Contact Information -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Introduction -------------------------------------------------------------------- This FAQ and Achievement Guide covers Final Fight: Double Impact, a downloadable compilation for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It contains two classic Capcom CPS1 arcade games, the popular Final Fight and the lesser-known Magic Sword. This collection was developed by Proper Games and published by Capcom. The game's new cover art was illustrated by Udon artist Alvin Lee and colored by contest-winner Chad Walker. Final Fight: Double Impact is 192 MB and costs 800 Microsoft Points or $9.99. Double Impact brings several enhancements and bonuses to each game. In menus, both games are represented as 3D arcade cabinets. Additionally, widescreen borders simulate the look of actually playing on an arcade cabinet. The actual game screen can be display with scanlines (like a classic arcade game) or with anti-aliasing that makes the graphics look smoother. On the sound front, optional remixed soundtracks from Bionic Commando Rearmed composer Simon Viklund liven things up. You can download the new music for free at http://www.finalfightgame.com/remix . Double Impact uses GGPO (Good Game, Peace Out) netcode for online play, making the online experience as smooth as possible. Online players can even randomly join single-player games in progress, much like the home versions of Street Fighter IV. Online leaderboards allow high score enthusiasts to compare their progress with others. The original arcade games are meant for multiplayer, so these excellent online features are appreciated. Finally, Final Fight: Double Impact not only has Achievements and Trophies, it also comes with in-game Challenges (much like the newest Mega Man games). Completing these Challenges unlocks loads of bonus materials in the Vault. Don't worry; this guide will help. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Version History -------------------------------------------------------------------- 04/14/10 Version 0.2 FAQ created. 04/16/10 Version 0.6 update. Menus and Options and FAQ sections added. Final Fight Series Rundown completed. Whew! Long! Introduction, Final Fight Challenges, 4 Magic Sword Sections (Rundown, Allies, Items, and Challenges), and Achievements and Trophies sections updated. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Menus and Options -------------------------------------------------------------------- Switching games: --------------- Final Fight is the default game. To switch between the two games, press X on Xbox 360 or Square on Playstation 3. Changing online mode: -------------------- By default, the game is set to online and anyone can join the game. To change it to Invite Only or Offline, press Y on Xbox 360 or Triangle on Playstation 3. You must set the game to Offline in order to play local multiplayer (but players can still be signed in to Xbox Live, of course). Changing the difficulty: ----------------------- The game is set to Normal by default. You can play on Easy or Hard by choosing Custom Game, Local or Online Multiplayer, and then selecting the difficulty. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Final Fight: Series Rundown -------------------------------------------------------------------- Final Fight (Arcade, 1989) ----------- The arcade version of Final Fight was a big hit. The graphics were amazing at the time with huge, detailed characters and colorful backgrounds. It packed two-players on-screen and far more enemies at once than the competing Double Dragon series, all without slowdown. Like Double Dragon it features a distinctive, memorable soundtrack. Final Fight is arguably the most influential side-scrolling beat-em-up of all time. Future Capcom games like Aliens vs. Predator, Captain Commando, and The Punisher successfully improved on Final Fight's formula, though none reached its success. Sega's popular Streets of Rage series openly copied it. Even Konami's beat-em-ups like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and X-Men share many similarities with Capcom's landmark brawler. Final Fight (Super NES, 1991) ----------- A Super Nintendo launch title, this port had fairly impressive graphics for a home game. However it lacks some of the resolution and animation frames of its arcade papa. More importantly, it's only a single-player game, so it loses some of the original's charm. The Industrial Area (Level 4 in the arcade) is missing as well. The soundtrack, however, is quite nicely remixed and still sounds good today. The American SNES version of Final Fight is famous for its censorship. Poison and Roxy, the female enemies, were replaced with punks Sid and Billy. That kills half the fun right there! Bosses Damnd and Sodom were heinously renamed Thrasher and Katana; items like beer and whisky got the axe; and the thug whose care is bashed in a bonus stage now says, "Oh my car!" Final Fight Guy (Super Famicom, 1992) --------------- Capcom released a special version of Final Fight in Japan that replaced Cody with Guy. Why they didn't just keep all 3 characters in at that point is beyond me. It's still only a single-player game and lacks the Industrial Area. On the plus side, it has some new items, the Industrial Area's music is selectable in the sound test, and the intro and ending are changed to account for Cody's absence. This game was released in America exclusively through Blockbuster Video, so not many people played it. Final Fight CD (Sega CD, 1993) -------------- Finally a nearly perfect home version of Final Fight! The Sega CD version is two-player and has all five levels. Transitions and background details that were missing in the SNES version have been restored. The only downside graphically is the Genesis' limited color palette (64 colors versus 256 on SNES) keeps it from being quite as pretty as the original. On the plus side, the intro and ending have some tiny new bits as well as voice acting. The music has been remixed with redbook audio by T's Music. Finally, a Time Attack mode with new backgrounds adds replay value. Do you think only Nintendo censored games in the 1990s? Heck no, Sega cut stuff too. Poison and Roxy are present in the US version, but their clothes have been redrawn to cover their chests and thighs. The image of Jessica shown in the intro was censored as well, though perhaps that hurts less since it was always cut from the US arcade version. Still, the Japanese Mega CD is the best way to play Final Fight CD. Final Fight One (GameBoy Advance, 2001) --------------- This is a unique combination of the SNES and arcade Final Fights. The sprites and backgrounds are mostly taken from the SNES game, so the animation and missing details have not been restored. The good news is that two-player mode and the Industrial Area are present. There are unlockable bonuses like alternate character colors, and you can even play as Guy and Cody's Street Fighter Alpha sprites (sans shadows, oddly). Players exchange dialogue with bosses now (including special, awesome dialogue for Alpha Cody and Guy). Sadly the US version is still censored in all the same ways as the SNES game, so the import's a little better. Mighty Final Fight (NES, 1993) ------------------ One of the last games produced for the NES, Mighty Final Fight is akin to the NES version of Double Dragon. Compared to their arcade versions, both games are only single-player, add experience systems, and change the levels and enemies up somewhat. The NES really couldn't come close to Final Fight's awesome CPS1 arcade graphics, so Capcom used tiny, cute, super-deformed sprites instead. Like Final Fight One, this game adds pre-fight boss banter. Though it's only a one-player game, Mighty has all three playable characters, and somehbow the female enemies weren't censored in the US. The only downside besides the lack of multiplayer is that several bosses were removed, so players end up fighting Sodom three times! Had it been released prior to the debut of the SNES, Mighty Final Fight would probably have been a big NES hit. Final Fight 2 (Super NES, 1992) ------------- The first Super NES-exclusive Final Fight sequel supports two players at last. Haggar is joined by Maki the female ninja and Carlos the guy nobody cares about as they travel around the world roughing up thugs. It's a competent sequel, especially if all someone had was a Super Nintendo, but it doesn't do anything quite as well as the original arcade game. The Guile and Chun-Li cameos in the background are rad though! Final Fight 3 (Super NES, 1993) ------------- The third Final Fight game actually manages to surpass the original in some ways! Four selectable characters (Haggar wearing goofy shorts and shin guards, Guy, and wannabes Lucia, and Dean), improved graphics, and Street Fighter-style special moves and Super Combos make this a very solid beat-em-up. Many people missed this game when it came out (it's rare), but thankfully both Final Fight 2 and 3 are available on the Wii Virtual Console. Final Fight Revenge (Saturn/Arcade, 1999) ------------------- The least-known Final Fight game is a one-on-one fighter. Strangely it was developed in the US but only released in Japan. The graphics are 3D but the game is 2D. Haggar, Cody, and Guy are joined by original Final Fight enemies Damnd, Sodom, Andore, Edi.E, Rolento, Poison, and El Gado as playable characters. Zombie Belger returns from the grave as the final boss. This game has an awesome sense of humor with wacky weapons, crazy moves, and great endings. With that said, the graphics are just attrocious (even for the time), the gameplay is unpolished, and the single-player AI is obnoxious. Still, I'm sure many Final Fight fans would enjoy the opportunity to try it out. Final Fight Streetwise (Xbox/PS2, 2006) ---------------------- Streetwise never had a chance. Developed by an American studio, Capcom Japan insisted on the game's gritty thug/hip-hop aesthetic. Therefor it looks and sounds almost nothing like its bright, colorful, good-music-having arcade forebear. Most gamers and critics wrote it off. But surprise! It's actually a good game. Think of it as a semi-realistic sequel to the arcade game. In the single-player story mode, Cody is out of prison (remember he became an ex-con in Street Fighter Alpha 3), Haggar has retired from politics to run a gym, and Guy leads a heroic gang of martial artists. Newcomer Kyle must rescue his brother Cody from an evil drug syndicate. Adventure elements have Kyle exploring urban neighborhoods, completing missions for people, earning new moves at the gym, and purchasing new licensed hip-hop songs at stores. The fighting is actually quite fun, and the story is interesting despite the bad dialogue. get weird toward the end when a zombiefying drug is introduced to the storyline and the difficulty ramps up to annoying levels. Playing through story mode unlocks stages in Arcade mode, which is a two-player cooperative mode styled after the original arcade game (though shorter and simpler). Arcade mode's super-fast remixed Final Fight music is brilliant. If only the difficulty wasn't so high due to a lack of continues. Streetwise is backwards-compatible on Xbox 360, so if you can get past the dark setting and hip-hop soundtrack (which is quite good for people who are into that), you should give it a shot. Forget the critics! Compilations ------------ Final Fight (arcade) is included on Capcom Classics Collection for Xbox and Playstation 2 and Capcom Classics Collection Remixed for PSP. Capcom Classics Mini Mix for GameBoy Advance contains NES games Mighty Final Fight, Bionic Commando, and Strider. The games are not enhanced in any way, but the compilation only cost $15 at launch. Crossovers ---------- Just as Bionic Commando started its life as a sequel/spin-off of Commando, Final Fight was originally intended to be a sequel to the first Street Fighter arcade game. Yoshiki Okamoto created both series. Thus there are some cross-overs! Street Fighter II (Arcade, many consoles) ----------------- The car-bashing bonus stage reappeared in Capcom's premiere fighting series. Street Fighter Alpha series (Arcade, lots o' consoles) --------------------------- Guy has been a playable character since the first Street Fighter Alpha. Rolento became a playable character in Street Fighter Alpha 2, which has a great Final Fight background that features Haggar, Damnd, Poison, and others. Cody joined the fight in prison clothes in Alpha 3. He even fights with a knife. Street Fighter III (Arcade, Dreamcast, Xbox, Playstation 2) ------------------ Remember how hip-hop music didn't quite fit into Final Fight Streetwise? For some reason nobody minded Street Fighter III's much crappier hip-hop, but I digress. Andore is a playable character here, though he's been renamed Hugo, presumably out of respect to deceased real-life wrestler Andre the Giant. Poison accompanies Hugo, though she's not playable. Street Fighter IV (Arcade, Xbox 360, Playstation 3) ----------------- There are no Final Fight characters in the fourth Street Fighter, but Zangief does have a great downloadable Haggar outfit. Super Street Fighter IV (Arcade, Xbox 360, Playstation 3) ----------------------- The car-breaking bonus stage is back! Oh, and Guy and Cody return as playable characters. They are accompanied by a Final Fight background that includes Hugo/Andore and a statue of Mayor Mike Haggar. But still... The car!!! Capcom vs. SNK 2 (Arcade, Xbox, PS2, GameCube) ---------------- Maki the ninja from Final Fight 2 is now a respectable, playable character in this one-on-one fighting game. Capcom Fighting Evolution (Arcade, Xbox, PS2) ------------------------- Nobody liked this fighter, but at least Hugo/Andore returns as a playable character with Poison at his side. Saturday Night Slam-masters Series (Arcade, SNES, Genesis) ---------------------------------- Capcom's awesome arcade wrestling series is best-known for Haggar, who returns to the wrestling ring as a playable character. In Japan, however, this game is set prior to the events of Final Fight. The first Saturday Night Slam-masters received console ports, but its two sequels are arcade exclusives. *** Check out HardcoreGaming 101's Final Fight article at http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/finalfight/finalfight.htm for more series details and pictures! -------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. This move drains your life if it connects. Still, it's often the best way to avoid major damage. Vertical jump kick: Jump, then press Attack. Not an effective attack. Horizontal jump kick: While moving left or right, Jump, then press Attack. Alternate jump attack: While moving left or right, Jump, then press Down + Attack. Not effective on its own, but occasionally useful in combos. Grapple: Walk toward an enemy at close range and you should grab the enemy. It's easier to grab stunned enemies, but they don't have to be stunned. Grapple cancel: Cody and Guy can release a held opponent by pressing Jump. Fast recovery: When knocked down, wiggle the stick/d-pad and press Attack and Jump rapidly to get up faster. Useful to avoid Andore's jumping attacks. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Final Fight: Characters -------------------------------------------------------------------- Haggar ------ Stats: Height 6'8" Weight 297 pounds Description: Ex-wrestler and mayor of Metro City, Haggar is the only character who appears in every Final Fight game. He does the most damage and is the easiest character to play. Techniques: -Piledriver: Grab an enemy, then jump and press attack. The piledriver is Haggar's most powerful attack; it also damages whoever he lands on. Cody ---- Stats: Height 6'0" Weight 187 pounds Description: Cody is Jessica's boyfriend. He is the most balanced character and specializes in knife use. Techniques: -Knife stab: Cody can stab with the knife instead of throwing it, but only if the enemy is close and lined up properly. -Punch loop: Punch an enemy twice, staggering him or her, then turn away and punch once, then face the enemy and punch twice again. Repeat to keep an enemy infinitely staggered. Guy --- Stats: Height 5'9" Weight 158 pounds Description: Guy, the ninja-in training, was absent from the first Super NES port of Final Fight. He is the fastest but deals the least damage, making him the hardest character to play. Techniques: -Off-wall-kick: There aren't many walls in the game, but Guy can jump off of them. Jump, then press Away + Jump against the wall, and then Attack. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Cody-pendant: 15 Points ------------ Description: Final Fight: Complete all levels with Cody. Tips: The character Achievements are self-explanatory. You don't have to beat the game all the way through in one sitting. If you complete the first three levels as Cody and then switch to Guy in Level 4, you would just need to complete the remaining levels with Cody on a subsequent playthrough. Haggar-ed: 15 Points --------- Description: Final Fight: Complete all levels with Haggar. Who's that Guy?: 15 Points --------------- Description: Final Fight: Complete all levels with Guy. Final Fighters: 10 Points -------------- Description: Final Fight: Complete all levels in co-op. Tips: Both players need to be present from the Character Select screen all the way until Belger is defeated. In online games, the host needs to invite the second player immediately after creating the game or the second player will not be able to join in time. If one player joined *after* the Character Select screen, you will not get credit for the first level. Should that happen, finish the game together and then start a new game (both players joining in properly this time) and complete the first level. Final Fighters should then unlock. If either player dies and allows the Continue countdown timer to reach zero, you will not get credit for that level. Coin Gobbler: 20 Points ------------ Description: Final Fight: Complete all levels using less than 18 continues. Tips: Experienced Final Fight players will get this on the first playthrough. If you're playing for lives and continues rather than score or time, there are two things to consider: save health items until you actually need them, and rush forward whenever possible so that some enemies may get left behind. I also recommend playing with Haggar since he knocks out bosses with less hits. See the Gameplay Tips and Walkthrough sections for advice on doing well! Save the World: 10 Points -------------- Description: Magic Sword: Fight and kill Drokmar. Tips: Simply beat the game. Anti-Hero: 10 Points --------- Description: Magic Sword: Decide to take the Black Orb. Tips: After defeating the boss of the game, choose Yes to take the orb and get an unhappy ending. Take that, BioWare! Smashing!: 10 Points --------- Description: Magic Sword: Decide to destroy the Black Orb. Tips: When you beat the final boss, you could choose No. That way everyone will live happily ever after. Sore Thumb: 10 Points ---------- Description: Magic Sword: Complete all levels. Tips: Beat all 51 floors. Do not use warps or you may end up skipping floors. Tough Guy: 30 Points --------- Description: Magic Sword: Complete all levels using less than 18 continues. Tips: Coming soon! Ninja Skills: 30 Points ------------ Description: Magic Sword: Complete any level without being hit, and without using a Magic Attack. Tips: Floor 9 is the best place to do this. The exit is just to the right of the entrance. How convenient! Locksmith: 25 Points --------- Description: Unlock everything in the Vault. Tips: Coming soon! -------------------------------------------------------------------- 20. Frequently Asked Questions -------------------------------------------------------------------- I've written tons of guides but I never included an actual FAQ section... until now! Q: Is Poison a transvestite? A: No. That idea started as a joke because people asked why the Japanese version of Final Fight had female enemies when the American version didn't. It's just a joke though, regardless of what Kotaku or others say. Q: But she's officially a trannie! A: That's not a question. Also, shut up. Q: Why does Double Impact have Magic Sword instead of another beat-em-up? A: In all likelihood Capcom didn't think Magic Sword would sell on its own, so they attached it to Final Fight. It's not a bad business move, though many fans and reviewers have suggested that two games of the same genre would be a better fit. Q: Is there any way to customize the controls? Sadly, no. It's the only mis-step in an otherwise perfect retro compilation. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 21.
