METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER 
Boss Survival & Strategy Guide

This is a walkthrough of all the bosses you’ll encounter for Metal Gear Solid 3: 
Snake Eater for the Sony Playstation 2. The bosses that you encounter are in order. 
To search for a certain boss, press and hold CTRL and F and then type the boss’s 
name in the search box. Because all of the difficulty levels are different, this 
walkthrough is for beginners and covers VERY EASY mode only. Under every name, 
there’ll be a column on how easy or difficult this boss is. Below is the scale.

1 – Very Easy

Using certain guns on a boss battle gets you a prize at the end of the battle. Make 
sure you read the entire section of each boss to find out what weapon to use and 
what prize you’ll earn!

OCELOT SHOWDOWN

BOSS 1: OCELOT
----------
DIFFICULTY: 2/5

Ocelot is an expert at fighting. He is very handy with handguns and revolvers. He 
can use the ricochet of his bullets to hit you, no matter where you are; so don’t 
stay in one place for so long. Keep on running. When you see an opportunity to 
attack, take it. Ocelot’s remaining bullets are displayed on-screen, for both guns. 
Once both of them are out of ammo, shoot Ocelot. Take advantage of his reload time. 
Also, at times, Ocelot will come out to shoot you. Before he can damage you, shoot 
him. If you use the Mk22 and defeat Ocelot, you get the Animals Camouflage as a 
prize.

CONFUSE OCELOT: For this battle, if you don't shoot at Ocelot at any point during the
battle, Ocelot will ask why you aren't fighting back.

BOSS 2: THE PAIN

DIFFICULTY: 3/5

Okay, you’re up against a man who is 6 foot 2 inches and can tame a swarm of 
hornets. How can you kill him? Whenever he is not shielded by his hornets, that is 
when you can attack. The Pain has a variety of attacks. He can command his hornets 
to throw grenades at you, he can throw a chemical that hornets are attracted to, 
The Pain can shoot you with his Tommy Gun and he can also release Bullet Bees from 
his mouth, however, Bullet Bees come later in the battle. For now, just worry about 
the grenades, chemicals and the Tommy Gun. Let’s start off with the Grenade Attack. 
You know this is coming when The Pain shouts, “GRENADE!”. Stay on your rock until 
the hornets release the grenade, then jump into the water. You should be able to 
avoid the attack. The chemical attack is when The Pain throws a yellowish chemical 
at you. The hornets are attracted to this chemical. Quickly change your camouflage 
clothes and jump into the water to avoid being attacked by the hornets. The Tommy 
Gun is no problem. Just jump in the water and hide behind your rock. Halfway 
through the battle, a scene will come up. The Pain takes off his mask (Ewww! He’s 
UGLY! LOL) and released Bullet Bees from his mouth. When this happens, jump and go 
underwater to avoid being attacked by them. You know which bees are Bullet Bees and 
which ones are regular bees. The Bullet Bees leave a red line when they fly. If you 
do get a Bullet Bee inside of you, go to the Survival Viewer and choose the Cure 
option. Use the knife to dig out the bees. If you use the Mk22 to defeat The Pain, 
you get the Hornet Strip Camouflage as a prize!

BOSS 3: THE FEAR

DIFFICULTY: 3/5

The Fear is a freak of nature! He’s basically a spider. He’s double jointed in both 
elbows and can climb like spiders. If you picked up the Thermal Goggles, good show! 
The Fear uses Stealth Camouflage and this makes him invisible. The Thermal Goggles 
will pick up his body heat, even though he’s invisible, making him an easy target. 
If you didn’t pick them up, you have to defeat The Fear the hard way. When he jumps 
from tree to tree, some leaves may fall off, twigs may be snapped and branches may 
be shook. Use these clues to find out where The Fear is and when you see an outline 
of him, shoot him. The only attack The Fear has is a crossbow attack. Just keep 
running and you should be fine. The Stealth Camouflage he’s wearing makes The 
Fear’s stamina drop at a rapid pace. A tranquilizer gun is good for this battle, 
however, The Fear will sometimes go out and hunt for food and this’ll recover his 
stamina. Make sure you finish him off quickly before he can do this. If you use the 
Mk22 to defeat The Fear, you get the Spider Camouflage as a prize.

BOSS 4: THE END

DIFFICULTY: 4/5 (Normal Way), 1/5 (Cheating Way)

Take back what I said about The Fear being a freak of nature. This guys more of a 
freak! He’s photosynthetic, 104 years old and has moss growing in and outside of 
his body. Now, I've received a few e-mails saying that my previous tips weren't that
helpful so I looked around the internet to find new tips and I found one! When the
battle begins, save your game and then turn off your game counsel. Turn it back on
and then set the PS2 date 8 days forward. Then load your game back on and The End
will be dead. Simple.

BOSS 5: THE FURY
----------
DIFFICULTY: 3/5

Because this guy has a flamethrower, your bullets will get destroyed if you try 
attacking him from the front. Attack him from the sides or back. Stay away from the 
barrels! If The Fury uses his flamethrower and you’re near one, they may explode 
and Snake will be engulfed in flames. Try your absolute best to avoid getting hit 
by the flames. Once you see The Fury and he doesn’t see you, shoot three shots at 
him to put him on the ground. Then run before he gets back up and uses his 
flamethrower. If you use the Mk22 to defeat The Fury, you get the Fire Camouflage 
as a prize!

BOSS 6: THE SORROW

DIFFICULTY: 1/5

The difficulty level should be a zero. You can’t shoot anything. Everything you see 
while slowly walking down the river are ghosts. From time-to-time, The Sorrow will 
shoot a blue beam. If one hits you, an image will pop up on your TV, a scary image. 
You’ll loose LIFE if this happens but not a lot. Oh, and just to tell you, you 
can’t swim through the whole thing. I tried it and you won’t be able to go 
anywhere. Also, if you touch the ghosts that surround you, you’ll loose a little 
bit of LIFE. At the end of the path, The Sorrow will kill you. You cannot avoid 
this attack but once the message SNAKE IS DEAD appears on-screen, use the Revival 
Pill (TOOTH) and the game will continue. Once you finish the “battle”, you get the 
Spirit Camouflage as a prize!

BOSS 7: VOLGIN (1)
----------
DIFFICULTY: 4/5

Your time for this battle is extremely limited. If you’ve never used any CQC 
tactics before, pause your game and refer to the game manual on how to do them. You 
need to use CQC for this battle. Whenever Volgin is not surrounded by lightning 
crackles, go up to him and slam him to the ground. Then take out the SAA and shoot 
him until he gets up. That’s the best way I know of to defeat him. If you touch 
Volgin while he is surrounded by lightning crackles, you’ll get electrocuted and 
loose LIFE. Halfway through the battle, a scene will appear. It looks like Ocelot 
is rooting for you on this battle. Then the battle resumes. Everything is the same. 
Just keep on using CQC and the SAA and you should do fine. If you use the Mk22 to 
defeat Volgin, you get the Cold War Camouflage as a prize!

BOSS 8: SHAGOHOD (1)

DIFFICULTY: 2/5

On EVA’s bike, you have to try to shoot the Shagohod as it chases you around the 
burning research facility. No matter what gun you use, the Shagohod won’t take 
damage. However, you still have to take out enemy soldiers that surround you. After 
a few minutes, a scene will be displayed.

BOSS 9: SHAGOHOD (2)
----------
DIFFICULTY: 2/5

Now you’re on the 3-mile runway that Sokolov told you about. Volgin can now use the
jet boosters. Use the M63 to shoot the soldiers following you on their bikes and 
use the RPG-7 to shoot the Shagohod. Once you reach the bridge, a scene will be 
displayed again.

BOSS 10: SHAGOHOD (3)
----------
DIFFICULTY: 1/5

You’re automatically equipped with the SVD. Look for the explosive on the bridge. A 
flashing light should mark it. Once EVA says “shoot!”, shoot the explosive and 
that’s it. If you shoot the explosive too early or too late, the mission fails.

BOSS 11: SHAGOHOD (4)
----------
DIFFICULTY: 3/5

Half of the Shagohod is blown off. Use your RPG-7. In order to slow the Shagohod 
down, shoot it’s treads and reload your gun. Then shoot the back of the Shagohod 
once you think you have a good shot. The attacks are really not a problem. If you 
or EVA get hit, your or her LIFE gauge will automatically refill slowly. If the 
Shagohod shoots missiles, quickly equip the M63 and shoot them down. A few hits and 
the Shagohod will be destroyed.

BOSS 12: VOLGIN (2)

DIFFICULTY: 3/5

EVA is risking her life so you can kill Volgin once and for all. Most of the time, 
Volgin will concentrate on killing EVA. Use the same strategy as you used for 
SHAGOHOD (4). Shoot the treads and then shoot Volgin with the RPG-7.

BOSS 13: THE BOSS

DIFFICULTY: 4/5

You have 10 minutes to complete this battle. With the white flower pedals and The 
Boss’ white suit, spotting her won’t be easy. But you can use the same strategy 
you used with The Fear. When you see flowers moving, it means The Boss is nearby. I 
strongly suggest you use the M63. Here’s how I beat her. When I get close to her, I 
deselect all of my equipment and punch her until she falls. Then I select the M63 
and fire at her like crazy. I was able to beat her pretty quickly. As seen in 
previous scenes, The Boss is an expert on CQC tactics. When she attacks you, you 
can’t do anything about it. If you’re holding a gun while she attacks you, she’ll 
destroy that gun, however, you can still retrieve it and all of its ammo. The Boss 
uses a high-firepower gun called a Patriot. It has the size and handling of a 
pistol but its firepower is equivalent to a rifle. Be careful not to get shot. If 
you use the Mk22 to defeat The Boss, you get the Snake Camouflage as a prize (You 
use it in your second game)!

OCELOT SHOWDOWN

DIFFICULTY: N/A

This is just a little scene that happens when you escape with EVA on the WIG. 
Ocelot will take 2 SAA’s. The one on the left has the bullet in it. If you select 
that and shoot Ocelot, the bullet will turn out to be a blank and Ocelot takes both 
SAA guns, so you won’t get to start your second game with an SAA. If you choose the 
right one, there will be no bullet in it and Snake will get shot, however, it’ll be 
a blank. Snake will then try to give Ocelot his SAA back but Ocelot lets him keep 
it, thus, you get an SAA for your second game!

*FROGS* I got an e-mail recently asking about the frogs that are hidden throughout 
the game. If you shoot all of these frogs (I'm not sure how many there are) you 
will get a bonus item at the end of the game and you'll be able to use it at the 
beginning of your next game.
