GRAN TURISMO 3 A-SPEC - PlayStation2 B License Guide v1.00 by Dallas Scott ([email protected]) Last updated on July 15, 2001 This guide contains maps, information and strategies on completing all eight B License Exams in Gran Turismo 3. The B License Test is the easiest of the batch, but I felt like making this guide anyway, as there are those who may be having trouble with some of the exams. In the future, I plan to make guides for the other license tests, but when this will happen is unknown to me as of now. Enjoy the guide and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B LICENSE EXAMS B-1 - Start, Acceleration and Braking I |_______________________________________________________________| S|---------------------------------------------------------------|F 1 0 0 0 m Vehicle: New Beetle 2.0 Gold: 0'35.100 Silver: 0'35.400 Bronze: 0'35.800 In-game text: Accelerate from a standing start and stop as quickly as possible in the goal area beyond the finish line at 1000 meters. It is best to switch from full acceleration to full braking. Hint: use the distance markers every 100 meters to judge when to start braking. Strategy: A fairly simple run, accelerate through the whole thing, keeping an eye on the distance markers overhead as you go. When you come to the 900m mark, be prepared. The time to put on the brakes is when you come to the short line just after the 900m meter marker (it's halfway in between the 900m marker and the finish line). If done properly, you should brake quickly and effectively right inside the finishing area. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B-2 - Start, Acceleration and Braking II |_______________________________________________________________| S|---------------------------------------------------------------|F 1 0 0 0 m Vehicle: Viper GTS Gold: 0'25.600 Silver: 0'25.800 Bronze: 0'26.300 In-game text: This test is similar to B-1, but with a higher powered test car that accelerates quicker but is heavier, so you need to start braking sooner. Hint: use the distance markers every 100 meters to judge when to start braking. Strategy: Basically the same exact thing as B-1 with a heavier car, meaning you'll have to brake sooner. Accelerate through the whole thing as you did before until you come to the 800m marker. Pass it and right before you get to the 900m marker, start braking and you should stop in the finish area. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B-3 - Basics of Cornering: Front-wheel Drive ___________________________________________________ / S \ | _____ \ \_____________/ \______ \ F _________ \ \ / \ | | | \___/ | | | | _________ | \____________________/ \_________/ Vehicle: Coupe Turbo Plus Gold: 0'31.100 Silver: 0'31.400 Bronze: 0'32.500 In-game text: Negotiate a left turn after a long straightaway. Brake early and slow before turning. Come in too fast and the car will not turn, but will fly off the outside of the corner. Take it easy going into the corner but hit the gas early coming out. Out of the corner, take full advantage of the track outside edge. Strategy: Start off by accelerating and following the broken blue line until you go under the overpass where you'll notice the line starts veering to the right. Continue following it until you reach the turn, then brake and take the turn at 40 MPH until you're past the red lines and back to the white. Here, tap the X button to slightly accelerate to get around the rest of the turn then accelerate the rest of the way out and follow the blue line to the finish. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B-4 - Basics of Cornering: Rear-wheel Drive ___________________________________________________ / S \ | _____ \ \_____________/ \______ \ F _________ \ \ / \ | | | \___/ | | | | _________ | \____________________/ \_________/ Vehicle: S2000 Gold: 0'29.100 Silver: 0'29.400 Bronze: 0'31.000 In-game text: This test is the same as B-3, but this time you are driving a high-powered rear-wheel drive car, so hitting the gas too early in the corner risks the rear wheels losing their grip for a spin. In cornering, adjust the accelerator a little at a time and feel for when to go full out. Hint: check out the Demo. Strategy: This will be the same test as the previous one, only you'll be using a different car. If you accelerate around the turn too early, your tires will lose their grip and the car will spin out. Do the same as you did in the last test, but when coming out of the turn, make sure you tap the X button instead of holding it to ensure you don't spin out. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B-5 - Applied Cornering: Front-wheel Drive ___ / / ___---_______---___/ / ___--- / ___--- / / \ / | / | / __ _/ / __--- \ ___ / /__ / F \__/ / / / \ S / / / ___\ /_/ \ ___--- \____---- Vehicle: CIVIC Type R(EK,J) Gold: 0'34.400 Silver: 0'34.800 Bronze: 0'36.200 In-game text: From a standing start, take three consecutive corners: left, right and left. Rather than going full-out on the first two corners, figure out how to get out of the third corner smoothly by hitting the gas for a fast time. Take the line that puts you in the best shape for getting out of the last corner. Gaining speed on the following long straightaway is more important than anything else. Strategy: Here, you'll be going through a series of three turns. The first is very easy and you can accelerate right through it. The second doesn't require braking, but you'll want to let go of the accelerator for a second to get past it. The third and final turn is the most difficult. Brake on the red lines, coast on the white (you'll want to take the turn at about 40 MPH) and accelerate out of the turn and into the tunnel which leads to the finish. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B-6 - Applied Cornering: Rear-wheel Drive ___ / / ___---_______---___/ / ___--- / ___--- / / \ / | / | / __ _/ / __--- \ ___ / /__ / F \__/ / / / \ S / / / ___\ /_/ \ ___--- \____---- Vehicle: Mazda MX-5 Miata LS Gold: 0'33.000 Silver: 0'33.300 Bronze: 0'34.700 In-game text: This course is the same as in B-5, but with a rear-wheel drive, hitting and releasing the gas causes even larger changes in attitude. Be careful not to disturb the car's behavior. This car demands more delicate accelerator control and more careful steering than a front-wheel drive. Strategy: Same course as B-5, only with a new car with rear-wheel drive. This course (IMO) is easier than the last... start by following the broken blue line and accelerate through the first turn. The second turn shouldn't be much trouble, just briefly release the X button while turning, but not too much or you'll spin out. The final turn is easy if you stay on the blue line. Brake in the beginning, then accelerate in the middle to get out of it. Follow the tunnel to the finish. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B-7 - Basics of Complex Corners ___________________________________________________ / \ | _____ \ \_____________/ \______ \ S _________ \ \ / F \ | | | \___/ | | | | _________ | \____________________/ \_________/ Vehicle: MR-S S EDITION(J) Gold: 0'33.300 Silver: 0'33.800 Bronze: 0'35.400 In-game text: Here you run through a blind high-speed winding section. The left-to-right corner just before the tunnel is a very difficult corner. First get experience in a somewhat underpowered car with less risk. The key is to hit the brakes with the car going as straight as possible. Strategy: You'll be using the same course as you did in B-3 and B-4, only with a new starting position. Start off by following the blue line and accelerating all the way until you reach the turn just before the first tunnel. Ease off of the accelerator for a moment to safely get past it then go through the tunnel and do the same for the next turn just outside of the first tunnel. This will lead you into the second tunnel. From here, just continue following the blue line to the finish, as there are no more major turns you need to watch out for. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B-8 - B License Final Exam ___ ________________________/ ---__ ___/ --__ __--- \ / __- | __-- S | ___ / \ / ---___ --___ \____/ | ---__ | \ | | \_______________________________/ F Vehicle: SKYLINE GT-R Vspec II(R32,J) Gold: 0'43.000 Silver: 0'43.400 Bronze: 0'46.000 In-game text: This course has many blind corners. The rocky stretch in the first part requires bold driving with no fear of the rocky cliffs. Use the technique of releasing the gas to turn the car. The speed out of the last left turn has a big effect on the time. The fastest line barely grazes the cliff when coming into the corner and lets out in the depths of the tunnel. Strategy: Follow the blue line and accelerate through the first tunnel. When you come to the first turn, start braking and take it at 50-55 MPH then continue accelerating up to the next turn. This one requires no braking, just let off of the accelerator for a second (taking it at about 60-70 MPH) and you'll be fine. Continue following the blue line into the next tunnel and stay near the right wall. Let off of the accelerator all throughout the white lines then accelerate around the final turn into the last tunnel where the rest will be going straight to the finish line. Congratulations! If you completed all eight exams with at least a Bronze medal in each, you'll receive a B License. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gran Turismo is a registered trademark of SCEA Inc.
