The vehicle races are some of the more challenging parts of the game. In this
guide, I aim to provide strategies for each race in order to help players who
are struggling to get past a certain race. All three kinds of race that are
covered in this guide are needed for 100% completion.

.-------------------------------------------------------.
Q. What are the RC Races?
:-------------------------------------------------------'----------------.
A. RC races are checkpoint races done through small, remote controlled
   cars.
'------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.-------------------------------------------------------.
Q. What are the 'levels'?
:-------------------------------------------------------'----------------.
A. There are three levels to complete for each race. Level one is one
lap of the course, Level two is two laps of the course and Level
three is three laps of the course. In order to pass a level, you
have to finish first. The next time you get into that particular RC
Toyz vehicle, you will be doing the next level of that particular
   RC race.
'------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.-------------------------------------------------------.
Q. How many RC races are there to do?
:-------------------------------------------------------'----------------.
A. There are three, one on each island.
'------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.-------------------------------------------------------.
Q. Where can I find the races?
:-------------------------------------------------------'----------------.
A. In order to find the RC races, you'll need to get in "Toyz" vans.
There are three parked around Liberty City. One in the construction
site in Portland, one in Belleville Park in Staunton and one at
Francis Intl. Airport in Shoreside Vale.

This is a course which you must complete whilst controlling a remote control
car. Here are just a few notes on the RC Cars themselves:
               _____________________________________________
- - - - - - - - - - Notes - - - - - - - - - -
[1] If driven against walls they tend to
    flip/spin and you lose control
[2] They are extremely responsive
              o---------------------------------------------o

The problem with both of these points is that it can be practically impossible
to control them, never mind win the actual races. I developed a fairly good
method for this particular set of races because I did them innumerable times
when trying to pass Level 3. The following is a fairly comprehensive
walkthrough of when to accelerate, break, slow down etc.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
: Note: Before beginning, I recommend you change your directional movement :
: from the analog stick to the directional buttons. :
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Having waited for the countdown to conclude, accelerate forward and go through
the first three checkpoints before accelerating towards the building. Take
this checkpoint before slowing down. Stay to the right (but not too close to
the wall) to get through the gap. Tap the accelerator here to go through the
checkpoint and then the next checkpoint. You will now have to make a hard
right and go through a fairly narrow gap. It is imperative you do not hit the
side of wall here or you could lose all control of the car. Once through the
gap, carefully negotiate the gap in front of you. Now you can accelerate to
full speed. Before the right turn, let go of X and use the directional buttons
to "glide" around. Tap left a few times after the initial turn and you
'should' end up facing down the walkway. Accelerate through and then slow down
again and use the directional buttons to glide around the right hand corner in
front of you. Now accelerate down the hill before making a right turn in to
complete the lap.

You will have to complete this three times. The first level consists of one
lap, the second level consists of two laps and the third level consists of
three. Your level progress is stored, so you don't have to do them one after
the other. You gain progressively higher financial rewards as you complete each
level. Achieving Level 3 is necessary for 100% completion of the game.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
II. Ragin' RC
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Location: Beside the house in Belleville Park, Staunton Island

Similar to the previous RC race, except it's even harder. This time you have
to contend with mounds, pedestrians, lakes etc.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
: Note: Before beginning, I recommend you change your directional movement :
: from the analog stick to the directional buttons. :
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Unlike bike or car races, your opponents all line up in front of you in this
formation:

REMOTE CONTROLLED CAR 1 REMOTE CONTROLLED CAR 2 REMOTE CONTROLLED CAR 3

                                   YOU

This means that any initial overtake is practically impossible. In this
particular race, there are certain sections where you can gain an advantage
and other areas where you need to play it safe. For the first 4 checkpoints,
accelerate but take your finger off the accelerator to make the turn into the
checkpoint. For the one over the mound, accelerate to the right hand side of
the mound and get the checkpoint before going to the right to take the next
one. Let go of the accelerator and glide around to face towards the next one.
When you go under the bridge, let go of the accelerator and brake left into
the next turn. Continue through this next set of markers cautiously, ensuring
you don't flip the car. When you make a hard left up the mound, following by
another left then a right, this is your chance to build up some speed and take
a lead.

Accelerate forward and make gentle adjustments with the left and right
directional buttons. When you're going over the bridge, steady yourself (let
go of the accelerator if need be) and then brake as soon as you go over the
bridge. Go through this checkpoint and handbrake turn to the right. Hold the X
button in now as you can build up some real speed. Before the marker in front
of the lake, let go of the accelerator and glide to the left before
accelerating quickly and pulling a handbrake turn into the marker ahead of
you (Make sure you handbrake turn to the right). Now accelerate forward and
as soon as you go through this marker, let go of the accelerator and glide to
the left and then the right through the fence. Accelerate forward to complete
the lap.

The following are some tips that will prove extremely useful to you through
the course of this particular set of RC races:

       o============================================================o
[1] Slow down/Brake to take corners effectively
[2] After taking the corner, immediately accelerate back
    to top speed
[3] If you take the lead, simply focus on finishing the
course itself - the other racers are unlikely to
    catch up
       o------------------------------------------------------------o

Like the previous RC race, there are three levels, with level one consisting
of one lap, level two consisting of two laps and level three consisting of
three laps. You will need to complete up to level 3 for it to go towards
achieving 100%.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
III. Chasin' RC
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Location: Francis Intl. Airport, Shoreside Vale

This is perhaps the easiest of all three RC races.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
: Note: Before beginning, I recommend you change your directional movement :
: from the analog stick to the directional buttons. :
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Unlike bike or car races, your opponents all line up in front of you in this
formation:

REMOTE CONTROLLED CAR 1 REMOTE CONTROLLED CAR 2 REMOTE CONTROLLED CAR 3

                                   YOU

As soon as you start, go the left hand side of the three cars and go through
the first few checkpoints. There is no posts, pedestrians etc. in the way, so
you have a lot of space to move into to avoid the other RC cars. Keep the X
button held in and make small alterations to your path with the directional
buttons. When it comes to the stairs, line yourself up (even if that means
taking your finger off the accelerator for a short moment) and make sure you
get over the stairs. Once you have, speed towards the next checkpoint and
continue to make only small alterations to your path.

Because of where the race is, you will find this incredibly easy to complete.

I recommend a police car for this race. It has good acceleration and speed,
but it is also durable - which means you can crash into a few posts and so on
as you go along without worrying that the car will soon blow up. You'll have
to race through the Red Light District, Harwood, Saint Mark's and then finally
Chinatown.

You will need to do two laps. After coming first, you receive $1500 and
complete the mission.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
II. Deimos Dash
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Location: Aspatria, Staunton Island

For this race, I recommend a Yakuza Stinger, which can be picked up from
Newport. It has good acceleration and speed, but it's handling is key. When
you are travelling at such quick speeds you will need to be able to get the car
back in a straight line as quickly as possible. Other cars which I tried, such
as a the V8 Ghost just didn't have the necessary qualities to win.

For this race, there is one key place where you can gain a good lead. When
you head out on to the main outer-ring road after passing the stadium, simply
hold the button and go flying around. You only have to do one lap, so gaining
an advantage on this stretch of road is crucial.

Furthermore, use the handbrake and accelerate as soon as you are facing the
right way, then use the analog stick to straighten yourself. This will allow
you to get away quicker than the other cars and ensure you keep any lead you
develop.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
III. Wi-Cheetah Run
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Location of mission: Wichita Gardens, Shoreside Vale

The first thing you should do is get a Yakuza Stinger. The car has great speed,
acceleration and can take a little bit more of a bashing than usual sports
cars. The first time you try this, I recommend you simply try and get a feel
for the course. After that you can make a genuine attempt to win the race.

Once you start, accelerate up the hill and pull a handbrake turn around the
corner. As soon as you are facing the right way, accelerate. This allows you to
take corners much quicker. The Porter Tunnel section is where you can really
widen the gap time-wise, as the Yakuza Stinger has fantastic overall speed. The
tunnel is long enough for you to be at top speed for a good ten seconds and
this can push you all the way in to first place and keep you there.

At the S-shaped section of the road, I recommend that you handbrake turn
around all the 180 degree turns:

          | H | Where you should perform the handbrake turn |
          \_____|_____________________________________________/

This diagram shows you where to perform the handbrake turns. Performing them
here means that when you skid around the corner, you are facing exactly where
you need to and can speed off, gaining valuable seconds. When you come to the
part of the road that looks like this:

                            || \\    ||
                            ||  \\   ||
                            ||   \\  ||
                            ||____\\_||
                            '---------'

(This is the part of Wichita Gardens with the apartments). You should slow
down to make your turn on to the diagonal road. This is because if you take
it too quickly then the actual barrier on the road is too low for you to simply
crash into it. Instead you fly off the side and will basically have to give up
on the race.

Once you've made your turn here and turned around the road with water on either
side, you can afford to accelerate through the last two or three checkpoints.
As stated previously, the Yakuza Stinger offers great speed and these little
bursts could be the different between 1st and 4th.

You'll have to do two laps of the course. Upon finishing first, you will
receive $1500.

.-------------------------------------------------------.
Q. What are the bike races?
:-------------------------------------------------------'----------------.
A. The bike races are illegal street races with motorbikes instead of
   cars.
'------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.-------------------------------------------------------.
Q. Where can I find the bike races?
:-------------------------------------------------------'----------------.
A. Walk into the yellow marker of ringing payphone to have a challenge
   issued to you.
'------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.-------------------------------------------------------.
Q. How many races are there to do?
:-------------------------------------------------------'----------------.
A. There are three races - one on each island.
'------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.-------------------------------------------------------.
Q. Do I have to use a specific kind of motorbike?
:-------------------------------------------------------'----------------.
A. No, however I recommend that you use the same kind of bike as your
opponents. For example, in the Portland race, the other competitors
are using the Sanchez. You should do the same since the Sanchez is
better with sharp corners and you won't fall over the bike if you
accidentally scrape against a car - like the PCJ. For the other two
races, your opponents are using PCJ 600s. You should use them as
well for the races on Staunton and Shoreside Vale.
'------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.-------------------------------------------------------.
Q. How do I get my bike to go quicker?
:-------------------------------------------------------'----------------.
A. Push forward gently on the analog stick to make Toni lean forward
on the bike. This will cut the amount of air resistance and
   increase your speed.

Whilst points 1 through 10 might not accurately represent the yellow markers
you have to go through, they show the route of the course. You have to complete
three laps and finish first to complete the race. The first thing people most
people do when they are faced with a bike race is grab a PCJ 600. You'll
notice all the other bikes are 'Sanchez's. You will need to find one also.

At the beginning of the race, you will be faced with the following racer
arrangement:

  BIKE 1
          BIKE 2

  BIKE 3
           YOU

At the beginning of the race, don't accelerate too much or you will find
yourself crashing into the bikes in front of you. They go straight towards
the marker, so the best thing to do is to stay back. When you make the first
turn at 2, this is your time to accelerate. Position yourself in the middle of
the road and hold in X. This will allow you to really build up speed whilst
avoiding all traffic. Keep accelerating until between 4 and 5 on the diagram
and then slow down a little bit before hand brake turning into 5.

You'll be going against the traffic now, so make sure you avoid any cars that
are coming towards you before hand brake turning at 7, 8, 9 and 10. When you
get back to 1 you will complete a lap. As stated previously, you will need to
complete three laps to win.

The following are general suggestions:

any stage of the race - the ground can easily be made

The key thing to remember is patience. You don't need to be first the entire
way round, so wait for your opportunities to overtake before doing so.

II. Torrington TT
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Location of mission: Bedford Point, Staunton Island

This bike race is relatively simple. Unlike the one in Portland, you should be
on a PCJ and the roads are nowhere near as compact as the race through the
Red Light District.

The paypone itself is located on the south side of the island, two streets
west of where you pick up missions from Donald Love.

After getting a PCJ, get to the starting grid. Again, the starting grid will
look like this:

  BIKE 1
          BIKE 2

  BIKE 3
           YOU

Whilst you are at the back, you can easily accelerate up your opponents left at
the beginning and pull a handbrake turn before accelerating away again.

The following are general suggestions for the race:

    you

[5] The PCJ has greater speed than the Sanchez, but you
will have to brake much earlier to glide around the
    corner before accelerating away again.
       o------------------------------------------------------------o

You will have to do two laps of the race and finish first to complete the
mission.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
III. Gangsta GP
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Location of mission: Pike Creek, Shoreside Vale

This is a trickier race than the previous three, mainly because there are a lot
more posts and so on that you can crash into. The corners are also tighter and
you'll probably have to go round the course itself a couple of times to get a
feel for it before you can make a genuine attempt to finish first.

The first thing you'll need to do is get a PCJ, so after finding one go to the
starting point near the entrance to the dam road in Pike Creek. As usual, the
starting grid looks like this:

          BIKE 1
  BIKE 2

          BIKE 3
   YOU

Whilst the countdown is on, keep holding X so that you can get away as
quickly as possible. Once you've started, take the first corner by letting go
of X and gliding around. Accelerate away, pushing forward gently on the analog
stick to go quicker. When you have to make a sharp right turn, use the
handbrake and then accelerate. Glide around the next three corners and when
you come to the long stretch of road, push forward gently on the analog stick
whilst in the middle of the road. You'll pick up a lot of speed and gain
valuable seconds doing this. Hard turn the next corner using the handbrake and
accelerate up this road. Glide this corner to the right before pushing forward
gently on the analog stick whilst you are going up the long, uphill, stretch of
road. Glide the corner to the left and then handbrake the next turn to the
right. Accelerate forward and make sure you don't crash. That is one lap.

Repeat the above method for all three laps. You'll need to finish first after
three laps to complete the mission and receive $1500.

The vehicle races are one of the more challenging parts of the game. Whilst
players can be good at the bike races or the car races, it is usually one or
the other. The RC races are universally hated - understandably. I hope this
guide has helped players struggling with this challenging - but fun - part of
the game.
