respected series of MK FAQS on the net. The information in this 
compendium is for the 2011 release of  Mortal Kombat, aka MK9.  Please

I. BASIC INFORMATION
====================

"Our story has ended.  Centuries of battle, meaningless.  Shao Kahn has 
consumed Earthrealm.  His victory must be undone; Armegeddon averted.

 Mortal Kombat allows you to customize up to four different controller 
layout configurations for gameplay of which you have the opportunity 
to select upon choosing a Kombatant.

Recovery From Attack
--------------------

If you are knocked down during battle, there are a number of options
available for you to keep alert.

 1. Quick Recovery - Pressing any button or move in any direction at the same
time your kombatant hits the ground will cause them to quickly recover to
a standing position.

 2. Delayed Recovery - Holding the Block button when on the ground will keep
you in a laying position.

 3. Wake-Up move - some special moves can be done instantly when laying
on the ground and will almost always connect with an attacking opponent.
(Wake-up Moves are identified by an asterisk(*) next to their name in 
Section II.)


Super Meter
-----------

 A new feature to come to the Mortal Kombat universe is the Super Meter.
Attacks, hits, and defense moves will charge your Super Meter, allowing 
you to perform new enhanced and deadlier moves.
 
  Enhanced Moves - More powerful special moves that Kombatants perform.
It will cost you one full bar on the Super Meter

  Breaker - Originally introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deception.  When 
caught in a combo, tapping BLOCK and Forward at the right time will break
a combo chain being executed.  The cost is two full bars on the Super Meter.

  X-Ray Move - A powerful new weapon in the Mortal Kombat universe much 
like Super and Ultra combos in the Street Fighter games.  The screen will 
go greyscale with blows showing internal damage in slow motion.  It will
cost you a fully charged Super Meter to execute.  Kombatants currently
have only one X-Ray move they can perform, and some moves can only be 
performed under certaion conditions.  


Tag Team Mode
-------------

 One of the new features in Mortal Kombat is tag team mode, where up to 
4 players can play.  
  
  Tag out - Press the TAG button and the Kombatants will switch
 
  Tag Attack - Pressing Down, Forward, Tag will cause the kombatants
to switch and the incoming kombatant will launch an attach.  This costs 
one bar on the Super Meter to execute.

  Tag Assist - Pressing Down, Back, Tag will cause the partner of the 
current kombatant to pop in and launch a quick attack before exiting.  
This costs one bar on the Super Meter to execute.

  Fast Tag - A Fast Tag during Tag Mode is an attack that will also tag
in your opponent immediately into play.

  Tag Combos - Tag combos are combination attacks that end with the 
kombatants switching.  Each kombatant has their own set of tag combos.


Finishing Moves
---------------

 A finishing move has long been the cap to a great battle in the Mortal Kombat
universe.  Finishing moves are completed by performing the correct joystick and
button combinations in the correct distance from the opponent when "FINISH HIM!"
appears after winning the match.
 
 Finishing move distances:
  1. Stand Close - directly in front of the oppoent.  If you can move the 
     opponent when walking, you are in the correct position.
  2. Sweep Distance - not close to the opponent, but you can still perform a
     foot-sweep attack to the opponent if you tried.
  3. Jumping distance - the distance if were standing close to an opponent and
     performed a back flip.
  4. Fullscreen - the entire length of the battle screen from your opponent.

 Fatalities - The chance to put that finishing touch to winning a battle has
never been gorier.  Performing the correct moves at the correct distance to 
perform a fatality will finish off your opponent.

 Stage Fatalities - Rather than end your opponent by your own hands, let the
surroundings do it for you.  Each Kombatant has their own moveset for their
Stage Fatality.  

 Babalities - Not seen since the MK3 series, Babalities have finally returned.
Instead of killing your opponent, turn them into a baby.  Each Kombatant has 
their own moveset for performing a babality, but ALL babalities are done in 
jumping distance.  To be able to perform a babality, you must not block any
attack in the winning round.

 Klassic Fatalities - A handful of kombatants also have a third fatality in 
their arsenal from an earlier version of Mortal Kombat.  These can be used once
that kombatant's klassic costume piece has been unlocked.  NOTE:  Not all
kombatants with klassic costumes will have a klassic fatality.


Test Your...
------------

 Test Your Might - The classic mini-game from the first MK returns.  Rapidly
press the required buttons to charge up and then press L2 or R2/LT or RT 
to strike.

 Test Your Sight - Originally seen in MK: Deadly Alliance.  Find the hidden
object in a highly graphic version of the 'Shell Game'.

 Test Your Strike - One of two new minigames.  The difference between this and 
Test Your Might is you must charge your strike to a certain point and only
strike when it turns green.

 Test Your Luck - More of a random version of the Kombat Kodes.  Like a slot
machine, you'll randomly choose characters, enviroment, and player strengths
and weaknesses.  During the character select screen, you can select Triangle/Y
To choose how many tiers there will be in the roll.  The minimum is three, the 
maximum is seven.

BARAKA
------

Baraka is the fiercest of the Tarkatans, vicious nomadic mutants from the 
wastes of Outworld. Like all Tarkatan males, he joined Shao Kahn's army 
once he came of age and survived the brutal Ritual of Blood. He gained 
the rank of Enforcer after single-handedly defeating a rebel faction. His 
loyalty and strength make him a favorite of the Emperor; his retractable 
blades have slain many of Shao Kahn's most bitter enemies. As a kontestant 
in the Mortal Kombat tournament, he will ensure his Emperor's claim to 
Earthrealm.

CYRAX
-----
"Safeties disabled.  Combat mode engaged!"

A skilled Motswana warrior, Cyrax relies on his natural fighting ability, 
his chi, to carry out Lin Kuei missions. He is proud to serve, but when 
the Grand Master initiates a program to convert the clan into cyborgs, 
Cyrax resists. He is reluctant to lose his humanity, which he believes 
is more effective than any mechanical augmentation. He has contemplated 
leaving the clan, fearing that it is no longer an organization of 
honorable assassins. Cyrax knows, however, that such a decision means 
death at the hands of his former comrades. No one leaves the Lin Kuei.

ERMAC
-----
"We are many; you are but one!"

As punishment for resisting Shao Kahn's claim to the realm of Edenia, the souls 
of the vanquished were torn from their bodies and fused together to form the 
being now known as Ermac. Bent to Shao Kahn's will, Ermac is his foremost 
enforcer. The essences of so many souls bound together give Ermac immense 
telekinetic power--an advantage that will destroy Earthrealm's resistance 
to Shao Kahn's rule.

JADE
----
"This will be easy!"

An assassin for Shao Kahn, Jade has earned a reputation as an agile and stealthy
warrior. Her family was Edenian nobility and served the Emperor once he 
conquered their realm, giving Jade to him as tribute when she was a child. 
After years of rigorous training in the art of kombat, Shao Kahn awarded her 
the position of Bodyguard to Princess Kitana. Over the centuries she and Kitana 
have become close friends, which makes Jade's secret orders from Shao Kahn 
painful to accept: Should Kitana's loyalty falter, Jade must kill her friend.

Orphaned at a very young age, Liu Kang was raised by Shaolin monks, who taught 
him the way of the spiritual warrior. They soon recognized his potential as a 
contender for the Mortal Kombat tournament and rigorously trained him for this 
task. Raiden, too, understood that Liu Kang was Earthrealm's best hope for 
freedom and introduced him to Master Bo' Rai Cho to further his development. 
Once fully trained, Liu Kang bested all challengers and earned the high honor 
of representing the Shaolin in the Mortal Kombat tournament. He and Raiden then 
embarked on their fateful journey to Shang Tsung's island to compete in this 
pivotal kontest.

the name Scorpion for his blindingly fast and deadly fighting skill, his life

his family and his clan were brutally exterminated by Sub-Zero and the 
Lin Kuei, Scorpion's existence became eternal torment. Resurrected by the 
malevolent necromancer Quan Chi, he entered the Mortal Kombat tournament to

the Lin Kuei. What pleases the Grand Master is the degree to which his son 
relishes the life of an assassin. The secretive clan allows Sektor to express 
his darker nature, using any means necessary to complete his tasks. Hired by 
Shang Tsung, his current assignment is to attend the Mortal Kombat tournament 
and eliminate the Earthrealm competitors before they have a chance to compete. 
Though this mission will put his clan in good standing with Shao Kahn, Sektor's

SHEEVA

"For the Shokan!"


Sheeva is a member of the four-armed Shokan race. Her markings reveal that 
she is of the royal Draco lineage. Like all Shokan, she pledged her life 
to Shao Kahn, bringing honor to her race by serving him. During an attack 
by Edenian rebels on Shao Kahn's fortress, Sheeva fiercely protected 
Queen Sindel and prevented her capture. She was subsequently appointed 
Sindel's personal bodyguard until the queen's mysterious death in 
Earthrealm. Sheeva is now the master jailer of Shao Kahn's 
oppressive dungeon.

A malevolent spirit of the Dream Realm, Freddy Krueger preys on the 
souls of the living as they sleep. When Shao Kahn began to steal

the emperor in the Dream Realm. But Shao Kahn's will was too strong. 
He pulled Freddy into the real world, where he was mortal, and defeated 
him. A badly injured yet determined Freddy fitted both his hands with

The Kombat Kodes made their debut in Mortal Kombat 3.  During a VS game,
6 boxes are shown prior to the match beginning.  Each player controls
3 boxes.  By entering in the correct kode, the following match can have
special rules, looks, hazards, or simply words of encouragement.

V. THE CHALLLENGE TOWER
=======================

300 different trials to attempt!  As you clear each trial, it unlocks the next 
one up the tower.  Is a trial too hard?  You can skip it for the mere cost of 
1.5 times the koin reward.  So if the challenge is 100 koins, it costs 150 
koins to skip the challenge; a challenge worth 200 koins will cost you 300 
koins to skip, 400 costs 600, and so on.  The only exception to this rule is 
Challenge #300, but don't panic, as it only takes 50,000 koins to skip!

The types of challenges varies:  traditional one-on-one matches, tag-team, 
one-on-three, "Test Your.." minigames, slow-motion fights, certain abilities 
ehnanced or disabled, even koins for each time you hit your opponent.

Completing certain challenges will unlock addtional features for the 
"Test Your..." minigames, and completing all 300 challenges will unlock 
Mileena's Flesh Pit costume from Story Mode.

VII. ONLINE
===========

Arcade Ladder is nice, Story Mode is cheesy but interesting, and the
Challenge Tower will keep you amused for weeks, but for the real arcade
experience, nothing beats Online Mode.

In order to utilize Online Mode, you will need to acquire a Kombat Pass.
These come already with store bought versions of Mortal Kombat, or can be
purchased at the Playstation Store/XBOX Live Marketplace.  
There is also a tempory online pass within the game that, once initiated, 
will give you 48 hours of online play.

Once connected you can join in on 1vs1 2vs2, or co-op Tag in either 
"Player" or "Ranked" matches.  You can also join in or create chatrooms
than can allow a maximum of 100 kombatants to either 


King of the Hill
----------------

  

 Respect Points
 --------------

  At the end of a King of the Hill match, the losing opponent and any 
 spectators watching can rate the performance of the victor on a scale of 
 0 to 10.  Theratings are then recorded as Respect Points.  So, will you 
 humble thyself in the presence of a master with a 10 rating, or teach the 
 Noob-spamming zealot the meaning of pain as you rate them a 0?


 King of the Hill Taunts

=============

The following endings are from Ladder Mode.  As they contain spoilers you
are READING AT YOUR OWN RISK!  The Mortal Kombat Compendium is not 
responsible for trauma or physical destruction done to your gaming system
as a result of disliking what happens to your favorite Kombatant.


Baraka
------

Shokan and Centaur alike were enraged that Baraka, Shao Kahn's 
trusted enforcer,

had turned on their master and killed him just as Earthrealm was within 
their grasp.
But their anger turned to admiration as the lifeless body of Shao 
Kahn transformed into that of the treacherous sorcerer Shang Tsung.
Shang had attempted to claim the realm for himself by posing as 
Shao Kahn. The deception had not fooled Baraka.
He had recognized Shang Tsung's scent and torn out his throat.
With Earthrealm finally in Shao Kahn's control, Baraka's loyalty 
and bold action were rewarded.
Tarkatans replaced the Centaur as the Emperor's Favored Race.


Cyrax
-----

Though he had pledged his life to the Lin Kuei, Cyrax left the clan 
to help the Earthrealm heroes turn back Shao Kahn's invasion.

For this act of desertion, he was marked for termination by the new 
Grand Master--Sektor.
Surrounded and severely outnumbered, Cyrax prepared to meet his 
fate when Raiden came to his aid.
With him were 100 Shaolin monks.
The Lin Kuei were defeated, though Sektor was not counted among 
the dead.
Cyrax was offered sanctuary at the Wu Shi Academy, where he has 
begun a new life as an honorable warrior for peace.


Ermac
-----

With Shao Kahn dead, Ermac was no longer bound to him.
Anarchy erupted within Ermac

as the many warrior souls that comprised his being struggled for 
dominance.
Only one had the strength of will to quiet the chaos.
The conflict resolved, Ermac returned to Outworld, determined to 
reunite with his past.
Queen Sindel and Princess Kitana were shocked to learn the truth:
that trapped among the many spirits within Ermac was their husband 
and father, King Jerrod.
Though he would never be the Jerrod they once knew, Ermac would 
forever serve and protect his queen and the Edenian people.


Jade
----

Shao Kahn was defeated, but the intense battle rendered Jade 
unconscious.
She slipped into a dream-like state and found herself walking in 
an unknown realm.

As she explored, her surroundings shifted and changed.
Jade approached a lone figure who stood in the distance--a shimmering 
woman. She did not reveal her name, but spoke with an air of regal authority.
Through the minds of countless mortals, the woman had been 
watching events as they unfolded over the centuries.
She informed Jade that Shao Kahn's death was an outcome that must 
be re-imagined.
Jade was defenseless as the woman possessed her body and emerged 
in the waking world.


Jax
---

After the invasion was thwarted, many of Jax's allies had seemingly 
disappeared, leaving him to clean up the mess on his own.

He searched for Shao Kahn's remaining forces utilizing a new 
cyber-scanner designed to remotely access worldwide databases.
Navigating its virtual reality interface, Jax inadvertently 
accessed Kano's brain through his optical laser implant.
Their minds linked, Jax virtually battled Kano. Finally he captured 
and quarantined Kano's consciousness within the Special Forces mainframe.
A dangerous criminal had finally been neutralized.


Johnny Cage
-----------

As the last remnants of Shao Kahn disintegrated, Johnny felt 
strange, as if he had lost control of his body.

Suddenly, powerful energy burst forth, destroying everything around him.
Johnny sought the aid of Raiden and Nightwolf, but their efforts did 
nothing to stop these random spasms of destruction.
Desperate, Raiden transported Johnny to Seido, the Realm of Order, 
where he could be taught to control his power.
Johnny Cage will transform into a warrior powerful beyond mortal 
imagining.


Kabal
-----

Victory over Shao Kahn came with a heavy price. Kabal's respirator 
was badly damaged
and if it was not repaired soon, he would surely die.

Desperate, he tracked down Kano and forced from him the identity of 
the cyberneticist who developed Kano's eye laser.
The good doctor was not easy to find, but he was more than eager to 
help-for a price. Now Kabal is rebuilt.
He is better than he was before. Stronger. Faster. He will need to 
be in order to repay his debt.


Kano
----

Kano made a fortune selling arms to Shao Kahn and used the profits 
to upgrade his cybernetics.

The added connectivity of his eye implant gave him unparalleled access 
to global communications.
Using his mind, he navigated the databases of banks, law enforcement 
agencies and other networks.
But his activities left him vulnerable to hackers.
Jax infiltrated Kano's mind and trapped his consciousness in the 
Special Forces mainframe.
It wasn't long, however, until Kano managed to free himself.
His consciousness spread like a virus throughout the Special 
Forces network of automated weaponry.
Kano has become a one-man army.


Kitana
------

Kitana had ended Shao Kahn's life for his betrayal. She had 
discovered the truth about Mileena...

but rather than slay her as well, she took pity on her half-sister.
She offered Mileena a home within the Edenian aristocracy. She was, 
after all, of royal blood.
Mileena cautiously accepted her sister's invitation.
With Mileena and Jade at her side, Kitana formed a fighting force 
dedicated to bringing justice to the realms.
Never again would a warlord arise to create such terror.


Kung Lao
--------

Kung Lao had avenged his ancestor's death and saved Earthrealm 
from Shao Kahn's brutality.

In quiet reflection with Raiden at the grave of the Great Kung Lao, 
he touched the modest stone marker.
Images of past events, moments of someone else's life, flashed 
through his mind, concluding with a lost battle against Goro.
Raiden theorized that Kung Lao had unlocked memories of his past 
life.
The Kung Lao that stood before Raiden was in fact the reincarnation 
of the Great Kung Lao, who had been defeated by Goro 500 years ago.
He had accomplished in the present what he could not in the past.


Liu Kang
--------

Having defeated Shao Kahn, Liu Kang believed he was the only one 
capable of defending Earthrealm against outside threats.

During the invasion Raiden had been more burden than ally. Brazenly he 
demanded the Elder Gods grant him the thunder god's status.
In a one-match Mortal Kombat tournament, Liu Kang defeated his 
former friend and mentor.
Liu Kang's request was granted.
He was made a god-the new Protector of Earthrealm.


Mileena
-------

Mileena killed the Emperor in a fit of deranged fury.

But she was unaware that her victory resulted from Shang Tsung's 
designs.
He had imbued Mileena with the ability to drain Shao Kahn's dark 
magic, rendering him vulnerable.
Now Shang Tsung was ready to execute the next phase of his plan: 
murder Mileena and take Shao Kahn's power for himself.
But Mileena instinctively wielded her new dark power against the 
sorcerer. Shang Tsung's end came quickly.
Mileena absorbed his soul, multiplying her strength.
She then set out to claim an even bigger prize: the soul of a 
thunder god.


Nightwolf
---------

It took all of Nightwolf's power to destroy Shao Kahn.
His spirit guide, the wolf, had aided him in the battle, but in 
the aftermath its presence was no longer felt.

Nightwolf returned to his home, seeking the elders' help in 
reconnecting to the spirit world.
During their ritual, his wolf returned to him--changed. Shao Kahn 
had tethered his soul to the wolf spirit in order to cheat death.
Now corrupted with Shao Kahn's evil, Nightwolf has transformed 
into his Animality, his bite converting his victims into subservient 
lycanthropes.
Through Nightwolf, Shao Kahn will conquer Earthrealm one mortal at a 
time.


Noob
----

Quan Chi should never have resurrected Noob Saibot. Nor should he 
have enhanced his power to defeat Shao Kahn.

The revenant he created had broken free of his control.
Noob had secretly formed an "understanding" with a cleric from the 
realm of Chaos and opened for him a portal to the Netherrealm.
Shinnok, Quan Chi and the Brotherhood of Shadow were unprepared as 
the forces of Chaos overwhelmed them, leaving the Underworld severely 
weakened.
Satisfied with his work, the cleric, Havik, returned to the realm of 
Chaos.
Noob Saibot remained to seize control of the Netherrealm.


Quan chi
--------

Having finally brought about Shao Kahn's demise, Quan Chi was then 
tasked with growing

the ranks of the Brotherhood of Shadow.
Many warriors had perished in Outworld's invasion of Earthrealm.
Quan Chi stole their souls and remade them to serve his master, the 
fallen Elder God.
The task completed, Shinnok repaid Quan Chi's service by ordering his 
execution, thereby eliminating a possible challenger to his rule.
Quan Chi had anticipated this act of treachery, however, and resurrected 
Shao Kahn--the ultimate phantom warrior.
With Shao Kahn as his enforcer, Quan Chi struck down the Brotherhood of 
Shadow and Shinnok.
Quan Chi forgives betrayal from no one. Not even a god.


Raiden
------

Shao Kahn was gone, but the scars of the merging of realms remained.

Remnants of the invasion force roamed freely and had to be dealt with. 
But Earthrealm is vast and Raiden is but one being.
He recruited four warriors, one for each direction of the wind, and 
divided his soul, placing one part in each of them.
Through these new heroes Raiden can kombat the forces of darkness 
in four places at once.


Reptile
-------

Having defeated Shao Kahn, Reptile was feared by all.

He forced Shang Tsung to regenerate his Raptor race.
The process took agonizing months, but soon Reptile heard the snarls 
of young broodlings throughout the Flesh Pits.
Eventually Shang Tsung had created an army of Raptor warriors bred 
to serve Reptile.
They stormed the realm, killing any Tarkatan, Shokan or Centaur 
who opposed Reptile's rule.
The intoxicating feeling of reuniting with his people blinded 
Reptile to the suffering of his former comrades.
Reptile was home once more.


Scorpion
--------

Shao Kahn's death did nothing to relieve Scorpion's pain.
The loss of his kin still weighed heavily upon him.

For reasons he could neither explain nor understand,
he was drawn to the home of the Shirai Ryu.
Standing amid the rubble in solemn contemplation,
Scorpion was visited by apparitions of his fallen comrades,
who revealed the true mastermind behind their brutal deaths.
Enraged, he returned to the Netherrealm.
As the spirits of his kin immobilized Quan Chi,
Scorpion slew him,
finally avenging their deaths.


Sektor
------

Sektor had dedicated his life to the Lin Kuei. His victories had 
brought

honor to his father, the Grand Master.
He had proven himself worthy.
It was time to replace his father.
In a bold attack, Sektor smashed through a company of Lin Kuei 
guards as he pushed toward the Grand Master's chamber.
There he found his father waiting. The Grand Master warned him that 
wearing the Dragon Medallion brought much power, but at a cost.
Sektor ignored the warning and slew his father, whose soul burst 
from his body and flew into the medallion.
He had finally seized control of the Lin Kuei.


Shang Tsung
-----------

Shang Tsung voraciously consumed Shao Kahn's soul, absorbing his 
immense power.

Overwhelmed by his newfound sorcery, he fled to Outworld.
Moments before suicide, Shang Tsung was visited by Bo' Rai Cho.
The mentor of warriors offered to teach him to control the dark 
magic, but for a special purpose: Liu Kang had become a god.
The power had corrupted him, transforming him into a tyrant. He 
needed to be stopped.
After rigorous training, Shang Tsung mastered the one technique 
that could finish Liu Kang.
Vengeance would finally be his.


Sheeva
------
Sheeva had recognized the signs. Her people were out of favor and 
in decline.
The Centaur would soon dominate Shao Kahn's forces while the

Shokan would move inexorably toward extinction.
Sheeva's act of defiance, her murder of Shao Kahn, made possible a 
new home for her people among the mortals of Earthrealm--
a world free of both Tarkatan and Centaur.
With cooperation from world leaders, Sheeva secured for the Shokan 
the continent of Australia.
In return, they would protect Earthrealm from future invasions.
For her leadership Sheeva was exalted--the most honorable Shokan 
in their proud history.


Sindel
------

The spell that bewitched Queen Sindel had been broken.
She did battle with Shao Kahn and slew him-

punishment for the suffering he brought upon her and millions of 
others throughout the realms.
She dissolved the sorcery that bound Edenia with Outworld and began 
restoring her realm to its former glory.
The many races of Outworld were impressed. Not only had Sindel 
defeated Shao Kahn, but she had shown great leadership in chaotic times.
They willingly offered her their allegiance.
Under Sindel's governance, the realms of Edenia and Outworld 
remain merged in spirit.


Smoke
-----

Shao Kahn's violent death shook the very core of Smoke's being and 
dislodged his earliest memories.

Tomas Vrbada was only a boy when he was abducted by an obscure cult 
and sacrificed to a demon.
Burned alive, he returned to the mortal realm as an enenra, a 
creature of smoke and vapor.
His captors were helpless against his shapeless form as he lashed 
out with rage, killing them all.
His murder avenged, he returned to his human form, remembering 
nothing of his former life.
Now aware of his true identity, Smoke understands he is no mere 
assassin.
His destiny has been revealed.


Sonya
-----

The loss of friends and allies during the battle with Shao Kahn 
took its toll on Sonya Blade's sanity.

She left the Special Forces and went into seclusion to cope with her 
grief.
But her solitude was brief as she found herself regularly visited 
by an apparition who claimed to be her missing father.
With her father as a guide, Sonya embarked on a mission to 
exterminate what remained of Shao Kahn's army.


Stryker
-------

Despite telling the world that he was simply doing his job, 
Stryker was made a hero for saving Earth from invasion.

He received both the key to city and the Congressional Medal of Freedom. 
Press and paparazzi hounded his every move
His biography spent a year on the best-seller lists. Stryker action 
figures flew off the shelves and into every young boy's hand.
But when approached by Hollywood for the rights to his story, 
Stryker put his foot down.
Never would he allow himself to be portrayed by Johnny Cage.


Subzero
-------
After the victory over Shao Kahn, Sub-Zero learned from Raiden the 
truth:

that the Lin Kuei were ultimately responsible for the deaths of both 
Sub-Zero's and Scorpion's families.  Enraged, Sub-Zero offered Scorpion 
a chance to share in his quest for vengeance.
With the might of fire and ice combined, they were a storm of vengeful 
fury as they cut down their foes. Once justice had been done...
... Sub-Zero and Scorpion disappeared into legend, emerging from obscurity 
only to avenge the innocent. The forces of darkness will never stop 
this Deadly Alliance.


Kratos
------
Shao Kahn was dead. The God of War had prevailed.
The spell that had summoned him began to reverse itself.

As he slowly faded from this place and time, Kratos was approached by Raiden 
and Fujin. Though he did not count them among his enemies, Kratos had never 
been beloved by these gods.
He prepared for kombat. To his surprise, they bowed to him, a show of respect 
he had not seen from an immortal in many an age.
Raiden explained that though his motives were not pure, Kratos had saved 
Earthrealm. He was owed a debt of gratitude.  As he returned to his own world, 
Kratos nodded silently.  Their change of heart would perhaps prove useful 
one day. A debt of gratitude is often dearly paid.


Cyber Sub-Zero
--------------

There is currently no dialogue to go with Cyber Sub-Zero's ending, but
in the end Shao Kahn's soul cheats death by taking control of Cyber Sub-Zero's
body.


Skarlet
-------

Controlled by Quan Chi's sorcery, Skarlet attacked and destroyed Shao Kahn.
As Quan Chi's magic subsided, she realized her unwitting role in his plot
to bring ruin to Outworld. 

With Shao Kahn's blood splattered across her body, Skarlet absorbed his
immense strength.  She used this newfound power against Quan Chi.  Brotherhood
of Shadow warriors raced to defend the sorcerer, but their blood only 
served to make Skarlet invincible.  In a battle between sorcery and gore-fueled
fighting power, she avenged her fallen master.  Having served her purpose,
Skarlet disappeared into the shadows, awaiting Shao Kahn's rebirth.


Kenshi
------

Guided by Sento, his ancestral sword, Kenshi destroyed Shao Kahn and saved
Earthrealm from Armageddon.  But he had not yet exacted revenge on Shang Tsung.

The elusive sorcerer had hidden himself somewhere in Outworld.  Jax allowed
Kenshi access to a newly developed portal that permitted travel among realms.
In return Kenshi agreed to the fledgling Outerworld Investigation Agency.
After countless missions, he finally located Shang Tsung.  With a roar, Kenshi
plunged Sento through Shang Tsung's chest.  The Magical Sword drew the souls
of Kenshi's ancestors into itself, leaving Shang Tsung a withered husk. His
vendetta fufilled, Kenshi left Shang Tsung to die alone and powerless


Rain
----

Shao Kahn had used Rain to crush the Edinian resistance, but had not granted
him an army.  For this betrayal, Rain drowned the Emperor in his own blood.

A grateful Raiden thanked Rain for eliminating the Emperor and saving
Earthrealm.  His heroics were benefiting of a son of Argus.  Rain's lost
heritage was a revelation to him.  That he was a direct desendant of an
Edenian god proved his superiority.  Power was his by right, his divinity
confirmed it.  Rain's path was clear:  he would use Shao Kahn's army to rule
not just Outworld but all the realms.  To Raiden's surprise and horror, Rain's
first target is Earthrealm.



Freddy Krueger
--------------

Freddy Krueger's bladed hands tore through Shao Kahn.  The demonically-enhanced
weapons had been more than a match for the Emperor's dark magic.

Though Freddy had saved Earthrealm, Nightwolf recognized him as an evil spirit 
and, in a shamanistic ritual, sent him back to the Dream Realm.  But that 
decisionproved ruinous.  Freddy did not resist; he welcomed a return to 
immortality. From the Dream Realm he will again create a nightmare in 
Earthrealm.

Alternate Costumes & Colors
---------------------------

  Pressing the Start button at the character select screen will give you the 
opportunity to switch costumes.  Pressing the Start button again will give you 
the character alternate color.


Original Music
--------------

  While in the Arena select screen, pressing the Start button will change the 
background music for that stage to its oringal arcade music


Fight Against Jade
------------------
  To fight Klassic Jade, obtain a double flawless victory and perform a 
fatality on Shang Tsung during Ladder mode.  You also must not have lost
a match against another previous kombatant; losing a round in a match is
permissable.   In addiction, a total of three flawless victores must be
completed and three fatalites performed prior to fighting Shang Tsung.  
Upon completion you will be taken to Goro's Lair where you will do battle 
with Jade in her MK3 klassic costume.


Fight Against Smoke
-------------------
  To fight Klassic Smoke, press Down + Select in the Living Forest stage in 
Ladder mode when you see Smoke pop out within the first ten seconds of the
round.  He will appear from behind the tree just right of center.  
It will be to the right of the hat-wearing warrior on the ground.  When
completed, the match will end and you will be transported to Goro's Lair to
do battle with Smoke in his MK2 klassic costume.  Like his MK2 counterpart, 
Smoke has increased speed and Scorpion's spear as his special move.


Fight Against Noob
------------------
  To fight Klassic Noob, when he is seen in the background of The Temple 
during Ladder mode, win the final fight of the match without blocking
any attack.  He will be just to the right of the altar in plain sight.
In some opening stage animations you will see has shadow walking by in 
the sunbeam from the Temple Window.  When completed, you will not be able
to perform a finishing move, and instead will have to fight Noob in his
MK2 klassic costume.  Noob retains the same current movelist, but his damage 
resistance will be increased.


Fight Against Reptile
---------------------
  To fight Klassic Reptile, be playing on the Pit stage at night.  Something
(a witch on broomstick, Santa in his sleigh, etc.) will fly by the full moon
during the first 10 seconds of the match.  When this happens.  Perform a 
double flawless victory and a stage fatality.  When completed, your next match
will be at the Pit Bottom and Reptile in his MK1 Klassic costume will appear.  
Like in MK1, Reptile will have increased speed plus Sub-Zero's Ice Ball
and Scorption's spear as his special moves.


TOASTY!
-------

 Yes, Dan Forden returns.  Im some rare cases, uppercutting an opponent will
cause a picture of music composer, Dan Forden, to pop out on the bottom
right corner and the phrase "Toasty!" is heard.  As of this printing there
is no knowledge if there is a bonus/secret when this happens.



Shang Tsung can morph into more than one player?
------------------------------------------------

Well, yes and no.  In Ladder Mode it seems that the evil sorceror can transform
into other kombatants like in the first three MK games.  In reality, it's just 
two random kombatants and his opponent, since Mortal Kombat can have a max of 
four players at one time.  Regardless, it's still leaps better than how he was 
on MK:DA, Deception, Armageddon, and MK vs DC.  Would you like to see this in 
Versus mode?  I know I would.



View the Klassic Skins/DLC Kombatants in the Nekropolis?
--------------------------------------------------------

The new DLC Kombatants do not have thier own statue in the Nekropolis, so you
are unable to view thier stats or ending video.  However, you can still view
their skin and bio.  Simply choose any other Kombatant's bio and once loaded,
press START and then choose "Select Fighter".  You'll be taken back to the
selection screen where you can choose any fighter and kostume.  This way you
can see the Klassic skins as well!


Noob Saibot/Smoke Easter Egg
----------------------------

With the release of Noob Saibot and Smoke's MK2 costumes comes a small tip of 
the hat to their pertnership in Mortal Kombat: Deception.  When playing as
Noob Saibot, select his MK2 costume by highlighting Noob on the Player
Selection screen and pressing START.  Once selected, press START again. When
playing, all Noob clones will be of Smoke in his MK2 costume, including 
fatalities!  (NOTE:  Selecting Noob's MK2 costume by any other button than
START will not work.)


Smoke/Scorpion Klassic Costume Easter Egg
-----------------------------------------

Another little easter egg happens when you perform a babality on Scorpion
when he is in his Klassic MK1 costume:  The color of his costume will be
grey like Smoke!



XI. RUMORS
==========


Are Goro, Kintaro and Shao Kahn Playable?
-----------------------------------------

 This is a questionable, yet possible, topic.  Currently, Goro is playable
on challenge #150, and a hack of the demo version's wordcode shows an ending
for Goro and Kintaro.  Currently there is no known way to play as any on 
Ladder or Versus modes, although this could hypothetically happen in
future update releases or as DLC.

A leak into the wordcode of the MK Demo that was previously released
does show bios for Goro, Kintaro, and Shao Kahn.  It not confirmed if these
will actually be utilized down the road.

Most recently, modifications by third party programmers have made it possible
to play as the Boss characters.  As it entails going in and physically modifying
PS3 and XBOX files, this option is not reccommended.


 Goro
 ----

 Prince Goro has brought much honor to the Shokan race by serving Shao Kahn. 
His bloody achievements include crushed rebellions and conquered provinces. 
During the past 500 years he has been celebrated for winning the last nine 
Mortal Kombat tournaments for Outworld. Should he defeat Earthrealm's champion 
this time, he will become more than legendary. His victory is assured. There 
are none in Earthrealm who can withstand the might of Goro.

 Goro Fatality #1 - Goro grabs his opponent with two hands and pulls their
head off with his other hand.  He then pulls the head apart into four 
pieces.

 Goro Fatality #2 - Goro grabs his opponent with to hands and with the
remaining two pulls of his opponent's legs, then their arms, then tears their
torso in two vertically.


 Kintaro
 -------

Like Goro and Sheeva, Kintaro is of the four-armed Shokan race. Unlike 
his aristocratic comrades, however, he is of lower-class Tigrar lineage. As is 
customary when recruiting Shokan and Centaur into Shao Kahn's service, one of 
each race must face each other in bloody kombat. Kintaro killed his opponent 
and, in an unprecedented act of bravado, roared for more Centaur blood. 
Centaurs leapt furiously into the ring to their demise. This savagery led 
Shao Kahn to appoint Kintaro his personal bodyguard.


 Kintaro Fatality #1 - Kintaro grabs his opponent by their wrists and ankles 
 and proceeds to pull them apart into four pieces.

 Kintaro Fatality #2 - Kintaro puts a foot on the back of his opponent and 
 pulls their arms off.  He then pulls their head off and proceeds to rip it 
 in half.


 Shao Kahn
 ---------
Emperor Shao Kahn's lust for power is matched only by his ruthlessness. 
Millennia ago he overthrew Onaga as ruler of Outworld and has conquered 
many other realms since. Eventually he turned his attention to Earthrealm. 
The Mortal Kombat tournament prevents him from taking the realm by force, but 
if Shao Kahn's champions win 10 consecutive tournaments, Earthrealm will be 
his. As long as his champions Shang Tsung and Prince Goro do not fail him, 
he will be victorious.

 Shao Kahn Fatality #1 - Shao Kahn knocks his opponent in the air.  He weilds
 his war hammer and with a baseball swing, shatters his opponent.

 Shao Kahn Fatality #2 - Shao Kahn digs his fingers into his opponent's chest
 and procees to tear them in half with his bare hands.  If you watch the 
 "Mortal Kombat Trailer" in the Extras section, you can see him perform this
 on Raiden.




Can you perform a fatality on Goro, Kintaro or Shao Kahn on Ladder Mode?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

As of right now, it appears only babalities.  And even then it's a little 
tricky.  First off, you gotta be at the default settings(2 rounds to win,
90 second time, and at least Medium difficulty.)  Then it rumored to
either win each round without losing and with a babality or at the very 
least, perform a babality on Shang Tsung.  If done right, you will
perform the babality automatically after defeating them.  It's also
said to not block on the final winning round. 

  Goro - Baby Goro plays pattycake with himself and accidentally punches
himself in the face.

  Kintaro - Baby Kintaro sees a bowl of milk, crawls over and starts
drinking.

  Shao Kahn - Baby Shao Kahn roars, then announces that the player sucks.



What happened to custom soundtracks?
-------------------------------------

When the demo of Mortal Kombat, a news release mentioned that the 
Custom Soundtrack option was available, where one could play music
playlists rather than the in-game music.  While this was possible in
the demo release, this option was removed in the final build for the PS3
version.  No word yet if this option will return, although it is still
available in the XBOX360 version.



*What's in the new DLC? 
-----------------------

Downloadable contect is hitting Mortal Kombat at a feverous pace this
summer.  So far the released content has been

*June 7th - the Klassic costume pack:  Klassic Skins for Scorpion, Reptile,
Sub-Zero, Ermac, Kitana, Mileena, and Jade, as well as Klassic Fatalities
for Reptile, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero.

*June 21st - Skarlet

*June 21st - the MK Compatability pack 1.  This free DLC allows you to fight
other online players that have downloaded Skarlet if you haven't purchased her.
It also contains the MK3 costumes for Cyrax and Sector!

*June 21st - MK Season Pass.  This XBOX exclusive will let you purchase all 4
kombatants along with the new costumes that are released this sommer

*July 5th - Kenshi

*July 5th - the MK Compatability pack 2.  This free DLC allows you to fight
other online players that have downloaded Kenshi if you haven't purchased him.
It also contains the MK2 costumes for Smoke and Noob!

*July 19th - Rain

*July 19th - the MK Compatability pack 3.  This free DLC allows you to fight
other online players that have downloaded Rain if you haven't purchased him.
It also contains the MK2 costumes for Kitana and Jade!

*August 9th - Freddy Krueger!

*August 9th - the MK Compatability pack 4.  This free DLC allows you to fight
other online players that have downloaded Freddy Krueger if you haven't 
purchased him.  It will also contain Sub-Zero's unmasked costume from MK3
and Cyber Sub-Zero gets the MK3 Cyber Ninja skin!  (Sony users get this as
a mandatory patch update, patch version 1.04)

Other leaked test videos show new items that may or may not be included in
the upcoming DLC:
  

 - Playable Goro and Kintaro: a recent leaked video shows 
a fight between Goro and Kintaro, fueling the fire on the possibility 
they'll become playable kombatants.
 - FUJIN!  A recent leaked video shows a default male template fighter that,
when chosen in the select screen, the announcer's voice clearly calls him
Fujin, the God of Wind who made his debut in MK4.  As the defualt
template has no character traits or moves, Fujin is still considered
a rumor as of this printing date.
 - Speaking of a default male character template, is that just for the 
programmers when building new DLC, or could Kreate-a-Kharacter from
MK Armageddon be koming soon??

General Gameplay Fixes/Tweaks
• Changes to ranked and unranked auto matchmaking to help reduce the amount 
of time it takes to find a match and to more reliably match players of 
similar skill
• Tweaked in game peer to peer data transmissions for smoother gameplay.
• Opponent would sometimes play air reactions instead of ground reactions 
if attacker performed a combo initiated from a jump in punch that was 
blocked.
• Adjusted a few knocked down reactions that were missing knocked down states 
in them resulted in OTG windows.
• Fixed instances where some fighter’s Combo Breakers could be punished with 
wake up attacks if performed near the corner.
• Fixed some near 100% damage combos involving some Tag Assists
• Gravity adjustments on some air reactions to reduce the amount of unintended 
repeated hits in the corner for some fighters.
• Adjusted damage scaling for several reactions to reduce some fighter’s 
ability to land very large damage off of meterless combos.
• Added a tweakable switch to turn on the ability to throw escape when thrown 
while blocking (this is currently still set to off!)
• Fixed a bug where tagged in partners would sometimes come in from the wrong 
side of the play field.
• Fixed issue where some fighters could move after defeating an opponent in the 
first round after an X-Ray.
• Fixed an issue where sometimes the secret ladder fight characters would show 
up as the wrong color.
• All turnaround attacks now chain into their correct combos.
• Cleaned up some tag-ins and assists that were coming from the wrong side of 
the playfield.

Baraka
• Adjusted the air reaction to the chop chop blades to allow for juggle 
opportunities afterwards

Cyber Sub-Zero
• Tightened the input window for his mid bomb.
• Added a tweakable switch to turn on the ability for his bombs to freeze 
opponents in reacting states (this is currently still set to off!)
• Fixed an exploit where Cyber could remain in active parry state after a 
successful parry

Cyrax
• Added additional 2-in-1 options to some of Cyrax’s strings
• Cyrax’s Away+FP Command Grab has had its escape frame window widened to match 
the escape window of other throws
• Adjusted some reactions that resulted in completely unavoidable bomb popup 
scenarios
• Reduced the time after Cyrax has hit an opponent with a net before he can 
shoot another one
• Cyrax’s enhanced upkick no longer auto-faces during its attack
• Fixed an infinite loop involving Cyrax’s Net

Ermac
• Ermac can no longer true combo 2-in-1 from the last hit of the BP, BP string
• Ermac’s enhanced fireball now correctly costs meter when done from a 2-in-1
• Increased the damage scaling on a lifted opponent
• Fixed a bug where Ermac would occasionally shoot out an invisible fireball
• Slightly increased the recovery frames on a blocked or missed force push

Jade
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of her Enhanced shadow kick
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of her Enhanced staff overhead
• Fixed a case where sometimes when defeating the first opponent in a tag match 
with Jade’s throw the incoming partner could land a free hit

Jax
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced Dash Punch
• Lowered the amount of meter gained for doing ground pounds
• Jax can now dash cancel out of any of his ground pounds
• The enhanced dash punch is slightly faster and goes farther
• The promove 6th slam of the quad-slam does 1% addition damage now!
• Jax’s X-Ray attack has super armor on it until the collision is over

Johnny Cage
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced Shadow Kick
• Fixed an exploit where Cage could remain in active parry state after a 
successful X-Ray

Kabal
• Removed a block infinite resulting from repeated blocked Down+FK’s into 
Cancelled Dash’s
• Removed a block infinite resulting from repeated blocked Back+BK, FP’s into 
Cancelled Dash’s
• Kabal’s air fireballs hitting a wall no longer add damage scaling to a 
stationary opponent
• Fixed a bug where repeated Kabal air fireballs would sometimes be invisible

Kano
• Kano’s alternate costume should now correctly play his Victory cinema
• Kano’s alternate baby should now show up in his Babality correctly
• Kano can now jump in punch chain into his Towards+FP combos
• Kano’s enhanced choke grab now requires the correct buttons when done as a 
wakeup attack
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced Kano Ball 
(he loses the armor if he charges the ball)
• Kano’s X-Ray attack has super armor on it until the collision is over

Kitana
• Increased the damage scaling applied after Kitana’s Enhanced Fan cancel

Kung Lao
• Gameplay adjustments to the Spin to make it not quite so dominant in exchanges
• Kung Lao’s Spin is now slightly easier to punish on block
• Reduced number of Dive Kicks that can be performed in a single juggle combo
• Player can now block while being staggered by his enhanced hat toss
• Kung Lao no longer has advantage on a blocked overhead punch from his teleport
• Fixed a bug where Kung Lao could retain his armor from an enhanced teleport

Liu Kang
• Fixed instances of being able to OTG from Liu Kang’s X-Ray, forcing the 
opponent into a standing reaction
• The first hit of Liu Kang’s FP, FP, FP string will more reliably hit from a 
cross up jump in punch if Liu Kang is in flip stance
• Fixed it so you do not get stuck in his Dragon Stance if you hit the flip 
stance button during it
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced Bicycle Kick
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced Flying Kick
• The Bicycle Kick now does the correct amount of damage and hits no meter 
which hit of the attack frames hit
• Fixed a case where sometimes when defeating the first opponent in a tag match 
with Liu Kang’s throw the incoming partner could land a free hit
• Fixed an exploit where Liu Kang could remain in active parry state after a 
successful parry

Nightwolf
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced Shoulder
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced choke grab
• Nightwolf’s Axe uppercut effect and collision now always goes in the correct 
direction if the opponent gets on the other side of him after he has started it
• Nightwolf is no longer punished for throwing certain characters

Mileena
• Fixed Mileena’s uppercut recovery when she remains ducking after landing it
• Fixed case where sometimes when defeating the first opponent in a tag match 
with Mileena’s throw the incoming partner could land a free hit

Noob
• Fixed instances where Noob’s Breaker could cause damage
• Noob can now 2-in-1 into all 3 versions of the Blackhole
• Noob recovers slightly faster after throwing the blackhole
• Fixed a camera glitch after a successful teleport grab
• Fixed a case where sometimes when defeating the first opponent in a tag 
match with Noob’s throw the incoming partner could land a free hit

Quan Chi
• Fixed an exploit allowing Quan Chi’s Trance and Buff special attacks while 
the opponent was tranced
• Slightly reduced Quan Chi’s advantage after sky drop hit
• Quan Chi recovers faster after a successful Trance
• Fixed an infinite loop involving Quan Chi’s Trance

Raiden
• Adjusted the blocked Superman ball off reaction to allow for easier 
punishment
• Away+FK, FP, BP is no longer advantage on block
• FK, FK, BK’s recovery when blocked is slightly adjusted
• Raiden’s has slightly less advantage after doing his Towards+FK, 2-in-1 
into a teleport
• Slightly increased the recovery on a missed Raiden air superman fly
• The active frames on Raiden’s superman fly start slightly later

Reptile
• Fixed a rare facing issue that would sometimes cause Reptile’s X-Ray to 
attack in the wrong direction
• Fixed an issue with the collision on Reptile’s X-Ray that will fix some 
inconstancies with it landing in specific instances

Scorpion
• Scorpion can no longer be punished by breaking an opponent’s combo near 
a wall
• Fixed that sometimes when defeating the first opponent in a tag match with 
Scorpion’s throw resulted in a free hit for the incoming tag partner

Sektor
• Fixed a facing issue with Sektor’s Up+FK attack that should allow it to 
land more reliably during kombat
• Sektor can no longer be punished by breaking an opponent’s combo near a wall

Shang Tsung
• Fixed an issue where Shang Tsung’s turnaround FK would perform a punch 
instead of the intended kick
• Fixed an issue where Shang Tsung’s Upward Fireball would track an opponent 
that had jumped over him well after the windup on the attack had begun
• Shang Tsung can no longer be punished by breaking an opponent’s combo near 
a wall

Sindel
• Sindel can now 2-in-1 into her specials from her FK and her Towards+FK
• Fixed an infinite loop involving Sindel’s Scream

Sheeva
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced grab n punch
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced air grab
• Added a few frames of armor to the beginning of the Enhanced fireball
• Sheeva’s X-Ray now works against opponents with armor on
• Sheeva has a new Towards+FK, Away+FP combo

Smoke
• Closed the small window that allowed for a free Smoke Bomb after a successful 
air throw
• Fixed an issue with Smoke’s Throw Escape that allowed it to be punished if 
successful in some instances
• Reduced the damage scaling after a Smoke Bomb popup
• Smoke’s enhanced Smoke Bomb can now hit grounded opponents (doesn’t popup) 
for unscaled damage.
• Smoke recovers slightly faster after a missed air teleport
• Fixed an exploit where Smoke could remain in active parry state after a

Sonya
• Reverted some of Sonya’s temporary fighting style adjustments

In order to fix the desynchronization errors on the Xbox 360, you must manually 
re-download the Klassic Kostume DLC files from the Xbox Live Marketplace. 
Re-downloading the Klassic Skins Pack will not fix the problem. You must 
re-download the original pre-order skin(s). Instructions for re-downloading:

1. Hit the guide button (XBox Logo button on controller)
2. Go to the right to the tab labelled "Settings"
3. Select "Account Management"
4. Select "Download History"
5. Select the pre-order DLC you wish to re-download.
6. Choose "download again"
