Secret Area 1

At the end of the 1st board there is a secret area where you can retrieve an extra life. Instead of going through the gate to exit (which is to the right), keep straight. You'll have to climb on the ledge and follow it (turning to the right) but be careful 'cause you can fall into the river. The ledge will lead you to a cave and you'll just go inside and follow it to the end.

Cheat Mode

Enter C-Down, Up, C-Up, C-Left, C-Up, Left, C-Down, C-Left or Left, Up, C-Down, C-Left, C-Right, C-Up, C-Left, Down as a password. Alternatively, enter C-Down, Up, C-Up, C-Left, C-Right, Left, C-Left, Up as a password or successfully complete the game with either character on any difficulty level. Wait for the ending credits to complete, then select "Start" from the main menu to access a cheat menu. Options on this cheat menu will allow infinite lives, inventory, continues, play as a monster, and level select.
