Contacting Me ***************************************************************************** ===================== == 1. Introduction == ===================== Well here it is. The turn of a new month, and another FAQ to provide you, this time it's Dr. Mario for the GameBoy! This FAQ is based on the GameBoy version of Dr. Mario solely, as it's the only version I've ever played or owned. I chose to do this FAQ because there were no FAQs for it and I found a request which I decided to fill to help those who are stuck with this game. It's also another step closer to me being a prolific author which I hope to become in the future. Dr. Mario was released initially on the NES and GameBoy in 1990. Both are quite good games, and they're somewhat of a Mario version of 'Columns' (a game released for the Genesis and Master System). This game marked Mario's first appearance as a doctor from all the attires he's also appeared in. This game is addictive and fun to play, and overall I think it is great! Enjoy the guide folks, and I hope you find it useful! If you have anything to add or ask about regarding this guide, please don't hesitate to contact me (check Contact section for more info)! ***************************************************************************** ======================== == 2. Version History == ======================== Version 1.0 (04 February 2003): The first version of this FAQ. ***************************************************************************** ============== == 3. Story == ============== Mario is taking a break from his platform adventures, and returning to the Mushroom Kingdom Hospital to do some research with his trusty assistant, Nurse Toadstool! But disaster strikes... One day Dr. Mario and Nurse are doing some research when something went wrong, and viruses were quickly spreading around the hospital! However, Dr. Mario has made some vitamin capsules that he thinks are capable of curing the disease and getting rid of the viruses. It's up to you to control these capsules and stop the viruses from spreading any more. ***************************************************************************** ================= == 4. Controls == ================= __________________ | ______________ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |______________| | | | | _ | | _| |_ SEL STR B A| D-Pad--->||_ _| // // O O| | |_| // // | | | |_________________/ Left: Move capsule to left/make different selections on main menu screen. Before Starting == ======================== OK, so here's where the FAQ starts. Knock on your GameBoy, and you will be brought to the Player selection screen, where you can choose having the good old-fashioned 1-Player game, or have a second player to join in. By the way, this guide covers only the 1-Player game, as I can't say much about 2-Player mode. So if you pick the 1-Player game, you are taken to the configuration screen. You are given a list of three configurations. Here's a quick rundown of each: Virus Level ----------- This is the level of difficulty you can choose to start with. It ranges on a scale from 0 to 20 with 0 being the easiest with fewest viruses and 20 being the hardest with most viruses, and 10 being the average difficulty. Speed ----- The speed that the capsules fall down after Mario flips them into the virus area. You can choose from LOW, MED and HI. Music ----- The music you're going to be listening to while you kill the viruses. There is the FEVER theme (also in NES version and in Super Smash Bros. Melee), CHILL, which is a somewhat softer tune, or you can choose to have the music switched OFF. ***************************************************************************** ======================== == 6. Killing Viruses == ======================== There are three types of coloured viruses in the game, and three colour type capsules. There are black viruses, gray viruses and black viruses. You have these colour counterpart capsules. The capsules have two colours and can either have the same colour on both ends or two separate colours: (##/##) Represents a capsule with the same colours on both ends... (##/OO) Represents a capsule with different colours on each end. To kill viruses, you must line up capsules with them to make four of the same colours in a row. Here is an example of how to take care of viruses. -------------------------------------- | ---------------------- ------------| | | || (Dr. Mario)| | | || | FIGURE 1: Virus at bottom | |Capsule--->(##/##) || | of virus area. There are other ways to get rid of viruses too, many that can be as complex or as simple as possible. Here are some other strategies you could try: -------------------------------------- | ---------------------- ------------| | | || (Dr. Mario)| | | || | | | || | | | || | | | Virus | ------------| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | \|/ | | | | (#/#)#(#/@) | | | ---------------------- | -------------------------------------- You can surround a virus by pills. If both capsules have the same colour on each end five colours are taken out for more points! -------------------------------------- | ---------------------- ------------| | | || (Dr. Mario)| | | (#/@) || | | | ^ || | | | # || | | | # | ------------| | | ^ | | | | #<---Virus | | | | | | | | ^ | | | | @ | | | | - | | | | @ | | | | ^ | | | | @<---Virus | | | ---------------------- | -------------------------------------- When the darker capsules take out the dark virus, the coloured one will fall on the three already-stacked coloured capsules and virus to take them out as well. You get extra points for this. -------------------------------------- | ---------------------- ------------| | | || (Dr. Mario)| | | || | | | || | | | (#/O) || | | | (#/O) | ------------| | | (#/O) | | | |Virus--># O<--Virus | | | | | | | | | | | ---------------------- | -------------------------------------- All colours on screen immediately vanish. Virus Level Table ----------------- The 'Virus Level' you pick will have certain number of viruses. Every time you complete a level, you will move to the next virus level, eg from Virus Level 10 to Virus Level 11. The number of viruses in a Virus Level goes up by four for each virus level. Here is a Table to show how many viruses are in each virus level: .-------------.-------------------. | VIRUS LEVEL | NUMBER OF VIRUSES | '-------------'-------------------' | 00 | 4 | | 01 | 8 | | 02 | 12 | | 03 | 16 | | 04 | 20 | | 05 | 24 | | 06 | 28 | | 07 | 32 | | 08 | 36 | | 09 | 40 | | 10 | 44 | | 11 | 48 | | 12 | 52 | | 13 | 56 | | 14 | 60 | | 15 | 64 | | 16 | 68 | | 17 | 72 | | 18 | 76 | | 19 | 80 | | 20 | 84 | '-------------'-------------------' ***************************************************************************** ======================= == 7. Cheats/Secrets == ======================= Epilogue Animation ------------------ Complete the game on any speed level. Special Animations ------------------ Complete V.Level 5, 10, 15 or 20 on MED or HI difficulty to view a little animation. ***************************************************************************** =================== == 8. Contacting Me == ======================= I have now made a contacting system and rules for contacting me, so please make sure you follow the steps and chances are you get what you want, plain and simple. If you wish to contact me PERSONALLY, then my E-Mail address is cornflake101(at)hotmail.com. Since I use Hotmail, I also use MSN Messenger, and I like to talk to people, so feel free to add me to your list. But don't forget that I have a family computer, so don't even THINK of sending me any spam or junk through the IM system, because my parents wouldn't think too nice of it, and I'll have no choice but to block you. So if you want to IM me, I would only just like to talk and nothing else. If you have any gameplay-related questions, please send them in to superryano64(at)yahoo.co.uk, since Yahoo does not contain as much spam as Hotmail, therefore I can answer your questions without too much difficulty and not wasting too much time. Please try not to send gameplay-related questions to my other E-Mail address, I am having a bad enough time as it is weeding through all the unwanted E-Mail I am getting. And finally, my GameFAQs Message Boards username is KenShamrock. To view all my work, check out the URL below: http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/22792.html =- End of File -=
