Introduction ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have just purchased the game for the PlayStation 2 and will be writing this FAQ as I play through the game. Submissions to add to the content of this FAQ can be sent to [email protected]. My goal is to get as much information into this FAQ/Guide as fast as possible so submissions may be added without verification initially. As I verify information, corrections will be made as necessary. Credit to submitters will be given in the credits section of this FAQ/Guide. *** Instructions for submitting weapons and their specifications *** What I did was measure the Damage Bar for the Revolver (NOT UPGRADED) and divide that amount by 10. Just an arbitrary measurement, so that the Revolver is the base. If you are going to submit Weapon specs, measure the Damage Bar for the Revolver (NOT UPGRADED) and divide that measurement by 10. That amount will represent a Damage of 1. Use that measurement to calculate the Damage and Accuracy stats for the weapon you are submitting. Remember to use the same TV when taking measurements. Please submit stats for NOT UPGRADED weapons first. If you get an upgrade, measure the new upgraded stats and submit it, make sure to note UPGRADE 1. *** Note about Firing Rate *** The weapon selection screen does not show the value for Firing Rate. The purchase screen in the shops does show that value. If you have a Firing Rate value that I don't have please submit it and inform me how you obtained it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. You are Red... and this is the Wild West. End blurb That pretty much sums it up. I won't bore anyone with a review here, but I will point out what I think are the best aspects of the game. I think Rockstar did an awesome job in creating the western atmosphere. The gritty cutscenes and attention to detail with the graphics really bring the game to life. Most impressive are the sounds, from the howling desert wind, to impact sound effects. If a bullet hits wood, it really sounds like wood, likewise, bullets hitting flesh are eerily realistic. Spurs clinking, revolvers revolving, trains rolling down the tracks, the sounds are all amazingly accurate. I will reserve my thoughts on the game as a whole until I have finished the Story Mode and had a chance to get some multiplayer time in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Gameplay Controls ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These controls are for the PS2 version. X ....... Jump/Accept S ....... Pause/Menu Dueling RS Down, RS Up, Tap R1 to tag targets, Tap R2 to Fire Advice About the only thing I have learned so far is to Reload (Triangle) when it is convenient for you. I am already in the habit of Reloading after I kill an enemy unless, of course, I am being pressed by multiple enemies. Red can reload while he is running. Strafing works pretty well too, just keep the L1 button mashed and move, target and fire. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Story Mode ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Story Mode gameplay is mission style. Each mission is broken down into 1 or more engagements. Each engagement can feature different style enemies and/or different types of combat. Some enemies prefer to fire from cover, others keep on the move or a group may "Rush" you. An engagement might be a single duel. A chapter may have engagements in different environments, you may start in a passenger car on a train and then move to the top of the train for the next engagement. Your Unlocked Showdown Characters and Showdown Levels as well as your unlocked Journal Pages seem to be independent of your Story Mode game. I have restarted the Story Mode and my Journal and Showdown information have remained intact. Items with an Unlock Journal Page are not specific to a certain page. The order in which the Journal Pages are unlocked is fixed, meaning, that the first item you buy unlocks the Wanted: Dead or Alive page, the second item you buy unlocks the Outlaws in Twelve States page. Completing the Story Mode for the first time will unlock Bounty Hunter Mode and Hard Mode. Unfortunately, you will have to play through the entire story to acquire items you missed or could not afford the first time through. Bounty Hunter Mode gives you different objectives for certain chapters and has its own set of rewards. Bounty Hunter Mode Goals, Rewards and Strategies can be found at the end of Chapter Walkthroughs. 6.1. To that end, I need to use some abbreviations to make everything fit; USC = Unlocks Showdown Character (Unlocks corresponding Journal Page as well) USL = Unlocks Showdown Level These are pretty natural abbreviations for me, I used them when taking notes for this FAQ. You have to run back up to the house. As you head there an enemy will meet you by the creek, kill him and another 2 enemies will meet you near the fenced path. You will see Red's father engaging several enemies. You will have to kill 3 more groups of 3 enemies, just follow where Red's father is engaging enemies and assist. ~~~ Scorpion Brand ~~~ Cutscene ~~~ Red Hand Hiding ~~~ Cutscene Comment: I guess we are looking for a one-armed man. You don't get to choose your weapon so you are stuck with the Old Pistol, accuracy ain't that great. Get close! Move to and use the boulder in front to the left for cover. Kill the next 4 guys, use the Old Pistol for the guys on the ground, switch to the Owl Rifle and snipe the 2 guys on top of the Twin Rocks. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 3 - Training Session =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Deadeye ~~~ Training Session =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 4 - Boss =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Bloody Tom ~~~ Cutscene Kill the bosses, Bloody Tom, Big Oaf Whitney and George. Bloody Tom and Big Oaf will actively attack you, on the move, so try to strafe them and stay on the move. George didn't come after me until I killed Bloody Tom and Big Oaf, he is slow, Deadeye him. ~~~ I Am Taking Your Wagon ~~~ Cutscene Alternate Strategy(s): =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Bounty Hunter Mode =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Bounty Hunter Mode Goal......Clear the level without being hit. Bounty Hunter Mode Reward....Curly Shaw (Showdown Character) Bounty Hunter Mode Strategy..Invincibility works, but doesn't work for completing this challenge. You won't take any damage, but if you are hit, you will fail. Obvious helps are Golden Gun and Infinite Deadeye. ============================================================================== Chapter 3 Ugly Streetfight ============================================================================== Location: Widow's Patch Controlled Character: Red Harlow NPC Character(s): Sheriff O'Grady (Hostage) Total Enemies: Bounty: Ugly Chris $40 Unlock: Good: Ugly Chris (Showdown Character) Excellent: Widow's Patch (Showdown Level) Weapon Shop Items for Sale Name: Price: Effect: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Revolver $100 Weapon (SideArm) Shovel $13 Unlocks Journal Page Stethoscope $700 USC "Big Oaf" Whitney Boss(s): Ugly Chris Walkthrough: ~~~ Mutt Bites The Bullet ~~~ Cutscene =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 1 - Cover =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 1 guy will rush you, drop him and then take cover behind the corpse wagon. Take out the guy in front of the saloon to the left. Move and cover behind the broken wagon to the right. The next guy is usually behind the broken wall in front of you, sometimes, he breaks his cover and will come after you. After dusting him, move to the broken fence to the left, use that for cover. Chicken is hiding behind the water tank. A couple of hits with the Revolver will bring him down. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 2 - Cover =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- This one is tricky. There are 3 guys on roofs or 2nd stories with rifles. They are very accurate and have a long range. Because of the way they are spread out, there aren't many good covers. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 3 - Rush =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3 annoying bandits will rush you. They each take a few body hits to bring down and once they get hit, they will run away. Using Deadeye here to hit each one at least once is a good idea and they make it easier by sticking pretty close together. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 4 - Training Session =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Dueling Training ~~~ Training Session I usually do this training a few times just because dueling is so much fun! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 5 - Duel =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= No special instructions here, be fast and deadly. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 6 - Rush =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= At intervals, bandits will come rushing out of doors. This really reminded me of the old light pistol arcade games. If enemies are grouped Deadeye works great. Gigolo is the boss of this engagement and it doesn't take many hits to bring him down. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 7 - Boss =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Ugly Chris Gets His Hostage Groove On ~~~ Cutscene If you shoot Ugly Chris a couple of times he will let go of the sheriff. Deadeye once Ugly Chris releases the sheriff is not bad here, just try to get critical hits in. Hitting the sheriff is best avoided. ~~~ Somebody Get The Sheriff A Doc ~~~ Cutscene Alternate Strategy(s): =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Bounty Hunter Mode =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Bounty Hunter Mode Goal......Complete the level without hitting the sheriff. Bounty Hunter Mode Reward...."Twiggy Phelps" (Showdown Character) Bounty Hunter Mode Strategy..Pretty easy, equip your Scorpion and shoot Ugly Chris in the feet or back, take your time, you should have plenty of life to soak up any of Ugly Chris' shots. ============================================================================== Chapter 4 The Traincar ============================================================================== Location: Pan-Atlantic Railroad Controlled Character: Red Harlow NPC Character(s): Other Passengers Total Enemies: 1 Bounty: None Unlock: Good: None Excellent: None Weapon Shop Items for Sale Name: Price: Effect: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Breech Loader $220 Weapon (Long Arm) Family Photo $650 USC Sheriff O'Grady Gutted Bible $7 Unlocks Journal Page Bosses: Walkthrough: ~~~ Now This Here Is A Robbery ~~~ Cutscene =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 1 - Duel =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Walk to the front of the car and talk to the guy with the hat. Walk back to where the sheriff is to start the duel. Just a duel against a single enemy inside the train car. Alternate Strategy(s): ============================================================================== Chapter 5 Railroaded ============================================================================== Location: Pan-Atlantic Railroad Controlled Character: Red Harlow NPC Character(s): Engineer Total Enemies: Varies Bounty: Hatchet Schultz $100 Unlock: Good: Owl Rifle Upgrade Excellent: Rico Pedrosa (Showdown Character) Weapon Shop Items for Sale Name: Price: Effect: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Bosses: Fawler, Hoss Walkthrough: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 1 - Attack =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= You have to work your way back to the caboose where Fawler will be waiting. Look up, kill this first bandit. Climb up on to the roof of car. The next car is a log car, 1 bandit will come out from behind the logs. There will another bandit behind the last crate. If you dawdle here, more men will jump from the canyon walls onto the train, including a guy with fire water bottles. Climb up to the next car, you might have a couple of stragglers here. Next car is the caboose and Fawler. Try to keep your distance from Fawler, he can throw you off the train. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 2 - Run =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The train is no speeding up, Hoss has the engineer hostage and is forcing him to crash the train. You have to make your way up to the engine in the front. There are plenty of obstacles, bridges, beams and bandits. I ignored the bandits and concentrated on jumping over the bridges and ducking the beams while always moving forward. Once you get to the coal car, dispatch Hoss. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 3 - Protect =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ~~~ Hit the Brakes ~~~ Cutscene The engineer will heal you before this engagement starts. You will have to face two different enemies, riders and boarders. Some bandits will ride their horses up alongside the train and shoot you and the engineer. You have to protect the engineer (he has his own life meter). Other riders will board the train and make their way to the coal car to shoot the engineer. You have to hold the Pedroza Brothers off for 3 minutes. In the last minute, riders will board the coal car right on top of you, move around without falling off to kill them. ~~~ Next Stop, Brimstone ~~~ Cutscene Alternate Strategy(s): =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Bounty Hunter Mode =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Bounty Hunter Mode Goal......Defeat Hoss within 2 minutes. Bounty Hunter Mode Reward....Sheriff Bartlett (Showdown Character) Bounty Hunter Mode Strategy..Hoss is the 2nd boss on this level, he is the guy forcing the engineer to run the train off the tracks. Fall off the first car that you begin on. Run to the back of the train. When you get near the caboose, start running in the same direction as the train and then jump on the back of the caboose. Jump up to the top, run forward to the previous car to spawn Fawler. Fawler only took one shot from the Scorpion to bring down. Wait for the cutscene and then start the race back to the engine ignoring all the enemies. Hoss goes down after a couple of head shots with the Scorpion. ============================================================================== Brimstone 1 ============================================================================== Location: Brimstone Controlled Character: Red Harlow NPC Character(s): Shop Vendors, Townsfolk Total Enemies: None Bounty: None Unlock: Good: None Excellent: None You can freely roam Brimstone and visit the shops, buy items and talk to the good townsfolk of Brimstone. You are unable to draw your weapon though. When you are finished browsing, visit the Sheriff's Office to continue the story. When there is a break in the action, shoot the handle to Jack Swift's cage to free him. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 2 - Gatling =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ~~~ Jack Covers While Red Delivers Lead ~~~ Cutscene The first mounted weapon, the Gatling Gun. Move the gun slowly side to side and mow 'em down. A real good opportunity to rack up bonus money. Jack does a lousy job of covering you though, so check your right and left often. I had to jump down to kill the last circus midget. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 3 - Boss =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Pretty hard to believe this guy moves faster than you, but Pig Josh can chase you down. The strategy that worked best for me was to use the raised area by the gatling gun. You should see Josh appear near Jack's cage, fire as many shots as you can. When Pig Josh comes after you, he has to use the ramps on either side of the gatling platform. When he gets up near the top drop down and start towards the square building under the cage jack was in and when you see josh acrtyally near you start running around it. Eventually if you keep watching josh through the gaps in the wall he will slow down and start slowly looking for you. All you have to do is sneek up behind him and shoot him where his TnT is and he gets stuned. You only have to repeat the process about 3 times depending on how much you shoot him. If you are still unnoticed, get as many shots as you can when he is in range. While he is stunned, simply jump over to rooftop of a small shed that is directly in front of the stairs (the way you came up). Once on the rooftop, go to the very tip of the roof. Josh will run under you, but do not worry, his explosion does not harm you. Luckily he has a long recovery time after his attacks, so this gives you enough time to jump back over to the center building roof. Try to hide, and then shoot him when available. If he still is running after you, jump from rooftop to rooftop until you lose him. Repeat this process and you should defeat him. Jump up to the little attachment on the roof and face the hill with the gatling gun to your right. Pig Josh runs back behind there. Lock and load whatever rifle or pistol you have on hand and wait for him lumber out from the side. John reports that every time he has played through the mission that the Prospector has been there. I will try to do some testing to see if certain conditions have to be met. Take the path to the right, climbing up the rocks. There is a large rock to the right of the bridge that you can use for cover. Across the bridge you will see 1 bandit sitting down and 2 bandits walking. I took my time setting this up and killed all three in one go earning a 3x bonus. There is 1 more bandit on the next level up from the bridge landing, The Repeater Rifle has the distance to snipe him. You can find the first of three hidden crates on a path below the bridge, I snagged dynamite in this first crate. Shoot the crate to open it. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 2 - Cover =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- As you progress you will come to a stone bridge. When you get near the base of the bridge, 2 riflemen from across the canyon will start firing. I dropped back down a level, covered behind a rock and took them out. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 3 - Cover =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Instead of taking the stone bridge, I climbed up some rocks to the right. You will face a rock thrower, bow & arrow and a pistol. From where you are at, you should have no problem taking them out. When you walk out near the upper stone bridge landing, you should see 2 more bandits tucked in some rocks ahead of you. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 4 - Cover & Move =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= As you make your way forward, you will see a tree in the distance, sounds like a good spot for an ambush? Well, it is. There are 2 bandits below the tree ledge and a rock thrower by the tree. I dropped back down a level, found cover and took out the 2 shooters and then sniped the rock thrower. Just before you jump up to the tree, there is a path down to the right, follow it for another crate. To get to the tree you have to follow a path to the left and then jump up. Don't dawdle here, when you hit the ledge below the tree, 7 bandits will spawn. Run to the tree and use it for cover. There is a health pick up behind a rock near the tree if you need it. After taking those bandits out, go back to the ledge you used to climb up by the tree. Follow that lower left ledge until it nearly ends. Two guys will start shooting at you from across the canyon. Run back to the tree and look left across the canyon. I was surprised to see 2 rifleman pointed at me but not firing, must be a glitch, since they just stand there, they are pretty easy targets. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 5 - Duel =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= When you reach the broken bridge, you will have to duel 2 bandits. You can hit both of them before they hit you. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 6 - Cover & Move =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This is the point where you can run into the Prospector. Instead of taking the cave to the right, follow the upper path to the left. You will see it dead-end in a rock pile. When you get near the dead-end, you will be shown the Shop screen for the Snakebite Kit. Buy it. You will have a little cutscene where the Prospector will show you a short cut (the cave). I have not been able to verify this, but it has been reported by a few, that if you kill the 2 guys in the cave, run outside the cave and shoot the riflemen across the canyon before they can kill the Prospector. That you will be rewarded with $1500 (Prospector drops a bag of money). You will have to jump down to the left to circumnavigate the broken bridge. As you move forward keep an eye out for a cave path to the right. Move slowly here, there are 2 bandits in the cave, playing cards I think. Use deadeye to get hits in on both of them. Follow the cave path out and 2 bandits across the canyon will open fire. Run back through the cave, find cover and snipe the riflemen. Climb up and another rifleman across the canyon will spawn and start shooting, use cover and snipe him. You will also find another health pick up here behind a rock. If you can, leave the health pick up in case you need it for the boss fight with Bad Bessie. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 7 - Boss =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ You Either Drunk Or Crazy ~~~ Cutscene There are 4 flavors of bandits here; Rock, Revolver, Arrow and Bessie. As soon as the cutscene ends, deadeye the 3 minions, make sure you clean up and that all 3 go down. There is a large rock in front to the right. Hide behind it, but don't use it for cover. Let Bessie come to you, she stays on the move but part of her path takes her around the rock you are hiding behind. I will trade whip shots for head shots any day. Her whip really doesn't do that much damage, but if you get close range head shots with your revolver, she will drop fast. The 3 minions will respawn after a little while, but they retreat and should not be able to get you if you are behind the rock. If you left the last health pick up back a little ways, you can go back and grab it if you need it. There is also 1 final crate, on a ledge below to the left and every time I have opened it, it contained health. ~~~ I Hate To Kill A Woman ~~~ Cutscene Alternate Strategy: Submitted by: John Riley When on the level with Bad Bessie, first Deadeye the rockthrower and kill him. Bad Bessie, as if on skates comes in at angles to attack, bait her off the top ledge down on to the steps you used to climb up. If you can get her on the lower ledges, she gets stuck. Easy pickings. Alternate Strategy: Submitted by: Travman & PGL There is a showdown with Bad Bessie, and after several attempts, we have found a solution. Bad bessie will only go so far to attack Red. She will circle around the general area (a few rock formations, and two structures). Her range is a small depression near two forms of rocks, one small on the right facing the bridge, and a larger formation to the left. Eliminate the rock thrower first off so that Red can stand on the formation on the left (one big rock next to a small one). Bessie will rarely, if at all jump on top of this formation. She will likely circle the area, firing once in a while, then approach the rocks cracking her whip. Jump to avoid the whip, and she will stun herself, giving Red the chance to fire. Aim at her head, fire a few shots, and return to the top of the formation. Be sure to check the west end of the bridge for enemies. Once in a while there will be a person with a rifle camping out ready to fire at Red. Use your rifle of choice to pick off the enemies, because Bessie usually allows you the time. The unfortunate thing about this situation is that the rock-thrower regenerates from time to time not allowing you to get first shot.. If he knocks you off the cliff, make your way back up, carefully. There are two healths placed accordingly in this area, one in a metal box that requires you to shoot it open, and one more before the area where Bessie is located. Replenish what you need, and you may find when you arrive back to Bessie, the rock-thrower is usually gone. Just remember to keep high ground from Bessie, and you will be successful. Alternate Strategy: Submitted by: Mad The first thing is to take out the first rounds of henchmen by any means. Then merely stand inbetween the two rock formations and wait, dodging the incoming fire as needed. Bad Bessie will run from around one of the rocks to flank you and start whipping. Start pistol whipping or rifle butting her. It doesn't stun her, but he health really begins to plummet. Instead of running back up the middle, she will try to back around the rock from wence she came. I did not spend enough time riding to get the hang of it, so I dismounted and killed the bandits the old fashioned way. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 4 - Siege =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- I wasn't sure if this engagement was ever going to end. Bandits continually spawn across the creek at the back of the ranch. The riflemen are good shots, so avoid being in the open. There are 2 health pick-ups at the back of the ranch, 1 all the way to the left and the other all the way to the right. The bandits will periodically charge across the creek, I strafed as much as I could. Shooting across the creek seemed to cause them to rush. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 5 - Boss =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Buffalo Riders ~~~ Cutscene There are 2 bosses here, Buff and Holstein. Both are riding bison. There are three things to worry about; being shot, being gored and being trampled by Annie's cattle. I didn't look for a sniping position anywhere but I imagine there has to be one. I strafed and stayed as close to the bison as I could, using them as a shield against the cattle. Being close to the bison, the riders seemed to prefer using the bison's gore rather than their weapons, the gore is much easier to avoid. ~~~ When Red Met Annie ~~~ Cutscene Alternate Strategy: Submitted By: Mad Out in the small clearing by the barn, there is an outhouse with plenty of open space. Jump and climb on top of this and proceed to snipe. This position will keep you free from being gored or trampled by livestock or the mounted bison. As a rule of thumb, the two bison riders will begin to circle your position, and half the time instead of firing, they will get right up close and attempt to lasso you. The use of the lasso is time consuming, plus it puts them real close so you can aim for some head shots. This strategy will also help to make short work of the bosses. Alternate Strategy: Submitted By: Josh For the Open Range level I was able to take out the last 2 bosses, Luke and Hal without taking any damage at all. What you do is as soon as you finish off the last of the guys coming from across the creek, hop on a bull to ride. Spot Luke or Hal, either one will do, and ride as far from him as you can while still maintaining a good line of vision (preferrably all the way across the ranch where they won't chase you). Hit R3 to zoom in on them and pick them off with head shots with your rifle when they become stationary. I was able to take them out one at a time. Slice and dice, if a bandit fires from the 2nd floor, run up the stairs. There are plenty of broken bottles laying around and the bandits drop health pick-ups pretty generously. Tip from John Riley: Go up the stairs and go past where the 2 girls are bathing and get a good bead with a bottle on the guy in there. I finished him with 2 bottles. I would not recommend going in that room and fighting him. After he is dispatched, talk to the bathing girls to purchase the bath. ~~~ Just Open The Damn Door Woman ~~~ Cutscene =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 2 - Duel =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Well, Lookee Whats We Got Here ~~~ Cutscene Be fast, be deadly. I strafed/rushed and got a 3x combo. Save the health pick-ups if you can. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 4 - Boss =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Now The Real Show Begins ~~~ Cutscene I had to retry this engagement many times, the first couple of times just to figure out that Sam can only be hurt when he is stunned. There are two rifle girls on the stage, take them out first. One of them will drop a health pick- up. Then try to concentrate on Sam while he is on the balcony throwing barrells. If you hit him when he lifts a barrell, you will stun him and the follow up shots will hurt him, as always, take the extra second and get head shots. The other minions up on the balcony are lousy shots and I didn't worry about them too much, the fire bottle guy can be a pain if he starts hurling. After awhile, Sam will jump down. Again, don't waste bullets, the only time he can be harmed is when he is stunned. He doesn't have a weapon and he only has 2 attacks; a charge and a throw. Try to get a table in between you and Sam and when he charges and hits the table he will be stunned, pump his head full of bullets. Repeat. If you run out of tables, use the stage. Every time that I tried that, I got caught and surrounded. The next part happened pretty fast and I didn't take a lot of notes. I shot the sleeping guard in the head, which of course, alerts all the guards. I backed into the doorway and started lobbing dynamite out into the hallway. When there was only a few enemies left, I pulled out the pistol and finished them off. Open your map and it will indicate your next goal, the supply room. Go to the supply room and pick up the key. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 3 - Run =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Take the key to the jail cell to free the girl. I really didn't feel like messing around with the miners and guards, so I just ran. In the cell with the girl is another key. Tip by John Riley: After freeing the girl, talk to her. Another enemy will probably have spawned in the doorway by now. Punch/melee him to get him out of the way. Enter the room behind the doorway. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 2 - Attack =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Fall through the floor into the room below. In the adjacent room, there are 3 covered enemies. Cover against the doorway wall and take them out. The guy on the left will drop a health pick-up. Follow the hallway until it turns to the left. Cover against the wall, take your time and headshot the guy standing in walkway. As you make your way forward, keep your eyes to the left, there is another guard that you should be able to head shot. You are now at the rear of the Fort. As you climb up the rampart, a big burly with a pick axe will come out towards you, deadeye him, he will drop another health pick-up. There is a ninja-cowboy in the gate rampart to take care of as well. You will face burlys, shorts cowboys and ninja cowboys. There is a health pick-up in the room in front of you. The burly will drop a health pick-up as well. As you progress, more enemies will spawn, most of them using cover. I threw some dynamite or rushed them and point-blanked head shot them. Your path will be blocked, shoot the TNT barrel to ignite and blow it. Move forward and repeat. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 4 - Attack =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= You will come to a corner room with a doorway to your left. DO NOT run all the way into the room. The adjacent room to the left has a health pick-up under the stairs. Slowly walk into the opening, a burly will enter from the outside door and charge you. If you did not enter all the way, you can back up into the corner room and kill him, he will drop another health pick-up. Use that health, you will not be able to go back and get it once you enter the stairs room. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 5 - Attack =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= I ran up the stairs and killed everyone there. The first time, I used the gatling gun, I got dusted. Burlys and ninja cowboys will intermittently spawn around you. I killed everyone up by the gatling and then ran back down the stairs, grabbed the health and ran back into the yard. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 6 - Cover =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- I ran all the way to the rear of the Fort and only took a couple of hits. I then used the back wall as cover and sniped the enemies in the yard until the boss engagement spawned. I don't know if it is based on a certain amount of enemies that you have to kill or timed. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 7 - Boss =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Colonel Daren Finishes Business ~~~ At last, the guy who killed your father! Not really that hard of a boss to beat, in my opinion. Duck behind a wall and snipe him. Once you sit there killing enemies for about 5 minutes, it starts the boss engagement. I ran and jumped to avoid the bullets. You need to disconnect the car with the gatling gun on it. Jump down and shoot the red car handle to disconnect it. Run past the Diego soldiers car to the box car. The door is closed, shoot the red handle to open the box car door. Once the door is open, board that car. There will be a shorts cowboy waiting for you, deadeye him. I blew all the metal plating off and then shot at the front of the engine. When the engine has sustained enough damage, the train will come to a stop. I also didn't find this boss all that hard to beat, I just kept on the move and strafed him. You can not let up, even if you can only get in one shot, keep harassing Mr. Kelly to keep him off the townspeople. Oswald will target and fire only at you even though he can't hit you when you are behind the hedge. Let Jack and Annie take care of Oswald. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 2 - Strafe =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Randy is the next boss. Randy and a bunch of soldiers will come at you, Jack and Annie. Randy always stays opposite of you at the fountain. Take out the soldiers and then position yourself at the mansion side of the fountain. Jack and Annie will make short work of Randy with his back to them. Randy will drop a health pick-up when he is dead. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 3 - Strafe =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Annie Wants To Try The Side Door ~~~ Cutscene Annie and Jack will move to the right side. Kill all the soldiers and Annie will walk up to try the door, which spawns a few more soldiers. Take care of these soldiers and Annie will try the door again (it is locked). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 4 - Attack =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~~ Annie Wants To Try Upstairs ~~~ Cutscene Try to beat Annie and Jack upstairs, you want to keep Annie and Jack as healthy as possible. There will be an ambush waiting, including 2 soldiers on the roof. ~~~ Jack Wants To Pick The Front Door ~~~ If you die in the next engagement, you will retry from this cutscene. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 5 - Protect =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- This engagement was pretty tough for me, you get swarmed. Jack is trying to pick the lock which takes (3 minutes?), Annie stays on the 2nd story to provide cover and you follow Jack to protect his back. Cornet bosses will spawn, including 3 or 4 at the end. The objective is to keep you, Jack and Annie alive until Jack picks the lock, I don't know that it is possible to actually kill all the enemies. I found the Twin Revolvers to work the best. Deadeye the bosses when you can and treat the shotgun soldiers with preference. I kept on the move, moving and strafing between the front door and the fountain, don't stray too far or Jack will take a beating. ~~~ We're In ~~~ Cutscene Alternate Strategy(s): Submitted By: Tyson Newton Choose the dynamite for your throwing weapon before starting. After the opening cut scene, run up the stairs to the balcony on the right (left probably works just as well). You shouldn't have to shoot anyone on the way. From the balcony, target near the middle of Oswald's balcony, and lob the dynamite non-stop until he dies. This is an easy angle to throw from and nobody ever came up the stairs to stop me. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Bounty Hunter Mode =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Bounty Hunter Mode Goal......Complete the level with Jack's health at over 50%. Bounty Hunter Mode Reward....Golden Gun Cheat (One shot kills) Bounty Hunter Mode Strategy..Get the Invincibility Cheat first. If Annie or Jack take any more than a sliver of damage by the time Jack reaches the front door, quit and retry. I really didn't have a problem keeping Jack alive, Annie was the problem. Fire bottle comes in real handy when you get a group of enemies right in front of the porch (they run from dynamite). Annie will come down from her sniping point with about 30 seconds left. Try to get in front of her to shield her. These soldiers seem to do much more damage than the soldiers outside and there are very few health drops. Kill the guys on the stairs and move to the left of the main stairs towards the kitchen and dining room. You are looking for another stairway in the room adjacent to the dining room. Take the stairs up. By this time, I had very little life left. When you walk down the corridor, a boss will come after you. If you retreat, so will he, into a room with some other soldiers. I did not have the life left to fight these guys head on, so I lobbed dynamite into the room and Jack helped take some of the soldiers out. The boss finally got tired of waiting and charged out of the room, I more or less put my pistol against his head and blew him away. He dropped a much needed health pick-up. ~~~ These Walls Look Funny ~~~ Cutscene Retry Point =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Engagement 2 - Attack =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Jack stays behind to provide cover as you enter the secret passageway. This is another Retry point, if you die, you will start here. Follow the passageway until you come to some stairs leading down. There is another health pick-up at the bottom of the stairs along with some soldiers. I lobbed a stick of dynamite down the stairs and then followed it, strafing and pistol whipping the soldiers. You will find an open secret door at the end looking across a hallway to a library type room. Kill everyone in the room and Annie will enter and a cutscene will take place. ~~~ Let's Rescue Buffalo ~~~ Cutscene Annie will go out into the adjoining hallway and start shooting. I stayed in the doorway of the library room and pecked off charging enemies. You need to get to the stairs in the next hallway and go up and kill the soldiers up on the 2nd floor. ~~~ Buffalo Is Rescued ~~~ Cutscene Retry Point =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 3 - Boss Duel =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ~~~ The Governor Is Not In ~~~ Cutscene This duel was the toughest to this point in the game and took several retries for me to beat. The Scorpion he wields deals a lot of damage. I took out the soldiers and then started lobbing dynamite at Griffon. One of the dynamite blasts blew him to the very far left of the roof and he just stood there while I put some bullets in his head. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Engagement 3 - Boss Duel =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ~~~ Griffon Is Full Of Regret ~~~ Cutscene Easily the hardest duel and rightfully so, it is the end of the game. I think you have to have a decent amount of life here because I don't think it is possible to escape getting hit. I had a full health meter and I know I got hit before my shots landed on Griffon.
