Revenge of the Handhelds
In our last newsletter, we talked about the ongoing three-sided battle for console supremacy between the PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360. But there's a smaller, quieter, and just as important battle going on in the background, seemingly forgotten by all but those of us who consider ourselves "hard core" gamers. The big boys can continue to slug away at each other, but want to know who the real top dog in video game hardware sales is these days? According to NPD Group's recent report of February video game sales figures, Nintendo DS sold over 150,000 more units than its closest competitor, it's big brother the Wii. The PSP was 5th on the list, beaten out by the DS, Wii, PS2, and Xbox 360. Close behind the PSP was the reliable Game Boy Advance, which even beat out the PS3. Handhelds are far more popular, easier to get your hands on, less expensive, and far easier to toss in your backpack than a PS3 with a plasma screen. It just goes to show that usability, game play, game selection, and portability are just as important as they ever were!
