Legal Bit and Contact............................................. *LEGAL =============================================================================== I. I N T R O D U C T I O N ............................................*INTRO =============================================================================== Welcome to my Final Fantasy III walkthrough! I couldn't resist buying this game for the iPad and it really looks and sounds fantastic and plays beautifully. If anything it's better than the DS version as you don't have to worry about the online aspect of letters to "friends" and the larger screen gives you the chance to appreciate the lovely details of weapon and costume changes, the enemies and the game world. This FAQ has been adapted from my walkthrough for the DS version of the game, and is based on a full playthrough of the iPad version. There are some minor differences: notably dropping the online Mognet sub quest, as well as utilising the touch screen for all actions and altering the prices for a few things. The arrangement of this FAQ is pretty straightforward: * The Game Basics section outlines the controls, what all the commands mean, and how to utilise the menu system to your best advantage. * The Walkthrough takes you through the game location by location describing where to find all the treasure, and giving strategies for all the bosses. * There are a couple of extra sections that feature the unique features of the game: the job system and the Mognet sidequests. * The Lists section includes lots of lists of items, stuff you can find, buy and equip, and monsters you'll encounter. SPELLING DISCLAIMER I use British English, but the game uses American so you might notice some discrepancies in the spelling of some words. The most common differences are defence/defense, and armour/armor. I use British spelling for anything I'm writing about, but where I'm quoting the game, or listing things from the game, I copy down the American version. =============================================================================== II. Controls ------------ Let's start with the controls, as indeed the game does, just "Touch to start". Everything is beautifully simple. Touch the screen anywhere and a large circular Directional pad appears under your finger. Gently push in any direction and your character will move. You don't touch the characters to move them. The main screen appears with two words at the top right corner: MAP and MENU. Touch the Map to view the world map and touch the map once to exit from that screen. Touch the Menu to view all the options. (See Section 3.) There are some other unique features of the iPad game's controls. ! - To talk to someone, investigate something or activate a switch you must touch the exclamation mark. Sometimes you need to move around to view this mark. For example, if standing to the right or left of a treasure chest or person fails to prompt the mark to appear. Also used to board transport. Touch the mark while standing next to a ship to set sail. BACK - Appears at the top left corner of the battle screen or at the bottom of a menu screen. Touch to return to the previous screen or cancel a battle command. SPEECH - This appears under the Menu word and is used for party chat with BUBBLE a current guest party member. ZOOM - You can get a close up view by placing two fingers on the screen and moving them apart. -------------------- 02. Saving Your Game -------------------- You can ONLY save your game on the world map. Save EVERY TIME you leave a village or dungeon, and it's best to save before entering a new location too. You can have up to three separate save files. Quicksave is available at any time (except during a battle or event). This is your safety net if you find yourself lost or tired in a long dungeon and you don't want to Teleport out and have to do it all again. Make a quick save and quit the game. When you reload you can continue from this save, although the save itself will be erased. To load the game or continue select the "return to title" option from the Configuration 2 menu. Of course, with the iPad you can simply leave it alone to turn off and start again where you left off by sliding the unlock switch at the bottom of the screen. ------------- 03. Main Menu ------------- The menu screen shows an overview of all four characters with their current job, level HP and MP. Down the right side of the screen is a list of options: Touch the word to highlight that option. Item......View the inventory. - Use: select to use one of the characters - Sort: automatic sorting by item/magic/weapons/armour - Key Items: see all important items To move an item hold it down and drag it into a different position Magic.....Touch a character to view their equipped magic and make changes. Magic is arranged by Level and each job allows different levels of magic spells. Each character can equip up to 3 spells for each of 8 levels. - Use: Use a spell on a character - Learn: Select to view all magic that has been found or bought and select to add this magic to that character. - Remove: Select currently equipped magic and you can remove it and it returns to the inventory. - Exchange: Shows all characters. All the magic from the selected character will be transferred to the highlighted character and their magic will be acquired. Equipment..Touch a character to view their current equipment: that includes: R.Hand Head Note that two weapons can be equipped, or L.Hand Body one weapon and a shield, or a bow and Arms arrows. - Equip: Select a weapon or armour slot to be shown all options to change equipment. - Remove: Eemoves the selected equipment - Remove All: Shortcut to remove all equipment at once. Status.....Touch a character to view their full status screen. This shows current experience and experience to the next level. Current job and job level, HP and MP. MP is divided into 8 levels of magic and how much is available for different levels of magic depends on the job. Stats for: Strength : power of physical attacks Agility : turn speed Vitality : influences HP increase on level up Intellect: effectiveness of black magic Mind : effectiveness of white magic Attack : total with weapons Defence : total with armour Magic Defence: total with equipment Formation..Touch one character's portrait and then another to exchange them in the list. This changes the order of the party so the lead character can be altered. Slide a character portrait to the right to place them on the back row. Do the same again to move them to the left, placing them on the front row. Characters receive less damage on the back row but attack with less force with some weapons, such as swords or axes. Magic attacks are just as effective from the back row. Job........Touch a character to view their current job and all jobs available. Choose a job and see the number of battles required for the adjustment phase. All equipment is removed when a job is changed so make sure to re-equip! Config There are two pages for the Configuration Menu on the iPad. Config 1...Change these settings: - Text.Speed: Slow/Normal/Fast - Cursor: Default/Memorise It's best to have this on memorise as it means that you will be able to find the same item on subsequent turns. Very handy if you're using a staff as an item to cast a spell. - Default Move: Walk/Run Config 2...Music - a sliding scale goes from 1 - 10 with 10 being the loudest. Sound - a sliding scale goes from 1 - 10 with 10 being the loudest. Lock Screen - On/Off Misc. This is REALLY IMPORTANT! Back to Title - You can go back to the title screen if you want to load a different save whilst playing the game. Control Hints - This is the Help page that acts like a manual and includes information on the following: - Battles - Formations - Rearranging Items - Ships and Vehicles - Saving - Screen Zoom Quicksave..Save the game anywhere. This is a temporary save and will be deleted when loaded. It's really just an emergency measure. Save.......Only available on the world map. ------------------- 04. Status Ailments ------------------- Wellsprings! In town and dungeons you can find blue springs, ponds or fountains. These will heal the party's HP and MP, remove bad status effects or even remove KO status. Which ones do what varies according to location. Inn and Beds! In some towns and dungeons you can restore HP and MP by resting in a bed for free, or pay to stay at an inn. Some status ailments cannot be cured through sleep: Mini, Toad, Petrification and KO. Ribbons! The Ribbon headgear protects the wearer from ALL bad status effects and can be worn by anyone whatever their job. The Aegis Shield does the same, but can only be worn by some shield bearing jobs. Esuna! This spell cures all negative status effects except KO. - Subsides After Battle - .---------------.--------------------------.----------------------------------. | Ailment | Cure: Action/Magic | Effect | |---------------+--------------------------+----------------------------------| | Paralysis | Wears off / - | Paralyses body, cannot act | | Sleep | Hit to wake/ - | Fast asleep, cannot act | | Confusion | Hit to restore sense | Disorientation, hits randomly | | Gradual | / Stona | Body turns to stone over time | | Petrification | | | | Slow | Wears off / Haste | Slows down the character | | Stop | Wears off / - | Prevents from moving, cannot act | |_______________|__________________________|__________________________________| - Persists After Battle - .---------------.--------------------------.----------------------------------. | Ailment | Cure: Item/Magic | Effect | |---------------+--------------------------+----------------------------------| | KO | Phoenix Down/Raise, Arise| No HP and knocked out. Shopping ------------ You can sell anything for half the buying price. Always buy consumable items in bulk as there's a discount if you buy 4 or more. The more you buy, the bigger the discount. The number of items for sale varies from shop to shop and sometimes you can buy duplicates of spells (for example) which can be useful. ------------------------ 06. Storage and Sorting! ------------------------ Select the Item menu and all things are displayed: weapons, armour, healing and battle items. The last item you bought or found will appear at the bottom of the list. Fortunately you can "Sort" them and this option puts everything in order. Items will appear first, with healing items over two columns on one page, followed by attack items and any magic spells not yet equipped. After that you'll see weapons and finally armour. Select Sort a second time and the order changes, with weapons appearing first, then armour and items, so you can arrange groups as you wish. Key Items are listed on a separate menu page. You can also move individual items (and groups of the same items) around, for example, if you wanted Shurikens to appear at the top of the list to avoid having to scroll through a whole load of stuff during a battle, but keep the rest of the items easily available as well. To move anything, touch the required item and press down, then drag it to where you want. All items and weapons are also available from the Item battle menu .The only restriction to the number of things you can carry is that you cannot have more than 99 of each item. However, there are ways around that. If 99 arrows are equipped to a bow user, you can also carry 99 in the inventory. Also, you'll be able to store excess items with a Fat Chocobo, when you find a Chocobo Woods and use the Gysahl Greens item on the central tree to make it appear! --------------------------- 07. World Map and Locations --------------------------- When you enter a new location the name of it will appear on the screen for a few seconds. Towns and villages will also appear on the world map shown as a white building, caves are shown as a pink cavern, and mountain access is a blue cavern. Castles appear as small castles, and temples as a pink building. Your current position appears as a green ball above an arrow. The item, Gnomish Bread and the spell Sight will show a more detailed map, including locations not yet visited. -------------------- 08. Special Features -------------------- Shining Spots! In towns and dungeons touch the screen with two fingers and spread them apart to zoom in for a closer look at screen. Sometimes an item such as a pot or rock will display sparkling spots and an exclamation mark appears. Touch this to trigger an event or find something. Allies! From time to time an additional party member will tag along behind the team. Talk to them using the speech bubble icon. button. They will join in battles with a variety of skills, but they cannot be controlled by the player. Mognet! After completing events in the Sealed Mines and obtaining the first set of new jobs you will encounter a Moogle in every town who runs the Mognet postal service. Various characters you've met will send letters, BUT you must have the correct person in the lead position on screen to get some of them. For example: to get letters from Topapa in Ur you must use Luneth, letters from Takka come to Refia, those from Sara are addressed to Ingus and letters from ALus are directed to Arc. If you find that some letters are missing just change the leading character before talking to the Moogle. Music and Dance! You can play a piano in a bar, and pink clothed girls will perform a special dance for you in various locations. -------------- 09. Characters -------------- These descriptions are taken from the manual for the DS game. Luneth An orphan raised by Nina and Elder Topapa in the village of Ur. Adventurous by nature, his curiosity gets the better of him as he tumbles into a hole created by the great earthquake. Arc Another orphan raised by Topapa, and Luneth's best friend. Unlike Luneth, he prefers reading over gamboling in the wild. His studies endow him with great knowledge that more than makes up for his shyness. Refia Raised in Kazus by the mythril smith Takka, whose rigorous training led her to run away from home...again. Ignus A loyal soldier of King Sasune's army, he narrowly escaped the Djinn's curse. His prime concern is finding the missing Princess Sara. -------- 10. Jobs -------- The game features a job system where characters can take on a vocation at will, and learn new spells, skills and abilities. However, these are job specific and if the job is changed the character does not retain anything learned. Each job has specific weapons and armour which requires an equipment change when the job is changed. New jobs become available each time a Crystal is found. Any character can take on any job and all jobs yield a special bonus item and stat bonus when reaching Level 99, but ONLY if you undertake the Mognet sidequest as well. As you level up the job character stats increase (depending on the nature of the job) and the number of attacks also increase. So a mage can inflict more damage with magic and a fighter has a chance of making multiple hits in one attack. Levelling up jobs is a function of any action taken during during a battle, and works independently from the experience gained for winning battles. Simply put, ANY of these actions taken during a battle will add points towards the job level: * Attack * Guard (not available for some jobs) * Item use * Use of Job's Ability Acquire 100 Job Points to raise the Job's level. As the Job level increases characters will be able to do more damage in battle, hit with better accuracy or heal more HP with spells, depending on the skills they have. One thing to be wary of is when you change jobs. There may be a transition time between jobs (which prevents you from changing jobs too often). During this time you have to fight a few battles before the new job's stats kick in. Job specific skills are available immediately, so you could change to a Thief to use their unlocking ability and then change back again to a Ranger (for example). ---------------- 11. Onion Knight ---------------- This is an additional Job that requires you to take particular action. Talk to the Mog using Luneth at the leading character to receive letters from Topapa. Eventually you'll get a fourth letter asking for help to find some children. Go to Ur to meet the Elder and then to Altar Cave to find the children. They give you an item that unlocks this job. =============================================================================== III. B A T T L E S Y S T E M ....................................... *BATTLE =============================================================================== ------------------- 1. Battle Commands ------------------ The battle system is turn-based. Your party takes turns to deal out damage or heal and then, it's the enemy's turn to do the same while you stand there and take it. You'll only see the first three commands on the battle menu screen and must scroll down, touching the white arrow at the right edge of the commands to see more. You must select commands for all characters before the action starts. Some commands, such as magic and guard, won't always appear as they are dependent on the character's current job. Touch the BACK command at the top left of the battle screen to cancel commands. - Attack - Hit the target using the equipped weapon (or barehanded). You can hit team members as well as the enemy (to wake them up if asleep for example) by touching the word PLAYER at the top right of the screen and then choosing one ally from the names of the team. - Magic - Use a spell by touching the magic from the list that appears and then the target. You can either touch the monster with the cursor over its head, or the named monster, seen at the bottom left of the screen. If you want to target all enemies then touch the ALL command at the top right of the screen. To target the party with an attack spell touch the PLAYER command, also at the top right of the screen. This will show a list of all the named characters so you can select one of them as the target. Any healing spell will automatically show the list of party members. However, if you want to target enemies with such spells just touch the word ENEMY that appears at the top right of the battle screen and then you can target them all or just one. (Used when attacking undead enemies with healing spells!) - Guard - Select this option to defend from an attack on the next turn. Reduces damage received. - Item - Choose an item from the inventory and then the target: an ally or enemy. Touch the white arrow mark to scroll down the item inventory or just move your finger down the page. Some weapons can be used as an item to cast a spell with NO use of MP. For example the Light Staff used as an item by a mage will cast Thunder. Just touch it to select it. - Equipment - Change equipment during a battle. This does NOT take up a turn and another command can be selected after changing equipment. Remember that characters can equip two weapons, two shields, a bow and arrows, a weapon and a shield, or even two shields! Some weapons (such as harps) are two-handed so only one can be equipped. Changing equipment can allow for different elemental attacks to be used on different enemies. - Front/Rear - Move a character between the front and back line. Front line characters do more damage but have lower defence. Back line characters do less damage (unless they are using a bow and arrows or other long range weapon) but have more defence. Changing lines takes up a turn and occurs instantly. - Run Away - Escape. This command appears at the top right of battle screen. Use this command for every character and it only needs one to be successful for the whole party to flee. BUT if the party is attacked while attempting to run the damage is much greater, since defence is lowered. ----------------------------------- 2. Back Attacks/Pre-emptive Strikes ----------------------------------- Sometimes the enemies get the jump on your party and that means that they have an extra turn and your back line will be at the front. That's not so good if you're using front line fighters as they won't be able to do as much damage as usual. If you surprise the enemy you get an extra turn as well as the first turn. ---------- 3. Enemies ---------- Enemies appear singly, in pairs, or as a group of three, and that's the maximum you will ever see. Groups can be mixed, or identical, but that doesn't matter too much because magic can still be used to target a whole group. Encounters are random, but the rate of encounters varies a lot, from very low to quite high. Status magic is not very effective and it's better to attack with elemental spells and weapons rather than waste a turn trying to cause sleep or blindness, for example. However, weapon attacks with added effects, such as poison, are often effective Bosses are always visible and they will usually have two attacks on each round, with the more powerful ones able to make three, or even four attacks. They tend to use both all party magic and physical attacks. =============================================================================== IV. H I N T S A N D T I P S ........................................*TIPS =============================================================================== * Save a lot. Dungeons don't have any save points! * Guard a lot if you want a fight to last longer. If a party member is slow to act it might mean that they don't gain any job points, so make sure that everyone does something! * Most magic can be applied to one enemy/ally or ALL enemies/allies and each spell only uses 1 MP. Touch the "All" command to target all enemies or the whole party. Touch the "Player" button to choose a named ally or all of them. * Using a staff from the Item inventory during a battle will save on MP. These can only be used by a mage type character. * Experience points from winning battles are divided amongst the team. If you want to level up someone on their own, then kill off the rest of the team (remove their equipment so they die more easily!) and they won't get any experience. * Buy consumable items in bulk! Buying 4 or more gives a discount that increases with the number bought. * Always search towns and nearby dungeons for free stuff before buying anything! * Each job raises the character's stats in different ways whilst they have that job, but ONLY vitality gives a permanent boost on levelling up. Giving high vitality jobs to characters will help to boost their HP. * Equip two weapons to fighter classes for additional attack power. Although 9999 is the maximum recorded amount of damage, in fact it's possible to cause more than that, but you won't know exactly how much. * If in doubt, level up!. Even just one extra level can make a difference in some boss battles, and the higher the level of a job, the more effective it will be. =============================================================================== V. W A L K T H R O U G H ................. *WALK =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 01. ALTAR CAVE .......................................................... *W01 =============================================================================== TASK : Find the exit and defeat the boss. Obtain all treasure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Items [7] : Cave A - Leather Shield, Potion x3, Longsword, Antarctic Wind x2 [7] Cave B - Leather Cap, Bronze Bracers x2, Longsword x2, Bronze Knuckles, Sleep (Black Magic Lv.1) Wellspring : Yes. HP/MP restoration. Enemies : 001: Goblin, 002: Carbuncle, 003: Eye Fang, 004: Blue Wisp ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The game begins with a boy falling into a cave and you'll quickly gain control and can name him with a maximum of 6 characters, but they ask you not to use emoticons, although in fact, you can. Choose "Done" to give him his default name of Luneth. He'll move a few steps and encounter three goblins for the first battle. He has 32 HP and is equipped with just a Knife with attack of +8 (and a Vest with defence of +1). Check the Equipment or Item inventory during the battle to see these details by touching the white triangle at the right edge of the three battle commands. The first set shows: Attack, Magic and Guard, and the second set shows Item, Equipment and Rear. The latter allows you to move Luneth to the back row, but that's not something to do right now. Touch the BACK command at the top left corner of the screen to return to the first three options. The only thing you can do is to attack one goblin at a time since Luneth doesn't have any magic or items. A helpful hand cursor appears on the goblin group and you can move it to choose any of the three, either by touching the goblin or touching the named Goblin at the lower left of the screen. One attack with the knife should kill one and their attacks will hurt you for 2 HP so it's not hard to win, even if an attack misses altogether, which it might! You'll get 30 Gil and 3 experience points and might obtain an item too, most likely a Potion, but if you're very lucky you could get a valuable Phoenix Down. (Note that these are precious, since you cannot buy them anywhere.) After the battle you are free to move around and can look at the menu by touching the command at the upper right of the screen. This shows you everything at once, and you can Quicksave here as well as changing the configuration for the cursor and text speed. I'd suggest moving speed to Fast and changing the Default Move to Run. Note that Quicksave data is lost when you load the game again and using this option will end your current game, and take you back to the start screen. There's nothing else to do as you don't have any items for healing, and there's nothing to find at the right side of the save. Carry on walking up the cave where you'll find two treasure chests. The left one contains a [LEATHER SHIELD] and you can equip this by clicking on the menu icon and then touching the Equipment menu. Then, touch Luneth to view his equipment. You'll see that he has the option to equip TWO weapons or a weapon and shield. For now, just go with the shield for his other hand. The second chest contains a [POTION] which you can use to heal up, or wait until health is at around 10 HP before doing that if this is your only Potion. One more battle should raise Luneth's level to 2 and you'll notice that his job level rises too. Currently he's a Freelancer which means that he can equip most weapons and armour. Job levels rise faster than overall levels as they are based on actions taken during battle, not experience points. Each action: attack, guard, using an item or the job's ability (Magic) adds 20 points to the job level and 100 points are required to increase the level. So, five actions results in an increase. (There are some variations in the points awarded accorded to job and overall job level but this acts as a good basic calculation.) Walk a few steps to the north and you'll find a dead end, but a suspicious looking rock by the left cave wall. You're instructed to place two fingers on the screen and spread them away from each other and this gives you a close up view of the rock. You'll see it sparkle and should move Luneth next to the rock and touch it when you see the exclamation point appear. The rock is a switch that opens the wall of the cave. Carry on to the right and open another chest to find a [LONGSWORD] weapon. Equip this instead of the Knife. You could replace the shield so you have two weapons equipped with an overall attack power of 18. You don't need this power for the goblins so it's not really worth it, and even the slightly more powerful enemies in the next cave can be defeated with just the sword. The Blue Wisp might need two hits but it does more damage than the rest so again, the shield will help you out. Walk up the steps into another cavern where the enemies are a bit more varied, with a blue Carbuncle and a red Eye Fang, usually appearing together. One hit should kill each of these but the Blue Wisp will need two attacks. Go right to find a chest with a [POTION], and left for another chest with an attack item [ANTARCTIC WIND]. Hold onto this as it casts a powerful ice spell when thrown at an enemy. Back at the main path, walk up to a T junction and open a chest with another [POTION]. Go right where you'll see another chest at the side of the path with another [ANTARCTIC WIND]. Just a couple more steps and you'll arrive at a WELLSPRING. This welcome water heals all HP and MP, but you'll have to move to the edge of the water and touch the ! mark when you see it. If you managed to make it this far without using a potion you can congratulate yourself on your ability to hoard. By this point Luneth should have reached Level 3 and with full health again you could spend some time fighting to raise your level to 4 if you wish, or to acquire some more potions from the enemies in preparation for the boss battle as there are no more items to be found. To check up on Luneth's status go to the menu and touch status, and then Luneth, to see the full details of all his stats and the experience required for him to reach the next level. From the Wellspring walk left to the end of the passage and then, up, to enter the boss's lair. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - LAND TURTLE | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 04 | 111 | 8 | 6 | 20 | 500 | None | Altar Cave | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Potion 2 - Antarctic Wind 3 - Antarctic Wind 4 - Antarctic Wind | | 5 - Bacchus's Cider 6 - Bacchus's Cider 7 - Arctic Wind 8 - Arctic Wind | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 2/3 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o One way to deal with this battle is to equip both the sword AND the knife and relinquish the shield. That gives you attack power of 18, although your defence will be cut to 1. (You can change equipment during the battle.) Just hack away and the boss will soon be defeated, especially as you might do double hits or even a critical attack. His attacks hurt you for 4 HP with the shield and double that without, but you can always use a Potion if health is getting too low for comfort. If you've dashed straight through without levelling up at all, then throw an Antarctic Wind item which attacks with a low level Blizzara ice magic spell causing around 40 HP damage. (It's hard to read the numbers!) Your chances of getting an item drop are not good so don't expect one. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o After the battle Luneth gets the classic messages about being the chosen one, the world in peril, yadda yadda, you know the kind of thing. Anyway, your new task is to find companions. You're back on the world map, and you have the option to turn around and go back inside the cave to find more treasure. If you just want to carry on and find the next party member then leave this until later, but don't forget it! Luneth should be at Level 3 with a Job level of 5/7 and you can save your game for the first time: go to the Menu to find a new option for SAVE, with three possible slots. You can also touch the MAP and see your precise location at the northeast of the world map. ---------------- ALTAR CAVE AGAIN ---------------- Back inside the cave you start at the north. The enemies are the same as before with mixed groups of Goblins, Carbuncle, Eye Fang and Blue Wisp. Walk down a few steps, and right where you can pass through a hidden opening in the east wall. This takes you into another section of the cave where you'll see two treasure chests, the first contains a [LEATHER CAP] and the second a [BRONZE BRACERS]. Equip these to head and arms respectively upping your defence to 3 without the shield. Walk left, back to the main cave and turn down into another new area. Go to the left and up, and you'll find the hole where Luneth fell down to the lower floor. There three more visible chests to the right of this cave. The first one contains another [LONGSWORD] which you can equip instead of the Knife, giving you even higher attack power of 20. The next has another [BRONZE BRACERS] and the third has a much more useful item, [SLEEP], which is your first magic spell! Go to the Magic menu and touch the arrow cursor to the "Learn" command. You'll now see the Sleep spell highlighted. Touch it to confirm the selection and Luneth now has some magic. It's a Level 1 spell requiring 3 MP to use. Avoid the hole in the floor, which will take you down to the cave where you started out in case you missed anything. If you want to go down again, then you'll find a warp point behind the crystal inside the boss room which deposits you back on the world map. Check out the other two treasure chests at the left side of the cave. The first has [BRONZE KNUCKLES] which will increase your attack power even more to 22 if equipped with the sword, and a second [LONGSWORD]. All this extra treasure will save you money, always a good thing at the start of an RPG. Walk back the way you came to return to the world map. Save your game again if you want, and and go a short distance to the south to enter the town of Ur. If you continue walking too far to the south the enemies are tougher, and the second town has a welcoming ghost which scares Luneth so he'll leave immediately. Just go to Ur. =============================================================================== 02. UR VILLAGE (PARMENI MOUNTAINS) ...................................... *W02 =============================================================================== TASK : Talk to the Elder, find Arc and rest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : South from Altar Cave Services : Item Shop, Inn (free), Bar, Weapon Shop, Armour Shop, Magic Shop Items [13] : Phoenix Down x2, Potions x5, Longsword, Eye Drops, Dagger, Cure (White Magic Lv.1), Antidote x2 Wellspring : Yes. Revive and HP/MP restoration Enemies : 001: Goblin ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Classic RPG town stuff, you're told to see the Elder and given a warning about a cursed town that also indicates the next destination. You'll get that information from the villagers at the left. The orange haired lady fills you in on the name and location of the King and his castle (to the west), and the local area. Enter the blue roofed elder's house and go through into the inner room where you'll find your mother, and the Elder Topapa who reveals a bit about your history and destiny. Yeah, yeah, I think we can just about figure out the story now. Talk to him again and he tells you to go to Kazus. Nina tells you to get hints from the Configuration 2 option, and warns you to save, often! Check that option and you'll see the CONTROL HINTS which is a help menu for the iPad. Touch the large arrows at the bottom of the screen to scroll through the pages. It gives instructions for: Battles, Formations, Rearranging Items, Ships and Vehicles, Saving and Screen Zoom. There's nothing to find inside the house, but before leaving turn to the left and check that blue fountain in the left corner. This is another Wellspring and fully heals you. (The one at the right does nothing for you, but revives anyone who dies once you have more party members.) Leave the house and talk to the blue robed old guy again and he tells you about using items on people. Use a Potion on them by touching Potion from the item menu and they give you a [PHOENIX DOWN]. (If you don't have any potions, then wait until you do!) The blue clothed man near the shops will explain how to attack by tapping on the enemy directly and to use the arrows to view all battle commands, or drag your finger up and down. Walk right, past the other orange haired girl and the Inn, and go through the trees. Talk to an old lady who tells you about potions in the well. Hop down the well and open three chests for [POTION], [POTION] and [POTION]. Go back and enter Inn, which also contains an Item Shop selling status healing items. It might be advisable to buy a couple of these, but you can find some and you don't need potions if you're trying to save cash. (I had around 800 Gil by this point.) One thing to note is that the cost of items DECREASES if you buy more than 3 at once. So, 4 potions costs 190 Gil, 5 - 237, 6 - 285, 7 - 332, 8 - 380, 9 - 427 and 10 - 460. Buying 11 at once costs 506 Gil, which is just 6 Gil more than the price of 10 if you bought them all one by one! Go through the door next to the item seller and you're inside the bar. You'll hear about a couple of other currently inaccessible locations: Canaan and Nelv Valley. The girl at the right will dance and you can play chopsticks on the piano! ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Potion | 50 | Restores 50 HP. You can use low-level magic but your base attributes are low. Guess this isn't a job we'll be sticking with once there's a chance to change. Check the empty bed and touch the ! mark and you can rest for free, healing your HP and MP. Might as well, although it takes longer than just a second. Walk up to find the rest of the shops. The weapon shop is inside the top right house, with the arms shop next door. Buy the better armour, but really that's all you need as you'll find a dagger in the village and a Bow and arrows in the next location. However, two extra Bracers will help when you find two more party members. There's a magic shop inside the left hut and you can buy one Poisona magic which you might as well! Zoom in on the upper left corner of the white flowers behind the girl, and you'll pick up a hidden [POTION]. Back in the village, head up the track behind the weapon shop and follow a grassy path to the storehouse. (The orange robed mage will tell you that you can take all the items inside the storehouse.) You'll encounter Goblins along the way. Face the door, standing at the water's edge, and spread your fingers, to get a close up on the grass. You'll find a sparkle, revealing ahidden [POTION]. Inside the storeroom talk to the blue bearded man who explains about switches that open hidden hidden passageways in towns and dungeons. You'll zoom in close and see a sparkle on the candle near the right wall. Move close to it and zoom the screen to see the sparkle and ! marK. Touch it to reveal a hidden passage to the right. Walk through the wall (you cannot change the camera to see it) and up the stairs in the next room. You'll discover 5 treasure chests, all yours for the taking! Starting at the left, the top row contains a [LONGSWORD], [EYEDROPS], and [CURE]: another magic you can equip. The bottom row has a [DAGGER] and [PHOENIX DOWN]. Return to the main room and walk close to the pots. Spread your fingers again to zoom in and you'll see sparkles on two of the pots. The top right one contains an [ANTIDOTE], and the lower left one has a second [ANTIDOTE]. Return to the village, rest if you need to, and equip the Sleep, Cure and Poisona magic. Go to the Magic slot on the menu, touch the "Learn" tab to place the cursor there and view the list of currently available magic. Select the spells to equip them. You can have up to 3 for each level, although as a Freelancer you can only use Level 1 magic. Then, exit to the world map. SAVE YOUR GAME! NOTE: you don't need to see the sparkles or use the close up view if you already know where to find hidden sparkle items. =============================================================================== 03. KAZUS TOWN .......................................................... *W03 =============================================================================== TASK : Talk to the ghosts and find the airship. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : South from Ur Services : None available on this visit Items [5] : Mythril Helm, Staff, Zeus's Wrath, Potion x2 Wellspring : Yes. HP/MP restoration Recruit : Arc, Refia Area Enemies: 001: Goblin, 005: Killer Bee, 007: Berserker, 006: Werewolf ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You'll probably only encounter Goblins on the way south, but if you walk west onto the sandy patch of ground near Kazus you might run into a powerful Berserker enemy who can damage you for around 20+ HP! With double weapons and the Leather Armour and at level 3 I barely survived two of these attacks, but defeated it with two of mine. Be careful if you wander too far from the path! Fortunately there are no enemies inside the cursed town and you'll find Arc waiting for you. You can walk straight past him into the town, but there's no point unless you want to level up some more with Luneth on his own. Talk to him and ARC joins the party at Level 3 as a Freelancer (job level 1). He's equipped with a Knife, Leather Cap and Leather Armor. Give him two Longswords and a Bronze Bracers. I also equipped him with the Cure and Poisona magic. Explore the town. The building directly ahead contains a healing fountain and the one to the right hosts three shops but the shopkeepers are all ghosts and won't sell you anything. You could spend some time fighting those Berserkers near here now you have two party members, and just keep healing up at the fountain. In fact, this is advisable, and at least get both to level 4. Head left from in front of the healing building and you can edge through the trees to a pool. Skirt around the right side of the pool to find a hidden [MYTHRIL HELM] next to the tree at the north side of the first patch of sandy ground. There's also a hidden [STAFF] at the middle of the north edge of the second sandy area. Turn right from this position, and you can walk between the yellow/green and darker green trees. Go right, up, and left into a little clearing amidst the trees You'll find another hidden item [ZEUS'S WRATH] at the north side under a single tree. This is a consumable item that casts lightning magic on enemies. There's nothing to find in the sandy patch of the ground between the rocks so return to the town. (And you won't be allowed to pinch to zoom in anyway, which is a good hint when there isn't anything.) The shops are not open for business and the inn has no resting place, but go inside anyway. Chat to all the ghosts in here to discover more about why the town was cursed and get a hint about the smith's daughter from the ghost upstairs. You'll find a familiar Final Fantasy name even though you cannot see him: the ghost in front of the counter is Cid. Being nice boys you decide you'd better help these people, and Cid lends you his airship. (If only life was that simple!) Cid explains that all you have to do is tap the airship to get on or off. At least that part of it IS simple. Go behind the inn counter and zoom in on the shelves to find a hidden [POTION]. The smithy is behind the Inn, and there's a sparkle on the pot at the left of the furnace, which nets you a [POTION]. YOu can speak to the smith, Takka, but it won't get you any further beyond a little extra information about his daughter. Leave town and save your game again on the world map. Check equipment and health before entering the mines at the back of the town if you intend to explore in there, but it's not advisable! If you decide to ignore that warning be VERY careful because a mummy and skeleton together can destroy you with their speed (having the first turn) and power (using critical attacks!).The mummy also uses poison on you. At level 3/4 you'll be dead unless you're very lucky, so take the hint and leave the mines for now! ----------- THE AIRSHIP ----------- Instead, head for the sandy patch of ground to the west of Kazus, as instructed by Cid, and you'll immediately discover the airship! Talk to the girl you find and the smith's daughter, **REFIA** joins the party and tells you where to go to find a Mythril Ring. She is also a Freelancer and joins you at level 3. Refia is equipped with a Knife, Leather Cap and Leather Armor. I gave her the Leather Shield and Longsword. By the way, if you're thinking what I was thinking, that you can enter the cave with a third party member, it won't work as Refia leaves the party if you return to the village. To get her back, just exit to the world map. As I said, leave the cave visit until later. Refia knows where you can get a Mythril Ring, at Sasune Castle, so that's your next destination. But first, check out the Formation command on the menu. Touch that command and then a party member to move their starting position in battle from the front to the back. If their picture is in the right side position, they will be on the back row and less vulnerable to damage, although their attacks will also be less damaging to enemies. =============================================================================== 04. CASTLE SASUNE ....................................................... *W04 =============================================================================== TASK : Talk to the king and explore the castle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : West from Kazus Services : Bed (Castle and East Tower) Items [6] : Phoenix Down, 1000 Gil x2, Leather Shield, Bronze Knuckles, Blizzard (Black Magic Lv.1) [5] East Tower: Holy Arrow x20, Wooden Arrow x40, Bow, Potion [3] West Tower: Holy Arrow x20, Wooden Arrow x20, Wightslayer Wellspring : Yes. Bed rest restores HP and MP Recruit : Ingus Enemies : 008: Red Wisp, 009: Dark Eye, 010: Zombie ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To fly the airship simply walk onto the platform with the helm and touch the ! mark. To land, touch the airship, and to fly again, touch it again. Note that you can access the full menu from the airship, including the save feature. Use the shadow cast by the airship to judge where to land. You cannot go far since the airship cannot cross over the mountains and it cannot land on trees, but you CAN cross the lake to the northwest and enter a cavern there called the SEALED CAVE. However, it's best to follow the route of the story and visit Castle Sasune first, where you'll obtain lots more treasure and another recruit. Fly west, crossing over the forest, and land outside the large grey castle. Save your game before going inside. You'll find someone waiting for you. After a short chat the doors will be opened. Go through the wooden doors ahead, and KEEP GOING up the stairs to the top floor. Eventually you'll be in a large chamber with a red carpet and you'll discover that the king isn't quite his normal self, and it seems that the king doesn't have the Mythril ring. Next stop, the cave to the north to find his missing daughter, Sara, and the soldier you met, named **INGUS** joins the party. The king tells you to search for the skeleton key and that there's a secret passage inside the sealed cave. Ingus joins as a Freelancer at Level 4 (even if the rest of the group are still at Level 3) with exactly the same equipment at the rest had: a Knife, Leather Cap and Leather Armour. Since he's stronger than the rest, put him on the front row and give him better weapons. Return to the ground floor where you can rest in the beds at the left and chat to more ghosts. Time for a little looting! Enter the door ahead again and turn left to find a hidden opening through the left wall. You can recognise it by the darker hue on top of the dividing wall. Walk up to find a chest with a [PHOENIX DOWN]. Return to the hall and there's a similar hidden passage through the opposite right wall. There are two sets of steps out of this side room. Walk down the lower stairs into a small room with two chests containing [1000 GIL] and [1000 GIL]. The steps down from here just lead to a large empty space with a pool and no treasure, so go up the second set of stairs to the second floor. Walk left, to find two more chests. These contain a [LEATHER SHIELD] and [BLIZZARD] Level 1 Black Magic. Look closely at the top of the wall to the left of these two chests and you'll spot a discoloured area indicating another hidden passage. Follow this passage in the darkness, up and right, into a small room with a treasure chest containing [BRONZE KNUCKLES], another weapon. Leave the main building. ---------- EAST TOWER (no enemies) ---------- Walk up the right side of the central keep and enter the tower. Climb to the third floor to find two treasure chests, with [HOLY ARROW x20] and [WOODEN ARROW x20] Lady Sara's bedroom is on the next floor and you can rest in her bed... Open the three chests to obtain: [BOW], [WOODEN ARROW x20] and [POTION]. After obtaining all this loot, leave the castle and save your game on the world map before entering the west tower. Adjust everyone's equipment and equip that new magic too. Give the Bow to a back row fighter and equip the Wooden Arrows in their second hand. This frees up weapons so everyone can have the best you've got! Leave the castle to save your game if you are in any doubt about your capacity to deal with some much stronger monsters in the West Tower. ---------- WEST TOWER ---------- The encounter rate is quite high in here so keep an eye on health and don't let anyone's HP get too low. As well as the familiar Wisp and Dark Eye monsters you'll also encounter Zombies. You can use potions and the Cure spell on these undead enemies to damage them by 50 HP, or the Holy Arrows you found, but I'd suggest hanging onto those as you can defeat them fairly easily with ordinary weapons. To use the Cure spell, just tap the enemy to target them, as they won't appear on the list of recipients. A lot depends on your current level. If everyone is at level 3 to start with then it's harder but you'll soon level up. These enemies can inflict poison status and you'll need Antidotes or use the spell Poisona, especially since Poison status persists after a battle. Maybe keep one person on the back row and use them for healing: give them the Bow and fire arrows when they don't need to heal anyone. Remember to equip the arrows as well as the bow! Climb to the third floor to find two treasure chests with [HOLY ARROW x20] in the left one and [WOODEN ARROW x20] in the right. There's another chest on the next floor, but make sure everyone is at full health before opening it. You'll find a [WIGHTSLAYER] weapon but it's a trap! Without doing any extra fighting but not running away from battles my team were all at level 5 by this point. Before opening the chest check that all the new stuff has been equipped and that you have potions at the ready. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - GRIFFON | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 06 | 230 | 15 | 16 | 130 | 40 | Wind | Sasune: West Tower | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Potion 2 - Bomb Fragment 3 - Antarctic Wind 4 - Zeus's Wrath| | 5 - Silence Seal 6 - Tranquilizer 7 - Angel's Sigh 8 - Angel's Sigh| |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 5 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o The first thing to do is go to the Equipment page and change one of Luneth's weapons for the Wightslayer as it's very much stronger than anything else. You can do a lot of damage with your double equipped weapons and the Griffon can only hit one person at once. However, its critical attack can take away half someone's HP so you'll need to heal that damage. It also has a Fire magic attack on everyone that does around 15-20 damage, or around 45 HP damage to one so don't take any chances with health. You can get a quick win by using the item Antarctic Wind, which overkills causing more than 200 HP damage to the monster but it's best to hold on to this valuable item for the next boss battle. However, the Blizzard magic works well, causing around 50+ HP harm to the enemy. The new Wightslayer's better attack power should be inflicting around 50-60 damage on each turn, and it will only take five strikes (with double weapons) to defeat it. The experience is divided between everyone so each person gets 32 points. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o After defeating the boss the encounter rate seems to dip and one time I left the tower with no more encounters, but that might be a rare fluke. After getting all the treasure and healing up again, leave the castle and fly east and north, across the lake, to the Sealed Cave. =============================================================================== 05. SEALED CAVE ......................................................... *W05 =============================================================================== TASK : Defeat the Djinn and choose jobs for everyone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Northeast from Castle Sasune, across the lake. Items [4] : Potion, Cure (White Magic Lv.1), 500 Gil, Antarctic Wind, Eye Drops. Wellspring : No Ally : Princess Sara Enemies : 08: Red Wisp, 09: Dark Eye, 10: Zombie, 11: Mummy, 12: Skeleton, 13: Cursed Copper, 14: Larva, 15: Shadow, 16: Revenant ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Skeleton, Revenant and Cursed Copper enemies are susceptible to Cure magic and holy arrows, but you'll kill them quickly just with weapons. To target an enemy or ally group with a spell tap the ALL command at the top right of screen. You can also use healing spells on all party members from the Magic menu when not in a battle, by selecting the option to do so! Skeletons can cause blindness and you'll need eye drops to cure that status effect, and Revenants use poison attacks and the Mummy might cause confusion. It's as well to stock up now on some status items to avoid using precious MP. You enter from the north, so walk straight down the cave until you reach a dead end and a treasure chest that contains a [POTION]. From here, walk back to the junction and turn right. In the next larger cave walk up to find the second chest that contain [CURE] Lv 1 White Magic. Head back down the cave and continue along the only route heading south, (through a screen change) until you reach another large cave. There's a chest in the bottom left corner with [500 GIL]. This cave appears to be a dead end but head to the right and use the zoom function close up on the skull that's lying on the floor of the cave. You'll spot the sparkle and a ! mark. Touch this to activate a switch, opening the wall in the cave. Follow the path and you'll find Princess Sara who joins the party together with her Mythril Ring, although you cannot use her as an active party member. Tap on the word balloon, which appears under the word, Menu, to speak to her. She'll let you know that the Djinn is susceptible to cold attacks. This is what you've been waiting for! Equip the Blizzard magic to someone if you haven't done so yet, and be ready to use an Antarctic Wind item. Don't bother healing with potions now that Sara is with you because she'll automatically heal anyone who is injured (her Cure spell works on everyone at once) as well as sometimes using Aero magic to attack enemies. Continue walking to the right and then down the steps to the next cave. You'll find new Larva and Revenant enemies besides the skeletons. Go left, and then down a narrow passage. Follow this path as it turns to the right and then down again to a dead end, where you'll discover a treasure chest with the item you need, an {ANTARCTIC WIND]. Walk back to the junction and go straight ahead, and then left, into a cavern. There's a chest at the lower left corner with [EYE DROPS]. The tunnel continues from the left side of this cave and you'll probably find the Shadow enemy here that's very susceptible to Holy (light) magic. Might as well give those Holy Arrows some play time! There is nothing left to find so just run quickly down the passage into another large cavern and then, right, into the final area where a blue Djinn awaits on a red platform. Check everyone's health and status before approaching the platform: I hadn't noticed that Arc was blind so needed to use Eye Drops on him. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - DJINN | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 07 | 600 | 20 | 8 | 200 | 1400 | Ice, Water | Sealed Cave | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Potion 2 - Bomb Fragment 3 - Bomb Fragment 4 - Sheep Pillow| | 5 - Sheep Pillow 6 - Lamia Scale 7 - Bomb Arm 8 - Bomb Arm | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 7/8 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o The main risk with this guy is that he'll swing his sword twice at the same person and that can nearly kill them. He might also do a powerful critical attack on one, and that too, can nearly kill them. His third skill is Fire magic on one or all. To avoid disaster use Blizzard magic and the Antarctic Wind item because he has a lot of HP. One of these items and one magic attack, which will do over 100 HP damage with the caster at level 7, together with one round of physical attacks should suffice. (Or use two Antarctic Winds for a faster and less risky win!) Equip Shields to give extra protection from his fierce attacks. Everyone will get 50 experience points as well as a goodly amount of Gil and you might be lucky and get an item from him. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o After the battle Sara does his stuff on the Djinn and the rest of the team end up somewhere else. It's the cave with the crystal from the start of the game. Now the four of you get a message which you cannot skip over... just keep tapping the screen. Then, watch the credits, with that really excellent plaintive yet triumphal music, and that's the end of the prologue chapter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CRYSTAL OF WIND - JOBS CHANGE, MOGNET ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Moogle appears at this point to tell you about changing jobs. We'll get to that in a bit, but first of all walk up the steps, edging past the blue crystal. Step into the circle to return to the surface outside the Altar Cave with everyone at full health again. Save your game and make decisions about your future! Check the menu screen and you'll notice that the JOB option is now available. (In between Status and Quicksave.) Select this option and a characters to view the list of possible jobs: WARRIOR - best on the front row unless equipped with a bow. MONK - front row: no magic and needs to be close to enemies to do the maximum damage. WHITE MAGE - back row: use Staffs as items in battle to cast Black magic. BLACK MAGE - back row: same as White Mage. Staffs save on MP use. RED MAGE - front or back: versatile with weapons and magic. THIEF - front row: to steal stuff and get the first turn, but won't damage enemies if stealing. If you check the stats of all party members without any equipment before allocating jobs, you'll see that the ONLY difference between them is HP. At Level 8 these are the numbers (which are slightly different from the DS version of the game). * Luneth has 114 HP * Arc has 112 HP * Refia has 115 HP * Ingus has 120 HP This means that it really doesn't matter who takes on which job. A lot depends on how you prefer to play: you could make a party solely of fighters (Warrior and Monk) or mages. But it's probably best to opt for a balanced party. I always like stealing stuff and the thief unlocks doors for you. Mages are handy for their attack magic to target groups of enemies. Since healing is easy enough with items, beds and wellsprings you might not want to bother with a White Mage, but having access to White magic is going to be useful for attacking undead enemies as well healing and so it's advisable. An alternative is to use a Red Mage for their magic versatility and ability to equip a wide range of stuff. Bear in mind that these jobs will be superseded when you find the next crystal and you'll probably want to change them again. In this game I went with Luneth-Monk, Arc-Red Mage, Refia-White Mage, Ingus-Thief. You'll need to adjust equipment to suit each job and change around magic as well. Remember that White Mages cannot use Black Magic, a Thief cannot use swords and you won't be able to use magic with a Monk, Warrior or Thief. By the way, if you're not sure about jobs, try out the Red Mage. When you get the next set of jobs most of them will only require 2 battles for transition from this job. Also, the fact that the Red Mage is an all-rounder gives you a taste of warrior type fighting and white and black magic They won't require job change when you're in mini form which also makes them useful. However, don't stick with the Red Mage for the rest of the game, as their lack of specialist abilities makes them less valuable as the game progresses. Remember that you can always retain the Freelancer Job if you want an all-rounder. ------ MOGNET ------ Walk the few steps south to Ur and go up to the magic shop and left. You'll find a Moogle waiting for you. Talk to him access the Mognet post office and mail delivery system. You'll find a letter waiting from Topapa entitled: - How Are You? -.This version of the game does NOT include the online Friends message system, which you'll be relieved to hear if you've played the DS version. ------------- SASUNE CASTLE ------------- Your airship is still outside the Sealed Mines where you left it, which is a bit annoying as you cannot reach it at the moment. If you return to Kasus nothing happens and Refia leaves the party saying she's not yet ready to meet her father. You must return to Sasune Castle first, and yes, you've got to walk all the way there, but it gives you a chance to fight enough battles to instigate the change of jobs. You'll be able to use the job's skills right from the start, but the stats don't change and appear in yellow. Thief requires 4 battles for the adjustment phase and the rest only need 2 so it won't take long for the change to take place. Princess Sara is waiting for you and events proceed in an orderly fashion. You receive the best present possible from the King: a [FOLDING CANOE] which is found in the Key Items part of the Items inventory Chat to everyone in the castle for a little extra information and climb the East Tower again to meet Sara once more if you wish to see a sweetly touching scene. Leave the castle and walk to the lake, where you don't even have to select the canoe as it magically appears as soon as you touch the water. Fly the airship back to Kazus. =============================================================================== 06. Report back to Cid in the inn and he'll join the party instead, although not as a fully active member. He will randomly join in the battle though, just as Sara did. Talk to the man near the first table for a hint about a secret passage inside the Mythril Mines. You can rest in the beds upstairs if you need to heal. Tap the speech bubble to talk to Cid for more hints about what to do next. Visit Takka the smith again, inside the Smithy behind the Inn. He'll fix up the airship so you can ram through the rocks and reach Cid's hometown. After this scene Refia will have disappeared from the smithy. Head for the airship and take off and that will prompt a scene, Refia will be back with the team. Now you are at full strength again, it's a good time to head for the mines at the back of Kasus. Cid will also help out, using Fire magic or just whacking an enemy with his hammer. ------------- MYTHRIL MINES ------------- Return to Kazus, buy anything extra for Refia, and walk to the back of the town behind the Smithy, to find the mine. From the entrance, walk right, and up the old mine track that leads into a larger cave. Remember what you were told by the man in the inn, and zoom in on the upper left corner of the cave where you see a lantern post. You'll see a sparkle, and touching the ! mark will open the secret passage in the left wall. After that it's a one way route down, left, and up to the far end where you'll find two treasure chests containing: [MYTHRIL SWORD] and [MYTHRIL SWORD]. Equip them or sell them. Heal up for free at the Wellspring before leaving town and ensure that you've bought the black magic spells as you'll need these pretty soon, even if you are not using a Mage at the moment. =============================================================================== 07. CANAAN .............................................................. *W07 =============================================================================== TASK : Blast the rock and walk to Canaan. Cure Cid's wife, find treasure and talk to Selina. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Southwest from Kasus, after blasting the rock to the west. Services : Item Shop, Inn (40 Gil), Bar, Weapon Shop, Armour Shop, Magic Shop Items [15] : Elixir, Gnomish Bread x2, Gold Needle, Potion, Great Bow, Iron Arrow x20, Blind (Black Magic Lv.2), 2000 Gil, 2000 Gil, Phoenix Down x3, Mallet, Gold Needle Wellspring : Yes, but nothing happens if you're alive. It revives the dead. Area Enemies: 05: Killer Bee, 07: Berserker, 21: Basilisk, 22: Bugbear ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALERT! DO NOT BUY THE GREAT BOW OR BLIND MAGIC. Back in the airship, fly towards the large rock at the southwest of the world map and you'll blast it automatically, but you also lose the airship and are now on foot again. Walk south east to find the small settlement of Canaan next to a mountain. Enter the town and Cid leaves the party, after telling you to see King Argus if you want a better airship. Cid makes the hull but the king knows about engines. The chap near the fountain informs you about a secret gnome village somewhere in the woods to the south, but there's a mountain in the way! The man at the left has information about a magical healing solution that's hidden somewhere in the town. Intriguing! The mage type man in orange adds to the intrigue by telling you about a Mini scroll that changes you to the size of a gnome, so that's the secret! Talk to the pink clothed girl in front of the magic shop and she'll dance for you. An old woman near the waterfall tells you about the useful qualities of Aero wind magic. Walk up to the north of the village using the steps at the right of the magic shop, and you'll find a pond. Walk around to the far side and down the steps into the water. Go left and follow the stream all the way down, under three bridges, until you reach some steps up to a patch of turf with a treasure chest. This contains a rare and valuable [ELIXIR] that fully restores both HP and MP. Save this for when you really really need it, which will be sooner than you might expect. Return the way you came. Make your way to the house at the upper left of the town behind the equipment shop. The man at the left explains how to move items around by holding down on the item and sliding it over to the new position. The woman mentions the name of Desch, someone you'll meet up with soon enough. Enter the house to find Cid and his sick wife. Talk to his wife (you'll have to approach her from the end of the bed to get the ! mark) and you'll be able to cure her with the Elixir. It might seem a bit of a waste of a valuable item just to get rid of a cough, but one good turn always deserves another in an RPG, if not in life. Zoom in on the light on the wall next to the bed, as instructed by Cid and it opens a secret passage in the left wall. Go down the stairs into the aircraft hangar where you'll find EIGHT treasure chests!. Starting from left to right on the bottom row you'll acquire: [GNOMISH BREAD], [GNOMISH BREAD], [GOLD NEEDLE], [PHOENIX DOWN]. And on the top row: [POTION], [GREAT BOW], [IRON ARROW x20], [BLIND]. A very nice haul, but we're not done yet! Walk down the steps at the left, into the water, and go right, through the water, to climb the steps in the lower right corner of the room where you'll spot a dark patch on the stone floor. Go right, through a secret opening into darkness. Keep going right and you end up in another room with four more treasure chests. The lower two contain [2000 GIL] and another [2000 GIL], and the upper two net you a [PHOENIX DOWN] and another [PHOENIX DOWN]. ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Potion | 50 | Restores 50 HP. The item shop is inside the inn as usual. Check out the house adjoining the Inn (at the left of the fountain near the entrance of the town) and you'll find Salina, lying on her bed and mourning the lost Desch. He's someone we're going to have to find I guess, especially as he bought the last Mini scroll. She tells you that he went to the mountains to the east so that's the next task set up. Before leaving the house check out the logs at the left of the sink to find a [MALLET] Go left, hugging the lower wall below the bookshelf so you're out of sight, and you'll find a hidden opening in the left wall of the room. It just takes you back into the central hall where you'll find a [GOLD NEEDLE] hidden in the visible wood pile behind Selina's bed. Stay at the inn to heal everyone if required and leave town. Save your game and head for the hills! =============================================================================== 08. DRAGON'S PEAK ....................................................... *W08 =============================================================================== TASK : Reach the top of the mountain. Obtain Mini magic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : East of Canaan Items [4] : Phoenix Down, Aero (White Magic Lv.2), Gold Needle, Mini( White Magic Lv.2) [3] : Wellspring - Mini (x3 - maximum) Wellspring : Yes. Revive, HP/MP restoration, status cure (On world map) Enemies : 17: Firefly, 18: Helldiver, 19: Rust Bird, 20: Rukh Ally : Desch Recommended Level: 9 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walk up the track and you'll encounter bird type enemies. Unfortunately you don't yet have any Aero magic to which they are vulnerable, but use your other magic if you've a mage or your best physical attacks. The Helldivers and Rukhs are a real nuisance with their instant petrification attack that you can only cure with the Gold Needle item. Also, you cannot heal HP if that character is stoned. However, search out the Rust Bird and steal from it because every item you can pinch is a Phoneix Down and this is the ONLY enemy in the whole game that allows this. (You will be able to return to this location later in the game if you don't want to spend too much here now.) Firefly enemies are easy enough to kill with the Blizzard spell. Be very careful and keep everyone at full health as the enemies can inflict heavy damage Follow the linear path up and to the right. When you reach a junction at the east rock wall, head down the slope to find a treasure chest containing a [PHOENIX DOWN]. Back up the slope you'll arrive at a T junction. Go right and follow this path up and to the left and you'll soon find a second treasure chest with the magic you need: [AERO]. This is Level 2 White magic so a White Mage can be useful at long last. Return to the junction and walk left to find another chest at the edge of the path. That contains a [GOLD NEEDLE]. As soon as you reach the top of the path a scene will start, and you find yourself surrounded by a clutch of eggs and dragons. Speak to Desch, the figure in blue at the upper left and... you'll end up facing Bahamut. It's NOT a good plan to fight this beast now, so select to Run Away for everyone. If you have a Thief that's easier to do as they have the Flee option on their battle menu. But even so, it's likely that the dragon gets in a strike before you manage it. They will do over 700 HP of damage and it's an instant kill, so at least you're in no doubt that this is a battle you couldn't win. --------------------------- WORLD MAP AND HEALING COPSE --------------------------- Desch hands over the scroll [MINI], which is Level 2 White Magic, and decides to tag along with the party. He jumps off the mountain and the team follow, after which you all arrive at a new location on the world map. Don't worry if someone is dead and don't waste a Phoenix Down on them. Walk south a few steps and you'll enter a forest and a new location: a special healing place. Talk to the tiny gnome wandering around on the sandy ground to learn about the village to the south. These ponds heal, revive and cure bad status effects: left is the revival one, right is the status and the middle pond restores HP and MP. Check out your new Mini magic out and equip it to someone who can use it (a White Mage or Red Mage) and then use it from the magic menu on the lead character to talk to the Gnome. He'll give you another [MINI] spell so long as you've equipped the one you've got. In fact, if you equip this one and talk to him again he'll give you another! I got one for everyone as you can equip magic even if that job won't allow you to use it. Sadly the selling price is only 1 Gil so you won't make any cash from the gnome's generosity. Use the speech bubble to talk to Desch until he explains that weapons won't do any damage when you're in mini form. Only magic is effective so you'll need to change to jobs that use spells, and ensure that anyone in mini form is protected in the back row. Desch will be with you for a while and he uses a physical attack on enemies and Thundara magic, although he didn't use this magic until after the Viking Cove. Now, the task is to find the gnome village but it's no use with just one person in mini form: everyone needs to be small. BUT if they are, you'll soon get killed since strength, vitality, attack and defence drop to 1 point. The trick is to change fighter jobs to mages. Red Mage is probably the most useful for the Warrior as it only requires 2 battles for the changeover, and Black Mage for the Thief or Monk. Adjust equipment and magic spells accordingly and make sure to heal up everyone to give them all MP to use for those spells! Put everyone on the back row by using the Formation command on the menu and touching each character in turn to move their position to the right. Fight a few battles on the world map to complete the change. You'll see a black arrow pointing down next to the character's portrait when they change jobs and it disappears when they've learned the job. Return to the healing copse to heal everyone and then, use the Mini spell, and you should manage the local enemies even though everyone is tiny. (Desch will join in and his Thundara magic is powerful enough to take out all enemies around here.) However, there's a less bothersome method. Simply find the location of the village and THEN make mini-mes of everyone. Local enemies include the Basilisk, Bugbear and Mandrake. Ok, so walk south from the healing springs, past the first section of forest and hug the western mountain range. When you reach the southwest section of forest, change everyone into Mini. Just go to Magic, select the spell and then the option at the bottom of the page: "All Party Members". If you've done it correctly even Desch will change size, and you'll be inside the mini world of Tozus. (If you did as I did and used the Mini spell on just one person to start with, you'll find that the all person spell changes them BACK into their big form.) =============================================================================== 09. TOZUS TOWN AND TUNNEL ............................................... *W09 =============================================================================== TASK : Heal the doctor. Use the tunnel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : In the forest to the south of the Healing forest area. There's also a map on the top screen although it just shows the location on the world map. Talk to the gnomes you meet and you'll find out about a tunnel that takes you to the home of the Vikings... not quite what you might expect. Another gnome mentions the Living Woods and Doctor Shelco is ill. You'll also find a Moogle who will have a new letter from Topapa for you to read, simply entitled: -Ur- . Yes, Chocobos are in this game! The inn costs 80 Gil to stay but you shouldn't need that if you came straight from the healing forest. The really useful stuff is sold at the Magic Shop and you can stock up on spells for your newly created mages. Fire and Blizzard will probably suffice. The specialist gnome bread shop is worth a visit and it's found by walking down from left of the Moogle. Buy a couple or more of these items that allow you to see the whole continent at once. This has the same effect as using the spell Sight, which you don't yet have. ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- GNOME ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Gnomish Bread | 200 | Shows a detailed map ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Potion | 50 | Restores 50 HP. Use zoom to see the sparkles that reveal a hidden [MYTHRIL BRACERS] on the table opposite the entrance door and a [FIRE STAFF] inside the left bookcase. The right bookcase yields a [FIRA] magic. Talk to the doctor and heal him with an Antidote item. As with Cid and his house, this one also has a secret and he'll reveal it to you by opening a passage that leads to Miralka Bash. Check out the pots in the corner of the room, to the left of the secret passage, and you'll find a hidden [CURA}, Level 3 White Magic. Walk along the passage and down the stairs to access two treasure chests with [PHOENIX DOWN] and [PHOENIX DOWN]. Leave, and head back to village to do some shopping before continuing along the tunnel. Return to the world map to save your game and check everyone's health and equipment. Stay at the inn or walk back to the healing forest to heal for free! Enter the Tozus Tunnel. My team were now a Red Mage, two Black Mages and a White Mage and everyone was at level 9 or 10. ------------ TOZUS TUNNEL ------------ Simple stuff here. Walk left, and then up, into the second part of the tunnel, and continue to the end where you emerge on the world map. There's nothing to find. Fight some monsters as you go, but the encounter rate is low and I only had two battles so it's easy enough to manage. Watch out for the Dark Face's Blizzard spell and critical physical attack, and keep everyone placed on the back row to minimise the damage. I only found the Leprechauns on a subsequent visit if you are determined to account for all enemies, but that's probably because I didn't linger on this first trip. You'll emerge in a grassy area surrounded with mountains, and you can return through the tunnel from the forest here, so long as you're mini size. The Vikings' Cove is inside the mountain to the north. Change back to normal size by casting the Mini spell on everyone again and hope you have the magic ability left to use a level 2 spell. If not, don't worry, as the Vikings' Cove has an inn. Retain the magic jobs as you'll soon have to revert to mini size again. =============================================================================== 10. VIKINGS' COVE ....................................................... *W10 =============================================================================== TASK : Find all treasure. Find out about the ship and dragon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Inside the mountain to the north of the end of the tunnel from Tozus. Services : Item Shop, Inn (40 Gil), Magic Shop Items [6] : Spark Dagger, Viking Axe, 3000 Gil, Blizzara (Black Magic Lv.3), Thundara (Black Magic Lv.3), Fira (Black Magic Lv.3) Wellspring : Yes. Revive only Ally : Desch Area Enemies: 5: Killer Bee, 06: Werewolf, 07: Berserker, 21: Basilisk, 22: Bugbear, 23: Mandrake ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, it's very easy to simply race through the cave, chat a little to hear about the ship and the sea dragon, emerge onto the world map again and board the ship, only to find yourself fighting the dragon before you've even had time to pause. This is the Nepto Dragon and you cannot beat it. Your spells will do 0 damage and it has two attacks on each turn and each attack kills someone with around 5000 damage. Kind of not possible... Well, then, DON'T! This cove is really a town and you can talk to the Vikings and search for some useful items. Walk through to the first open area where a Viking is asleep on a bed at the left and the chap wandering around greets you in a cheery fashion and warns you about the sea dragon. You'll see a dark wall at the right and a small cave with a red treasure chest below the wall. There's a hidden opening out of sight in the upper side of that dark section. Turn down, facing the treasure chest and you'll find it. Walk down, right and down again to access the chest which contains a [SPARK DAGGER]. Back in the main cave walk up and chat to the group, one of whom mentions the Nepto Temple. Enter the doorway behind them to find the shopping cave. The mage standing at the back wall sells magic, although you don't need any as you'll find some free stuff in here. However, you should buy a few of the new Maiden's Kiss items. Rest at the inn before leaving. ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Potion | 50 | Restores 50 HP. Go left, to the far end of the path and turn down the screen. You'll discover another hidden passage leading through to a room at the west of the area. Talking to the Viking reveals the name of Pop again. Go down the steps to find another talkative chap and two treasure chests. The top one contains a [VIKING AXE] and the lower one has a whopping [3000 GIL]! They don't object to strangers stealing all their goods. There's a wellspring to the right of the cave that will revive the dead. Return to the main path and go right to find a Moogle. Stop just before that, where some light shines on the path, and turn down the screen again to find a hidden passage through the darkness. Walk down, right, down again, and left, into a small room with three treasure chests: The left one has [BLIZZARA] magic, the middle one contains [FIRA] and the right has [THUNDARA] and these are all Level 3 spells. Back on the path, walk right, and down the steps to find Pop and a few other Vikings. The deal is: defeat the dragon and you can have the Enterprise sailing ship. Chat to the other Viking who tells you the truth about dragon: as soon as you enter the ship he will attack. Back on the path, you can fire the cannon, for fun and get a bit more information from two more Vikings. Walk up and the stairs ahead take you back to the world map, between two mountains. The ship looks tempting, just waiting on the shore to the west, but heed the warning and avoid it. Instead, walk north along the shore, and then west, to find a stone temple. Before entering save your game, and retain the magic jobs as you'll have to change back to mini form inside the temple. =============================================================================== 11. NEPTO TEMPLE ........................................................ *W11 =============================================================================== TASK : Acquire Nepto's Eye and made the dragon whole again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : West from Vikings' Cove. Items [3] : Shell Armor, Shell Helm, Serpent Sword [3] : (Key Items) Nepto Eye, Fang of Water, Enterprise Wellspring : No Ally : Desch Enemies : 26: Petit, 27: Poison Bat, 28: Liliputian, 29: Wererat, 30: Blood Worm Recommended Level: 10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enter the temple and walk up to investigate the dragon head statue. There's nothing else to find inside this first room. Use Mini on everyone, as instructed, and enter the dragon's mouth. Use Level 1 magic on the enemies you meet, and you might find that Desch helps you out with his Thundara magic. Walk quite a distance to the right, across a bridge, and eventually the path turns up and to a dead end. However, there are two holes in the floor. Drop down the first one (actually there are stairs, although you cannot see them from above) and head down to the lower left corner of the room. There are two chests here: the left one has [SHELL ARMOR] and the right contains a [SHELL HELM]. These can be equipped to a Red Mage, which is another good reason for having one with you at this stage. Return to the upper level and enter the second hole. Walk right to find a treasure chest with a [SERPENT SWORD] and another hole in the floor. This takes you into a rock walled cavern. Walk right, and you'll probably encounter the large red blood worm in here. One or two Fire spells should kill it. You'll see something purple at the end of the passage so make sure that everyone has full HP before approaching it. And yes, you have to fight a boss in mini form! o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - GIANT RAT | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 11 | 900 | 24 | 29 | 1200 | 1500 | None | Nepto Temple | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Potion 2 - Bomb Fragment 3 - Antarctic Wind 4 - Zeus's Wrath | | 5 - Silence Seal 6 - Tranquilizer 7 - Angel's Sigh 8 - Angel's Sigh | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 10/11 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Use your highest level spells on the rat: Thundara, Fira and Blizzara. Thundara seems to be the best, doing nearly 350 HP damage to the rat. Level 1 spells and Aero only inflict around 70 damage to him. The Rat will get two turns on each round and it might hit out twice inflicting poison, or use ice magic on everyone. The main problem is that the rat might cast a spell on one character which will kill them outright at this level. Revive with a Phoenix Down if they are your best magic user or if you want them to receive experience points. I managed this in two rounds, with 1 Thundara and 1 Thunder magic, with the rest of the team using level 1 spells. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o After the battle you'll pick up [NEPTO EYE], a key item, and everyone will be at full health for the return journey to the statue. Just as well, as the enemies are still up for a fight. Keep walking left, using the stairs, to get back to the entrance room. Examine the statue and you'll put the missing eye back in its socket. You obtain the [FANG OF WATER] from the grateful dragon. Leave the temple and restore everyone to full size on the world map. You cannot use the ship as it's no longer on the shore. But return to the Viking Cove and walk straight down the stairs to talk to Pop again. You'll officially receive the [ENTERPRISE]! Leave the cave again, from the north exit and the ship is now waiting on the shore. Embark on your seafaring adventures! Change jobs back to what you had before if you wish, but I'd recommend having a Black Mage now you have lots of lovely Level 3 magic, and the fact they can use a bow from the back row makes them really useful. You'll also need a Thief to open some locked doors if you want to acquire some nice treasure early on. =============================================================================== 12. THE ENTERPRISE ...................................................... *W12 =============================================================================== TASK : Explore the world! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ally : Desch Sea Enemies : 31: Killer Fish, 32: Hermit, 33: Sea Elemental, 34: Tangie, 35: Sahagin ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After boarding the ship near the Vikings' Cove, sail west, and you'll end up in the middle of the sea in the middle of the continent. Check the map to see your location. Use one of the Gnomish Breads now, and you'll be able to spot new locations that you haven't yet visited. It's not clear where you should go next but identifying all the locations on the world map is a good start. You'll notice that the ship is restricted to the inner sea, and that access to the outer circular sea is blocked by a whirlpool to the north. Have fun exploring and finding new enemies to fight, both at sea and on the land. You can save at any time while sailing or riding a Chocobo. You can land anywhere and don't need a jetty or harbour as in some RPGs. The old locations are to the East and you can call back to Canaan to visit Selina, Desch's love, and chat to Cid, but you won't learn anything new. The new locations are dealt with in the walkthrough, but in brief they are: * Tokkul Village to the south. * Castle Argus to the northwest. * Tower of Owen to the north (west of the narrow channel with the whirlpool). * Gulgan Gulch to the west from Castle Argus * Village of the Ancients at the southwest perimeter of the map. One of the problems is that there isn't a revive wellspring, except in the Vikings Cove, and the new locations don't have an inn. I ended up having to return to Vikings' Cove to revive and save on Phoenix Downs, and to restore health. However, there is a Wellspring on the second floor of Castle Argus. See the next section for details of the castle and the treasure you can find there. =============================================================================== 13. CASTLE ARGUS ........................................................ *W13 =============================================================================== TASK : Obtain all the treasure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : On the northwest coast Services : None Items [12] : 1500 Gil, 1000 Gil x6, 100 Gil x2, Bomb Fragment, Arctic Wind, Antarctic Wind. [9] : {Locked Rooms} Light Arrow x20, Killer Bow, Medusa Arrow x20. Book Of Light, Book Of Fire, Ice Arrow x20, Fire Arrow x20, Book Of Ice, Scholar Robe Wellspring : Yes. Revive and HP/MP restoration Ally : Desch Area Enemies: 40: Knocker, 42: Lizardman, 43: Gorgon ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Remembering that King Argus knew about airship engines, this might be the natural next destination. You can see the castle on the Gnomish Bread map, situated on the northwest coast. Sail there and enter what turns out to be a completely deserted castle. (Touch the speech bubble for some comments about this: while the soldiers are out looting, we'll loot their castle!) There are some good things to find: tons of cash and a wellspring. You might need the latter in case of disaster as there are some more powerful sets of enemies to find, both on sea and on the world map. Stop in the room on the second floor and get close up and personal to the candlestick in the upper right corner. You'll see that familiar sparkle. Touch ! and the wall opens for you. Walk through the opening and keep going straight through the next small room to the adjoining one. I had difficulty finding the hole in the wall, until I realised it was situated by the fourth floor tile down from the candlestick. Here you'll find three chests: The left one has [1000 GIL], and so does the middle one [1000 GIL], and yeah, it's the mother lode, the third one has the same amount of [1000 GIL]. From the small room, walk up the stairs into a another treasure room with 6 chests. Starting at the lower left the left three contain: [1500 GIL], [1000 GIL], [1000 GIL]. The ones at the right have [100 GIL], [1000 GIL] and another [100 GIL]. The stairs take you out to the ramparts. Walk left or right, and up to find a small wooden door in both corners' These doors are locked but you can open them with a Thief. Change job and you'll be given the message that you can open the door. There's no awkward lock-picking involved, as the thief is the master of unlocking (even if you didn't name her Jill). The thief must be the lead character, so change them around from the menu if you need to. Select Formation and touch two characters to exchange positions. Inside the left door you'll find an office. Check out the large cupboard for that reassuring sparkle and touch the ! to open the wall to the room at the right. Open three treasure chests to obtain: [LIGHT ARROW x20], [KILLER BOW] and [MEDUSA ARROW x20]. The light arrows inflicts lightning damage and the medusa arrows cause gradual petrification. These are more powerful than you'll require right now, but having the Killer Bow is a real bonus as it adds another +8 attack power to the Great Bow. Enter the right door to discover a treasure room with six chests. Opening them from left to right, starting on the bottom row, these contain: [BOOK OF LIGHT], [BOOK OF FIRE], [ICE ARROW x20]. The top row yields: [FIRE ARROW x20], [BOOK OF ICE], and [SCHOLAR ROBE]. The Book weapons and robe cannot be equipped by anyone, and you'll need to wait until you have access to new jobs. Go back to the very first room with the candlestick and climb the stairs up to the large dining room. The enclosed walled area to the right of the table doesn't seem to have a doorway, but just go around the back and walk down the hidden stairs. You'll end up inside a small room with two treasure chests: the top one has a [BOMB FRAGMENT] and the lower one an [ANTARCTIC WIND]. Walk right, between the two chests, and you can pass through the wall into the darkness and through to a tiny room with a single chest containing an [ARCTIC WIND] item. Return to the dining room and walk down the central stairs below the table to reach the ramparts. Go right and find a wellspring that restores HP and MP, and there's also a revive one to the left. Leave the castle. ------------ LIVING WOODS ------------ You might remember that this place was mentioned by one of the gnomes, and it can only be reached with the Enterprise. Sail a short distance down the west coast from Castle Argus keeping close to the coastline, and you'll see a gap in the mountains. Land on the coast and walk a few steps into the wooded area. You'll find some tiny fairies and a missing Elder Tree. Talk to them to discover the secret of the Elder Tree and Hein. The Wizard Hein, of Castle Argus, has put a curse on the Elder Tree which is now wandering the desert. They also tell you that Hein changes his weak point when he uses Barrier Shift, and that you need to analyze him to see his current weak point. Useful stuff to remember for later. =============================================================================== 14. TOKKUL .............................................................. *W14 =============================================================================== TASK : Find the treasure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : On the central south shore of the sea. Services : None Items [7] : Bacchus's Cider, Great Bow, Lamia Scale, Ice Staff, Serpent Sword, Kenpo Gi, Sonic Knuckles Wellspring : No Ally : Desch Area Enemies: 37: Griffon, 40: Knocker 41: Flyer, 42: Lizardman, 43: Gorgon ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Start off by sailing south of the central sea, where there's a small settlement on the nearby coast. Walk from the coast to the village of Tokkul. This place is a bit strange: the first two inhabitants run off when you talk to them and some of the houses are shut up. If you've already been to Castle Argus there's some connection to the lack of soldiers there. However, none of this will stop you from finding stuff lying around the place. Talk to the Moogle at the left of the entrance to receive a new letter. This one's from Sara titled - Hello, Ingus - but you'll need to have Ingus as the leading character to get it! Walk left from the entrance until you stop at a blue roofed house. Now, head up between this house and the yellow roofed one at the right and use Zoom. The collection of pots or debris at the left of the yellow roofed house hides a [BACCHUS'S CIDER]. Walk up to the small house behind these two and check the wall at the left of the blocked door to find a [GREAT BOW]. Find a hidden [LAMIA SCALE] by the tree above this house. Go right from here to reach the house at the upper side of the village. You'll find a couple of blue clothed locals who will give you information about other locations: there's a demon in the Sands to the west and a Village of the Ancients to the west. Both sound promising. A man below the house with lots of windows tells you about Castle Argus and people who live in the western mountains. Walk a bit further to the right onto the grass at the east of the village. You'll find an [ICE STAFF] hidden in the grass just below the sandy upper right corner. Use Zoom to find the sparkle as usual. Enter the blue roofed Elder's house and talk to him to learn about the village's recent fate. The man in the small room at the right tells you to take the weapons they have, so do them a favour and do as he says. Investigate the fireplace and you'll end up inside a hidden room with two chests. The upper one contains a [SERPENT SWORD] and the lower one a [KENPO GI]. Check the middle of the pots with Zoom to discover a hidden [SONIC KNUCKLES]. Finally, enter the blue roofed house to the right of the entrance. A child will run off into fireplace, so follow her and talk to the mother to learn that the soldiers who raided the place were King Argus's men. I wonder where they might have disappeared to? This is a good point to use the speech icon to find out what the rest of the team think. =============================================================================== 15. CHOCOBO WOODS (Optional) ............................................ *W15 =============================================================================== TASK : Ride a Chocobo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Southwest from Tokkul, inside a circular forest. Services : Chocobo transport! Area Enemies: (World map outer ring) 36: Parademon, 37: Griffon, 38: Lynx, 39: Hornet, 40: Knocker, 44: Red Cap, 45: Barometz, 46: Slime, 47: Tarantula. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: The Slime is a rare green enemy, found at the northwestern perimeter. Thanks to Seferga for identifying this location as I had been searching for it for ages... Walk south from the Tokkul village and follow the edge of the coast until you can walk west If you cross the desert you'll see a strange whirling something, but it's not a monster although you cannot interact with it. The land narrows with water on both sides, but keep going and you'll spot a circle of forest surrounded with a circle of grass. Walk into the forest to find Chocobo Woods! Simply talk to a Chocobo and it's yours! You'll be back on the world map and can run all over the place without encountering enemies. There are many more hidden Chocobo Woods, but they all have the same function, to give you a fast, free, and enemy free ride. Chocobos have the same ability as the Folding Canoe, as they can cross the shallow rivers. This is quite a surprise as you can run all the way around the whole world map, only to discover that it appears to be floating in the sky....Be careful though, because you could find yourself without a Chocobo and far from safety. Touch the chocobo and you'll dismount and it runs off. Wait until you've spoken to a kid at the Ancient's Village before completing this circumambulation, as he'll give you a reward! If you keep going west, past the Chocobo woods, you'll end up at this village at the south western edge of the world. =============================================================================== 16. VILLAGE OF THE ANCIENTS (Optional) .................................. *W16 =============================================================================== TASK : Shopping and information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : West from the Chocobo Woods. At the southwest corner of the map. Services : Item Shop, Inn (120 Gil), Bar, Weapon Shop, Armour Shop, Magic Shop Items [2] : Serpent Sword, (Chocobo reward) Gnomish Bread Wellspring : Yes. Revive only. Ally : Desch Area Enemies: 37: Griffon, 40: Knocker, 41: Flyer, 42: Lizardman, 43: Gorgon ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Climb the first two sets of steps, where you'll find a Moogle, and walk left and around the corner to find a red haired kid tucked away just to the left of the third steps. Talk to him to get the challenge of riding a Chocobo all the way around the world. Continue along the left ledge to find a small house at the top left corner of the village. This is the weapon shop and if you've already purloined all the treasure chests inside Castle Argus there's not much to buy except for the Light Staff, unless you could use another Killer Bow. Don't bother with the other staffs as you'll find some more for free in the next location. The blue robed mage outside the shop declaims wise words about magic stuff, as do the rest of the mages. Back at the starting steps you'll find an Inn costing 120 Gil and an item shop. Stock up on Maiden's Kiss items because the Tower you'll go to next is full of toads, and buy a supply of Hi-Potions for emergencies. Walk right, behind the Inn and up the path a few steps where you'll see a tiny white flower at the left. Check this out with Zoom to discover a [SERPENT SWORD]. The steps at the left lead to another mage who explains the nature of the world, and the significance of the Tower of Owen. The house behind him contains a revive wellspring. Behind here is a magic shop and another chatty mage. Buy the Teleport magic if nothing else! This will save a lot of hassle allowing you to leave dungeons and castles instantly. Stock up on the more powerful Level 3 magic as well, especially if you're using two mages. Sight is cheap enough and allows you to view the whole map in the same way as using a Gnomish Bread. The armour shop is located at the top right corner of the village and the person outside here will tell you about the Chocobos. At long last you can upgrade the Mage's body protection with the Mage's Robe, but you'll find one for free at the next location. The Gi is for the Monk and the Flame Armor for the Warrior or Red Mage. There's nothing else to find, so, after improving your equipment, head for the Chocobo Woods and undertake the world tour! Simply pick a Chocobo and run all the way around the outer ring of the land. Don't stop or touch the Chocobo. Back at the village, drop off the Chocobo and talk to the boy, and he gives you a [GNOMISH BREAD] that you don't need. You can do the run again for another prize if you talk to him again. ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Potion | 50 | Restores 50 HP. Services : Moogle Items [4] : Toad (White Lv.2) x4, Mage Robe, Ice Staff, Fire Staff Wellspring : No Ally : Desch ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pick up a Chocobo and run to the desert outside Tokkul. If you go north, up the coast a short way, and then turn west between the mountains you'll end up at the coast and an apparently dead end, but the Chocobo can cross the shallow water of the river. (If you walk here, you can paddle the canoe over the shallows.) You can see a dark shape swimming in the lake to the east, although you cannot reach the area now. Check the map and you'll see that this is to the west of the Castle. Maybe there's another route? (Be careful as the Chocobo can get stuck if you pass beyond the waterfall, which is a bit annoying as you cannot get out of this area.) Instead, ride the Chocobo to where you left the Enterprise and sail up the west coastline. Land near the Castle and walk north to the end of the forested area. Turn to the west where there's a gap between the mountains. Walk to the west to find a forested area and another Chocobo Woods. Leave this for now and take the lower route, past that lake to a cave. There's a Moogle inside the entrance and a welcoming green robed person at the left. The poor things are blind but can see the future, as if that's any compensation for not being able to see to play video games. Cross over the bridge and chat to the rest of the doom-laden dudes before descending the stairs. You'll find a group of five of them in the next room and talking to the middle one prompts a scene. You're given the [TOAD] spell and told to enter the Tower of Owen. Equip the spell and talk to him again to get another one, and another and another. You might as well get as many as possible while you can in case you change jobs and it avoids having to change the magic as well. Walk down behind the group where some some stairs are just visible. In the darkness, go right, and then, down, and left to enter a small treasure room. Open the three treasure chests from top to bottom to acquire: [MAGE ROBE], [ICE STAFF] and [FIRE STAFF]. Use Teleport to leave the cave and walk up to the Chocobo Woods. Pick up a mount and ride east, north and east again to reach the Tower of the Owen. SAVE YOUR GAME! =============================================================================== 18. Make sure everyone is at full health and with the best equipment for their class before entering the tower. You need the Toad spell, as well as back up Maiden's Kiss items and a few Golden Needle items. Hi-Potions will aid as a back-up to a White Mage, or as a replacement for their Cure or Cura spells. My party was Thief, Black Mage, White Mage and Red Mage and I started out with everyone at level 14. The encounter rate is fairly high once you're inside the body of the building and the enemies are quite tough, with some powerful attacks. If you're using a Black Mage remember that you can use the bow and change the arrows during the battle, and a White Mage can use an elemental staff as an item from the menu to cast the appropriate spell. Try to restrict yourself to using Level 1 magic and save the more powerful spells for when you really need them. Level 12 is high enough to cope with this place if you're careful, but if you've explored the world even a little, you'll be around Level 14. The Far Darrig enemies use Thunder magic and Silence spells. One Ice Staff casting will put paid to one of them. Pugman uses Blizzard magic on everyone for not much damage, but the Petit Mage can do a horrendous amount of damage with double Blizzara magic if you meet two of them in a back attack!. They also inflict silence. At level 14 they killed two characters and forced me to use two Phoenix Downs or just start again. Use Fire magic on these critters and make free use of the Fire Staff to save on MP. Keep everyone fully healed at all times. Floor 1 On entering the watery tower, walk left, down, and right, along the middle path to a dead end. This triggers a scene with Desch suggesting that it's time to take a dip. What he means is: turn the party into toads! Use the Toad magic on the whole party from the Magic menu and walk towards the corner of the area where water is pouring down. Be very cautious as you might get into a battle and you cannot do anything while in Toad form. Run away! You'll enter a new area, and should cast Toad again to change back to human form. Walk down the path and you'll soon trigger a welcoming scene. Continue along the path, heading to the left, and up, to find the stairs up to the next level. Floors 2 and 3 On this floor walk down the narrow path and find a treasure chest to the right, containing [ECHO HERBS]. From here go left and up, to find the stairs. This next floor has no treasure and is simple to navigate: go right, down, and left.to find the stairs. Floor 4 You arrive at the right side of this floor and can see a treasure chest across the gap below you. Walk left for a brief scene, then down the narrow path, right and up the narrow path at the right of the room to reach the chest. This contains a [SPARK DAGGER]. (I equipped this to the Thief, giving him two Spark Daggers and making his attacks pretty powerful.) The stairs are at the top left of the floor. Floor 5 Once again you arrive at the right side of the floor and this is slightly more complicated. Walk all the way to the left for another taunt from the owner of the tower. Go back and examine the narrow path at the upper side of the path. Just face north and you'll trigger a mechanism that changes the layout. Walk down the path to the lower side of the floor. There's a treasure chest with [ECHO HERBS] at the top left corner, past the stairs to the next floor. Floor 6 It's just a single path starting at the upper right with nothing to do or find. Make your way around to the stairs at the lower right corner of the floor. Floor 7 Slightly more interesting as you start out at the middle of the south side of the floor. Go right, and up, and open two treasure chests: the left one contains a [BOMB FRAGMENT] and the right has another [ECHO HERBS]. Walk back and to the left, following the single path to the stairs in the upper right corner of the floor. Floor 8 You start out at the lower right corner of this larger floor. Go left, up, and right, to the upper right corner to find a treasure chest with a weapon for a Monk: [SONIC KNUCKLES]. Walk back all the way to the left wall, and down, to find the stairs to the next floor. Floor 9 Not far to go now, and the boss is on the next floor. Walk left and down at the junction, and right to reach the first treasure chest. The route is obscured with the high walls, but it's simple to work it out. Open the chest to acquire the [SALAMAND SWORD] which deals fire damage as well as having higher attack power than anything else so far. From here, go left to the wall, and up, to open the second chest that contains [FLAME MAIL]. Both these can be equipped to a Red Mage or Warrior. Walk down to the lower wall and all the way right to find the last chest which contains an attack item: [ZEUS'S WRATH]. Climb the final stairs, check equipment is the best you have and everyone is at full health. Walk forwards to meet the boss. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - MEDUSA | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 17 | 3000 | 35 | 22 | 1680 | 2600 | None | Tower of Owen |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Hi-Potion 3 - Hi-Potion 4 - Hi-Potion | | 5 - Hi-Potion 6 - Hi-Potion 7 - Hi-Potion 8 - Phoenix Down | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 14/15 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o As the name suggests, Medusa's main threat is that she can turn people into stone and for that you'll need the Golden Needle item, but there's a good chance that her "Stare" won't have any effect at all. Her physical attack is a strike on one that hurts for around 50-100 damage and she might hit them twice, which hurts. She can inflict silence and use Blizzara, Fira and Thundara magic, which is dangerous if she casts a spell on one, rather than on the group. She gets two turns on every round so the real threat is if she uses magic twice on the same person, but that's unlikely to happen as she mostly uses her weaker physical attack and ineffective Stare. Use the Ice Staff with a mage and it should inflict around 200 - 230+ damage. Thunder does around 200 damage to her, and you might as well go all out with your Level 3 magic if you have mages. Thundara does over 350 damage. Fire off ice spells which seem to do more damage than anything else, and use arrows with that element if you have them. Of course you could always speed things up with a couple of thrown items. Keep everyone in good health at all times, and use Hi-Potions freely if you need to supplement healing spells. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o After this, Desch does his stuff and you lose him as an ally. He instructs you to go to the island of the dwarves next... and Hey! You land back on board the Enterprise outside the tower, with everyone at full health. Talk to the dwarf by the grey stone platform and he'll ask you to find Gutsco and retrieve the Horn of Ice. You're also told about the village of Gysahl. It's situated on the west coast of the outer ring of land, bordered with mountains. This place is worth a visit because of all the Level 4 magic sold, although Libra and Silence are probably the only ones to bother with. It never seems worth while attempting to inflict status effects when there's a good chance they won't work. Inside the Inn you'll find find a bar and a dancer who'll perform for you. The door at the back of the room leads to the Inn and item shop that sells the Gysahl Greens if you want more. There's a BIG SECRET here. Walk through the right wall of the bar, between the plant trough and the small pot, into a dark passage that ends up inside a small room with a yellow cloaked mage. He reveals the game's records with the Bestiary and Achievements! The Bestiary lists enemies in numerical order with the number defeated, and shows a picture of each one, in situ. It also details the HP, Gil, Experience given, Level, and Attack and Defence. The Achievements list: - Clear Time (when completing the game) - Chests Opened (a percentage) - Enemies Defeated - Battles Fled - Max Damage - Max Hits - Master Cards The house behind the Inn contains a wellspring that revives the dead, and there's a Moogle outside. Walk up the right side of the village and over the small bridge. The house is inhabited by a Chocobo rancher who tells you about a special Chocobo that likes Gysahl greens. Place the item near the tree in a Chocobo Woods and you might meet the boss of the Chocobos. Zoom in on the left pot at the back of the room to receive a free [GYSAHL GREENS] and there's another [GYSAHL GREENS] in the right pot. Cross the bridge behind this house, at the north east of the village and enter the small house to find an item shop that just sells one item: the Magic Key. These can be used to open those locked doors inside the Castle if you didn't bother to change jobs to a Thief, but you don't need to buy any after finding the freebies. Before leaving this shop, turn to the right and walk forwards and you'll go through a secret passage in the wall that takes you behind the counter. Open the treasure chest (it will be hidden behind the wall when you're next to it) to pinch a [SHURIKEN]. Walk right, past the field, to the area of grass and trees. Go down as far as you can go, keeping close to the river bank, and use the zoom to spot three sparkles in the grass. You'll pick up a [MAGIC KEY] to the right, another [MAGIC KEY] at the left, and [GYSAHL GREENS] in the upper tuft of grass. ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Magic Key | 100 | Opens locked doors ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Gysahl Greens | 150 | It could be used to attract something ----------------------+--------+----------+------------------------------------ MAGIC SHOP | Cost | Type and Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Toad | 1000 | White Lv.2 Inflicts toad or removes toad Mini | 1000 | White Lv.2 Shrinks and unshrinks target Break | 3000 | Black Lv.4 Inflicts petrification Shade | 3000 | Black Lv.4 Inflicts paralysis Libra | 3000 | White Lv.4 Displays weak points Confuse | 3000 | White Lv.4 Inflicts confusion Silence | 3000 | White Lv.4 Inflicts silence ______________________|________|_______________________________________________ =============================================================================== 21. SUBTERRANEAN LAKE ................................................... *W21 =============================================================================== TASK : Find Gutsco to obtain the Horn of Ice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Through the pool inside the Dwarven Hollows Items [7] : Gold Needle x3, Zeus's Wrath x2, 3000 Gil x2 Wellspring : No Area Enemies: 55: Bomb, 56: Manticore, 57: Stalagmite, 58: Sea Devil, 59: Merman, 60: Ruinous Wave Recommended Level: 15/16 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starting out at the main floor of the Dwarven Hollows, walk left and go down the stairs to reach the underground lake. Turn everyone into Toads and enter the water. Change back to normal before proceeding down the cave. You'll need some Mallet and Gold Needle items in here as well as ensuring you have Teleport magic so you don't have to walk out of there after beating the boss! Use the Ice Staff with Mages on Bombs to overkill them by a huge amount, and you can use any magic on the Manticores. Watch out for this enemy when it uses ice magic on one party member as that can be pretty damaging. This is why you needed that Ice armour! The Stalagmite is another enemy to be wary of as it might petrify someone and you'll have to use the Gold Needle on them. Keep everyone in good health at all times as usual. There's only one way to go, so head right and down to reach the first of two bridges. Cross the second bridge and open the visible treasure chest for a [GOLD NEEDLE]. From here, go right, through the darkness to the next cave where there's nothing to find. The stairs down to the next level are found at the upper right. In the next cavern, go over the first bridge and head left to find a chest with a [ZEUS'S WRATH] close to the second bridge. Cross that bridge and go left, keeping close to the upper edge of the floor. That takes you to a second chest with another [ZEUS'S WRATH]. Go left a few steps where you'll see a bridge heading up the cavern. But walk down from here and you'll find a chest in the lower left corner of the cavern. This one contains a [GOLD NEEDLE]. Cross the bridge and there's a second [GOLD NEEDLE] in a treasure chest at the far side. You'll probably need these as the purple enemies use a petrification attack. The exit is at the upper right of the cavern. Inside the next cave, walk left and up to find a chest with [3000 GIL]. Walk right, and there's a second [3000 GIL] inside another chest. Check everyone's health before going further as you'll meet the prey as soon as you move to the golden floor of the cave. I only ever encountered the Merman enemy in this watery cavern, so stick around until it turns up if you want to complete the Bestiary. You'll also encounter the Ruinous Wave and Sea Devil in here and all these enemies are weak to Lightning magic. Just a quick reminder, don't worry about using all your MP up on spells because the team will be fully healed at the end of the battle and able to use the Teleport spell to leave the cavern. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - GUTSO THE ROGUE | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 17 | 3500 | 35 | 24 | 2304 | 3500 | None | Subterranean Lake | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Hi-Potion 3 - Hi-Potion 4 - Hi-Potion | | 5 - Hi-Potion 6 - Hi-Potion 7 - Hi-Potion 8 - Phoenix Down | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 15/16 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o This tricky customer uses the Mini spell on the party, and that will cause problems for anyone who's not a mage. They won't be able to make a dent in him, and they will be vulnerable to any attacks. Change them back to normal immediately either by using Mini magic on one or the Mallet item. To target one person select the Player option at the top right of the screen and this will display the party names at the lower left. Level 3 magic from a mage inflicts around 350-400 HP of damage and you should use your strongest spells first, as usual. Don't bother trying out status ailments as they are bound to miss. Keep everyone in full health because he might hit the same person twice on one turn doing well over 200 HP damage and double that if he manages a critical hit. When his health is low Gutsco might use Cure on himself, healing for around 90 HP. Mini might target everyone, and the annoying thing about this is when you attempt to cure the status and he inflicts mini again. This was the first time I had to use a Phoenix Down when he walloped someone who was still in Mini form, If that happens, make sure to heal that person as fast as you can, with a Hi-Potion. This is a good time to use a couple of Antarctic Wind and Zeus's Wrath items. If someone is in mini form they can still inflict damage with these items, and they will cause around 350 damage. You really want to get this battle ended as soon as possible! You'll obtain [HORN OF ICE] after Gutsco collapses into the hoard of gold and disappears. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Use Teleport to return to the world map and save your game. Enter the Hollows again to speak to the leader and hand over the horn. He removes the barrier on the shrine so you can place the horn on the right side of the stone. Cue, more trickery! Talk to the dwarves to get instructions about where to go and what to do next: go to the mountain to the north. Do some more shopping now you have more cash and stock up on any items that are running low. =============================================================================== 22. MOLTEN CAVE AND CHOCOBO WOODS 3 ..................................... *W22 =============================================================================== TASK : Find Gutsco, again! Obtain the Horn of Ice, finally! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Island at the northwest of the continent. Items [7] : Antarctic Wind x2, Freezing Blade, Phoenix Down x2, Hi-Potion, Impact Claws, Horns of Ice Wellspring : No Enemies : 61: Ballon, 62: Myrmecoleon, 63: Crocotta, 64: Adamantoise, 65: Red Marshmallow Recommended Level: 17/18 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sail around to the western coast of the Dwarven Hollows island and land. Walk into the forest and you'll discover another Chocobo Woods. But it's not of much help as your destination lies inside the mountain. However, give the Chocobo boss a whirl. Approach the large tree and touch the ! mark. You'll get a message and the option to select an item from the inventory. Choose the Gysahl Greens and a Fat Chocobo will appear behind the tree. You can store spare items with the creature. Save your game before entering the Molten Cave. It's probably worth while obtaining all the treasure, even if it means walking over more lava than strictly necessary. I'd suggest making two trips, the first to obtain most of the treasure and then, teleport out, heal up and save. On the second visit you can take the most direct route to the final room. Use the Ice Staff as an item, frequently, to save on MP use and to inflict massive damage on most enemies here. Watch out for the Crocotta that can cause sleep, making the target very vulnerable to attack, and the Myrmecoleon that might petrify. Save the attack items for the boss! It's best to have a Red or White Mage in here, with the Cure spell, so you don't waste potions. Check that you have the Level 3 Blizzara spell equipped to someone as this will be very helpful against the boss. B1 From the cave entrance, walk down and all the way left, past some steps, and then, up to find a treasure chest with an [ANTARCTIC WIND] item. Hopefully someone is wearing protective equipment because there's no option but to walk over the molten lava to progress further. Go down the steps into the lava and head right until you can climb up shallow steps to find a treasure chest. This also contains an [ANTARCTIC WIND]. Walk back across the lava going straight ahead to reach the stairs in the lower left corner of the cave. Check on health after each lava excursion and use the Cure spell from the menu on everyone to top up HP. B2 You arrive at the right side of the cave. Walk up and left, and down through the lave, ignoring the left turning, and heading to the right where you'll find a chest with the valuable [FREEZING BLADE]. Equip this to a Warrior or Red Mage for extra damage to the enemies and remove the Salamand Sword if that's still equipped to someone. Go back through the lava and turn left at the junction (going under a lava river) and up at the next. You'll be on safe ground and will discover a chest with a [PHOENIX DOWN]. Check on health again before stepping back into the lava and wading through it, heading straight down the cave, to the lower left of the floor. Here, you'll find a chest with a [HI-POTION]. Back into the lava and walk all the way up, and left at the crossroads, to find the stairs to the next floor. B4 and B5 You enter at the right side of this cave and should walk through the lava all the way to the left, to reach a treasure chest with a Monk's weapon [IMPACT CLAWS]. Then, it's just a quick wade up the narrow passage to a second chest with a [PHOENIX DOWN]. Check the suspicious looking rock for a sparkle and touch the ! mark to open the wall to the left of the treasure chest. Retreat at this point if you've been having any trouble and need to heal up. Otherwise, just carry on, up through this small empty cave to the final floor. B6 Check your equipment and health before moving forwards towards the fire crystal and a fiery Gutsco. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - SALAMANDER | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 19 | 5700 | 41 | 25 | 2744 | 3700 | Ice.Water | Molten Cave | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Hi-Potion 3 - Hi-Potion 4 - Hi-Potion | | 5 - Hi-Potion 6 - Hi-Potion 7 - Hi-Potion 8 - Phoenix Down | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 18 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o This is a much more straightforward tussle than the previous encounter with Gutsco as the Salamander doesn't use any annoying status changing spells and is weak to ice and water. However, he has high HP and a very nasty Fire Breath skill that can take you unawares as he won't use it until the later stages of battle. Although you can use the Ice Staff as in item with a mage it doesn't do all that much damage to him, and neither does the level 1 Blizzard magic. However, that depends a bit on Job level, as the higher that level, the more damage! Ideally employ your best weapons (the Freezing Blade you found) and ice spells: Blizzara will do over 500 HP damage and around 700 with a dedicated Black Mage, and it's also a good time to use a couple of Arctic or Antarctic Wind items. The weaker version does around 550 damage. I used the Thief to throw these items and heal the rest of team with items if necessary since this is the fastest character. The White Mage should heal everyone on most turns, and save the Cura magic for when you really need it. The Black and Red Mage should cast Blizzara or attack with ice weapons when the magic runs out. For most of the battle the only risk is if the boss hits the same person twice and manages a critical attack too. But when his health is low he will blast you all with a Fire Breath attack that does over 200 HP damage and might kill anyone that has been attacked once before. He can do this on more than one turn as well and will keep doing that until your whole team is dead! This is the point at which to let rip with all the Antartic Wind items in your possession to defeat him as quickly as possible. If someone is killed revive them with your fastest team member, (the Thief is always reliable for this task) and heal them with a Hi-Potion in the same round or there's a good chance they will be killed again. You obtain the [HORNS OF ICE] after defeating Gutsco again and receive the power of fire. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Everyone is at full health again, even if they ended the battle dead. (Oops!) New jobs will have been added to the Jobs menu. To return to the world map walk back down the cave and around the lava to the far end where there's a teleport device. Save your game! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CRYSTAL OF FIRE - JOBS CHANGE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make new decisions about your future! Check the JOBS option to view the extended list of possible jobs: NEW! RANGER - best on the back row as they equip bows. Barrage is a multiple arrow attack that uses up 4 arrows. KNIGHT - front row fighter who can equip strong armour swords and shields. SCHOLAR - back row is the best for this job. They use books and have access to all the scholar defensive gear. Doubles the effect of items. GEOMANCER - another back row job as they only equip Bell weapons and mage robes. At least their magic doesn't use any MP. It's worth while experimenting with all these new classes and change over so that the transfer time is the minimum. But DON'T change to the Geomancer just yet as you won't have any weapons for them and you'll need to hang onto a good Black Mage. Really, you need to keep White Mage too, although the Scholar is handy in the next boss fight so... you can get by without a White Mage for a short while if you stock up on Hi-Potions and Potions. In this game I went with only a couple of changes: Luneth - Black Mage Arc - Red Mage to Knight (2 battles) Refia - White Mage Ingus - Thief to Scholar NOTES The Knight has a special ability called "Defend" that triggers when someone else goes into the yellow HP danger zone, as they will stand in to protect them from death! They might step in to take a hit for a damaged ally at random. Also, they can equip the Ultima weapon, the best weapon in the game that does not require a Job Level of 99 to obtain. You might want to keep the Thief since they have the useful Flee ability, and if they reach high levels for this job they can steal a very powerful weapon later on in the game. I decided to change the Thief to a Scholar for the next boss and then change back to the Thief afterwards: that's always an option with any job. =============================================================================== 23. DWARVEN HOLLOWS 2 ................................................... *W23 =============================================================================== TASK : Collect all the treasure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Island, west from the Tower of Owen in the outer sea. Services : As before Items [16] : Ottershroom, Gauntlets, Scholar Robe, Scholar Hat, Knight Armor, Phoenix Down x2, Heroic Shield, Elixir, Killer Bow, Gold Needle, Book Of Fire, Book Of Ice, Book Of Light, Gysahl Greens, Magic Key Wellspring : Yes. Revive only ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sail around the corner of the island and return to the Hollow. Everyone knows you've been successful and you'll get new responses from the dwarven denizens, although there are no new Mognet letters. Talk to the leader who gives you a [MAGIC KEY]. Talk to the dwarf guard on the stairs at the right and he'll allow you access to the treasure room. Go down the steps and the rock has gone! Inside the cave you'll find 15 treasure chests! In order, from left to right they contain: Top Row [OTTERSHROOM], [GAUNTLETS], [SCHOLAR ROBE], [SCHOLAR HAT], [KNIGHT ARMOR], [PHOENIX DOWN], [HEROIC SHIELD]. Bottom Row [ELIXIR], [KILLER BOW], [GOLD NEEDLE], [BOOK OF FIRE], [BOOK OF ICE], [BOOK OF LIGHT], [PHOENIX DOWN], [GYSAHL GREENS]. Attempt to leave the Hollow and a scene unfolds as you're asked to go to Tokkul. You're also advised to use a Scholar to see the weak point of the foe you'll meet, although this can also be achieved by learning the Libra Level 4 magic with a White Mage. Sort out the jobs, stock up on Hi-Potions and ensure you've found all the items everywhere! If you're using a bow you might need to buy more arrows. =============================================================================== 24. CASTLE HEIN ......................................................... *W24 =============================================================================== TASK : Find the Royal Sword of Argus. Defeat Hein. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Inside the "tree" in the desert outside Tokkul. Items [12] : Mini (White Lv.2), Holy Arrow x20, Phoenix Down x4, Bomb Fragment, Antarctic Wind, 3000 Gil, Zeus's Wrath, Royal Sword, Elixir, Rune Bow, Fang of Wind Wellspring : Yes. A pot restores HP/MP. Enemies : 66: Pharaoh, 67: Lemur, 68: Lamia, 69: Demon, 70: Dullahan ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before starting this next sequence of events and entering Castle Hein make sure you have the Level 4 White Magic spell of Libra, purchased in Gysahl, OR a party member using the Scholar job. You will have to analyse Hein's weak point when you reach the boss. Also, this is a once only visit so you'll need to find all the treasure and fight all the monsters for the achievements. Save your game, sail south to Tokkul and enter the village, after which where events take over for a while. You'll end up inside Castle Hein, the cursed Elder Tree that was floating around the desert near Tokkul. You'll start facing down the screen, but turn around and walk to right a few steps. Walk through a hidden opening in the wall to reach the adjoining room where you'll discover King Argus! Talk to him and the purple clothed soldiers to learn more about the situation. Go right, through the wall to the next room where the soldier at the top right will challenge you to a battle. He's a Demon. He's not really a boss, and only has 742 HP. He's weak to Light attacks so Holy Arrows work well and use of an Ice Staff is very effective if you still have a mage with high job levels. Walk out of the room, go right and up into the fourth cell where a little person will give you another [MINI] spell. The pot in here will heal HP and MP. Use the Mini spell to shrink everyone and enter the hole to the right side of the pot. At least, do so IF you've still got someone with enough MP to cast a level 2 spell. If not, just change jobs and a Scholar can go back to a White Mage with no transfer battles, just as a Knight can revert to a Red Mage with no battles and you can restore the loss of MP at the pot. After entering the hole you'll officially be inside Hein's Castle. Cast Mini again to return to full size and adjust jobs if required. Enemies appear everywhere now and you'll encounter more Demons as well as Pharaohs, both of which can hit you hard and the Pharaoh might inflict sleep, poison, or blind. Lamia causes petrify or confusion, which is dangerous. Use Holy arrows from a Black Mage or Ranger on these enemies, but don't use Cure as they are not undead, and keep everyone in good health at all times in case of back attacks. There isn't another healing place so conserve MP as best you can. Floor 1 You arrive at the right side of tis floor. Walk up, left and all the way down to the lower right corner of the cave to find a chest with [HOLY ARROWS x20]. Then, go back up, left and up to the top left corner to find two chests with [PHOENIX DOWN] and [PHOENIX DOWN]. The exit to the adjoining cave is where you see green light at the lower left of the cave. Walk up to find a chest with another [PHOENIX DOWN] and then back down, and up the left side of the cave to reach the stairs to the next floor Floor 2 There are three doors along the lower side of this squared cave, in the passage where you start out, and the exit is in the middle of the upper wall. YThe left door leads to a room with [3000 GIL] inside the left chest, and the right chest contains a [BOMB FRAGMENT]. I met Lamia in here for the first time. She's as dangerous as she looks, causing confusion or petrify, so don't take any chances. She's also weak to Light magic. The middle door leads to another two chests: the left one has an [ANTARCTIC WIND] and the right another [3000 GIL]. The right door leads to another small room with another [3000 GIL] in the left chest and a [ZEUS'S WRATH] item in the right one. That's the lot, so walk up either side of the room and take the stairs to the next floor. Floor 3 Walk straight up to find a chest with the valuable [ROYAL SWORD]. Equip this to the Knight if you have one. You'll probably encounter a powerful headless rider in here, called Dullahan. This enemy has 1000 HP and I just threw a Bomb Fragment at him from the front row which killed him outright, although he has no special weakness. Might not do much for job levels, but it's an easy win when you're getting close to a boss. Go left and through a green lit opening into the adjoining cave. There's nothing else to find, so continue up the stairs to the next floor. Floor 4 You're outside now, on a path that leads up the side of the huge tree structure. Some way up the path you'll stop at a treasure chest that contains yet another [PHOENIX DOWN]. Floor 5 Back inside the tree, walk left to find a chest with a welcome [ELIXIR]. Return to the entrance and walk up, past a pond and a junction, and you'll find a treasure chest containing a [RUNE BOW] which can only be equipped by a Ranger, and not by a Black Mage. Go back to the junction and turn left to find the stairs to the next, and final, floor. Floor 6 You have time to check out health and equipment again before moving forwards to challenge the boss. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - HEIN | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 22 | 4500 | 47 | 26 | 3464 | 4300 | None | Hein's Castle | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Hi-Potion 3 - Hi-Potion 4 - Hi-Potion | | 5 - Hi-Potion 6 - Hi-Potion 7 - Hi-Potion 8 - Phoenix Down | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 20 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Hein isn't easy, especially if you've changed jobs and most of the team are weaker than before. He gets two turns on each round and casts a range of magic: Blizzara, Thundara, Poison and Sleep and Confusion. Although the details suggest he has no weakness, after the first round or two he'll start using Barrier Shift. This changes his weakness, meaning that your Fira spells might suddenly do less damage if he's currently weak to ice and strong against fire. Luckily his use of this skill takes up one of his turns so it's not all bad news! By using the Scholar's special Study skill, or the Level 4 White magic spell Libra (bought at Gysahl) with a White Mage, you can find out exactly what that weakness is! Use attack items against him with the Scholar as these will do double the normal damage, and your highest level magic, and try to make sure you choose the ones that correspond to his current weakness. Since he starts the battle with no weaknesses you're safe to use any attack on the first round. His physical attack is a disdainful wallop with his cloak that can cause around 150-200 damage. If he uses a magic attack on one character then they will die, as it causes over 500 HP damage. Fortunately, he only used this attack once for me. The tricky bit is to use a Phoenix Down and fully heal the downed character on the next turn and hope you're clear about turn order! One time I got it wrong and ended up wasting a Hi-Potion on someone who was already fully healed. The other problem is that he'll do a Barrier Shift change of status at the start of the round, after you've set all your attacks based on outdated information, so I'm not sure how helpful the Scholar's skill really is. On the plus side, the Scholar has another, even more valuable attribute: one of their skills is to double the effect of items, both healing and attack ones. If you keep the Scholar on the front row their attack items do even more damage. One suggestion is to throw two different items on one round, and there's a chance that one of them will be his weakness and the other will do a lot of damage too. If you're using the Ranger's Barrage equip more powerful Holy Arrows, and use ordinary physical attacks with the Knight. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Celebrate your victory with triumphant music and get thanked by the Elder Tree. The tree leaves the desert and returns to the Living Woods, and it frees the captive people. You're given the key item: [FANG OF WIND]. You gain control again on the world map, just outside the woods, south from Castle Argus, with everyone at full health. The Living Woods location is closed off to you now, so you cannot get the reactions of all the fairies. =============================================================================== 25. CASTLE ARGUS (2) AND NEW TRANSPORT B ................................ *W25 =============================================================================== TASK : Talk to King Argus and then meet Cid to obtain the airship. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Castle Argus is at the west of the world map. Services : None Items [3] : Elixir x2, Wheel of Time Wellspring : Yes. Revive and HP/MP restoration ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT! You'll get a new ship in Canaan, and after you defeat the boss in a new world you will NEVER be able to sail on the seas of this world again. Seek out any missing sea monsters now if you want to achieve the full set, because this is your last opportunity! Go back to Gysahl to see the game records again if you want to check up on nay missing monsters first. Walk south, and then, east, following the coastline, to return to Tokkul Village where everyone is happy the prisoners have been released. I was hoping to find some treasure inside that fireplace in the first blue roofed house now the kids were safe, but there's nothing to find. No-one gives you any reward for all your efforts and no-one opens a shop. Return to your ship and sail north west to Castle Argus to talk to the inhabitants and find any treasure you didn't acquire earlier. Inside the dining room on the third floor talk to the king. He gives you the [WHEEL OF TIME] and tells you to take it to Cid in Canaan. Talk to the guys sitting at the right of the table and they explain how to open the locked doors and tell you where to find the hidden treasure. Make your way to the upper left door at the back of floor 2 (going through the hidden passage at the right side the stairs on floor 2) where you had to unlock the door. Inside, you'll find a magic researcher who'll give you [ELIXIR x2]. Return to the dining room and walk down the central stairs to the outer area with the healing waters talk to more soldiers for extra details about the story. From the shore south of Castle Argus, sail east and land. You should be close to Canaan, the village on the coast. Walk up to the back of the village to find Cid's house, and talk to him for a scene and an explanation about the nature of this world. Leave the village and enter your ship again. Everything seems the same, but touch the ship and it will transform into an airship! You can only land on water but you cannot sail on the seas in this form. If you want to sail again, just touch the ship when it's on the water and it will change back to the Enterprise. The airship cannot cross mountains, but that won't matter. ----------------- THE SURFACE WORLD ----------------- Your next task is to find the surface world and leave this floating continent. Simply fly to the edge of the map and keep going into the clouds. A scene will occur, after which you're in a new section of the map. To return to the previous world, just fly west, to the large floating island. Sail or fly over to the largest island at the east of the surface world. There are no enemies on the sea or in the air in this new world. Stop to check the map to see the destination. It's quite a long way off! The world is round, so if you fly off the edge of the map to the south you'll return at the north. You cannot progress further on this island until you've found a special someone, but you can explore a little if you wish. Land on the shore and walk up to the grey temple like building to enter the Temple of Water. Walk straight through the first two rooms until you reach a small water shard. But it's protected by some kind of force field. The Cave of Tides is found at nearby mountain, but again, you need to find that person first. =============================================================================== 26. WRECKED SHIP AND TEMPLE OF WATER .................................... *W26 =============================================================================== TASK : Heal the girl and find an ally. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Off the small island at the northeast of the new land Items [3] : Blood Sword, Zeus's Wrath, Crystal Shard Wellspring : No Ally : Aria Area Enemies: None ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sail or fly to the small island at the northeast of the map, and land on the southern shore. Enter the grounded ship as there's nothing else to do on the island and there are no enemies. You won't find anything on the deck so turn left and walk through the hidden opening to go down some stairs. Descend the stairs in the middle of this deck and you'll find two treasure chests on the lower deck. The one near the stairs contains a [BLOOD SWORD] and the second one has a [ZEUS'S WRATH]. Equip the sword if you're using a Knight as it absorbs HP when attacking. Walk over to the right side of this room where a girl called Aria is lying on a bed. Talk to the green robed caretaker and use something from the bag to restore health to Aria by touching the ! mark next to her. I went with the cheapest option, a Potion, and that seemed to work. She tells you what to do next, to take the crystal shard to the Temple of Water, and joins the party! You'd think she' wear something warmer after being ill, but maybe she's tougher than she looks. Use the speech bubble to talk to her and she'll help you out in battles. You can return to the floating continent with her in the team with no problems. Fly back to the large island to the south of the wrecked ship and land on the southern shore. Walk to the temple building and go straight through until you reach the altar room. Aria will pick up the [CRYSTAL SHARD] although the item doesn't appear in any inventory. Leave the temple and don't bother exploring elsewhere as there's nothing to find. =============================================================================== 27. CAVE OF TIDES ....................................................... *W27 =============================================================================== TASK : Find the Water Crystal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Inside the mountain on the large island. Items [1] : Blizzaga (Black Magic Lv. 4) Wellspring : No Ally : Aria Enemies : 75: Cockatrice, 76: Poison Toad, 77: Twin Heads, 78: Roper, 79: Agaliarept Recommended Level: 20/21 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Save your game before entering the cave. Enemy encounters begin as soon as you enter the cave. Use Lightning on the Roper, Poison Toad, and Agaliarept, and anything you like on the Twin Heads. All these enemies have nearly 1000 HP and the Roper might paralyse someone, but that status effect disappears after the battle is over. The blue Agaliarept uses low level Blizzard magic and the Cockatrice might turn someone to stone: in fact they can easily turn everyone to stone, so be extra cautious. Most of these battles are easy enough to win but you'll need to keep everyone in good health which requires multiple uses of the Cure spell. Use the lower level fire and blizzard spells with a mage, or use staffs from the item menu to save the more powerful thunder ones for the boss. Don't run out of Hi-Potions or MP before meeting the boss. It would be better to teleport out and re-stock rather than risk defeat. During the long walk to the boss Aria might turn up and heal everyone with Cura, but she only did this once for me, so I wouldn't rely on that. She will also cast the Protect spell on a rare occasion. Walk down and follow the only route to a blocked door and a short scene. After Aria does her stuff you can continue. In the next room, walk left to cross a long narrow bridge and then, down the cave to the adjoining cave. Keep walking left, over a short bridge, and down the stairs to the next floor. Go left again, following the only path across the first two bridges, and then ignore the third bridge. Walk down the fourth bridge to find the exit. You're now in a much larger cavern and there's a treasure chest to find. Walk up the stairs, and right, across the higher bridge, and follow the path next to the cave wall, down, up some more stairs, and down again. until you reach the lower right corner of the floor. You'll probably run into the Agaliarept enemy here, also weak to lightning. The treasure chest contains the spell [BLIZZAGA], level 4 Black magic. Return to the first stairs or teleport out. Leaving the cave helps to raise levels with a second trip and maybe change the jobs you've set if you find any difficulty with the monsters in the cave. It also gives you the chance to stock on extra items, such as Lightning Arrows from the Village of the Ancients, or Hi-Potions. Once you've got the treasure you don't need to take the detour again and will just walk right, across the bridge, and down the cave to find the stairs that lead up to the final room. Inside the next cave just walk around the central pool to find the stairs up to the final floor. You'll find pairs of the large purple Cockatrice enemy here that can hit you for a whole lot of damage. Use any attacks on it to destroy it fast before it gets the chance to petrify everyone. There's still time to make minor adjustments before walking forwards to the Water Crystal altar, and after some scenes you'll meet Kraken. One time my party was: Ranger/Job Level 16, White Mage/Job Level 20, Black Mage/ Job Level 32, and Knight/Job Level 13, and in this game I had stuck with the Thief who had Job Level 21, but the rest were around the same. Everyone was at Level 21. Aria doesn't take part in this battle. To survive the powerful magic of this boss, everyone needs to have over 700 HP, which they won't have at this level, but if you don't mind the loss of one or two Phoenix Downs it's perfectly possible at this lower level. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - KRAKEN | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 24 | 8000 | 55 | 27 | 5280 | 5500 | Lightning | Cave of Tides | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Hi-Potion 3 - Hi-Potion 4 - Hi-Potion | | 5 - Hi-Potion 6 - Hi-Potion 7 - Hi-Potion 8 - Phoenix Down | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 21 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o This boss is easy in a way, because he only uses ice magic and the Blinda spell which has a low chance of blinding a physical attacker if you've a mixed party. It won't matter if a mage is blind. The only problem is that he has two turns on each round and he could kill someone with a single Blizzara attack. Other than that his normal physical attack does around 200 HP damage. Keep everyone at full health if you can manage it, and keep those with less HP on the back row. Attack with Lightning elemental weapons, magic and items (Zeus's Wrath) especially if you're fielding a Scholar, doubling the effect. Use Cura on the whole party on every round with a White Mage or Hi-Potions for anyone whose HP is low. A Ranger using Barrage with Lightning arrows can inflict nearly 1000 damage to him and Thundara from a Black Mage will do around 600-800. Attack with the Blood Sword and Serpent Sword on a Knight to inflict additional elemental damage, and two Spark Daggers for a Thief. Just keep doing that for four or five rounds and he'll be calamari. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Things happen after the battle and you're told to find Doga, on the continent of Dalg. You awaken in a new location with everyone at full health and some nice new jobs to investigate! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CRYSTAL OF WATER - JOBS CHANGE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make new decisions about your future! Check the JOBS option to view the extended list of possible jobs: NEW! DRAGOON - the spear wielding jumper who can fight from the back row. Their skill has them jump and leave the battle for a turn until they crash down from above, inflicting powerful damage. DARK KNIGHT - front row fighter with special weapons that deal damage to monsters that divide. Their skill uses up some HP when activated. BARD - back row song specialist who doesn't use MP but plays different harps to generate some useful effects. VIKING - front line fighter with high defence. Their skill makes enemies target them and no-one else, if it works. Very useful for powerful single enemies and bosses. Put them on the back row with two shields and see them shrug off damage! EVOKER - back row mage who needs summons magic to be useful. You might want to wait until you've seen the cost of the new equipment before making decisions about new jobs. I had around 25000 Gil by this point but that's not enough to treat everyone to new gear. One suggestion is to change the Black Mage to a Viking, or Monk, giving them a boost to HP and adding another powerful physical attacker to the mix for the upcoming boss. Or just stick with the Knight for now. I went for the Monk, for a change, and saved on expense by giving Luneth the Impact Claws and Sonic Knuckles. You'll have to change to the Dragoon and Dark Knight eventually, but it's not a matter of urgency for now. However, the next boss is immune to magic and you'll need at least two powerful fighters and there are locked doors to open so hanging onto a Thief might be wise, although you can always change back to that job when required. Refia - White Mage Luneth - Black Mage to Monk (2 battles) Arc - Knight to Ranger (2 battles) Ingus - Thief to Viking (2 battles) NOTE There was no music at all in the Surface World on my iPad. I'd like to know if that was just a glitch with my game or if anyone else has had the same problem. =============================================================================== 28. AMUR, THE CITY OF WATER ............................................. *W28 =============================================================================== TASK : Find a way into the sewers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : In the middle of the western continent Services : Item Shop, Inn (200 Gil), Bar, Weapon Shop, Armour Shop Items [6] : Gysahl Greens x3, Black Garb, Thief Gloves, Black Cowl Wellspring : Yes. Revive only Area Enemies: 84: Black Flan, 85: Hellgaroo, 86: Vulcan, 87: Dracrocotta, 88: Magician ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This town is divided into 9 sections with bridges over the water, and situated on the southeast continent of the new world map. The airship is waiting for you on the water nearby. Except, that you'll find that your ship has been chained up and won't move. You can discover why and what to do by talking to people in the inn, but there's no requirement to do that. Take some time to explore the town, before leaving to discover this brave new world! The old man near the beds will give you a Job description for all current jobs. The couple of people at the right side of the inn will tell you to do this. Go upstairs and talk to the people in the bar for more information about the location of the person who locked up the ship. It seems they are to the south, across a bog, and you need some special shoes which Delilah would know about, and she lives in the sewers. Before leaving the upper room attempt to play the piano and see what happens next! The shops are on the central section, and the Inn where you wake up is at the middle left section. The Moogle is found on the middle back section. The revive wellspring is inside the house at the bottom left corner of town, below the Inn. Talk to the red-haired girl at the entrance to be treated to a very weird dance. This is essential to progress the story. The house over the bridge to the right contains an old man called Gil, who will lead you to the sewers entrance after you've seen the 4 old men. The sewer is over the bridge behind his house and he opens the gate for you. There's nothing to find inside his house even though it's full of jumbled objects. But you can find some useful equipment once you get access to the sewers so hold off buying anything for a little longer. ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Potion | 50 | Restores 50 HP. Don't buy anything your team cannot equip! And note that there is nothing on sale for mages, but do not buy the Thief Gloves, Black Cowl or Black Garb as you'll find these for free soon enough. The Viking Mail and Helm are obtained in a later location, but that's not for a while yet. If you can afford that super bow, then using a Ranger might not be a bad idea, although once again this is something you'll find later on. ---------------- TREASURE HUNTING ---------------- After having met the 4 old men and spoken to Gil he'll lead you to the sewers entrance behind his house. Descend into the water and walk right and around to the island where there's a field. Zoom in to spot four sparkling vegetables. You can pick some plants and obtain [GYSAHL GREENS x4] at the top right corner, and another three of them in the middle row and to the left Leave the island and go left, down, and left again, under a bridge, and then up to north side of the town where you'll discover a small wooded island. Go straight ahead to climb the steps. Use zoom to see a sparkle on the grass just to the right of the steps and pick up a [BLACK GARB]. Edge around the front of the grass, retaining the zoom in view and check out the tree at the right side of the clearing. You'll find a hidden [THIEF GLOVES]. Check the left tree to find a [BLACK COWL]. This black stuff is good for a Monk or a Ranger. ---------------------- EXPLORING OUTSIDE TOWN (Optional) ---------------------- Although you cannot use the airship you still have the Folding Canoe. Simply walk to the water at the east and you'll start using the canoe. Paddle along the river to the northwest of the continent and you'll end up at the shore of the place where the Water Temple and Cave of Tides is located. Canoe to the east from Amur and disembark on the south side of the shallow river. Walk further east into a large wooded area and the then, south. You'll discover a Chocobo wood at the southwestern corner of the woods, bordered by the water and the mountains. Once you have a Chocobo you can travel a long way to the north, running along the western coast of the continent. Be careful though, because if you walk to the northwest you'll come across double rows of grey statues that appear to blow up as you move forwards. In fact, after passing through two sets of them, they will kill the team. Best avoided! There's a second Chocobo Woods at the north. Find the desert and you'll see a wood at the northwest that you have to cross to reach a landlocked lake. To investigate the boggy area south from Amur, run a Chocobo south and west following the edge of the coast. You'll see a castle and a dark patch of ground in front of it. If you step onto that ground, the Chocobo will run off and you're left inside the marsh and will die. The world is a dangerous place! =============================================================================== 29. AMUR SEWERS ......................................................... *W29 =============================================================================== TASK : Find Delilah and obtain the Levigrass Shoes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Inside Amur, at the southeast corner of the river. Items [7] : Cat Claws, Diamond Bell, Hammer, Kaiser Knuckles, Power Bracers, Poison Dagger, Levigrass Shoes Enemies : 80: Darklegs, 81: Gigantoad, 82: Twin Ligur, 83: Stroper Recommended Level : 22 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After kitting out the team and deciding on jobs, or at least, testing some out for now. Walk over the bridge behind Gil's house and go down into the water as he showed you. Go right, and then down the river, past the first turning and you'll find the entrance to the sewers at the south side of the island at the lower right corner of the town. (I bought plenty of cheap iron arrows to use with the bow and the ranger devastated all enemies.) Floors B1 - B2 Walk down and go right to cross the sewer to the other side. Walk down the stairs next to the right wall. On the next floor walk down to enter the sewer, then left and up the steps onto the path. Go up, left, and back down into the water. Walk through the water heading straight to the left and up the steps. Walk down and right, to open the treasure chest on the pathway, and obtain a [CAT CLAWS] before heading down the stairs. Floor B3 This next floor is simple. Walk right, along the raised path to the stairs in the upper right corner. When you reach the middle of the path there's a scene. Those four weird dancing men who rushed off into sewers are trapped. You fight four Gigantoads, in an easy battle. Although they will poison someone, that's simple enough to cure with a Antidote, and other than that there's not much to worry about. Simply attack with lightning if you have magic, or a Light Staff as an item, and your best weapons. After the battle it's essential to talk to all four of the men, so I've heard. Anyhow, do so, and continue down to the next floor. There are still enemies so be cautious and heal up after the battle. Floor B4 Now its gets a little more complicated as there are treasure rooms off the main room. There's a fairly obvious passage through the darkness, near the bottom of the stairs, directly to the right of the first bridge. This takes you to a small room with two chests. The top one has a [DIAMOND BELL], the first weapon you've found for the Bard and the other one contains a [HAMMER], a nice upgrade for a Viking. This is where I first ran into the somewhat elusive Stroper enemy, although they also appear elsewhere on this floor. Return to the previous room and cross the bridge, and keep going left to end up in another hidden room. The chest where you enter has a [KAISER KNUCKLES], another weapon for the Monk. Go down the steps into the water and up onto the path at the left where you'll find two more chests. The lower one contains [POWER BRACERS] that massively increase defence for a Monk, and the upper one a [POISON DAGGER]. Return to the main floor and continue walking up the passage, and follow it all the way around to the lower right corner of the floor where the stairs take you to the final floor. Floor B5 Walk to the right to meet with Delilah and eventually you get the key item: [LEVIGRASS SHOES]! You'll be teleported out of there with no need to use any spells. You won't be at full health, so heal up at an inn and buy anything else you need before you leave. If you're using a bow and arrows, buy 99 Iron and Holy arrows. You can find the 4 weirdos on the grassy island at the lower right of the town and eventually they will send you mail. Talk to the Moogle after all these events and you'll get another letter from Cid - My First Date with Mrs. Cid -. =============================================================================== 30. GOLDOR MANOR ........................................................ *W30 =============================================================================== TASK : Find and defeat Goldor to release the ship. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Behind the bog on the southeast continent Items [13] : Golden Sword x11, Wyvern Claw, Chain Key Enemies : 89: Lost Gold, 90: Gold Eagle, 91: Gold Warrior, 92: Gold Bear, 93: Gold Knight, 94: Nightmare Recommended Level : 23 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you want to cut down the number of enemy encounters on the way to the Manor, then grab yourself a Chocobo! From Amur, head to the east, taking to the river with the canoe, and keep going along the river to the east. Stop off on the south shore when the river turns to the north and walk south through the forested area, to find the Chocobo Woods at the west of the mountain range. From here it's a quick stride back to the west, and then south, between the sea at the west and the mountains to the east. You'll reach a sandy desert and another patch of trees just south from the dirty brown patch of bog. With the Levigrass Shoes in your inventory the Chocobo will walk over the bog, and so will you if you're on foot. Save your game and enter the Manor. In this game my team was Arc: Ranger, Ingus: Viking, Refia: White Mage and Luneth: Monk and the team were at Level 22. Floor 1 All the Gold enemies have around 1000 HP and no weak points, apart from the Gold Eagle that's weak to Wind, the Aero White magic spell. Basically you can you can attack with anything you've got. Enemies include the huge Gold Bear that really looks intimidating! The Nightmare horse will attack with a sleep spell, or use Stare, that might confuse someone. Watch out for these status effects as someone who is confused can really hurt the team if they attack them. You can either wait until they have been hit by an enemy or hit themselves OR use a weak weapon with a mage character to attack them and bring them to their sense. The Gold Knight and Gold Warrior cast Thunder magic on one, and might manage a powerful critical attack that is the only time you might be at risk. I used barrage with iron arrows, a staff to cast magic with the mage, the front-line monk hitting hard, and the Viking following up last with double axes. Walk straight up the large entrance hall into the next room. This is a library but there's nothing to find in the shelves. Go up, and left, and walk down to the bottom wall, ignoring the side halls, and you'll find a row of 12 treasure chests! You'll obtain [GOLDEN SWORD x11] and the final chest yields a [WYVERN CLAW], yet another weapon for the Monk. Not a bad haul. At this point I teleported out as the encounter rate is quite high and this avoids having to fight lots more battles walking back to the entrance hall. If you want to return to town at this point, walk back over the bog and into the small patch of trees. Yep, it's another Chocobo woods! Catch a bird and hotfoot it back to town to sell off those Golden Swords (attack power is only +5) and maybe change jobs now you can afford more equipment. The swords sell for 2500 each, so if you keep one (for completion purposes) and sell the rest that nets you a tidy sum of 25,000 Gil. I bought the Viking equipment as well as buying another 99 Iron Arrows. (You can buy that many to keep in the inventory so long as the rest of the arrows are equipped.) Back in the large entrance hall, ignore every locked door except one. It's half way along the central passage to the right. Open the door with a Thief or Magic Key and turn to the left to access the adjacent room. Walk around this room to find the stairs in the top left corner. I found the Gold Eagle here and finally had a reason to use the Aero magic, at least, I would have, except one barrage and one hit from the monk destroyed the birds. Floor 2 You arrive at the lower right corner of this large room, and the exit is at the upper left corner. The walls are high, and you cannot see far, and the encounter rate is high too! Turn left at the first junction and then up a couple of steps and left again into a more open section. Walk left to the wall, down, and left again around the corner of the wall. Go all the way up the corridor to the top wall, and then, left, and back down to the lower wall. Left again and run up to the exit stairs. Floor 3 Check on health, formation, and equipment and get ready to rumble! With all the battles fought in here my team had reached Level 25, which is probably about a good level for this fight. Ranger had the Selene Bow, Viking the Battleaxe and Hammer, White Mage only had access some staffs that weren't going to be of much use, and Monk had Wyvern Claws and Kaiser Knuckles. As soon as you take a couple of steps inside the next room a scene will start. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - GOLDOR | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 26 | 9000 | 53 | 28 | 6560 | 9900 | None | Goldor's Manor | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Hi-Potion 3 - Hi-Potion 4 - Hi-Potion | | 5 - Hi-Potion 6 - Hi-Potion 7 - Hi-Potion 8 - Phoenix Down | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 25 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Barrage with Holy Arrows did over 1000 damage and the Monk managed around 600, but provoke with the Viking at lowish job level missed so I wouldn't recommend that! It's likely that Goldor will make effective use of the Blind spell and you'll need to heal this if an attacker is afflicted. He might cast it on just one, but more usually on the whole team at once, but you cannot heal everyone at once. He gets two attacks on each round and might also cast Protect on himself, cutting down the damage you can do, but ignore that and carry on regardless. Prioritise curing the blind status effect for the fighters, and forget about the support. However, he might cast Silence on everyone and that isn't good if you've run out of items and are relying on a mage to heal and cure status effects. Goldor is pretty easy to defeat, and does very little actual damage unless he uses Thundara magic, which is a rare occurrence. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o After the battle things don't go quite as expected, but you should walk up to the platform and pick up the [CHAIN KEY]. Everyone will be at full health so you can cast Teleport to get of there fast, or walk back. There are still enemies to fight, although the encounter rate is very low, and there's a short cut back through the gap in the walls. Walk directly right, close to the lower wall of the maze floor and you don't have to take the longer route. Exit the manor, pick up a Chocobo and return to Amur to unlock the ship. ------------------- RETURN OF THE SHIP! ------------------- Remember that you can fly if you want to avoid the sea enemies and use the map to check your precise location. You can reach a lot of places now. Some are optional, and don't involve the main storyline, and others might trigger the appearance of a very challenging optional boss, so those are best left until later. One thing to be really careful about if you don't want to be forced to continue with the story before you're ready. DO NOT fly over the desert in the northwest continent as you risk getting blasted with a cannon, and losing the ship, although it's not a game over. * Duster is the most obvious place to visit. It's a tiny island at the north of Amur, all alone in the middle of the map. * Replito is a lot further off, at the northwest tip of the northwest continent. You'll find summons magic here, and some useful items. * West coast of NE continent - Chocobo Woods and a pond (Enemies : Dracrocotta, Vulcan, Black Flan, Hellgaroo) * Return to the Floating Continent which is situated at the far southwest. =============================================================================== 31. Duster is the home of Geomancers and Bards. You'll find some handy shops and a couple of free items. The item shop is inside the Inn as usual, and the equipment shops are to the left of the Inn. The weapon shops sells lots of harps for the Bard, which would cost you a pretty penny if you purchased them all. I decided to wait on the Bard for now. It's worth buying a Feathered Hat if nothing else, as this can be equipped by every class, and Rune Bracers give more protection for mages. Don't buy the Lamia Harp as you'll find a free one in a later dungeon. ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Hi-Potion | 600 | Restores 500 HP Gold Needle | 100 | Removes petrification Maiden's Kiss | 100 | Removes toad Echo Herbs | 100 | Removes silence Mallet | 100 | Shrinks and unshrinks target Eye Drops | 40 | Removes blind Antidote | 80 | Removes poison Gysahl Greens | 150 | It could be used to attract something... ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- WEAPON SHOP | Cost | Effect | Notes ----------------------+--------+----------+----------------------------------- Diamond Bell | 4500 | +42 ATK | - Madhura Harp | 10000 | +60 ATK | - Loki Harp | 10000 | +60 ATK | - Lamia Harp | 10000 | +60 ATK | Inflicts confusion Dream Harp | 10000 | +60 ATK | Inflicts sleep ----------------------+--------+----------+------------------------------------ ARMOUR SHOP | Cost | Effect | Notes ----------------------+--------+----------+------------------------------------ Gaia Vest | 7500 | +35 DEF | - Bard Vest | 5500 | +32 DEF | - Feathered Hat | 6000 | +10 DEF | - Rune Bracers | 5000 | +11 DEF | Protects from some status ailments ______________________|________|_______________________________________________ Chat to the man outside the Inn to find out that the Dalg continent to the south will blow away anything that comes near. You might have already discovered this when exploring as the ship will veer away from the continent if you get too close. You'll get a hint about a better airship in Saronia. The town is populated by geomancers who'll try to convince you to try out this job, and bards who will make you wonder if your game has frozen as they pause before and after telling you something profound. Two of them mention Bahamut, and another inhabitant speaks of the unique Dark Blade sword. All in all this is a great place for hints. The Moogle is behind the Inn and might have some more letters for you. Walk up behind the house at the right of the inn and zoom in on the grass at the top right corner of the area. You'll find an [EARTHEN DRUMS], a battle item that makes an earthquake. (It's to the right of the bard who squawks about Chocobos.) Walk up the left side of the trees behind the arms shop, and use zoom again to see another sparkle at the upper left corner of the grass where you'll pick up a second [EARTHEN DRUMS]. (The nearby bard talks about a sound when you get items. I thought they were going to mention the sound of one hand clapping or deliver a haiku, but maybe that was the idea!) It's all very enigmatic. =============================================================================== 32. It's only worth while buying all these summons spells IF you intend to use them! At the moment only the Evoker job can summon anything, but later on you'll get the Summoner and Sage and have more cash to buy them. They are learned in the same way as normal magic so if you use more than one job you'll need multiple summons. The locals will tell you about Bahamut and Leviathan which might whet your appetite for a challenge, and the chap at the north of the village gives a hint about fjords to the south, but I'll save that information for later. ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- ITEM SHOP | Cost | Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Hi-Potion | 600 | Restores 500 HP Gold Needle | 100 | Removes petrification Echo Herbs | 100 | Removes silence Eye Drops | 40 | Removes blind Antidote | 80 | Removes poison Ottershroom | 2000 | Teleports party out of dungeons Gysahl Greens | 150 | It could be used to attract something... You can do the same thing over to the right of the town, behind the pond. With the close-up view, walk to the right, through the trees, and down where you'll meet a man called Gulgan. Investigate the tree to his left for a [PHOENIX DOWN]. You'll spot a house with a blue roof set back in the trees. Walk around to the back of that house and you'll enter a secret doorway and find yourself inside. There's a secret passage through the right wall of the first room that leads to a small room with a treasure chest containing an [ELIXIR]. Enter the second room through an obscured doorway in the lower wall of the first room. A green-robed man gives a hint about the treasures to be found in a cave underneath the triangular shaped island (at the south east corner of the world map.) Of course, you need to find a way to dive beneath the sea to find it. All in good time! If you plan to use an Evoker, buy all the summons and equip them to the magic menu for that person. Use the special command "summon" to call one. You might have to remove any other magic to allow room for the summons. Depending on your magic levels you'll get multiple uses of each summons. =============================================================================== 33. Talk to them if you wish, but if you enter the building you'll be up against three guards who won't let you pass. For now, leave the castle and explore the area. It's a walled enclosure populated with enemies and you cannot leave to the world map, but you can save your game. Back to the start, head over the bridge and walk to the right, and up, to find a wooden door. Go inside a room with bookshelves and speak to the red clothed man. He'll summon a Fat Chocobo! You can store items with the Chocobo and retrieve any you left. Walk through the hidden passage at the right side of the room, into the darkness. It goes up, left, down and left, basically taking you around the outer wall of the house, and then to a room at the far left. In here you'll find 11 treasure chests! You'll acquire [GYSAHLL GREENS x11]. You don't need to do this bit as there's nothing to find, and all you'll get is some information. From the entrance, head left to find a closed Armour Shop although the orange haired man nearby suggests that a weapon shop has defied the king's orders to close. From here, walk up and left, crossing bridges to reach the Wellspring house. If you walk down the outer narrow path an old man will ask about a 10 year old boy. Return to the entrance again, and walk straight ahead, over two bridges to the back of the town where you'll find a tavern. Inside you'll be greeted with a scene and a battle with three Gold Knights. Nothing difficult about that, and afterwards you'll acquire a new ally: Prince Alus! Touch the speech box to talk to him and get a little more information about his situation. Return to talk to the robed man at the end of the narrow path and he'll give you a free [WIND SPEAR]. You can get another free piece of kit from the orange-robed old guy on the island in the middle of the town. The minor drawback is that he's standing on a tiny island. But you can reach that by going down steps at the lower right of the town, or at the lower left, in front of the armour shop. There's a second weapon shop that's closed and the locals will talk about a powerful knight in Saronia, and mention the name of Garuda. Zoom in on the group of three trees below the closed weapon shop, and you'll see a sparkle on the south tree. You'll find a valuable [ELIXIR]. One of the two magic shops sell things you've seen before, apart from the new Blizzaga spell, and the other has some tasty new level 5 magic, but they are closed for the time being. The item shop inside the Inn sells the Ottershroom for the first time, and, although expensive, it's a valuable stand-by in case you ever need to escape from a dungeon and don't have access to the Teleport spell. Leave that for a moment and head to the upper right of the town to pick up a Chocobo for a quick tour of the whole area without having to fight! That's all you'll find here, although the locals will give some fighting advice - spears and lances are effective against flying enemies. Maybe it's time to change jobs to a spear/lance wielder if you haven't already done so. I wasn't that keen on the Viking as they are very slow to act, and changed to a Dragoon, because I like jumping, although normal battles are over too fast for it to be a useful skill. However, you'll soon realise that this job is the one that you're being pushed towards, with all the free equipment you've obtained. Take the hint! =============================================================================== 34. Climb five floors of the tower, fighting the fun enemies, although what a Sand Worm is doing in a stone tower I've no idea... It might afflict someone with Blind status that requires healing after the battle. The encounter rate is quite low and I only met two groups on the way to the top. Take out the Sorceror as fast as possible in case it casts Fira on one, which might kill someone outright. The Hellgaroo also casts magic, Blizzara, and hope it's on the whole team and not one person. The Catoblepas and Needle Monkey might cause poison status which needs to be healed or it persists. Don't bother to search for anything hidden or for treasure chests because there's nothing at all. When you reach the sixth floor you'll be at the top of the tower. Walk right to find a room with six chests, starting at the top and going around clockwise, they contain: [DRAGON MAIL], [PHOENIX DOWN], [DRAGON HELM], [THUNDER SPEAR], [THUNDER SPEAR] (yes, a another one so you can equip two!), [DRAGON HELM]. It's the same deal in the room to the left of the stairs, with another six chests to open. Starting at the top, going clockwise again: [DRAGON MAIL], [DRAGON MAIL], [DRAGON HELM], [THUNDER SPEAR], [PHOENIX DOWN], [DRAGON HELM]. Now that you've obtained all this Dragoon equipment change two party members to Dragoons and fight inside the tower to complete the transfer of jobs. =============================================================================== 35. SARONIA CASTLE ...................................................... *W35 =============================================================================== TASK : Enter the castle and defeat the boss. Acquire the Nautilus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Northwest continent, inside the Saronia compound Services : None Items [20] : Ice Rod, Rusty Mail, Medusa Arrow, Dragon Hammer, Main Gauche, Tome Of Fire, Tome Of Ice, Golem Staff, Scholar Hat, Boomerang, Selene Bow, Tome Of Light, Rusty Mail, Viking Helm, Earthen Bell, Dragon Helm, Gaia Vest, Viking Mail, Phoenix Down x2 Wellspring : No Special! : Nautilus airship Recommended Level : 26/27 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAVE YOUR GAME!! Before entering the castle with Alus fight enough battles to complete the transfer for any new jobs. It's faster to find enemies to fight inside the Dragon Spire. Use at least two Dragoons, since you'll have enough equipment for them both. In fact you could even field three of them. Equip the two dragoons with two spears each, as well as all the Dragon armour. You should have found the Wind Spear, and bought another, recalling advice about effective weapons for flying enemies, and the fact that Aero magic is effective against birds. Consider a team with two Dragoons and a White Mage, with one other person fulfilling a job that has a decent level of expertise. Although you'll rest for the night after entering the castle this DOES NOT RESTORE HEALTH! Sleep at the inn in NW or NE Saronia and check your stock of Hi-Potions. Save your game! Vital, because you might not succeed at these relatively low levels. On my first attempt at level 25 it was a bit of a wake-up call as everything else had been plain sailing up to this point. Approach the castle gate with Alus and you'll be allowed through, and a boss fight follows in quick succession. My team consisted of a Monk/Job Level 18, Dragoon x2/Job Level 2, White Mage/Job Level 35. A Knight might be preferable to a Monk for his ability to protect a damaged ally,.because if the mage dies you've had it. Raising the Job level of the two Dragoons will make things very much easier as they will do much more damage to Garuda, but you can beat him without doing it, with a little luck. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - GARUDA | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 28 | 10000 | 57 | 29 | 8800 | 10200 | Wind | Csstle Saronia |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Hi-Potion 3 - Hi-Potion 4 - Hi-Potion | | 5 - Hi-Potion 6 - Hi-Potion 7 - Hi-Potion 8 - Phoenix Down | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 26 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Okay, so no surprises here, as we knew it was a flying bird called Garuda from the well-informed Saronians. Garuda is powerful and uses Lightning magic on the whole party as well as physical attacks, although those don't hurt too much, doing around 150 HP damage. He has two turns on each round, although he doesn't cast the magic twice on one round. If he did, that would be instant death for everyone... If you're using the Dragoons have them jump so they don't get damaged, and attack with double spears. Cast Aero with a White Mage when you're not using Cura spells, and use other non-elemental attacks from your other fighter. The real difficulty in this battle is not damaging him, but not getting killed from the crushing Lightning magic. This reduces everyone's HP by around 300-500 HP, leaving them all in the yellow danger zone, apart from the jumping Dragoons. The higher anyone's Magic Defence stat, the less damage this attack will do, but the Dragoon has low M.Def, so their only hope of escaping unharmed is if they are in the air. And your only hope of survival is that he doesn't do this attack twice in a row: but he will. Your best protection might be to use Cura on every round. Aero does around 400-500 damage to Garuda, but it's better to keep everyone healthy and avoid deaths. One suggestion is to use a Bacchus's Cider item on the White Mage at the start of the battle to make sure they always have the first turn so they can heal everyone. With a White Mage at Job level 32-35, they don't heal for enough so you'll also need to use Hi-Potions to supplement Cura, because if Garuda uses magic again on the next turn, the party won't have high enough HP to sustain the damage. Once the team gets badly damaged it's going to be downhill from then on, and you won't be able to recover fast enough to survive. You could try using a Phoenix Down and Elixir to fully heal someone, or fight more battles in the Tower to raise levels higher, both overall and for the jobs. This was the first time I had a total defeat and I was grateful for the fact that there wasn't a long dungeon to go through first! Even if the rest of the team is dead, so long as you have one Dragoon left you can jump again and might kill Garuda, so don't give up! o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o After the battle the team is at full health and inside the castle bedroom. Exit to the south and leave the castle to save your game. Re-enter the compound and wander around chatting to the mages in the left tower room to find out where to go next, and talk to the engineers in the right side tower room to find out how to travel! Yes, the [NAUTILUS] is yours. Back inside the bedroom, go up the stairs and up again to reach the King's chamber and talk to King Alus. He'll officially tell you to take all his stuff! You'll hear about quite a few other possibilities by talking to everyone. The engineers are thinking about a ship that goes underwater but the expert is missing... you're told about a the Temple of Time and Noah's Flute. There's an undersea temple south of Saronia, between two horns. Of more immediate use is a secret passage to the treasure room on the first floor of this tower. Return to the bedroom and check the top of the right wall, in the middle. Yes, that not so obvious discolouration marks the start of that secret passage. Walk through, going straight, until you reach some stairs down to the treasure room. Open 12 chests, from top to bottom and left to right: [ICE ROD], [RUSTY MAIL], [MEDUSA ARROW], [DRAGON HAMMER], [MAIN GAUCHE], [TOME OF FIRE], [TOME OF ICE], [GOLEM STAFF], [SCHOLAR HAT], [BOOMERANG], [SELENE BOW], [TOME OF LIGHT] Continue down to a lower floor and keep walking down the stairs until you reach en empty room. There's another secret passage through the wall at the right. Walk straight through to the final room, with 6 more treasure chests. Again, from the top, starting at the left, you'll acquire: [RUSTY MAIL], [VIKING HELM], [EARTHEN BELL], [DRAGON HELM], [GAIA VEST], and [VIKING MAIL]. Back upstairs, re-enter the left tower with the mages and check the wall near the top right corner at the right for another secret passage. Walk right, through the darkness, then down the stairs into a small room. There's another hidden passage through the wall at the left, close to the stairs. This takes you up and around the room and back inside at the right side of the adjacent room. Descend the stairs until you reach a long narrow room. Two chests are found at the lower left, and a helpful servant who says that the next part of the passage is closed. But you can see a room at the left, even thought you cannot access it. For now, open the two treasure chests to obtain [PHOENIX DOWN] and [PHOENIX DOWN]. This generosity made me forgive the lack of juicy drops from beaten bosses. Teleport out for a quick exit. -------------------------- SHIPPING OUT AND SHOPPING! -------------------------- Walk back outside and you'll arrive inside the white area just in front of the castle, and next to a golden ship. Enter, and fly away. Or go and do some shopping for magic now that the shops are all open in the various townships. Note that the Nautilus cannot cross over the mountains, and cannot land on water. Definitely buy the better Curaga magic, Protect, and Raise from the magic shop in NE Saronia. At long last you don't have to use Phoenix Downs if someone is knocked out. If you buy all the magic at the left shop in NW Saronia it's gonna cost a lot: 30,000 Gil to be precise. Buying the better rods as well was too expensive for me, so, unless you've been selling off stuff (don't forget about those Golden Swords!) or fighting a lot of battles, you won't be able to buy everything. Make a point to get the valuable Rune Staff as this allow you to cast Erase to remove buffs on bosses, and will be an essential piece of kit for later in the game. The locals will have new things to say, at least, in the NE area, and you can access the Library in the NW area. There's no-one to talk to but lots of books to read! Check each shelf for an extract from various books. although one or two don't reveal anything. Only the 6 larger shelves facing you have books to read. The ones at the left give more information about Desch and his father, and the second row at the left tells you how to get past those statues: you need the four fangs. The top left shelf tells of the secret of the Dark Blade Way in the mountains west of Saronia. The others have stuff about dark and light and transportation. By the way, there's a Chocobo Woods outside the compound if you walk and canoe due west from the south wall. It's inside the woods between the start of a second river and a small lake. Walk up between the two, towards the mountains to the west. =============================================================================== 36. Change one of the Dragoons to something else now, preferably a Thief or Mage type job as you'll be running across locked doors and a mini-me section soon. Fly to the southwestern tip of the south continent and make your way through the mountains following the grassy path to a house. As soon as you arrive there's an air battle with two Chimera. At least, that was the first time I encountered air enemies. On the ground you'll find new foes, including Gargoyles. Enter the Manor and meet Doga. He mentions Unei as well as Xande, and he explains their roles in the past and present, after which he joins the party! You're told to go to the Cave of Circle through a secret passage in his room. This is Moogle Manor! The first one you meet before going up the stairs may have some new letters for you. In the next room you'll find masses of them, with helpful information as well as shops. Level 3 or 4 magic should deal with all groups if Doga doesn't kill them first. Use the Thief to steal items. You could stay in here for a while, since Doga is so useful, and you've got that restoration pot nearby. Walk along the narrow path to the first warp circle. Enter it to reach the second path, where there's another warp circle at the end. The third section of path goes up a gentle slope and ends at the third warp circle. That's all there is and it's a short and easy trip. In the next area, walk forwards and Doga will cast a spell to allow the Nautilus to travel underwater! He tells you to go south from Saronia to find the Temple of Time between Cape Twin Horn and find Noah's Lute. You'll use this item to wake up the sleeping Unei. After this Doga goes off to do his own stuff and find the Key to Eureka. It seems there's another ship to discover as well: anything called the Invincible sound good to me! It's not a bad idea to find them all and acquire at least some of the free treasure now, and you can return later to finish them off. * Doga's Village (magic shopping!) * Sunken Cave (lots of treasure) * Saraonia Catacombs (Odin summons) Take care when fighting underwater monsters as they often appear in groups of three. Kagura are weak to lightning and Charybdis are quite tough, especially if they turn up in a group. To continue with the story the next location is the Temple of Time. And oddly, the music restored itself after acquiring the upgraded Nautilus. =============================================================================== 39. DOGA'S VILLAGE (Optional) ........................................... *W39 =============================================================================== TASK : One stop magic shopping! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Underwater from the east point of the southern continent. Services : Magic Shop x6! Items [-] : None Wellspring : No ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You might have noticed a town next to a lake at the east of the south continent of Dalg. It is surrounded with mountains and there is no access from the air. After the events with Doga on the south continent of Dalg, fly back to the south of the continent and then hug the coast, heading northeast past this inaccessible town, until you reach the eastern tip of the land. Dive down here, and you'll see a channel through the rock. Just follow it to a dead end, and return to the surface and you're flying above that pool by the town!. Land on the grass and enter Doga's Village. Talk to the black mage with the bright yellow hat, and they run the magic shop, although it's nothing special, just the same as in NW Saronia. There are more shops at the ends of each bridge. Down the left one you'll find the summons magic, which is the same as that sold at Replito, From here, walk right, to the next mage shop selling level 5 magic, which is the same as the second shop in NW Saronia. Go right from here to find some new very expensive level 7 magic, including the cure-all Esuna and protective Reflect White magic. The next shop, heading to the right again, sells Level 4 magic found at one of the SW Saronia shops. Finally, the shop in the middle area (below the tree) sells level 6 magic, exactly the same as the stuff sold inside Doga's Manor. There's a Moogle too, and this place is handy if you're missing some magic and want a one-stop shopping trip. If the Moogle asks you if you're getting letters from people that's a hint that you need to change the lead character. ----------------------.--------.----------------------------------------------- MAGIC SHOP 1 | Cost | Type and Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Fira | 1500 | Black Lv.3 Deals fire damage Blizzara | 1500 | Black Lv.3 Deals ice damage Thundara | 1500 | Black Lv.3 Deals lightning damage Cura | 1500 | White Lv.3 Restores a large amount of HP Teleport | 1500 | White Lv.3 Teleports party out of dungeons Blindna | 1500 | White Lv.3 Lv.3 Removes blind ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- MAGIC SHOP 2 | Cost | Type and Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Escape | 100 | Summons Lv.1: Summons Chocobo Icen | 7000 | Summons Lv.2: Summons Shiva Spark | 7000 | Summons Lv.2: Summons Ramuh Heatra | 7000 | Summons Lv.2: Summons Ifrit Hyper | 7000 | Summons Lv.2: Summons Titan ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- MAGIC SHOP 3 | Cost | Type and Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Thundaga | 5000 | Black Lv.5 Deals lightning damage Raze | 5000 | Black Lv.5 Causes KO to weak enemies Erase | 5000 | Black Lv.5 Dispels beneficial magic Curaga | 5000 | White Lv.5 Restores a great deal of HP Raise | 5000 | White Lv.5 Revives ally Protect | 5000 | White Lv.5 Increases defence ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- MAGIC SHOP 4 | Cost | Type and Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Quake | 20000 | Black Lv.7 Deals earth damage Breakga | 20000 | Black Lv.7 Inflicts petrification Drain | 20000 | Black Lv.7 Absorbs life Curaja | 20000 | White Lv.7 Restores a massive amount of HP Esuna | 20000 | White Lv.7 Removes all status ailments Reflect | 20000 | White Lv.7 Creates a magic-reflecting barrier ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- MAGIC SHOP 5 | Cost | Type and Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Break | 3000 | Black Lv.4 Inflicts petrification Blizzaga | 3000 | Black Lv.4 Deals ice damage Shade | 3000 | Black Lv.4 Inflicts paralysis Libra | 3000 | White Lv.4 Displays weak points Confuse | 3000 | White Lv.4 Inflicts confusion Silence | 3000 | White Lv.4 Inflicts silence ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- MAGIC SHOP 6 | Cost | Type and Effect ----------------------+--------+----------------------------------------------- Firaga | 10000 | Black Lv.6 Deals fire damage Bio | 10000 | Black Lv.6 Deals non-elemental damage Warp | 10000 | Black Lv.6 Creates rift to another dimension Aeroga | 10000 | White Lv.6 Deals wind damage Stona | 10000 | White Lv.6 Removes petrification Haste | 10000 | White Lv.6 Increases attack speed Curaga | 5000 | White Lv.5 Restores a great deal of HP Raise | 5000 | White Lv.5 Revives ally ______________________|________|_______________________________________________ =============================================================================== 40. SUNKEN CAVE (Optional) .............................................. *W40 =============================================================================== TASK : Acquire lots of treasure! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : On the seabed below the small island at the southeast of the map. Items [15] : Tiger Claws, Chakram, Dual Tomahawk, Ancient Sword, Diamond Shield, Metal Knuckles, Diamond Helm, Cognitome, Air Knife, Diamond Mail, Loki Harp, Diamond Bracers, Phoenix Down, Elixir, Diamond Gloves. [4] Trapped Chests - Trident, Aegis Shield, Reflect Mail, Triton Hammer. Enemies : 115: Dozmare, 116: Sea Witch, 117: Killer Hermit, 118: Ologhai, 119: Kelpie, 120: Aegir Recommended Level: 30-33 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The place I wanted to investigate was that small triangular island at the southeast of the world map, so I dove down and found an entrance on the right side of the undersea rock. Simply move the ship to the hole and you'll enter the Sunken Cave. This isn't necessary for the story, but it's good if you're short of cash (I was down to 5000 Gil) and need some free stuff. The best way to tackle this dungeon is to raid it for all the treasure up to the end of the third floor and then leave. Return and charge straight through to the end to deal with the four guardians of the special treasure. There are lots of new nice enemies in here too, most of which are weak to Lightning magic and have around 1600 HP. However, you will encounter two enemies that are quite challenging. The Peryton has over 9000 HP and the Zombie Dragon has 11000 HP so treat those like bosses. I'll say more when I get to them. A Dragoon with double Lightning Spears is a good choice for one party member. The flying Dozmare is the exception to the Lightning rule, and is weak to wind as I'll sure you know by now. Enemies tend to appear in groups of three and their critical attacks might do around 400-500 damage so it's quite easy to have someone die if they are targeted twice. For this, you'll need Raise and the better curative and attack magic. The encounter rate is high too, so having a Thief on the team to enable you to attempt to flee without compromising defence is a good plan, at least, if you come here at relatively low levels. I was at level 30, which is really too low so I targeted one enemy at a time using lower level magic rather than attempting to take them all out at once. It's not that easy but you'll be well rewarded with all the treasure you'll find, and it's going to make your team much stronger. My team consisted of a Black Mage, Thief, White Mage and Evoker who was very handy, using the Whirlpool terrain magic that has a good chance of instantly killing at least one enemy. Cave 1 Walk down the right side of the cave and over the wooden bridge to the left. Keep going quite a distance to find the stairs down to the next cavern. Cave 2 Head to the right of the cave first, staying close to the outer wall and you'll find a chest a bit further down this side of the cave, close to the pool. It contains a [TIGER CLAWS] weapon. Return to the stairs, and go to the upper left to find a treasure chest with a [CHAKRAM} boomerang type weapon that a Thief can equip. There's another chest at the lower left of the cave with a [DUAL TOMAHWAK]. The stairs to the third floor are below the larger pool at the lower right corner of the cavern so just walk right, keeping close to the lower wall to reach them. Cave 3 This cave has tons of treasure, so let's be orderly about it! First of all, walk straight down, over two bridges, and head to the left to open the first one, giving you an [ANCIENT SWORD]. Go over the third bridge to discover a nice hoard of four chests. From left to right they contain: [DIAMOND SHIELD], [METAL KNUCKLES], [DIAMOND HELM] and [COGNITOME]. Head back over two bridges and go left, over another bridge. Open the chest near the bridge for an [AIR KNIFE]. Open three more chests on this platform. From right to left they contain [DIAMOND MAIL], [LOKI HARP] and [DIAMOND BRACERS]. Walk down, over the next bridge and get a [PHOENIX DOWN] from the upper left chest, and an [ELIXIR] and [DIAMOND GLOVES] from the two below the hidden exit. You'll see a small pointy rock below the single chest and the hidden passage lies to the left of this. Cave 4 Inside this small cavern are four more chests: and it looks as if you can just lift the contents and high tail it out of there, but not so fast! Each chest is a trap and is guarded by a different powerful monster. They are not really bosses, just ordinary enemies, placed in a special situation. The location listed in the table is where they appear in numbers. You can find the Aegis Shield and Reflect Mail more easily elsewhere if you don't want to bother with it all but the shield is valuable because it protects from all status effects. That means a Thief, Dragoon and White Mage will be a good team. My high level Thief (Job Level 58) was equipped with the Air Knife and Chakram and killed the Peryton on the first turn with an impressive critical attack! Heal up after the battle and open the next chest. Upper right chest - [AEGIS SHIELD] o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - ZOMBIE DRAGON | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 41 | 11000 | 90 | 27 | 15000 | 2880 | Light | Ancient Ruins |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Hi-Potion 3 - Hi-Potion 4 - Hi-Potion | | 5 - Hi-Potion 6 - Hi-Potion 7 - Hi-Potion 8 - Phoenix Down | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 33 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Anything called a zombie something in a Final Fantasy game is good news. You can kill with kindness! In other words, they are weak to healing magic. A Hi-Potion will damage them for 500 HP and a Phoenix Down or Raise spell will kill them. That's the cheap way to success! Or just use your best Curaga spells and any Light/Holy attacks if you don't want to waste a valuable Phoenix Down. Lower left chest - [REFLECT MAIL] o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - DEATH CLAW | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 38 | 3800 | 85 | 26 | 7500 | 680 | None | Cave of Shadows |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Black Hole 3 - Lilith's Kiss 4 - Raven's Yawn | | 5 - Shining Curtain 6 - Shell Breaker 7 - Black Musk 8 - Chocobo's Wrath | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 30 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Really simple stuff as this "boss" has about the same HP as enemies you've been fighting here and elsewhere. Lower right chest - [TRITON HAMMER] o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - EATER | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 35 | 2700 | 75 | 25 | 1020 | 945 | DarkBlade | Falgabard: Cave | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Hi-Potion 2 - Hi-Potion 3 - Hi-Potion 4 - Hi-Potion | | 5 - Hi-Potion 6 - Hi-Potion 7 - Hi-Potion 8 - Phoenix Down | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 30 | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Even easier, at least, if you kill it outright, or use any kind of magic. This enemy is weak to attacks from the Dark Blade job's weapons. If you don't have this class yet, or don't have anyone using it, then DON'T attack with ordinary weapons because it will divide, and create a clone of itself. It can do this again and again, although the maximum number of enemies is three, so there's some restriction. Teleport out, save your game, and float back to the surface. =============================================================================== 41. SARONIA CATACOMBS (Optional) ........................................ *W41 =============================================================================== TASK : Obtain Odin summons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Cave accessed from the seabed, south from the Saronia compound. Items [14] : Golem Staff, Rune Bell, Aegis Shield, Reflect Mail, Heavy Lance, Phoenix Down x4, Elixir x4, Catastro Level 6 Summons. Wellspring : None Enemies : 121: Kyklops, 122: Boss Troll, 123: Fachan, 124: Cenchos, 125: Balor STEAL/DROP : Gungnir ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fly to the Saronia compound in the northwest continent, and dive down near the south wall, to the east of the shallow channels. You'll end up next to a dark opening in the north rock wall. Go inside the Catacombs, a watery sewer type place. Only the Cenchos (4000 HP) has a weakness to lightning and the rest of the enemies have no weakness at all, but only have around 1600 HP. Balor uses the Blizzara spell on the team, but despite the its fearsome appearance it won't hurt you too much. It's a good plan to come here as soon as possible to get the treasure and return later to fight the boss. Floors 1 and 2 Follow the only paved path through the first two rooms. Floor 3 At the third room you arrive at a T junction. Turn right, and up some steps to access a chest at the left containing a [GOLEM STAFF]. Help yourself to the contents of another two chests just to the right, with a [RUNE BELL] in the left chest, and an [AEGIS SHIELD] in the right. It's worth while coming in here early on just for this shield as it protects against ALL status ailments. Return to the T junction and go left and up the steps. You'll find a treasure chest on the landing after the steps, with the [REFLECT MAIL]. Continue going left, and up, and right, past the exit stairs, to find another chest with a [HEAVY LANCE]. Floor 4 Inside the next room, walk straight up, next to the right wall, to find a hidden passage in the upper right corner. Go through the darkness to a small side room with 8 treasure chests. The lower four contains [PHOENIX DOWN x4] but you have to fight a mini=boss monster as soon as you open one! This is just an ordinary Cenchos that you've probably already defeated. Just be aware that it gets two turns on each round and you'll have to fight one for each treasure chest you open. The top row contains [ELIXIR x4] and again, there's a monster trap in each one. This is an Ouroboros that only has around 2600 HP and is also weak to lightning. I left after this, not yet ready to face Odin at Level 34. He has the unique weapon, Gungir, that can be stolen by a Thief, but you need a high job level to manage this, and even then there's only a very small chance of obtaining it, either by the thief or from him dropping it. According to the Brady guide you need a Thief job level of at least 71 to have a good chance of stealing this weapon. Now, at over Level 14 each action gives you 18 job points so that would be 6 actions in one battle to get 1 job level. Anyway that's what I did but I waited until near the end of the game to do it, when the Thief already had a job level of 62, and just kept stealing stuff to raise job levels. Floor 5 Odin awaits when you enter this room, and you still have a chance to check health and equipment. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | B O S S - ODIN | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | LV | HP | ATK | DEF | EXP | GIL | WEAK | LOCATION | |----+-------+-----+-----+-------+-------+-------------+----------------------| | 40 | 31000 | 81 | 35 | 20000 | 16800 | None | Saronia Catacombs | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DROPS (8% chance overall) | | 1 - Elixir 2 - Elixir 3 - Gungnir 4 - Gungnir | | 5 - None 6 - None 7 - None 8 - None | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Recommended Level: 40 (Thief Job Level 71) | o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o With a Thief job level of 72 I stole the weapon on the second attempt. Just keep trying it and don't kill him until you have the weapon! Of course, there's a minor drawback to that strategy because he will use a powerful Zantetsuken move that causes around 1000 HP damage to everyone: maybe more than that if your armour isn't good, or you were silly enough to let a mage fight on the front row. He gets two attacks on each round so that move, plus a physical strike, could kill anyone outright. His usual physical attack isn't too bad on its own, but if he targets the same person twice that could be troublesome. If you have to wait for the Thief to steal, have the rest of the team guard, and a mage use Protect and Haste. A Dragoon is helpful in this battle when you're ready to attack as you can keep them in the air for a turn, as is a Viking, who can wear two shields, stand on the back row and Provoke. o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o After the battle you'll obtain the Level 6 summon spell, [CATASTRO] that summons Odin. And of course, you'll have the [GUNGNIR] weapon too! (By the way, you're now inside that room you could see from inside Saronia Castle, and you can catch a glimpse of the treasure chest you opened if you look to the right.) Teleport time now! Save your game and fly off to the next destination with a job well done, and with full health. =============================================================================== 42. TEMPLE OF TIME ...................................................... *W42 =============================================================================== TASK : Dive underwater and explore the temple to acquire Noah's Lute. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : Underwater, south of the Saronia continent. Items [10] : Diamond Helm, Diamond Bracers, Defender, Diamond Mail, Lamia Harp, Behemoth Knife, Blood Lance, Protect Ring, Diamond Gloves, Diamond Shield, Noah's Lute Wellspring : No Enemies : 126: Dira, 127: Chimera Mage, 128: King Lizard, 129: Pterodactyl, 130: Wyvern, 131: Behemoth, 132: King Seahorse, 133: Dragon Recommended Level: 32/34 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eventually you'll have to come to the Temple of Time to continue with the main game. Cape Twin Horn is the area at the south of the Saronia continent, as Doga told you. Fly to the southern tip of that northwestern continent and dive down inside the sea that's half circled with two "horns" of land. You'll be outside a temple like building on the sea bed. Move towards it and you'll enter on foot. Although most enemies have around 1500 HP the Dira fairy type winged enemy has a whopping 5000 and the Behemoth has 12500! Fortunately she seems to appear alone and won't be too hard to defeat, although he's a bit trickier. One jump from a Dragoon should put paid to her with Wind Spears, and a Thief with a high job level will take her out with one attack. Most enemies in here are weak to Wind, with the Seahorse and Lizard weak to lightning. One way to handle this dungeon is to make two trips, using a Thief on the first run through and unlocking all the doors to obtain all the treasure. Teleport out and then heal up and return with your strongest party with a couple of Magic Keys to open the essential doors. Make sure you either have a White Mage OR the Ottershroom item to escape from the dungeon because there's no boss battle and no full healing afterwards! I went in with a party at Level 33 consisting of a Thief, White Mage, Geomancer and Black Mage, although a Dragoon, Viking or any other physical attacker would be a great alternative to the Black Mage who has really reached their sell-by date at this point. Floor 1 Walk down, and turn left at the first junction to find the first locked door in the upper wall. Use a Magic Key or Thief ability to unlock it after touching the ! mark that appears. The Thief must be the leading character to use the skill. Inside this room, walk around the wall to the right, and go up to find the single treasure chest that contains a [DIAMOND HELM]. Exit the room and walk left until you find a second locked door in the upper wall. Inside the room walk right and up to find a chest with [DIAMOND BRACERS]. Leave this room and walk back to the right wall of the entrance room. From the wall, turn down until you reach the bottom wall and then, go left and keep going until you find some steps that lead down into the water. Stay close to the right side of the pool and walk up, to climb the next steps at your right. From here, walk right, to find the stairs down to the next floor. Floor 2 This is a small room and easy to find the way! Walk to the right, past the stairs, to reach the single treasure chest that has a [DEFENDER] sword. This is very handy because it can be used as an item to cast the Protect spell. Return to descend the stairs. Floor 3 This is another large floor with locked doors and stuff to pinch. You start at the left and should walk right, past the steps that lead into the water to find the first door in the lower right section. Unlock the door and go right to find a chest with the [DIAMOND MAIL]. Back at the main floor, go left and down the steps into the water. Wade up to the top left corner to find another locked door. Inside are two treasure chests with the left one having yet another contribution to the diamond gear with [DIAMOND GLOVES] and the right containing a [BEHEMOTH KNIFE]. If you're using a Thief, this knife, together with the Chakram (or Air knife if you've been following this walkthrough) will give them much higher attack power. Leave this room and go back through the water to the right. The final door is at the top right of the floor. Simply walk right through the room to find the stairs down to the next floor. Floor 4 You arrive at the upper side of a large room, having descended again and this is where I encountered the Behemoth for the first time. He's bloody big and blue! He has no weakness so use your very best, most powerful attacks. Guard if you must because his physical attack is very strong and two on one weaker character will destroy them. In fact, just one critical attack can do that. I found that the dragoon's jump attack was no use at all, only doing around 600 HP damage to him (he has high defence) and a Black Mage's magic isn't going to be much better. You'll also encounter the somewhat elusive Dragon enemy on this floor. Hang around if you want to complete the bestiary as this is the only place where it appears. Now, there's a secret passage in this room. Turn to the right when you enter, and walk BEHIND the waterfall along a narrow path next to the north wall, to the right side of the room. You'll pass through the wall into darkness. Continue and go down the long staircase to access three treasure chests at the left side of the pool at the bottom. The left most one contains [BLOOD LANCE], the middle one has [PROTECT RING[ and the right one has the [LAMIA HARP]. Back in the large room continue down the sequence of three sets of steps and go through the water back onto the path. Turn left at the bottom and unlock the door to a small room with a chest that contains a [DIAMOND SHIELD]. The final door is also locked and is at the lower right side of the area. Go inside and walk up to check the small plinth to acquire [NOAH'S LUTE]. There's no boss battle. Walk all the way back out of here... Not really, this is what the Teleport spell is for so cast it now if you have a Level 3 magic spell left, or use an OtterShroom item. You will have found one already and I did tell you to buy an extra one in case of emergencies so I hope you have one spare! ----------------------- JOBS CHANGE AND LETTERS ----------------------- One you're back on dry land do some change in jobs so you can make use of all the new treasure and benefit from spending the additional Gil you'll have earned. A Bard is a good one to try out: go to Duster to buy all the Harps you need. The Sing command isn't available unless you equip a Harp and you cannot equip both a harp and a knife because a harp is a two-handed weapon. You need to buy the harps you don't already own and exchange them during a battle for their different effects. The Bard is really a fantastic job for the end game and it's one I like to start using now to raise job levels high. You could also start using the Evoker since you'll need some effective magic in the next location and should be able to afford to buy some summons from Replito, or just hang on to a Black Mage for now. At this point you will get the first letter from the 4 Old Men and if you put Arc in the lead position you'll get a letter from Alus. =============================================================================== 43. UNEI'S SHRINE ....................................................... *W43 =============================================================================== TASK : Use Noah's Lute to awaken Unei and receive another Fang. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location : West from Saronia, inside a mountain cave. Items [1] : Fang of Life Wellspring : No Enemies : None ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fly to the south of Saronia and hug the coastline, heading in a southwesterly direction until you can fly west over some trees and along a narrow strip of grass. You'll find a mountain with a cave opening. Use your Sight magic or a Gnomish Bread to see the precise location if you're not sure as it won't appear on the normal map. There's also an inaccessible town location behind the mountains. Enter the cave to find a sleeping woman. (Talk to the red parrot on the nearby perch and it will explain. It seems she won't wake up, ever. If you come here before finding a certain item, that's all that will happen.) Once you've obtained Noah's Lute touch the ! mark that appears and she wakes up. Unei tells you to go to the Ancient Ruins to the north to get the Invincible Ship and she joins the party. She also gives you the [FANG OF FIRE], the third fang. Touch the speech bubble to get more story from Unei. With Unei in tow you could complete the optional stuff, defeating Odin for example. She uses Holy magic and might cast Haste on the party. =============================================================================== X.
