Loopy's PS2/DC DOA2 Guide To Tag Teaming ---------------------------------------- Version 1.0 (Alpha Release) (Release Date: April 2001) Contents -------- About this FAQ Characters' Profiles Tag Teams Taunts Tag Team Taunts Tag Combos Challenge About this FAQ -------------- This FAQ will provide a brief introduction to the characters in Dead or Alive 2 for the PS2 and Dreamcast. It will tell you which Tag Team Combinations can be matched up and which can't -- so you can _really_ show off to your mates. Characters' Profiles -------------------- The characters on the PS2 version are laid out in the following order on the selection screen (I'm not 100% sure about the DC): +--------+------+----+--------+----+--------+-----+ |Kasumi |Gen-Fu|Tina|(Bayman)|Zack|Jahn-Lee|Ayane| +--------+------+----+--------+----+--------+-----+ |Hayabusa|Helena|Bass|(Tengu) |Leon|Lei Fang|Ein | +--------+------+----+--------+----+--------+-----+ Bayman and Tengu are hidden to begin with. Bayman will be released first, Tengu after. Again, I'm not sure about the DC version. All characters start off with either 2 or 3 (usually 2) costumes. The more you play as them, the more costumes will be released. Kasumi Nationality: Japanese Fighting Style: Ninjutsu Age: N/A Height: 5'2" Weight: 106 lbs. Occupation: Ninja Reason For Participating: Looking for her brother, Hayate. Gen Fu Nationality: Chinese Fighting Style: Xinyi Liuhe Quan Age: 65 Height: 5'7" Weight: 172 lbs. Occupation: Bookstore Owner Reason For Participating: For the money. His granddaughter is ill and he needs the money to buy her the required treatment. As he says, "There is a saying that the nose of the Tengu can cure any illness." At the end of the first DOA tournament, he vowed to seal away the destructive power of his "Iron Fist" stance but he has been forced to go back on his word. Just one more fight... Tina Armstrong Nationality: American Fighting Style: Professional Wrestling Age: 22 Height: 5'9" Weight: 115 lbs. Occupation: Wrestler Reason For Participating: Popularity. Plain and simple. Bayman Nationality: Russian Fighting Style: Russian Martial Arts Age: 31 Height: 6'0" Weight: 231 lbs. Occupation: Assassin Reason For Participating: Not sure, but it's got something to do with him and Leon -- that I'm sure of. Zack Nationality: American Fighting Style: Self-Taught Thai-Style Boxing Age: 25 Height: 5'11" Weight: 172 lbs. Occupation: DJ Reason For Participating: MONEY! Jahn-Lee Nationality: Chinese Fighting Style: Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee's Style) Age: 20 Height: 5'8" Weight: 165 lbs. Occupation: Bouncer Reason For Participating: Jahn-Lee claims that it is his destiny to win. I guess he's here to prove it to himself and to everyone else. Ayane Nationality: Japanese Fighting Style: Ninjutsu Age: N/A Height: 5'2" Weight: 104 lbs. Occupation: Ninja Reason For Participating: To destroy Kasumi so that she can have Hayate (Ein) to herself. Ryu Hayabusa Nationality: Japanese Fighting Style: Ninjutsu Age: 23 Height: 5'10" Weight: 154 lbs. Occupation: Curio Shop Owner Reason For Participating: He promised "his friend" (Ein/Hayate I think it was) that he would protect Kasumi and not let her die so he is here to watch over her. Helena Nationality: French Fighting Style: Pi Qua Quan Age: 21 Height: 5'7" Weight: 108 lbs. Occupation: Opera Singer Reason For Participating: To avenge her mother's assassination at the hands of Ayane (Helena's mother took the bullet meant for Helena.) Bass Armstrong Nationality: American Fighting Style: Professional Wrestling Age: 46 Height: 6'5" Weight: 346 lbs. Occupation: Wrestler Reason For Participating: Bass is the overprotective father of Tina. Not wanting his favourite daughter to get hurt, he enters the tournament to protect her. Tengu Nationality: Unknown Fighting Style: Tengu Do Age: 1500 (@__@) Height: 7'1" (!!@__@!!) Weight: 500 lbs. Occupation: Unknown Reason For Participating: Dunno, to beat the crap out of everyone else?? Leon Nationality: Italian Fighting Style: Russian Martial Arts Age: 42 Height: 6'4" Weight: 282 lbs. Occupation: Mercenary Reason For Participating: Leon's love, Roland, was killed on their last trip together. Before she died, she told Leon "The man Roland loves is the strongest man in the world." Wanting to prove her right and to fulfill his love's final request, he entered the tournament in an attempt to become the strongest man in the world. Nothing else matters. Lei Fang Nationality: Chinese Fighting Style: T'ai Chi Quan Age: 19 Height: 5'4" Weight: 110 lbs. Occupation: College Student Reason For Participating: Lei Fang has a strong rivalry with Jahn-Lee and is therefore in the tournment to try to defeat him. Ein (Hayate) Home: Unidentified (Presumably Japanese) Fighting Style: Karate (Possibly Ninjitsu as well) Age: 23 Height: 5'11" Weight: 165 lbs. Occupation: Karate Instructor Reason For Participating: Ein suffered amnesia after an unfortunate accident in Germany. Ein as he is now known (Ein means "1" in German, by the way) is participating in the DOA2 tournament to find out more about himself and to try to recover the missing parts of his memory. Tag Teams --------- In this section I shall detail all the possible Tag Teams and show what happens in each. EVERY character (including Tengu) has a minimum of two Tag Throws. A few characters (like Tina and Bass) have more than two Tag Throws, although this depends on their team mate. One is the Basic Tag Throw and works on all teams. The motion is Back + Tag (Free, Punch & Kick or any of the shoulder buttons.) The second is the Variable Tag Throw and works only on certain Tag Teams. The motion is Towards, Towards + Tag. If the team you chose is not "Special" (i.e. they don't work together), then this motion will give you the Basic Tag Throw animation. If the team _is_ Special, then you'll get a different Double Team animation. As far as I know, Tengu will NOT make a "Special" team with anyone else in the game. An important note: Some Tag Teams only work one way. For example, Kasumi will work with Bass (i.e. there's a "Variable" throw from Bass to Kasumi), but Bass won't work with Kasumi and although you will get a different animation for the Variable Throw from Kasumi to Bass, you'll get the _same_ animation for Bass to Kasumi's Variable Tag Throw as their Basic Tag Throw. In other words, some teams work one way only and some teams have the same animation for both the Variable and the Basic Tag Throws. Bearing mind that some Teams _will_ work both ways (like Jahn-Lee to Lei Fang and Lei Fang to Jahn-Lee.) Where teams don't work, I'll simply say "Basic" in the "Variable" description, indicating that the Variable Tag Throw gives the same animation as the Basic Tag Throw. So, just to summarise, there are three categories of Tag Throws: Basic (Back + Tag), Variable (Towards, Towards + Tag) and Extra (Varies.) For each character on every tag team, I will tell you what happens if they are tagged TO and tagged from FROM. Where relevant, I'll also tell you the motions of the Extra Tag Team throws. Just to make sure you understand this chart, the character in asterisks (for example *Kasumi*) is the character _starting_ the Tag Throw. The characters indented below this character are the characters _finishing_ the Tag Throw. So: *Kasumi* Gen-Fu Means Kasumi is starting the throw and Gen-Fu is finishing it. If (WALL) appears, this means that the animation is slightly different if you or the opponent is/are near a wall. For example, Gen-Fu to Lei Fang's Variable Throw usually sends the opponent crashing into the ground. If the opponent gets knocked into the wall, Lei Fang will automatically follow up with a Shoulder Barge/Iron Mountain. Obviously this doesn't happen if the throw is executed in the middle of the arena. If the term *COMBO* appears, this means that the Tag Throw can be comboed or followed up into something else. BTW: I'm not sure I've got all the Extra Tag Throws in the game. If you do know of any I've missed, let me know at [email protected]. (I've left out Tengu in this list because he will never make a "Special" team with anyone -- at least not that I found. His Tag Throw is the Tengu Foot Stomp when he finishes the throw and Irish Whip when he starts it.) *Kasumi* Gen-Fu Basic: Irish Whip = Upwards Pushing Launcher Variable: Basic Extra: N/A Tina Basic: Irish Whip = Arm Take Down Variable: Basic Extra: N/A Bayman Basic: Irish Whip = Chicken Wing Face Lock (WALL) Variable: Basic Extra: N/A Zack Basic: Irish Whip = Spinning Back Elbow Variable: Basic Extra: N/A Jahn-Lee Basic: Irish Whip = Dragon Stomp Variable: Basic Extra: N/A Ayane Basic: Irish Whip = Twirling Arm Take Down Variable: Spinning Face Drop Kick (Version 1) Extra: N/A Hayabusa Basic: Irish Whip = Uppercut Launcer *COMBO* Variable: Cross Slash Knife Hand Thrust Extra: N/A Helena Basic: Irish Whip = Arm Lock Take Down Variable: Face Kick = Arm Throw = Spinning Knee Drop Extra: N/A Bass Basic: Irish Whip = Power Slam *COMBO* Variable: Reverse Roundhouse = Clothesline Extra: N/A Leon Basic: Irish Whip = Chicken Wing Face Lock (WALL) Variable: Basic Extra: N/A Lei Fang Basic: Irish Whip = Shoulder Tip (WALL) Variable: Basic Extra: Ein Basic: Irish Whip = Reverse Knife Hand Strike Variable: Double Take Down Extra: N/A *Gen-Fu* Kasumi Basic: Irish Whip = Knife Hand Thrust Variable: Upwards Pushing Launcher = Mid-Air Drop Kick Extra: N/A Tina Basic: Irish Whip = Arm Take Down Variable: Push Off = German Suplex *COMBO* Extra: N/A Bayman Basic: Irish Whip = Chicken Wing Face Lock (WALL) Variable: Sandwich Shoulder Charge Extra: N/A Zack Basic: Irish Whip = Spinning Back Elbow Variable: Shoulder Pop = Flying Kick Extra: N/A Jahn-Lee Basic: Irish Whip = Dragon Stomp Variable: Basic Extra: N/A Ayane Basic: Irish Whip = Twirling Arm Take Down Variable: Upwards Pushing Launcher = Mid-Air Drop Kick (Similar to Gen-Fu = Kasumi's Double Team.) Here I'll tell you what each individual taunts has and, in the case of the during battle taunts, tell you what they look like. Kasumi Pre-Battle: "You can't stand in my way!" "Why?" During Battle: Twirling Petal Dance (no dialogue) Post-Battle: "This is 'Mugen-Tenshin' style!" "I must move on. Good-bye!" "I'm sorry. Are you alright?" "You can't defeat me!" Gen-Fu Pre-Battle: "Shall I start?" "This is getting a little tiring for me..." During Battle: "Yoshi!" (Cross-Legged Taunt) Post-Battle: "Look at my Iron Fist!" "I may or may not win, but to lose is The Way of The Fool!" "It is youth that makes you weak." "Lazybones!" "This old man is not that easy..." "'Tanden' is weak!" Tina Pre-Battle: "No-one can stop me now!" "Here I come!" "It's just the beginning!" During Battle: "Come on(!)" {Gestures seductively} "Let's go!" Post-Battle: "Nice try, this is for you..." "Good, I can sleep well tonight." Bayman Pre-Battle: "Are you ready to die?" "I was waiting for you, Leon." (To Leon) During Battle: Post-Battle: "You're not as strong as you look." {Laughs} {Cracks his neck twice} Zack Pre-Battle: "Did ya wait long?" During Battle: Post-Battle: "Aw, man! That wasn't nothin'!" "There ain't no enemies in human kind!" (To Bass) "Who the Hell are you, anyway?" (To Leon) "Easy!" (With Leon) Jahn-Lee Pre-Battle: "I am the winner!" "Make the first move!" During Battle: {Shouts like Bruce Lee} Post-Battle: "My fist never betrays me!" "You haven't progressed at all!" "You lose!" "This isn't the place for you." (To Lei Fang) "Now do you see the difference between you an me?" "_This_ is martial arts." Ayane Pre-Battle: "Get out of my way!" "Sorry, I'm not sweet!" During Battle: Post-Battle: "You scum!" "You're annoying me again!" "I'll let you go this time." "Hey! You didn't have time to sing!" (To Helena) {Walks Away} "You're through!" (With Ein) Hayabusa Pre-Battle: "'Nin'" "Make up your mind!" "For my friend's sake, I cannot lose!" During Battle: "Farewell" (Kneeling taunt) "Rin" Post-Battle: "It's a pity..." "Farewell." "Fare-thee-well!" "The storm is about to rage!" "If your soul is imperfect, life if difficult." Helena Pre-Battle: "This is going to be a good match." "I cannot lose." "You are not my concern." "The curtain has just risen." During Battle: Post-Battle: "It isn't you." "You are not the one." "Did you think that you could defeat me." "Only victory can bring me to the truth." "This is perfect harmony." Bass Pre-Battle: "I won't have any mercy, even for a beginner!" "I won't have any mercy, even for a woman!" "WRESTLING IS THE BADDEST!!" "Enough! When are you going to wake up?" "C'mon, focus!" "I won't give up my Championship Belt!" During Battle (All involve Bass stamping his feet): "Yeah!" "Alright!" "TINA!" "It's SHOW TIME!!" Post-Battle: "You're too immature!" "I won't give Tina to _you_!" (to Zack) "I'm the champion!" "I will accept any challenge, any time, any where!" "In the ring, you won't be spared." (to Tina) "Follow me, start from the beginning!" Tengu Pre-Battle: "You brat!" During Battle: Post-Battle: "You make me laugh!" "You are pathetic!" "You're ridiculous!" "This is the Art of Tengu!" Leon Pre-Battle: "Do you want to die?" "I am a professional." During Battle: Post-Battle: "It's like the desert." "Huh. Death." {Laughs} Lei Fang Pre-Battle: "Hello!" "More! Not enough!" During Battle: "No, no, no!" (Jumps up and down) "No, no, no, no!" (Jumps up and down) "Got it!" (Waves her arms around) Post-Battle: "Sorry(!)" "It's not a matter of power." "Useless! Don't you understand?" Ein Pre-Battle: "I'm coming." "When will my memory return?" "Nothing can get in my way!" "Don't come near me!" During Battle: Post-Battle: "Oh, my head." "It was a good fight!" "This feeling... It's coming back!" "Victory excites me!" Tag Team Taunts --------------- Usually, when facing off against another tag team, both your characters will do their individual "get ready" animations. However, if you have a "Special" tag team (i.e. one that has a different "Variable" tag throw), then chances are that they will have a different opening and closing animation. For example, at the start of the match, Jahn-Lee and Lei-Fang start of back-to-back with Lei-Fang facing away from the camera. Lei-Fang moves from behind Jahn-Lee and they both get ready. Lei-Fang says her "Hello(!)" taunt. At the end, both do a Swan Kick (Karate Kid) and Lei-Fang mirrors Jahn-Lee's taunt pose. Jahn-Lee says "_This_ is Martial Arts." The pose? Well, it's like Helena's low-crouching pose. In general, you only get different tag-team "get ready" poses if there is a Variable throw in _both_ directions. So, even though Gen-Fu has a Variable tag throw to Lei-Fang, Lei-Fang doesn't have one back to Gen-Fu, so they don't have a different "get ready" animation. Some of the animations can be quite funny. Tina and Bass for example are cuddling each other and when Tina and Zack win, they try to play pat-a-cake wrestler style and Zack flunks, saying "That ain't right..." Bass and Leon/Bayman do it properly when they win. Also, when Leon and Zack win, Zack taps Leon on the shoulder, grabs his hand and does a funny wavy motion with his arms. Leon pulls his arm away and holds his head in disbelief. Others are quite flashy. For example, Lei-Fang and Helena both bow together and when Ayane/Kasumi and Hayabusa win, they both teleport away. Tag Combos (*To be completed*) ------------------------------ Unlike Tekken Tag or Capcom's Vs. series, you can tag in and out in the middle of a combo. This can lead to insanely high combo hit strings. My record so far was 11 hits is Hayabusa and Kasumi and I fluked that -- I haven't been able to recreate it! :-( Basically, tag combos have simple rules: 1. The starting character must not send the opponent flying across the ring. 2. The starting character must hit the opponent at least once before tagging out. 3. The tagging character must also hit the opponent at least once. 4. If the starting character only hits the opponent once, that hit must be a "stun" (leaves the opponent reeling for a brief moment) or a "critical" hit. 5. Provided you can keep the opponent airbourne, you should (theoretically) be able to keep a combo going forever. An example combo would be: Kasumi: Back+Punch x4, Tag, Zack: Punch x2, Kick = 7 Hits. Another would be: Kasumi: Back+Punch x4, Tag, Hayabusa: Punch x2, Kick x3 = 9 Hits. Or, how about this: Tina: Punch x2, Tag, Zack: Punch x2, Tag, Tina: Punch x3 = 7 Hits. Pick and mix your teams and combos and experiment with the moves. Some can be tagged out, some can't. For example, Ein's Punch x3 finishes off with a power punch. You can tag out after the second hit (they stagger between hits two and three anyway, so they can't counter during the tag.) If you've got some flashy or devastating combos, let me know so I can put them up here. My e-mail address is [email protected] Challenge --------- My sister brought this up when I pressed START too early when I lost against Tengu and it seemed like he said "This is the Art of You Brat." So, the challenge here, it to take all of the quotes from either pre, during or post battles -- one from each character, and try to make a small paragraph that makes reasonable sense. Here's my first attempt: "Hello, you brat, I'm coming, no-one can stop me now. Did ya wait long? Make up your mind. Shall I start? Make the first move. This is going to be a good match, you can't stand in my way. Do you want to die? I've been waiting for you, Leon. WRESTLING IS THE BADDEST! Sorry, I'm not sweet. If you've got other ones, let me know (see earlier for my e-mail address), it'll be a laugh to see what you can come up with. :) ***************************************************************************** FAQ (C) Loopy 2001, DOA2 & DOA2:Hardcore (C) Tecmo ***************************************************************************** *****************************************************************************
