Nonetheless, information gathered from the mission was leaked to the press and the public's most dreaded suspicions were confirmed. Extra- terrestrial mutants from the BYDO Empire were consolidating their forces and would soon launch an all-out attack on Earth. Now it's up to you to stop this threat. You must lead an attack on the BYDO Empire to destroy El Supremo and his five warlords. Launching a full-scale attack with Battlecruisers would be impossible. The Empire's sensors would detect our ships long before a single shot could be fired, and any chance for a surprise attack would be lost. The only chance is for a lone R-Type fighter to penetrate the Empire's defenses undetected and destroy El Supremo. The R-Type is constructed of a rare metal alloy that renders it invisible to BYDO sensors and has the speed and maneuverability to take on anything the BYDO can throw at it. Good luck! R-Type II Although your first mission against the BYDO Empire was an apparent success, the latest deep-space probes have revealed a secret BYDO base. It seems the Empire has been in seclusion since its base was destroyed, stockpiling weapons and resources. Once more, the Earth is under threat of attack, and the World Government is asking for your help...again! ======================================================================= 3) CONTROLS ======================================================================= This section explains the controls and the Rapid-Fire functions. -------------- Basic Controls -------------- Control Pad: - Moves ship A Button: - Launches Power Pod - Brings back Power Pod after you detach it B Button: - Fires your ship's basic weapon - Fires Power Pod's weapon Start: - Pauses/Resumes the game Select: - Access the Options from the game menu ------------- Rapid Fire #1 ------------- A Button: - Fires your ship's basic weapon B Button: - Press, then hold for Rapid Fire Start: - Pauses/Resumes the game Select: - Launches Power Pod - Brings back Power Pod after you detach it ------------- Rapid Fire #2 ------------- A Button: - Launches Power Pod - Brings back Power Pod after you detach it B Button: - When the Power Pod is detached, press and then hold for Rapid Fire - When the Power Pod is attached, tap and then hold for Rapid Fire ======================================================================= 4) ITEMS ======================================================================= This section tells you what power-ups you can find and what they do. NOTE: Collect 3 of the same weapon upgrade to get the max. power from that weapon. ------- Weapons ------- Power Pod: You get the Power Pod from collecting one of three items below this. The pod itself can be very powerful if you can use it correctly. There are 3 different "levels" for a Pod. #1 - Super Laser: This can be useful if you can aim it correctly. This weapon fires 2 lasers that bounce around the screen for short period of time. #2 - Bubble Beam: Fires a multi-colored beam. It is powerful, but it only fires straight in front of your ship. #3 - Fire Chain: Very useful for taking out ground units. It launches 2 chains of fire up and down, and these 2 chains will move along the ground/ceiling. ----------- Misc. Items ----------- S - Speed: Increases the R-Type's speed and maneuverability. I would only collect some of this item because it might become somewhat difficult to move if it goes too fast. Plasmo: A small ball will appear near your ship. It will destroy enemies like the Power Pod does. The ball doesn't move quite as fast as your ship, so don't move too fast if you want protection. You can have up to 2 Plasmos protecting you. Missile: This let's your R-Type ship drop bombs on the ground. When it explodes on the ground, the blast will trail along for a small distance. The blast can also go up and down on walls. Like the Fire Chain, use this to take out ground enemies. 1-Up (+1 Icon): Gives you an extra ship. ======================================================================= 5) R-TYPE (B&W) ======================================================================= This section is a walkthrough for the original version of R-Type. NOTE: This walkthrough follows the game on Easy difficulty. ------------ Game Options ------------ Level - Easy / Hard Music - On / Off Sound - On / Off ------- Stage 1 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x2) #2 - Bubble Beam (x2) S - Speed Plasmo An easy stage. For the first part, air enemies will come at you. Just charge up your Beam and fire at a line of enemies to defeat them all. Soon after that, a robot appears. Use the Power Pod you just got to defeat him. Now as soon as you enter the base, there are a bunch of enemies waiting for you. Charge your Beam and launch the Power Pod to get rid of them. Now you'll see a ring. Once you get into the center of it, attack the ball that is different than the other ones to stop them from shooting at you. In the small pathway will be a robot. Since you don't much room to move, stay near the top or the bottom. Then move up or down to dodge the attacks. A little bit after that will be another robot. Beat him, and you're at the boss! ------- Stage 2 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x2) S - Speed This level can be tricky. Large creatures will come out of the floor or ceiling. Use your Power Pod and Beam to destroy them. A little bit after that, a group of really small enemies will fly at you. They aren't a threat so don't worry about them. Then you should see a weird looking flower that releases creatures that look like small Metroids. These enemies are annoying, so dispose of them as quick as you can. Now a snake-like creature will appear, this means that you are near the boss. ------- Stage 3 ------- Power-Ups: #3 - Fire Chain (x2) This is the shortest stage in the game. Get the Fire Chain weapon, and go under the Battlecruiser. Use the weapon to get rid of the gun turrets. When you see the pipes, charge up your Beam to destroy them. It will be too difficult to beat them using regular shots. Right after that the boss will appear! ------- Stage 4 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x2) S - Speed This stage is the hardest one in R-Type. Baldos will appear out of nowhere, but they will always follow a certain pattern. When you reach the part where there's a little opening, go in it. Now go up, right, and down. Position the R-Type under the beam hanging from the ceiling, and you should be able to dodge the enemies. After that, put your ship over the first pole. Now you'll reach the mid-point of the stage. Go up and stay in the hole in the ceiling, and the enemies will pass under you. Now go right, down a bit, and left in the place with the POW Shuttle. After the Baldos from the top passes by you, move between the between the two poles. Another Baldos will pass over you. Now you should be fine for the rest of level if you're careful. ------- Stage 5 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x2) #2 - Bubble Beam S - Speed (x2) Plasmo The first section of this stage is easy. If you collected the Super Laser, it will be useful for taking out enemies hiding in the small pathways. After that part, a piece of junk will be moving through the center of the stage. It's not there for any reason, so just avoid it. The rest of the level is the same as the first section, so it should be a breeze reaching the boss. ------- Stage 6 ------- Power-Ups: #2 - Bubble Beam (x2) S - Speed Nothing much to tell about this level. All you really have to do is fight the enemies that come out of the floor/ceiling, pick up any items, and dodge the small whirlpool things. ======================================================================= 6) R-TYPE (CE) ======================================================================= This section is a walkthrough for the color version of R-Type. NOTE: This walkthrough follows the game on Easy difficulty. ------------ Game Options ------------ Diff - Easy / Hard Music - On / Off Sound - On / Off Fire - Normal / Auto1 / Auto2 Level - Varies on how far you're in this game. ------- Stage 1 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x3) #2 - Bubble Beam (x2) S - Speed Plasmo The first few waves of enemies are easy. Just charge up your Beam and fire it at a line of enemies. When you first reach the inside of the building, use the Power Pod to defeat the enemies waiting for you. If you don't destroy them early enough, they will follow you. At the ring of spheres, attack the red and green one. Then all of them turn gray and stop shooting at you. The rest of the way shouldn't be a problem. ------- Stage 2 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x2) #3 - Fire Chain S - Speed You should still have the Super Laser or the Bubble Beam, so use that to take out the large enemies. If you don't have one of them, a charged Beam shot will do. Be sure to take out the flower enemies because the creatures that come out will follow you around for a bit. ------- Stage 3 ------- Power-Ups: #3 - Fire Chain (x2) Use the Fire Chain weapon to take out all of the cannons. When you reach the jet things make sure you use charged Beam shots to destroy them. It's very difficult if you use single shots. ------- Stage 4 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x3) S - Speed This stage is just as difficult as the regular version. So look at the strategy for this stage in the "R-Type (B&W)" section. ------- Stage 5 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x2) S - Speed Plasmo This stage has a lot of enemies that follow you around. Use the Super Laser so it bounces backward to them. It's also a good idea to have the Power Pod attached to the back of your ship part of the way. ------- Stage 6 ------- Power-Ups: #2 - Bubble Beam (x2) S - Speed No real problems here. The only thing you have to worry about are the blue whirlpools since you cannot destroy them. ======================================================================= 7) R-TYPE II (B&W) ======================================================================= This section is a walkthrough for the original version of R-Type II. NOTE: This walkthrough follows the game on Medium difficulty. ------------ Game Options ------------ Level - Easy / Medium / Hard Music - On / Off Sound - On / Off ------- Stage 1 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x4) #2 - Bubble Beam S - Speed (x2) Missile If you've played Super R-Type for SNES, this stage should seem a little familiar. Like in the first R-Type, use your improved charged Beam attack to defeat the enemies. Once you start to get inside in the little path, some tunnels open up, and enemies come out. Use your Power Pod to get rid of them. While that's going on, charge up your Beam. Then when you see the large ships fly out of the water, blast them. The only trouble spot is this stage is the pathway with the turrets attached to the ceiling and the ground. To stop them from coming out, destroy the crystal things. Right after that is a robot. Throw everything you've got at him. ------- Stage 2 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x3) #2 - Bubble Beam (x2) #3 - Fire Chain (x2) S - Speed (x3) Plasmo The first and only water stage in the game. When you go underwater, the R-9 will obviously move a lot slower. The enemies that travel in a line can be a real pain. Once one gets hit, it goes straight ahead and only stops when it hits a wall. So to avoid getting blown to bits, attack them from a distance. When you get to the waterfall, go through as quickly as you can because it will gradually make you go down. Squids will drop down from some of the waterfalls so use the Fire Chain to defeat them. The large creature you run into isn't really as it might seem. Attack the little ball on top of him to stop its attack. ------- Stage 3 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x3) #2 - Bubble Beam #3 - Fire Chain (x2) S - Speed (x2) Plasmo Missile (x2) The Fire Chain is a must for this level. Use it to defeat the cannons attached to the battleships. Make sure you protect your back because they are different spots throughout the stage where enemies will attack you from behind. At about 2 points in the level, there is a battleship that will move. If you take the wrong path, your ship will be destroyed. So either move up or down depending on which one you're at. There are 2 cannons that fire a laser that you cannot block, so make sure you take them out as soon as you can. ------- Stage 4 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x3) #2 - Bubble Beam (x3) S - Speed (x2) Missile A very strange level. As you go through this stage, enemies will fly in. They will either put out blocks you can destroy or blocks you cannot destroy. Don't fret if it seems you're stuck. If one of those enemies fly over a block, it will get rid of it. You should, obviously, defeat the enemies that lay indestructible blocks as soon as possible. Right after the robot, there are columns of blocks. Here, an enemy will remove one block in each column. So go through the path it leaves. ------- Stage 5 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x4) #2 - Bubble Beam (x2) S - Speed (x2) Plasmo Missile (x2) Very similar to the final level of R-Type. Enemies fly at you from every direction, so getting a couple Speed Upgrades and Plasmos are a must. At some points, you should attach the Power Pod to the back to attack enemies. ======================================================================= 8) R-TYPE II (CE) ======================================================================= This section is a walkthrough for the color version of R-Type II. NOTE: This walkthrough follows the game on Medium difficulty. ------------ Game Options ------------ Fire - Normal / Auto1 / Auto2 Level - Easy / Medium / Hard Music - On / Off Sound - On / Off Play Level - Varies on how far you're in this game. ------- Stage 1 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x4) #2 - Bubble Beam S - Speed (x2) Missile Do the usual charging of your Beam to defeat the first few waves of enemies. Pick up the Power Pod to destroy the tunnels that launch out more fighters. The only troublespot is the tunnel with the moving guns. Destroy the red glass things to stop them from coming out. ------- Stage 2 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x3) #2 - Bubble Beam (x2) #3 - Fire Chain (x2) S - Speed (x2) Plasmo Nothing really new here. For the first part, detach your Power Pod and use its "spread shot" to down the enemies. And again, be careful at the waterfall parts because it's pretty easy to die there. ------- Stage 3 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x3) #2 - Bubble Beam #3 - Fire Chain (x2) S - Speed (x2) Plasmo Missile (x2) 1-Up Nothing new here either... ------- Stage 4 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x3) #2 - Bubble Beam (x3) S - Speed (x3) Missile Again, nothing new, but here's a tip. If you have 2 Plasmos, use them to defeat the block-laying enemies. It does help a lot more if you try it out. ------- Stage 5 ------- Power-Ups: #1 - Super Laser (x3) #2 - Bubble Beam (x2) S - Speed (x3) Plasmo Missile (x2) It would've been nice if the color stages were more different... ======================================================================= 9) BOSS STRATEGIES ======================================================================= This section, as you can see, gives you strategies for each boss in the game. NOTE: The difficulty for each boss depends on what difficulty setting you picked from the options (obviously). ------ R-Type ------ Stage 1 BOSS: Gladiator STRATEGY: Launch your Power Pod at the little pair of jaws (They're green if you're using the colored version) and fire at them. The only real problem here is the tentacle that blocks your fire and the beam that the jaws fire. Here's another strategy provided by Michael Stone: "You don't need the force ball for the gladiator. I find the best strategy is to hold down the b-button (normal fire) and then shoot at the head when the tail goes down and then go down ASAP so the head won't hit me. If you have the bubble-powerup, I merely continue attacking the area where the head is even if the tail is in the way. Then when the head fires, I go down but continue to fire. The bubble will go through the tail." Stage 2 BOSS: Gomba STRATEGY: The weakpoint here is the little eye on top. Detach the Power Pod and get it to land on the eye. Then press A, and it'll stay on it. Now stay in the lower-left corner and fire away! Stage 3 BOSS: Battleship Crusader STRATEGY: Make sure you get the Fire Chain weapon for this because it helps taking out some enemies. Then once you reach the end of the battleship, a little pod will come out and launch bombs. Use the Power Pod to take out the turrets, and then put the pod on the front of your ship. Now as soon as the pod stops attacking, put your R-Type and the Power Pod where it comes out. When it comes out again, the Power Pod will damage the pod and block its attacks. Stage 4 BOSS: Baldos STRATEGY: This boss can be a real pain! Since your basic weapon cannot inflict any damage to them, you'll have to use your Power Pod. The enemies also follow a certain movement pattern, so remember it. Stage 5 BOSS: Lunar STRATEGY: If you managed to collect the Plasmo enhancement, this boss will be much easier. As you fight Lunar, pieces of junk will shower on top of you, so move quickly if you didn't get the power-up. Anyway, when the boss opens its eye, use your weapons on it. I also found this boss takes longer to defeat, unlike the other ones. Stage 6 BOSS: BYDO Brain STRATEGY: The only problem here is the enemies that appear and those blue whirlpool things. Fire repeatedly at the jaws, and they will eventually open. When they do, launch your Power Pod into them. Now just dodge the enemies, and you should be fine. --------- R-Type II --------- Stage 1 BOSS: Zabtom STRATEGY: Very easy boss. When the red ball appears, use your weapons and Power Pod against it. If you take too long to defeat him, more walls of block will appear. Stage 2 BOSS: Inexsis STRATEGY: Another easy boss. As soon as the boss appears, launch your Power Pod on the eye on the top. Once it lands on the eye, move your R-Type in the little hole on the bottom. Stage 3 BOSS: Prisoner STRATEGY: The weakpoint for this boss is the center. Stay in the upper-left area and attack from there. Just keep shooting with what you have, and you shouldn't have a problem. Stage 4 BOSS: Rios STRATEGY: When you see the small walls come at you, fire at them, and they'll move out of your way for a short time. Go through and fire at the 3 eyes. It helps to fully charge your laser up, but that might be hard because of the moving walls. Note: On my copy of the game, the bullets against this boss seem to flicker on and off, so this may be a glitch. This made the boss much more difficult because I couldn't tell where his shots were. Stage 5 BOSS: Twin BYDO Brains STRATEGY: This battle is very similar to the other one in R-Type. Fire everything you've got at the wall, and then fire your Power Pod into it when it opens. Once you destroy the first brain, repeat the same thing to beat the second one. ======================================================================= 10) TIPS / TRICKS ======================================================================= I need more tricks for the section so if you have any, e-mail me. Reset the Game Hold Start, Select, A, and B at the same to reset the game. Skip Stages (Colored Enhanced Games Only) You can only do this if you have completed the next stage. While playing, press Start. Now press B, and you'll go to the next level. Power Pod Tactics Here are ways of making using of the Power Pod: 1. Attach it to the front or the back of your ship to act as a shield. This does not block all enemy fire, but it works against normal attacks. 2. Also having it attached to your ship allows you to use its weapon. 3. Detach the Power Pod to the front or the back of you and press the fire button. This will fire normal bullets, but the amount varies on what form the Power Pod is in. The 2nd form fires 2 bullets, and the 3rd form fires 4. De Souza Editor By: blues000 To access the drawing program, complete the R-Type DX mode. Hidden Weapon? No, it's not a "super weapon" or anything. If you play the B&W version of R- Type II, get a L2 Power Pod with Bubble Beam. But instead of the regular weapon, it fires 2 arrow beams. ======================================================================= 11) CREDITS ======================================================================= This section is here to recognize people/sites/etc. who have contributed to this FAQ.
