Introduction ===================================================================== Welcome to my Space Quest 3 FAQ! The purpose of this FAQ is to help you through this old, but still fun to play adventure game. This guide is split into seven different sections: - Copyright Information: The small, yet important section on copyright information. - The Introduction: The beginning of the FAQ. Known as the part where FAQ authors always find it difficult to say something interesting. - My Review: Basically a description of the game. No hints or tips are given away here. - The Guide: A short, but detailed guide on how to get all the points in the game. The guide is very basic, but was intended to be that way as it's easier to read and follow. - Point Listing: Just a list on what parts of the game give you points. - Frequently Asked Questions: The main part of this FAQ. It covers most questions that people would ask about the game. - Copyright Information: The small, yet important section on copyright information. Space Quest 3 is one of the best Space Quest adventures. It's fun to play, there's lots to do, and for once it has a great ending! So what's the storyline this time? Well, the Two Guys from Andromeda, makers of Space Quest 1 and Space Quest 2, are kidnapped in this chapter of Space Quest. There is talk that the two guys were under contract to Scumsoft, a software publisher known for making games that are extremely boring. Attempts had been made to contact the company president Elmo Pug, but he did not respond, and the whereabouts of Scumsoft is unknown. So although the storyline may not sound all that great, once you start playing the game it gets fun. But what has changed since the last two games? Everything! The graphics are much improved, the sound now comes out of the speakers, whereas it used to come out of the computer's internal speaker, which... was not good. There are many more choices to make within the game, many more things to try, and also Space Quest 3 is bigger than Space Quest 1 and Space Quest 2 put together. And that's about all there is to this Space Quest 3 FAQ. I hope my FAQ helps you with this game. ===================================================================== 3. My review ===================================================================== Space Quest 1 was created by Sierra in 1987. It was one of the first graphic adventure games, where you had to actually type in commands in order to make the game work. Space Quest 1 introduced Roger Wilco, a janitor aboard the spaceship Arcada. He was happily snoozing away in a broom closet, when some deadly aliens called Sariens took over the ship, stole a precious device known as the star generator, and killed everyone on board apart from Wilco. He wakes up shortly after hearing the emergency call that the ship is going to explode in 15 minutes. After escaping from the ship, the object was to retrieve the star generator, and lead Roger safely home. Because this was one of the first adventure games out, Space Quest 1 was obviously a great success, and it was no surprise when a year later, Space Quest 2 came out. Space Quest 2 was based shortly after Space Quest 1. Sludge Vohaul (who was the bad guy from Space Quest 1), was accidentally defeated by Roger when he blew the Sarien ship up. In Space Quest 1, Vohaul intended to kill all of the people on Xenon (Roger's home planet). In Space Quest 2, his plan was to dump a whole load of insurance salesmen onto the planet instead. Although lacking the depth of the original, Space Quest 2 was a great success. So it was no great surprise when two years later, Space Quest 3 came out. At the end of Space Quest 2, Roger Wilco blasts off from Vohaul's asteroid in a pod. In the pod was a sleep chamber, which Roger quickly stepped inside. Space Quest 3 starts some time after Space Quest 2, where Roger's pod has been picked up by a humongous robot controlled garbage freighter. As the pod lands hard on the debris in the junk freighter, the pod opens the sleep chamber, which awakens Roger from his deep sleep. Space Quest 3 was made nearly two years after Space Quest 2. So did this long time away mean any significant improvements over the previous two games? Graphics - 10/10 The graphics in Space Quest 3 are absolutely amazing considering that they were made in 1989. There seems to be amazing amounts of detail on everything. Roger now looks much more lifelike, and is animated much better than in the previous two games. The scenery has also had lots of detail applied to it, and all of the backgrounds look very well drawn. The whole game is still in EGA graphics, but the graphics are so good that you could easily mistake them for being VGA. The graphics were so good, that they even won an award for best PC EGA graphics from Game Player's magazine. Unlike the other two games, an incredible amount of attention has been paid to the graphics in Space Quest 3. Back in 1989, the graphics in Space Quest 3 must have been absolutely amazing, and that's the way people should try and remember them. Sound - 9/10 For those of you who have played the previous two games, you may have realised how terrible the sound was. What sound there was, came from the PC's internal speaker. The sound consisted of beeps of different pitches, and was basically terrible. Thankfully, Space Quest 3 is the first Space Quest game to have stereo sound, and it uses it very well. The sound effects usually consist of crashes, beeps and other simple but effective noises. The music is excellent, and can be heard in most of the games locations. The music and sound effects in Space Quest 3 are a vast improvement over the previous two games. Game Play - 9/10 Space Quest 3 is totally different from the adventure games these days. Usually with adventure games, you use the mouse to get, use or look at certain objects, simply by moving the cursor and clicking on various objects. In Space Quest 3, you use the keyboard to do everything. To walk left, right, up or down, you use the arrow keys. To get, use or look at certain objects, you actually have to type in what you want to do, such as "get the object". This is actually a much more fun way of playing games, as it requires you to think about what you are typing. In the previous two games, this typing interface was a bit of a problem, as the game could hardly understand what you were typing in. Things have been much improved in Space Quest 3 however, as the game understands even the most complex sentences. The game is very difficult in places, requiring you to really think about a puzzle before you can get past it. The game is non-linear, meaning that you don't have to follow a strict and certain path. This is good, as it encourages you to go off exploring in the game whenever you like. Another aspect of what makes the game so good is trying to find all the points (738 is the most you can get). When you complete the game for the first time, it's unlikely that you will find all the points, as there are many different ways to complete this game. This game has great game play as there are just so many things to do. Last Ability - 9/10 For those of you who have played the previous two games, you may have noticed that Space Quest 2 was considerably more difficult than Space Quest 1. With Space Quest 3, the game is even more of a challenge than the previous game. The locations in Space Quest 3 are both original and varied, and you may just spend yourself spending a few minutes admiring all of the detail. The puzzles have been made extremely difficult in this game, but luckily the typing interface has been improved so that it understands more when you type in commands. Whenever you accomplish a certain important task in the game, you will get points added to your overall score. There are 738 points to find in total, and finding every single point is extremely difficult. For this reason, it's likely that your score isn't going to be 738/738 straight away, so you'll probably want to go back and try and find things that will get you more points. By the 2nd game, you might have maximum points. By the 3rd game, you'll have probably found out that there's still a lot more to do in the game besides getting maximum points. By the 4th game, you might have found just about everything there is to do. And from then on, you might just want to play the game for the fun of it! Space Quest 3 is definitely longer lasting than the previous two games. Overall - 9/10 So, is Space Quest 3 better than the other two games? Well, the graphics have been much improved. Even though they are still in EGA, the graphics have been updated, detailed and drawn as far as EGA can possibly go. The sound is also a major difference over to previous two games. There is actually stereo sound in this game, something which was unfortunately missing from Space Quest 1 and Space Quest 2. The game play has been made more difficult, but also remains just as fun, due to the fact that the typing interface seems to understand basically every word you type in. The last ability has also been improved. There are more puzzles, more secrets, more things to do, and many more locations. Overall, Space Quest 3 greatly improves over the previous two games. ===================================================================== 4. The Guide ===================================================================== This guide is written in the quickest way possible, and it also shows you how to get maximum points, but it doesn't show you all the game has to offer. Like the previous Space Quest games, Space Quest 3 doesn't follow a certain path, meaning that it's possible to go places that you might not have gone the first time you played it. This guide is the way I have played Space Quest 3, and is not necessarily the fastest or most fun way. Enjoy! ===================================================================== Part 1 - Junk freighter ===================================================================== south - east - stand near the bucket conveyor and you will be taken up - "stand" - "jump" - west - west - west - "get in grabber" - move the grabber above the middle chute - "get out of grabber" - slide down the chute - walk over to the west wall - "get reactor" - walk over to the ladder - "climb ladder" - north - east - east - a rat will fall down from the ceiling and will steal your reactor - west - west - south - east - ride up the bucket conveyor again - "stand" - "jump" - west - west - west - "get in grabber" - move west in the grabber and go around the bend, continuing on into the next screen - move about 2/3 of the way across this screen - "push button" - a claw should come out of the grabber and get the green object, if it doesn't, keep trying until you get it - east - east - east - follow the rail around the big machine, but stop as soon as you get around the corner - "push button" - the green object should be dropped into a ship - west - west - west - west - "get out of grabber" - slide down the middle chute again - walk over to the west wall - "get reactor" - walk over to the ladder - "climb ladder" - "get ladder" - north - east - east - east - walk over to the smashed robot head - "climb into head" - walk around the other side of the big ship (the one where the green object was dropped) - "put ladder down" - "climb ladder" - "open hatch" - "put reactor in hole" - "put wires in hole" - "sit" - "search seat" - "look computer" - "2" - "1" - "1" - "2" - "5" - Uh oh!
