Hi, and welcome to my first FAQ. I decided to make this when I saw that
there were no FAQs for Smackdown vs. RAW 2008 currently.
There have been many questions raised and I thought I'd start out by
answering some of questions specifically on the fighting styles.

The introduction of fighting styles, the new submission control system, and
the newly added ecw extreme rules match as well as the ecw roster have left
many questions unanswered, and my aim with this FAQ is to help those that
need the answers to such questions, specifically for fighting styles.

If there's anything not added, please email, as this is my first ever
attempt at any FAQ, so please be patient with me.

So without wasting too much time, lets begin:

====================
FIGHTING STYLES
====================
Fighting styles is one feature that I'm happy to see implemented in this game.
There are some limitations on the moves you can or cant use in a particular
style, this needs to be fixed, however, this feature is a welcome feature and
hope the smackdown developers expand on it further in future installments of
the smackdown series.

The way it works is that each wrestler has 2 fighting styles assigned to them.
Lets take Kane for example.
He is both a Powerhouse and Brawler.
The thing to remember here is that whatever style you pick for Kane out of
these 2, you will always have both styles SECONDARY fighting abilities.
What changes is the PRIMARY ability of your wrestler.
If you pick powerhouse, you will only have access to the powerhouse primary
ability, which is known as rampage. You will also have the secondary
abilities of the powerhouse as well as the brawler.
If you pick the brawler, you will only have access to the brawler primary
ability, which is known as wreck shop. You will also have the secondary
abilities of the powerhouse as well as the brawler.

So if i pick Kane, followed by powerhouse, here are his abilities:
- Rampage (primary power ability)
- Powerful irish whips (secondary power ability)
- The Irresistible Force (secondary power ability)
- Ground & Pound (secondary brawler ability)
- Fists of Fury (secondary brawler ability)

If i picked Kane and chose the Brawler fighting style, here would be his
abilities:
- Wreck Shop (Primary brawler ability)
- Powerful irish whips (secondary power ability)
- The Irresistible Force (secondary power ability)
- Ground & Pound (secondary brawler ability)
- Fists of Fury (secondary brawler ability)

I hope all that makes sense, as that can be quite confusing for some.

Remember, that in order to activate the primary abilities, you must
have a stored special. Once you have a stored special, Hold R1 +
press triangle. Some styles like hardcore and high flyer may need
certain requirements, which will be explained below.

Also remember, that only one wrestler at a time can activate a stored
special.

Lets get onto the fighting styles and try to understand what each one
has to offer:

=============================================================================
BRAWLERS - Classic examples, Steve Austin, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Undertaker
=============================================================================
Primary Ability:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Wreck Shop =====
For a limited amount of time, your Superstar will reverse all of your
opponent’s strikes, and all strike attacks performed by your Superstar
will be unstoppable.
---- Advantages ----
Attacks are generally quicker than grapples, and all you opponents attacks
will be useless against you
---- Disadvantages ----
You can still be grappled, so be very quick with your attacks.
---- To Activate ----
You must have a stored special in the brawler style.
To activate this Hold R1 and press triangle, providing you have a stored
special.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondary abilities:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Ground & Pound =====
Mount the upper body of downed opponents and suffocate them with a
barrage of rights, lefts and the occasional headbutt for good measure.
---- Advantages ----
Easier way of making an opponent bleed, varying it with different speeds of
attack can enable you to literally beat the living daylights out of someone.
---- Disadvantages ----
Your attacks can still be blocked.
---- To Activate ----
Make sure your opponent is on the ground,walk up towards the upper body area
of the opponent and press X. You will then mount your opponent and you will
the option to move the right stick left or right for punches and up, then
down for headbutts.
If your opponent is face down, you can still give rights and lefts as
well as painful face pull.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Fists of Fury =====
Automatically unleash a flurry of three successive blows, pummeling
opponents and knocking them to the canvas
---- Advantages -
Add some momentum and can be used time and time again. Very effective.
---- Disadvantages ----
Sometimes you cannot connect completly and end up missing an attack
(usually the last), be aware when using this whilst your opponent is up
against the ropes. Opponent can defend against this if they block the first
attack only. Also try not to use it on an opponents back, sometimes you
miss the 3rd attack this way.
---- To Activate ----
Hold R1 and press Square. Your wrestler will unleash 3 successive attacks,
once the first one connects, the last two will be unblockable, and the last
attack out of the 3 will generally knock your opponent down.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

=============================================================================
DIRTY - Classic examples, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, Mr Kennedy
=============================================================================
Primary Ability:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Super Dirty Special =====
Use a stored Fighting Style Icon to literally hit your opponent below
the belt with a devastating low blow.
---- Advantages ----
Works like a spare stored special, that has some devastating effects.
Great suprise move when your opponent is groggy and expecting either a
strike or grapple.
---- Disadvantages ----
None really, it can be blocked the same way a finisher can.
---- To Activate ----
Hold R1 and press triangle whilst facing a groggy opponent.
You will need a stored fighting style icon for this.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondary abilities:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Referee Shield =====
Grab the referee and use him as a human shield before sending him
flying into your opponent, knocking them both to the mat.
--- Advantages ----
Boost your momentum meter with this tactic, plus your opponent being on the
ground allows you to do other dirty things, and gives you a slight advantage
in having control of the match. Great way of avoiding contact from an
aggressive opponent that is beating you.
---- Disadvantages ----
The ref doesnt always land into your opponent, this tactic usually needs to
be carefully timed majority of the time.
If your opponent is quick enough, this can also be blocked.
---- To Activate ----
walk near a referee and press and hold X to get behind a referee.
Release X button to push the ref into your opponent.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Argue With the Referee =====
Following an unsuccessful pin attempt, get in the face of the referee
to argue his slow count.
---- Advantages ----
Boost your momentum meter with this tactic.
---- Disadvantages ----
Suppose it allows your opponent time to recover a little and get up again.
Other than that, nothing major
---- To Activate ----
Press Triangle after an unsuccessful pin count. You will generally see a
prompt under your HUD that gives you the option to do so.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Ignore Ropebreak =====
Blatantly ignore the referee if he tries to break a submission
hold after five seconds and continue wrenching away at your opponent.
---- Advantages ----
Boost your momentum meter with this tactic
---- Disadvantages ----
None really, just be aware that the ref doesn't count to 5 before you
release the hold to avoid being disqualified.
---- To Activate ----
Hold the right stick in any direction whilst in a submission hold
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Strip Turnbuckle =====
Covertly remove the turnbuckle padding, exposing the steel so that it
inflicts greater damage on your opponent.
---- Advantages ----
Can cause your opponent some additional damage
---- Disadvantages ----
You can be irish whipped there! Yes it can be used against you too so be
aware.
---- To Activate ----
Go up to a turnbuckle and press X to strip it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

=============================================================================
HARDCORE - Classic examples, Sandman, Sabu, Mick Foley
=============================================================================
Primary Ability:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Hardcore Resurrection =====
Make your Superstar repeatedly slam a steel chair against his skull,
sending him into a frenzy at the sight of his own blood.
---- Advantages ----
Heals a portion of your body damage, basically you can keep storing specials
and use this ability to keep yourself fresh. It's almost as if its the
beginning of the match all the time ;o)
---- Disadvantages ----
Kinda sucks when having a first blood match, as its de-activated. Plus you
need a steel chair in your hand in order to activate this.
---- To Activate ----
Hold R1 and press triangle whilst holding a steel chair.
you will need a stored fighting style icon for this.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondary abilities:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Hardcore Rejuvenation =====
Your opponent may think busting your Superstar open gives them the
upper hand, but in actuality that’s the last thing you want to do
to a Hardcore Superstar.
---- Advantages ----
Gives your wrestler maximum momentum enabling you to either save it for
a fighting style stored special or allowing you to use your finisher
---- Disadvantages ----
None really, it just makes a mess of your face lol!
---- To Activate ----
You dont have to do much, just wait for your opponent to make you bleed.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Armed & Dangerous =====
Why just swing a steel chair at an opponent when you can wedge it over his
neck and stomp on it or do one of countless other weapon-specific grapple
attacks?
---- Advantages ----
Adds more depth and allows you to mix it up with strikes and grapples
rather than strikes only like other styles.
You can keep your opponents guessing as they wont know whether to expect a
strike attack with weapons or grapple attacks.
---- Disadvantages ----
Can be countered using the block button for grapples.
---- To Activate ----
Move right Stick whilst holding a weapon.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Ladder Windmill =====
---- Advantages ----
Great in multi man matches like money in the bank ladder matches, knocking
many of your opponents down. Best used in the centre of the ring.
Almost making you invincible while your spinning.
---- Disadvantages ----
You can be attacked/grappled if someone is quick enough to reach you while
your spinning around.
---- To Activate ----
Whilst holding a ladder, press the R3 button to position a ladder on top of
your wrestler's shoulders. Then simply spin the right analog stick in
either a clockwise or anti-clockwise to spin the ladder around.
Press the R3 button again to take the ladder of wrestler's shoulders.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Chair Guillotine =====
Wrap a chair around your opponents neck and proceed to stomp on it for
some heavy damage
---- Advantages ----
If connected, can give you a huge boost in momentum.
---- Disadvantages ----
Can be countered.
---- To Activate ----
Make sure your opponent is on the ground with his/her back on the ground
facing up. Grab a steel chair and press X near the head of your opponent.
Your wrestler will setup the chair on your opponent's head.
You will then have some time to do your attack, which is a stomp on one of
the chair legs.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Ankle Guillotine =====
Wrap a chair around your opponents ankle and proceed to stomp on it for
some heavy damage
---- Advantages ----
If connected, can give you a huge boost in momentum.
---- Disadvantages ----
Can be countered.
---- To Activate ----
Make sure your opponent is on the ground with his/her back on the ground
facing up. Grab a steel chair and press X near the feet of your opponent.
Your wrestler will setup the chair on your opponent's ankle.
You will then have some time to do your attack, which is a stomp on one of
the chair legs.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Conchairto =====
Rest your opponents head on chair, and crush it with another chair shot
---- Advantages ----
If connected, can give you a huge boost in momentum.
---- Disadvantages ----
Can be countered.
---- To Activate ----
Make sure your opponent is on the ground facing down, back up. Grab a steel
chair and press X near the head of your opponent. Your wrestler will place a
chair under the head of your opponent. Grab yourself another chair, and
approach the head area again. Proceed to attack your opponent with a
conchairto by pressing square.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

=============================================================================
HIGH FLYERS - Classic examples, Rey Mysterio, Jeff Hardy, Sabu
=============================================================================
Primary Ability:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Possum Pin =====
Feign an injury and then spring at your unsuspecting opponent,
catching him in a quick rollup for the three count.
---- Advantages ----
Upon activating, you just relax on the mat, great way of catching opponents
off guard and picking up wins when your opponent is damaged and you've been
knocked down. Its quite a good technique in one-on-one matches, simply
because if you activate it, your opponent has no choice but to come up to
you and you will spring forward catching him.
---- Disadvantages ----
You have to be lying on the ground to pull this off, meaning you must get
knocked down. Pretty useless when the opponent your trying to catch is
hardly damaged as they can kick out easily.
Also if you believe your opponent has activated this, you can wait for it
to wear off as it's not a permanent special.
---- To Activate ----
Hold R1 and press triangle whilst lying on the ground

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondary abilities:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Springboard Attack =====
Utilize the ring ropes as part of your offense by springboarding
off of them, launching your Superstar into the air.
---- Advantages ----
Gives your wrestler, essentially an extra moveset that are difficult to
counter, and require timing precision to do so
---- Disadvantages ----
Can be countered
---- To Activate ----
Lean against the ropes and press square
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Out Of The Ring Dive Attacks =====
If your opponent tries to catch a breather outside of the ring, send
your Superstar diving over the top rope and onto the arena floor.
---- Advantages ----
Excellent way of catching your opponent off guard whilst they are out of
the ring catching a breather or getting a weapon.
---- Disadvantages ----
Can leave you vulnerable if you miss
----To Activate ----
If your standing next to the ropes, lean against them and press square when
your opponent is outside the ring.
If your taking a run up towards the ropes before flying out, again press
square when in close proximity of the ropes.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Evasive Roll =====
Roll your Superstar to safety, as you can’t pin what you can’t
catch. Excellent defensive tool.
---- Advantages ----
Excellent way of avoiding your opponent, especially against people that can
beat you. You can really get on their nerves, and cos of this, they will
often complain that it is cheap simply cos they cant catch you.
Regardless of whether you use L2 or R2, you can escape strikes or grapples
even if you use the wrong counter for it
---- Disadvantages ----
If you keep using it, your stamina will begin to run out and you wont be
able to use it if your out of breath
---- To Activate ----
Hold L2 or R2 and move the left stick.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Turnbuckle Leapfrog =====
If your opponent is caught in the turnbuckle, dash toward him and
scramble up to the top rope, putting your Superstar in the perfect
position for an attack from above.
---- Advantages ----
Positions your superstar for some aerial moves, and great setup from
wrestlers finisher's
---- Disadvantages ----
Your opponent can still counter aerial moves from the turnbuckle with L2 or
R2 respectively.
---- To Activate ----
Run toward a groggy opponent positioned in the turnbuckle and press the x
button to leapfrog above them.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

=============================================================================
POWERHOUSE - Classic examples, Batista, Kane, The Great Khali
=============================================================================
Primary Ability:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Rampage =====
Literally send your Superstars into a rampage, making them
temporarily impervious to strike attacks, while all grapple and
ultimate control moves are inescapable.
---- Advantages ----
You can seriously go on the offensive and get around 3-4 grappling moves for
free and cause some serious damage on your opponents.
You can also activate this the moment you get knocked to the ground after a
powerful move or blow, sometimes, even after some finishers.
This feature also works well in last man standing matches, having a power
special saved while your knocked out will allow you to get up pretty
instantly, imagine how good you looked on the 9-count ;o)
---- Disadvantages ----
Being attacked whilst in rampage makes your wrestler show a unique animation
and if your opponent keeps attacking you in the same manner, you can be
stuck in that animation as it restarts each time you get hit.
Rampage mode doesnt protect you from weapon attacks either.
---- To Activate ----
Just make sure you have a stored special. Simply hold R1 and press triangle
to activate

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondary abilities:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Power Irish Whip =====
Transform a routine Irish Whip into a destructive maneuver,
sending your opponent over the top rope and crashing onto the
arena floor.
---- Advantages ----
Buys you time whilst damaging your opponent.
You can also use this to whip your opponent heavily into the turnbuckles.
---- Disadvantages ----
can be countered with precise timing
---- To Activate ----
Hold the circle button whilst irish whipping
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== The Irresistible Force =====
If your opponent is dumb enough to go for a quick pin, forcefully kick out
of their pin attempt and launch him into the air in the process.
---- Advantages ----
Creates abit of space between you and your attacker,
visually looks good.
---- Disadvantages ----
You lose the ability once your wrestler has a body part that has been
damaged to orange.
---- To Activate ----
while being pinned, press any button to launch your opponent off you.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

=============================================================================
SHOWMAN - Classic examples, The Rock, Steve Austin, HBK
=============================================================================
Primary Ability:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Steal Opponents finisher =====
Pour salt into an opponent wounds by using their own finishers
against them.
---- Advantages ----
Like the dirty primary ability this is a great suprise move when your
opponent is groggy and expecting either a
strike or grapple. It's like having an additional special saved that you can
use anytime to finish your opponent off
---- Disadvantages ----
You will need to know your opponents finisher situation
---- To Activate ----
Hold R1 and press triangle. You will need to know your opponents finisher
situation which is the downside, however, if you play the game often
enough, you will eventually realise each situation for the finishers

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondary abilities:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Mass Appeal =====
Add fuel to the fire by performing numerous taunts at your
opponent and get momentum on your side as a result.
---- Advantages ----
Gives your momentum meter a boost in momentum enable you to earn your
specials quicker.
---- Disadvantages ----
You could end up losing your momentum if you get attacked/grappled in the
middle of it
---- To Activate ----
Simply taunt using the d-pad
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Gimmick Infringement/Stealing your opponent's taunt's =====
Add fuel to the fire by performing your opponent’s signature taunt.
---- Advantages ----
Add a huge chunk of momentum to your meter whilst taking it away from
your opponents momentume meter.
Good to use if your opponent is tough and can gain his specials quickly.
---- Disadvantages ----
You could end up losing your entire momentum meter if you get
attacked/grappled in the middle of it
---- To Activate ----
Hold the triangle button and press any of directional buttons on the
d-pad.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Mass Exposure =====
Before leaping off the turnbuckle and on to your unlucky
opponent below, why not play to the crowd a little, as all eyes
in the arena are on your Superstar?
---- Advantages ----
Gives your momentum meter a boost in momentum enable you to earn your
specials quicker
---- Disadvantages ----
If you miss your attack or it gets blocked, or someone attacks/grapples you
during this move - you will lose your entire momentum!
---- To Activate ----
climb the turnbuckle and simply taunt using the d-pad
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

=============================================================================
SUBMISSION ARTIST - Classic examples, Finlay, Bret Hart, CM Punk
=============================================================================
Primary Ability:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Ultimate Submission =====
Use a stored Fighting Style Icon to transform a normal hold into an
agonizing ultimate submission hold, causing even greater pain to
your opponent.

The Ultimate Submission only works on Non-finisher moves.
It essentially makes your Non-finisher move turn into a submission finisher.

There is a red glow on the edges of the screen when executing a finisher
submission. You will only see this on a non-finisher submission move once
the ultimate submission is activated in conjunction with it

I've had a couple of people say it works with finisher submissions, but it
doesn't. Try this for a test:
Execute the Ultimate Submission move whilst doing your finisher.
After you let go of your opponent, check your HUD to see if you still have
a fighting style icon stored - you will find that it is still there -

---- Advantages ----
Great for adding extra pressure in beating your enemy with a submission
move.
---- Disadvantages ----
It doesnt work for finisher moves, sorry Bret Hart fans!
---- To Activate ----
Just make sure you have a stored special. Simply hold R1 and press triangle
during a non-finisher submission move to activate
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondary abilities:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== The Lock Pick =====
If opponents make the mistake of going for an early tap out, show
them who they’re in the ring with by immediately powering out their
submission holds.
---- Advantages ----
An auto defense mechanism if someone tries to make you submit early in the
match, you can escape the lock - with a lock pick ;o)
---- Disadvantages ----
You lose this ability when your wrestler starts to get severe damage, and
your limbs begin to turn orange.
---- To Activate ----
Move the right stick in any direction when stuck in a submission move by
your opponent.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Recovery Hold =====
Each time you wrench away at your opponent in an excruciating
submission hold, the faster your Superstar will heal from
previously sustained damage.
---- Advantages ----
Excellent ability as it allows you to damage your opponent whilst you heal
from any limb damage. Doing this often makes it difficult for your opponent
to beat you, whilst damaging them!
---- Disadvantages ----
It takes a while to heal from severe damage as you may need to apply more
struggle submission holds to keep yourself healthy. can be time consuming.
---- To Activate ----
Wrench your opponent during any struggle submission hold using the right
stick.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

=============================================================================
TECHNICIAN - Classic examples, Bret Hart, MVP, Gregory Helms
=============================================================================
Primary Ability:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Technically Sound =====
Get your Superstar in the zone with a stored Fighting Style Icon,
making them automatically counter all opponent attacks.
---- Advantages ----
An excellent discreet ability, your opponent will never know when you have
activated it because nothing changes in your HUD!
Also you can keep on the offensive while you have activated this, making
you more dangerous as you will automatically block anything thrown at you.
You can even activate this while your on the ground after being knocked
down.
---- Disadvantages ----
None really, just be aware that when you see the words "Technically Sound"
appear in your HUD, it means this ability has worn off, so stop relying
on it then. Obviously when you see your opponent's HUD with "Technically
Sound" it's time kick their butt!
Also remember, that even though you are invincible, your opponent can still
counter your grapples and attacks.
---- To Activate ----
Just make sure you have a stored special. Simply hold R1 and press triangle
to activate.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondary abilities:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Technical Immunity =====
If your opponent underestimates you at the beginning of a match,
automatically reverse all Strong Grapple and Ultimate Control Moves to
show you’ve been doing your research.
---- Advantages ----
Keeps you safe from Ultimate and Strong grapples until one of your body
parts turns yellow.
---- Disadvantages ----
Can still be caught in quick grapples and once one of your body parts are
yellow, it's pretty much a useless ability, as it is no longer working,
unless you heal your body damage with either hardcore resurrection or
recovery hold.
---- To Activate ----
It's an Automatic ability, and you can see your body in your HUD have a
ripple effect when it works.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Out Of The Ring Dive Attacks =====
There’s nowhere for your opponents to hide, so if they slip out of the
ring, send your Superstar diving over the top rope and onto the floor
below.
---- Advantages ----
Excellent way of catching your opponent off guard whilst they are out of
the ring catching a breather or weapon.
---- Disadvantages ----
Can leave you vulnerable if you miss
---- To Activate ----
If your standing next to the ropes, lean against them and press square when
your opponent is outside the ring.
If your taking a run up towards the ropes before flying out, again press
square when in close proximity of the ropes.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Pit Maneuver =====
While dashing toward your opponent, quickly duck behind him to
catch him off guard and wide open to an attack from behind.
---- Advantages ----
Excellent for wrestlers that have a back special, and generally confusing
your opponent, and mis-timing there blocking skills.
Almost gives you a free hit if your quick enough
---- Disadvantages ----
None really.
---- To Activate ----
Run towards the opponent and press X
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

===== Fake Irish Whip =====
When performing an Irish Whip, toy with opponents by pulling them
back in for a finishing move.
---- Advantages ----
Works well with the showman/dirty style, allowing you to surprise an
opponent by using their own finisher against them or a super dirty special
respectively
---- Disadvantages ----
Can be countered
---- To Activate ----
Press the circle and square button (before release)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
