Hints

Basic Tips And Tricks

  • Do a quicksave before doing anything even remotely risky. Especially entering new locations.
  • For the first few hours of the game, grab and store everything, and don't get rid of anything until you're sure it won't have a use at your settlements.
  • Try to sleep in beds whenever you can instead of using items or paying the doctor. 1 hour of sleep will recover all your lost HP (minus the RAD damage).
  • People are almost always up and about after 10:00 a.m.; use beds or places to sit to pass time until then, if you come too early or too late.
  • Avoid using chems or drinking booze unless absolutely necessary; you can become addicted.
  • Once you acquire a gun, use VATS at any time to slow down time for you to make decisions.
  • Don't shoot at anyone unless they shoot at you first. Or if I tell you to. The tiniest actions can result in death here.
  • In the pinch of battle, if you're limbs aren't injured, use food instead of Stimpaks to heal so you don't have to go through the Stimpak animation before being able to return fire.
  • Unless you take a ton of radiation damage, don't use radiation removing items; instead, wait until you arrive at the first major city and have Doctor Sun remove it for 40 caps.
  • Learn the Lockpicking perk (levels 1 and 2), as well as Hacking perk (level 1) as soon as you're comfortably able to.
  • If you want to explore on your own, learn the VANS perk so VATS can show you the easiest path to your next objective.
  • If you see a weird fog and storm start up, find a bed or chair and choose to sleep/wait for several hours, or fast travel to a place far away and hope it's gone. This is a radiation storm, and will sick RADS on you until it disappears.
  • Once you find equipment that boosts CHR, keep it on you at all times. (It's usually a Suit or Dress (+2), Black-Rim Glasses (+1), and some fancy Hats (+1).) There will be several times when being able to successfully persuade will be a massive help.
  • Once you find Power Armor, USE IT SPARINGLY. It's hard to come across Fusion Cores, which allows you to use them to begin with.

The previous versions of Fallout used the tilde (~) to open the command console, but Fallout 4 is different - you use the ' (single quote or tick button) to access the command console.

  • Unlimited S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

First, get Dog (or some other companion) and go back to Sanctuary. Get the "You're Special" book under the crib and pick it up and use it. Now that it's in your inventory, drop it back on the ground and have your dog/companion pick it up, BUT, just before they pick it up, you need to quickly pick it up.
If you can do it correctly he will drop the item and it will still be in your inventory. Pick up the copy Dog dropped and you should have 2 "You're Special" books. You can drop both on the ground and one should now activate again.
You can also get more than just two special items. You can do that by:

    1. Drop special book and clone it.
    2. Drop both books and pick up.
    3. Drop 1 book and clone it.
    4. Drop all books then pick up.
    5. Repeat step 3 and 4 until desired stats are reached.

    Console Codes

To turn on console codes, you the ' key (it's next to the Enter key). This is different from previous Fallout games that used the ~ key.

  • tim : Toggles Immortal Mode

  • UNLIMITED PURCHASES! And Infinite Caps

First, you'll need to find a vendor with any type of ammo. Once there, purchase all of any type of ammunition so that it gets sent to your side of the screen during the transaction, BUT DO NOT confirm the purchase!
Click on the ammo on your side of the transaction screen. Choose to give 1 ammo back to the vendor.
Repeat the above actions, but this time give all the rest of the ammo back (with different ammo).
Send all of the original ammo back to the vendor as well. If you did this correctly you should still have one of the ammo on your side of the transaction screen that you can infinitely click on to get all of the vendor's caps!

After you select your single infinite ammo, you can purchase all of the additional ammo that the Barter has created from this process. You can do this repeatedly to get caps infinitely faster. This glitch works with pretty much anything as a substitute for the second ammo, as long as you take all of the second item from the vendor.
