three long vertical rooms are located to the right of the
boss room. The middle one has a Boneless Ham along its
    top left edge.

-Secret Item: Bell
In the bell room on the far left edge of the map, slide under the
center bell, stand up inside of it, and jump. A Bell icon should
fall from the bell on the left. Grab it for points.

Chapter Two: Lord of Unseen Strings
-----------
Based on: Lost Village, Demon Guest House, and Garden of Madness
          areas from Dawn of Sorrow
Music (default): "After Confession"
Boss music (default): "Into the Dark Night"

Normal Enemies:
Aliorumnas (4), Bone Pillar (22), Ectoplasm (2), Frozen Shade (4),
Ghost (respawning), Glasya Lebolas (1), Maneating Plant (4),
Moldy Corpse (11), Persephone (4), Skeleton (5), Spittle Bone (3),
  Succubus (2), Treant (6), Une (5), White Dragon (3), Yorick (8)

Hard Enemies: Coming soon!
Boss: Puppet Master
Chests: 3 Blue X Brown X Green X Red X Purple
Breakable walls: 4
Players Spawn: Apart

-Mushrooms:
The Moldy Corpses in this chapter sometimes drop Amanita
mushrooms. You'll want to pick one up to fill out your Item
Compendium, but only once! They poison you for several seconds,
so avoid them after the first time.

-Iron Maidens:
This chapter contains several iron maidens, which are hinged
person-shaped torture devices. Step in one and it will close around
your character, causing massive damage. That does not rock! Many iron
maiden rooms also contain a pushable crate. Pushing a crate onto an
iron maiden serves two purposes: it keeps players from accidentally
stepping into it and prevents the boss from going to that particular
 iron maiden's room.

-Bone Pillars:
Several locations in this chapter contain Bone Pillars can be used as
 platforms to reach high places:

-Above ground, in the middle of the map there are two sets of Bone
Pillars. Use the left one to reach a room with a Succubus and chest,
and the right one to reach a room containing an Aliorumnas and
   another chest.

-Up and right of the boss room is a red room with an
8 skull-high Bone Pillar and two chests. Kill a few skulls until
you can jump onto the Pillar and reach the chests.

-Left of the boss room is a large purple room with two scales and
a Bone Pillar. Do not kill this Pillar! You may need to use it
to clim back up after the boss has left his room.

-Rotating platforms:
At the bottom-left part of the map is a large room with a
White Skeleton and four small platforms. The platforms rotate
when stepped on, so immediately jump after landing one to
reach the next one. The same type of platform also appears in a room
to the right of the boss room.

-Fire room:
To the right of the boss room is a red room with 3 sets of fire traps,
3 weighted switches, and a purple chest. If one player enters from
the bottom and another enters from the top, the flames can be safely
navigated. Step on the lower-right switch, allowing the top player
to grab the Purple chest and step on the next switch. Both players
can proceed to the left and reach the boss, but only if the
switch in a different room that unlocks the boss doors has been pulled.

-Reaching the boss:
Two rooms above the boss room there is a locked door. Head to the right
until you are below the top-right Grimoire and then continue down
and left. Just past the red room with the tall Bone Pillar is
the switch that opens the locked door.

After the door is open, go down to the room left of the boss.
The switch there opens the boss door as well as a door in the
room just below it. The lower door allows players to chase the boss
down after he leaves the room and to return to the boss room for
the chest once Puppet Master is defeated.

-Swing points:
Several rooms contain swing points. Most notably is the one in the
large purple room. Shanoa and Jonathan can use it to save time by
traveling to either top door of the room.

-Breakable walls:
1: In the lower-right corner of the map, one room left of the
White Dragon, is a room containing a Maneating Plant and a food
item in its top-right corner. But it's also got a breakable wall
in the top-left corner with a juicy Roast Beef inside.

2: Two rooms below the top-right Grimoire is a room with a Frozen Shade
and a chest. In the bottom-right corner lies a Tasty Meat.

3: Near the top-middle of the map is a blue chest room. Its lower-right
corner contains another Tasty Meat for your dining pleasure.

4: Left of the large purple scale room with the Bone Pillar is
a tall room with a chandelier at the bottom. The lower-left corner
    possesses a Boneless Ham.

-Secret item: Crown
Defeat the boss and head down two levels to the Piano Room.

Most of the white piano keys are labeled but the black keys are not.
Here we will label the black keys as # (sharps) and b (flats).

Here is what it looks like:

         [#] [b] [#] [#] [b] [#]
[ - ][ C ][ D ][ E ][ F ][ G ][ A ][ B ][ C ][ - ]

The tune you need to play utilizes E flat (Eb) and B flat (Bb).

Jump on the keys in this order:

 F, Bb, G, F, Eb, F, Bb, G

You can hop on the platform above the piano in between keys. The
crown will drop onto the center of the platform when the tune is
 finished.

Chapter Three: The End of Chaos
-------------
Based on: Abyss from Dawn of Sorrow and
Skeleton Cave from Order of Ecclesia.
Trivia: The Cave Troll enemy, which first appears in this chapter, is
actually the Chupacabra in Japanese Castlevania games. The name
was mistranslated in Symphony of the Night and the mistranslation
has been used in every subsequent English appearance.
Music (default): "Phantom of Fear"
Boss music (default): "Piercing Battle Fury"

Normal Enemies:
Axe Knight (10), Bone Pillar (15), Cave Troll (11), Fire Demon (4),
Flea Man (12), Glasya Labolas (2), Imp (respawning), Minotaur (14),
Peeping Eye (1), Skeleton (14), Spittle Bone (3), White Dragon (3)

Hard Enemies: Coming soon!
Boss: Menace
Chests: 3 Blue X Brown X Green X Red X Purple
Breakable walls: 4
Players Spawn: Apart

-Clear blocks:
The clear blocks in this chapter are breakable. Several contain
enemies, which you may want to free and kill before waking up the boss.
Otherwise you'll have to contend with the monsters from the blocks and
 Menace simultaneously.

You shouldn't break the two top left-most blocks immediately, though.
They can be used to reach a green chest. If you break them by mistake,
only Soma's Yorick jump can get up to the chest.

-Yellow platform:
While climbing the left portion of the chapter, you'll encounter a
blue chest guarded by Bone Pillars. Below it is a switch that moves
a large yellow platform. Be sure to pull the switch once so that the
yellow platform moves to the right. This makes it easier for people to
go up and down the left path. Most importantly, the yellow switch
provides a useful platform for attacking the boss's head.

-Hammer time!
At the top of the stage is a giant bone hammer. On the left side
of it there is a switch that swings the hammer. To the right is a wheel
that winds the hammer after it's been swung.

Only step on the hammer switch when you're sure it will hit the boss!
Menace must be awake and standing or jumping near the center of the map
to get hit. After the hammer swings, it can't be used again until
the wheel is fully wound. This takes a lot of hits - use rapid-fire
weapons like Jonathan's Wrecking Ball or Alucard's Yasutsuna sword
 to wind it faster.

-Imp attack!
Both the switch and wheel are guarded by respawning imps. They stop
spawning if you kill enough of them. Both spots are great places to
level Jonathan and Julius's subweapons and Shanoa's Glyphs.
However, on Hard the Imps are quite dangerous; you may wish to skip
 them altogether.

-Swing points:
To the right of the boss's starting position are two swing points.
They lead up to two lovely purple chests. Yorick jumping will not
get you high enough to reach them. But even if you don't have anyone
who can swing up to the chests, it's sometimes possible to get them
anyway. When the Menace backs up, it *may* destroy the blocks to the
left of the chests. If so, you can jump down from above to grab them.

-Breakable walls:
1: In the lower-right corner of the map, where some players spawn,
there is a floating platform. Break the left edge of it to receive
    a Boneless Ham.

2: Along the right edge of the map, just above a blue chest and another
chest, a Cave Troll stands on a platform. The right edge of the
    platform has a Tasty Meat.

3: At the top of the map and just right of the wheel there is an area
with two Minotaurs, some floating platforms, and a food item. Inside
the left edge of the largest floating platform is a bowl of Ramen.

4: The only breakable wall on the left side of the map is right above
the place with several skeletons. The right edge of the platform
over their heads hides Beef Curry.

-Secret Item: Moai
After the boss wakes up and destroys the blocks and platforms in the
center of the stage, fall (Charlotte) or jump kick (everyone else)
through the center of the vortex in the background. If you pass through
the right spot, the Moai appears. It's far easier to get by jump kicking
the boss's head when he's in the center since you'll have more than one
chance to hit the right spot.

Chapter Four: Esquisse of Violence
------------
Based on: City of Haze and Nation of Fools from Portrait of Ruin
Trivia: Esquisse, pronounced 'eh skees,' means the first
sketch of a picture or model.
Music (default): "Gaze Up at the Darkness"
Boss music (default): "Esquisse of Violence"
Normal Enemies:
Aliorumnas (4), Axe Knight (10), Bat (4), Cave Troll (4), The Creature (4),
Dullahan (4), Ectoplasm (3), Flea Man (7), Glasya Lebolas (3),
  Gurkha Master (9), Lerajie (7), Persephone (4), Spittle Bone (8), Witch (4)
Hard Enemies: Coming soon!
Boss: Brauner
Chests: 4 Blue X Brown X Green X Red X Purple
Breakable walls: 4
Players Spawn: Apart

-Breakable walls:
1: The left side of the map has two rooms with Lerajies. The lower room's
right wall has a Kiwi. Yum!

2: The blue chest room at the top-left corner of the map also contains
an Escargot in its left wall.

3: Just below the Dullahan room in the middle of the map is a long room
with a Glasya Lebolas, The Creature, and a Gurkha Master. The left edge
of this room's Mango Mousse Cake is even more delicious than it sounds.

4: Down and right from the Mango Mousse Cake is a room with two Glasya
Lebolas dogs. The vertical room that connects rooms 3 and 4
has a wall with a Rusty Food Tin inside. Eew, don't eat it!

Chapter Five: Song of the Unslakable Blade
------------
Based on: Pinnacle and Clock Tower of Order of Ecclesia
Trivia: It's not as obscure a word as esquisse, but just in case:
unslakable means unquenchable, as in a blade whose thirst
        for blood cannot be quenched.
Music (default): "Ebony Wings"
Boss music (default): "Symphony of Battle"

Normal Enemies:
Aliorumnas (3), Axe Knight (3), Buer (2), Cave Troll (5),
Dead Warrior (3), Disc Armor (2), Dullahan (1), Gurkha Master (3),
Medusa Heads (respawning), Harpy (10), Imp (5), Lerajie (6), Malachi (1),
Nova Skeleton (2), Peeping Eye (4), Sea Demon (2), Skeleton Gunman (9),
Spittle Bone (2), White Dragon (1)

Hard Enemies: Coming soon!
Boss: Death
Chests: 3 Blue X Brown X Green X Red X Purple
Breakable walls: 3
Players Spawn: Apart

-Difficult spawn points:
This chapter has four spawn points, two of which are especially challenging.

If you start at the bottom, it's a matter of wriding the clock lyres
and dodging pendulums. Jonathan players may want to use his martial arts
to get past the pendulums, though properly timed jumps work as well for him
 as anyone.

If you start on the top-left spawn point, it's a matter of riding
moving platforms to the top while avoiding Peeping Eyes. This path is far
easier for Shanoa and Julius because of the swing points. If you have
one of those characters in your group and you are farming this chapter,
try to have that player spawn in this point.

The bottom-right spawn point is the most difficult. Fire traps go on and
off intermittently, so you must time your jumps to climb up the castle. If
the player who spawns here dies and a Sea Demon has spotted him or her,
the Sea Demon will relentlessly hound that player's skeleton.

-Spotlights!
There are two spotlights in this chapter, one on the left and one on the
right. Each light's position is controlled by a switch; step on it to
toggle the position. If you get both lights to intersect and Death
flies into the point where they meet, he'll take 550 damage and head
to the boss room. The spotlight intersection also kills imps. You can
make the spotlights meet in a few different places - I find the room
with the spinning blades (two rooms below the boss room) to be the best
 location.

-Clock hands:
The host player's system time will determine the time shown on the
two clock faces at the top of the map. If the minute hand is near the
15- or 45-minute mark, it can be used as a platform to easily reach the
 mirror rooms above.

-Mirrors:
The two warp mirrors at the top of this map lead to each other.

-Fire trap:
On the left side of the map, a purple chest is guarded by a fire trap
that can only be shut off by a switch in the room to the right. If you
don't have another player to stand on the switch, use Jonathan's martial
arts or Soma's Puppet Master Soul to get through the fire unscathed.

-Elevator action:
On the right side of the map, just right of the Malachi, there lies
a green elevator. Two people are needed to use it - one to flip the
switch and another to ride. The rider should beware of the fire trap
along the elevator's path; use invincible moves like Alucard's mist,
Charlotte's healing, Jonathan's martial arts, or Soma's Final Guard
 to avoid fire damage.

-Locked door:
Directly above the elevator room is a locked door and a switch for
the door. The door can only be unlocked from the left side, not the
 right.

-Hard to reach chests:
Several chests in this chapter can only be reached by either jumpkicking
another player, an enemy, or Yorick's skull. Most notable is the purple
chest directly to the right of the boss room. Hop off a harpy or
 poor Yorick to get it.

-Breakable walls:
1: The central room with two clock gears, just below the room with
two rotating blades, hides a Mango Mousse Cake in its left wall.

2: The bottom-left Medusa Head room with one large clock gear also
has a Kiwi in its right wall.

3: The top-left vertical room with two Cave Trolls (which leads to
the roof and a brown chest) contains Escargot in the top corner
    of the left wall.

-Secret Item: Vic Viper (Gradius)
Unless you have Winged Boots, you'll need at least two people to collect
this item (the person who triggers it normally won't be able move fast
 enough to pick it up).

In the top-right corner of the map there is a long blue vertical room.
Above and to the left are a blue chest and a mirror. The players who
want to collect the item should stand above the room and near the mirror.
The player who triggers the item should stand in the top-right corner
of the blue room (the background of the actual corner is black).
The Vic Viper will fly by very quickly from the right.
The players waiting above can jump to collect it.
A player wearing Winged Boots can actually collect the Vic Viper solo by
hurrying to the top after triggering the item to appear.
If you miss it, you will need to replay the Chapter in order to try again.

Chapter Six: Come Sweet Hour of Death
-----------
Based on: Entrance, Library, Final Approach, and castle areas
          from Order of Ecclesia.
Trivia: The sprites for Dracula's first and second form first
appeared in Dracula X: Rondo of Blood. They are based on
his forms from the original NES Castlevania. His third
form previously appeared in Symphony of the Night.

Breakable walls: 4
Players Spawn: Together (lower left corner)

-Breakable walls:
1: To the right of the first Succubus you'll find a Nova Skeleton and
then a Malachi. Before exiting the room from the top, break the
small lower wall just left of the Malachi to receive a Meat Strip.

2: The first Sea Demon room (in the center of the map) has a piece
of meat sitting on a ledge to the left. You can break part of the
ledge to find a Strawberry Donut.

3: The top-most central room of the map is guarded by the last Final
Guard and a Nova Skeleton. Break the ceiling and you'll see
both a purple chest and a Truffle. 200 HP, baby!

4: Just before the staircase to Dracula, the left outside wall of the
the castle (below the Konami Man spot) holds a Tasty Meat.

12. Secrets and Unlockables
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Secret Items
------------
Each chapter has one secret item from a Konami Famicom (Japanese NES)
game. They don't do anything on their own except for increasing your
stage score, nor do they appear in the Item Compendium. There is no
reward for collecting them all.

-Chapter One: Bell (TwinBee)
 -----------
In the bell room on the far left edge of the map, slide under the
center bell, stand up inside of it, and jump. A Bell icon should
fall from the bell on the left.

-Chapter Two: Crown
 -----------
Defeat the Puppet Master boss and head down two rooms to the
 Piano Room.

The
crown will drop onto the center of the platform when the tune is
 finished.

-Chapter Three: Moai (Gradius)
 -------------
After the boss wakes up and destroys the blocks and platforms in the
center of the stage, fall or jump kick through the center of the
vortex in the background. If you pass through the right spot,
the Moai appears. It's far easier to get by jump kicking the
boss's head when he's in the center since you'll have more than one
chance to hit the right spot.

-Chapter Four: Goemon (Goemon/Mystical Ninja)
 ------------
In the far right edge of the map there is a small black alcove (just
below and to the right of the boss room). Enter it and a Goemon
icon should appear immediately to the left.

-Chapter Five: Vic Viper (Gradius)
 ------------
Unless you have Winged Boots, you'll need at least two people to collect
this item (the person who triggers it normally won't be able move fast
 enough to pick it up).

-Chapter Six: Konami Man (Konami Wai Wai World)
 -----------
When you reach the staircase that leads to Dracula, don't go up it.
Instead climb to the very top of the castle wall just to the right.
Once you reach the right spot, you'll be blocked by an invisible wall
to the right. This will place you just above the breakable wall
 containing a Tasty Meat.

Zoom the camera out a bit. Press and hold Up for five seconds and the
Konami Man icon will fly by (from right to left). Jump to collect it.
If you miss it, you will need to replay the Chapter in order to try
 again.

---------
Soma: Launch the game for the first time.
Alucard: Complete Chapter Six in Single-player mode.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
13. Achievements
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Lifeguard: 10 Points
---------
Description: Bring a comrade back from the dead.
Tips: Play multiplayer for any length of time and you'll surely get
this one. Use the Water of Life item (found in blue chests)
      to revive a skeletal teammate.

Bone Cold Justice: 10 Points
-----------------
Description: Defeat an enemy by hitting back a Skeleton's bone.
Tips: The easiest place to go for this is Chapter 4 because there are
Skeletons near the spawn points. Hit a bone on the way up and
you will deflect it; hitting it on the way down destroys it.
If a bone hits you and bounces into an enemy, killing it, that
      counts too.

Grim Synergy: 10 Points
------------
Description: Defeat a boss using a Dual Crush.
Tips: The first boss, Gergoth, is a good target for this Achievement.
In a two-player game, have both players weaken him a fair amount
and then perform Dual Crushes repeatedly until he dies. Only the
final blow needs to be a Dual Crush.

You can make this easier by equipping items that increase your
MP fill rate, such as dual Sage Rings or the Chaos Ring.

The absolute easiest way to repeatedly Dual Crush would be for
both players to use Charlotte and equip the following items:

-Astral Ring (uses HP as MP)
-Skull Ring (curses you but gives a huge status boost)

Then use Heal Magic repeatedly to fill your HP and MP,
      essentially giving you unlimited HP.

Slick Kick: 10 Points
----------
Description: Defeat a boss using sliding.
Tips: Chapter one's Gergoth boss is again the ideal target for this
Achievement. It's easiest if you play solo since his HP will be
a more manageable 1050 on Normal.

Attack Gergoth's ankles as much as possible until the shackles
on its legs break. Then start spamming slide kicks
(Down + Jump). These will do more damage as your character's
ATK improves, so feel free to work on it when you've buffed
up a bit. Only the final blow needs to be a sliding kick.

Try equipping 2 Skull Rings as they will increase your stats
significantly and you don't really need MP-consuming attacks to
      weaken Gergoth.

Another option is to play as Charlotte with the Heal spell
equipped. That way you can slide kick as much as you want and
      heal yourself if necessary.

Poetic Justice: 15 Points
--------------
Description: Defeat an ally who has been seduced by the enemy.
Tips: The succubus cannot charm players! But you know who can?
      Imps and Dracula.

Imps sometimes attach themselves to a player and control
his or her actions. Have one person try to get seduced by the
imps at the top of Chapter 3 (they are in no short supply) and
then another player can quickly kill the seduced player.

The more difficult option lies with Dracula in Chapter 6.
His third form has an attack that fires pink hearts out in all
directions. If a heart strikes a female character, she will
become charmed. That's your cue to put her out of her misery
      and earn the Achievement.

Play the chapter enough times with a group and you'll likely
get it naturally. Still, you can aim for it by playing with two
or three players. Have the person who wants the Achievement
play as a male character and everyone else as a female.
Then the ladies just need to go after some Dracula loving.
Don't tell me his third form isn't sexy! :)

Vampire Hunter: 15 Points
--------------
Description: Destroy the lord of Castlevania.
Tips: Beat Chapter 6 on Normal. It's easiest to be part of a good
group, but you can go it alone if you're built up enough.
See the Chapters section of this guide for Dracula-hunting tips.

Boned: 20 Points
-----
Description: Defeat a boss with 5 players in skeleton form.
Tips: The hardest thing about this Achievement is just getting six
players on board. Get a full team together and select Chapter
      One on Normal.

The player who can deal the most damage should remain alive
while the other players kill themselves. Use spikes to kill
yourself quickly. The skeleton players should then wait in
a safe spot while the damage dealer takes Gergoth down.

Once the boss dies, all six players will receive the shiny,
      sparkly Achievement.

Grasshopper: 20 Points
-----------
Description: Jump kick 30 times in a row without touching the ground.
Tips: Double-jumping and then pressing Down + Jump performs a jump
kick, right? Well, there are tons of enemies you can
repeatedly jump kick, such as the Chapter One boss or Bone
Towers. But you don't even need enemies in a multiplayer game!
Just jump kick off of another player until the Achievement
      unlocks. What are friends for?

Pack Rat: 20 Points
--------
Description: Collect 300 different types of items.
Tips: Play with multiple characters and grind a lot across both
difficulties and you will eventually get this.

-Each character's unique form of attack counts as an item
       (Soma's souls, Charlotte's spells, Jonathan's subweapons, etc.)
-A character will never find/receive an item that he/she cannot
use, so Soma won't find Jonathan's subweapons, and males won't
       find female armor or accessories.

Thus you should play as at least one male and one female
character if you're trying to get as many unique items as
possible. Soma can find the largest quantity of unique
personal items out of all the characters.

Track your progress by looking at the Item Compendium in
the Main Menu. Items do not have to be in your actual inventory
       to get the Achievement.

Slaughtervania: 20 Points
--------------
Description: Rack up 10,000 enemy kills.
Tips: Commence to killin'! The 10,000 kills can be spread across any
combination fo characters, so don't worry about getting them all
      with just one person.

      Good places to farm kills:
-Chapter 1: Zombies spawn at the starting point.
-Chapter 2: Ghosts spawn in the rooms above the lower-right
                  Grimoire.
-Chapter 3: Imps spawn by the hammer switch and hammer wheel
-Chapter 6: Medusa heads spawn in certain vertical rooms

All of these enemy spawns eventually run out, so you won't be
able to get *all* of the kills in a single chapter playthrough.

You can track each character's kills from the Character
      Select menu.

Wicked Deep Pockets: 20 Points
-------------------
Description: Amass 1,000,000 gold.
Tips: You must have all the gold at once, ouch. You may want to hold
off on buying each character's 200,000 gold accessory until
you've piled up the million gold. Me, I'd rather get the
accessories first since they make building up easier.

Playing the later Hard Chapters and selling the items you
find is the most effective way to earn money.

      You can also equip:
-The Gold Ring increases the value of money drops
-Soma's Mimic soul drops money when Soma is hit.
      ...but it's really not necessary.

Hunter Legend: 30 Points
-------------
Description: Complete Hard Mode.
Tips: Get good! And play with good people. You can do it.
See the Chapters section for more advice.
