Grand Theft Auto IV Secrets FAQ Document written by A P Rodas ©2009Current version: v0.7 Last update: 11 January 2009 O==============================================================================O |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| || 0.0 - VERSION INFORMATION - || |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| O==============================================================================O - Version 0.8: 11 January 2009 Well I finally came back to this, after a troubled year and multiple computer issues. Removed email address due to a major screw up with my emails. Went through everything and made some alterations, corrections and removals. Will update again soon, if I remember. :D - Version 0.7: 25 May 2008 Okay, I have been REALLY busy lately. I didn't mean to put it off this long but I've had loads to do recently. But now I have a week off with nothing to do so I managed to catch up with most of my emails (of which there are quite) a lot). Seems to be quite a lot of submissions of references and easter eggs which I've included. Managed to finally get something to include in the Bugs and Glitches sections. I still have a few emails to catch up on though! - Version 0.6: 10 May 2008 First of two updates over this weekend. I have received a LOT of emails and have had a particularly busy week, so I'll need time to work through them all. Added some things people have sent in and corrected a few typos and mistakes. Planning another update with the rest of the contributions and with "completed" Bugs/Glitches/Tricks section. - Version 0.5: 04 May 2008 Completed initial design an framework of guide. I guess the guide is pretty much half finished as stuff added when all sections are finished only expand the guide, not complete it. So the ASCII art for the headings may not look too special and it may not be perfect but I don't care. I like things to be clean and organised and easy to find, as I have read certain guides that are terribly difficult to read. So I hope to make this guide enjoyable, pleasant, interesting and fun to read. I have been slowly delving into the secrets that Grand Theft Auto IV has to offer, and there are plenty. But I have yet to see a guide dedicated to every secret, glitch, bug and trick that lurks within this amazing game. So I have decided to start one myself, and give me something to do. Of course one man cannot do this by himself, so I am also counting on you dear readers, to email me about tricks, bugs, glitches and other secrets you have discovered (you will be credited of course). I want to make this THE comprehensive guide to the secrets of Grand Theft Auto IV. Have fun... ;) *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 1.c Spoiler warning | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* As much as I don't like spoiler warnings, I feel I should add a disclaimer to this guide or I'm going to get a lot of angry emails from people claiming that I am some sort of evil monster/the devil/a prick because I spoiled their game. So my dear readers, I suggest you read on. For my sake, as much as yours. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: This guide *** WILL *** contain spoilers. It is simply impossible to cover all of the games secrets and tricks without revealing plot details, characters and other storyline information ect. in some form. I am not responsible for any disatisfaction you may recieve from reading this and spoiling your own game. You have free will, and I have stated that this guide has spoilers for the sake of those who may accidently discover them without having any sort of forewarning that they are in this guide which would be kind of unfair. If you read this guide, discover spoilers and get infuriated about it, don't come crying to me and send me hate mail because I will immediately delete it. I've already ensured that I have notified readers that this guide contains spoilers in many forms. If you don't want your game to be spoiled, don't read it. Simple as that. Go finish the game, and come back afterwards to try everything out. See, Doesn't that make everyone happy? The choice is yours. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. For those who are willing to take the plunge, read on... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- O==============================================================================O |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| || 2.0 - Cheats - || |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| O==============================================================================O Cheats, while they work exactly the same, are entered completely differently in Grand Theft Auto IV. You will need to enter these as phone numbers in Niko's mobile phone. Some cheats may prevent you from obtaining certain achievements or 100% completion of the game. All cheats are "Use at own risk". I personally recommend not using them until you have completed the game, but the choice is completely up to you. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 2.a *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 3.b Secret Clothes | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* There are a few hidden outfits in the game. They aren't too hard to get hold of, but they are really cool nonetheless. In the mission "The Holland Play", if you kill Playboy X you will receive his apartment. In the wardrobe you will find Claude's leather jacket and trousers! Claude is the protagonist of GTA III. You can only access his outfit in this safehouse. It looks absolutely kick-ass on Niko though! On Happiness Island, you will find a t-shirt lying on the ground near the base of the statue. If you pick it up, Niko will put it on and it will be added to your wardrobe. The shirt reads "Happiness is.." on the front, and "...land" on the back. Those clever rascals... In the mission "Flatline", walk into the hospital, turn right, and right again into a small room adjacent to the receptionist. There is a small room to the right with lockers. One of them has a scrubs uniform in it, which can be used to bypass security in the hospital. After the mission, it will be added to your wardrobe. O==============================================================================O |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| || 4.0 - EASTER EGGS - || |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| O==============================================================================O *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.a Heart of the City | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* Simply nick a helicopter and fly over to the Statue in Happiness on Happiness Island. When you are near the statue, jump out of the helicopter and try to land on the top most tier of the statue's base. You will find four doors, one of them will have a plaque with a message saying "No Hidden Content Here". The door looks solid but you can walk straight through it. Once inside, climb up the ladder and at the top you will find an actual giant beating, pumping heart, held in place with chains. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.b Buildings of Old | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* Go behind the Memory Lanes bowling alley on Firefly Island and check out the golf course. Some of the attractions are actually small models of familiar landmarks from previous games! There's the Ocean View Hotel from Vice City, The World's Biggest Cock, the radio towers from Los Santos, a Wind Turbine from San Andreas and a few other buildings. Pretty cool of Rockstar to include them into the game. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.c Child's Play | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* In Dukes, near Francis International Airport, is a child's buggy! Who knows what it is supposed to represent or why it is indeed there in the first place? Still though, it's an interesting and slightly creepy thing to check out. Joshua Vaughan writes in to tell me that if you venture around the "Screamer" rollercoaster, in a small walled in field there are five abandoned school buses. Rockstar poking fun at the fact there are no children in Liberty City? Likely. Thanks Joshua! *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.d Sound Blast from the Past | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* Some of the ringtones you can choose for the more "modern" phones are actually songs from Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories! Also the "Pager" ringtone is actually the pager sound from GTA III, and in turn the theme song ("Joyride" by "Da Shootaz") for the original Grand Theft Auto game. (Thanks to both Marquis Cha Cha and Arne Biermann for this one) *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.e Hidden Artwork | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* There is quite a lot of artwork hidden throughout the game. Between Hooper Street, Stones Street and Dukes Boulevard, there's a building with some artwork of a motorbike from Vice City, El Burro, D-Ice and 8-Ball from GTA III and the GTA III box art, all mixed in with some generic graffiti. There is also some Banksy homages hidden in the game as well. Banksy is a British street artist who is known for his graffti masterpieces. Artist Tim Gilbert was asked to create some artwork inspired by Banksy artwork which is hidden throughout Liberty City. Interestingly, Banksy was asked to contribute some art to the game but declined the offer. Thanks to Matthew Powell and L. Twain for the corrections. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.f Familiar Sights | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* On the TV you can see some adverts featuring places from other games made by Rockstar Games. You can see the Bullworth Academy, Los Santos International Airport, Vinewood, the Las Venturas Strip and more. Because of the size they appear, they even look a little bit like GTA IV on the small screen... if you squint your eyes! Okay, maybe not. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.g Dead Protagonists | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* It looks like Dan Houser wasn't lying when he mentioned that most of the old characters are "dead anyway". On walls throughout the city, you can find some graffiti of all the old protagonist's names (Claude, Tommy, Carl, Toni and Victor) with messages such as "R.I.P", "We'll miss you", "We will never forget" and "You're still my hero!" clearly suggesting that they are all dead as of 2008. The only protagonist that we have previously seen die was Victor Vance, in the opening sequence of Vice City. Lots of people debated this to be someone else (despite all the evidence to the contrary), but it doesn't matter as they are all definitely dead now anyway. Josh Mcgill emailed me to say that amongst the graffti is "NURB RENDA". NURBS are the new standard for rendering mesh models for 3D animation. Replacing the standard polygon because of the shading and details. Thanks Josh! *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.h Salvatore's Mansion | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* In Alderney, you will have to meet up with Ray and Phil at a borded up mansion. This is actually supposed to *represent* a derelict version of Salvatore's mansion from GTA III and GTA LCS, which has sadly been left to rot and decay all these years. The driveway to the mansion is extremely similar to Salvatore's driveway. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.i Cluck Norris | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* Inside any of the Cluckin' Bells, you'll find a statue of a Chicken-man doing karate. The statue is inscribed with the name "Cluck Norris", and obvious parody of martial artist movie star Chuck Norris. (Thanks again to Cory Keaton for this one as well!) *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.j Karate Kid | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* On the eastern shore of Westdyke, there is very large rock protruding from the water. On top of the rock is a guy practising karate moves. You can see him by flying a helicopter near the top of the rock, however if you get too close, he will commit suicide by jumping off the rock. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.k OG Joke | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* Look on the floor of the safehouse in Bohan. You'll find an OG Loc CD. OG Loc is a phony rapper from San Andreas, who Carl Johnson helps rise to fame by stealing Madd Dogg's rhyme book before eventually rescuing Dogg from committing suicide and bringing down Loc's career. Quite how his CDs have managed to last all these years are a mystery! (Thanks to Eric Rojas for this one!) *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.l Billboards | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* Some of the billboards around town have "Love Fist" advertised on them. Love Fist are a band that was featured in Vice City and been referenced to in almost every game since. The in-game media even mentions that a Love Fist renunion has recently taken place. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 4.m Can you feel the Love? | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* In Playboy X's penthouse, there's a shelf to the right of the door with some DVD/CD cases on it. Take out your trusty sniper rifle and shoot the cases to reveal a picture of Donald Love on the cover. (Thanks to Josh McGill for this one!) Another interesting reference to Love is in the Liberty Tree newspaper. On the cover of one of them is a picture of Love and the headline "Love's hate relationship with taxes", suggesting that Love either fled or is in prison after the events of GTA III (Possibly explaining why he disappeared?). (Thanks to Klaydoggy for this one!) Klaydoggy also writes in an easy way to find a Liberty Tree Newspaper: "An easy way to find a Liberty Tree is to go to any street corner that has the newspaper vending machine things, and look into them with a sniper rifle. I even saw a Daily Globe machine that had Liberty Tree issues in it. That, or just kill random people reading the paper and you will come across a Liberty Tree". O==============================================================================O |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| || 5.0 - References - || |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| O==============================================================================O *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 5.a Mission References | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* - The Little Jacob mission "Concrete Jungle" is named after a Bob Marley hit which is also featured on the game's soundtrack. (Thanks to Massimo "Fucktotum" for this reference!) - The mission "'The Master and the Molotov" is likely a reference to the book "The Master and the Margarita", written by Mikhail Bulgakov. (Thanks to minipulator for this reference!) - The mission "Crime and Punishment" is a reference to the book of the same name by Fyodor Dostoevsky. (Thanks to The Dave and dude dude for this reference!) - The mission "The Puerto Rico Connection" is a parody of the movie "The French Connection", famous for it's car chase of an elevated train. The mission even features the exact same scenario, where you need to chase an elevated train! (Thanks to Jered Gunn for this reference! Thanks to everyone else who also sent this in) - The mission "Portrait of a Killer" references the novel of the same name by Patricia Cornwell which presents the theory that painter Walter Sickert was the true identity of Jack the Ripper. - The mission "Holland Nights" is most likely a reference to the movie "Harlem Nights", starring Eddie Murphy. (Thanks to Anthony Cocorikis for this reference!) - The mission "Weekend at Florian's" is a reference to the film "Weekend at Bernie's". - The mission "I Need Your Clothes, Your Boots, and Your Motorcycle" is an obvious reference to the line spoken by Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" - The mission "To Live and Die in Alderney" is a reference to the movie "To Live and Die in L.A." - The mission "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" is blatantly a reference to the song in the production "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", most famously sung by Marilyn Monroe. - The mission "One Last Thing" is a reference to the film... "One Last Thing"! - The mission "A Dish Served Cold" is a very obvious reference to the term "Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold", which first originated in the novel "Les liaisons dangereuses". Seeing as the mission is only avaliable in the Revenge ending strand, this is a perfect choice of name for the mission. - The mission "If the Price is Right" is an obvious reference to the game show "The Price is Right". - The final mission "A Revenger's Tragedy" is a reference to the play (and a movie made based on the play) "The Revenger's Tragedy". *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 5.b Achievement References | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* - "Assassains Greed" is an obvious referece to the "Assassains Creed" series. - "Dial B for Bomb" is a reference to the Alfred Hitchcock film "Dial M for Murder" (Thanks to Jeff Blum for this one!) - "Manhunt" is an obvious reference to Rockstar's other game series "Manhunt" (Thanks to Jeremy Heilman for this one!) - "Liberty City Minute" is a reference to the Don Henley tune, "New York Minute" (Thanks again to Jeremy Heilman for this one!) - "Alf Wiedersehen Petrovic" is a reference to a British TV series called... um.. "Alf Wiedersehen" incidently enough. The show is about a group of builders who get a job in Germany. (Thanks to Matt Wilson for this one!) *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 5.c Cultural References | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* - In the mission "Flatline" you can overhear a conversation between a surgeon and a nurse: NURSE: "You're not like the other surgeons here. You know, you don't have that god complex thing." JOHN: "I guess it's my bedside manner" NURSE: "John, you're terrible!" "John" is a parody of John Dorian, a character from "Scrubs". (Thanks to Rory Joe for this one!) *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 5.d No More Hot Coffee? | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* Yeah right! There are many Hot Coffee references in the game. When Niko wants to have sex with one of his girlfriends, he will ask them "Can I come in for some Hot Coffee?". The first time Niko manages to sleep with a girlfriend will unlock the achievement/trophy "Warm Coffee". There is also, interestingly enough, a cafe on Crocket Ave called "Hot Coffee". Her Happiness, The Statue of Happiness is also holding what appears to be a styrophoam coffee cup. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 5.e I scream, you scream... | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* The Mr. Tasty ice cream truck has a variety of different jingles based on classical music. One of them is "The Flight of the Bumblebee" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. (Thanks to irate314rate for this one!) Please tell me if you know what the other jingles are, because I'm definitely not an expert on classical music! *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 5.f Interesting Details | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* - If you look above the dartboard in the Irish themed pub you will see something written in Celtic font reading "Cead Mile Failte". This means "One hundred thousand welcomes" and is a common formal greeting in Ireland. (Thanks to Stephen Ryan for this one!) O==============================================================================O |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| || 6.0 - SECRETS - || |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| O==============================================================================O *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 6.a Phone Directory | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* As you are probably aware, Niko can ring people now using his mobile phone. Interestingly enough, you can also ring several other phone numbers you may see dotted through the game. Not all numbers work, so I'll eventually get around to making a list of ones that work and ones that are just mentioned somewhere in the game. As no one has actually submitted (or even been ABLE to submit) any questions, there isn't much here. Of course, if I get enough people contacting me I will expand this section accordingly. Q: Are Aliens/Bigfoot/Bears/Betty the Alligator/Sharks ect. in the game? A: No, no, no, no and NO!! These things are not in the game in any form whatsoever and do not exist within the game's coding at all. They do NOT exist in ANY GTA game (except the non-solid sharks in Vice City and San Andreas) and are completely false. They are just myths, untrue myths at that I might add. Q: How many weapons are in the game? A: 15. Q: Is the Army or any other form of military in the game? A: No. They've been replaced by the elite special ops team "N.O.O.S.E." Q: How many missions are there in the game. A: There are 94 storyline missions. There are also many more side missions! Q: OMG!! I found something really cool that I don't think anyone else has found what should I do?!! A: Submit it to this guide of course! I accept any and all such contributions and you WILL be credited appropriately as well. Make sure it's not already in the guide though, as these emails will be probably be ignored. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* | 10.b Legal Disclaimer | *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* This guide may not be reproduced under any circumstances except for personal private use.
