INTRODUCTION
 
The World Wrestling Federation has transcended mere sports entertainment. Weaving 
elements of arena sports, comic books, mass media and dance, wrestling has become a 
kind of glitzy (yet decidedly pedestrian) postmodern opera. Weekly, fans of the WWF 
plug into the excitement via Thursday’s Smackdown. It has become an American 
obsession. It has become lifestyle. In some cases, it has become life. 

But enough babble. The bottom line is this: the World Wrestling Federation kicks a 
full two cheeks of roody-poo jabroni keister, and THQ’s WWF Smackdown accurately 
blends every slam, clothesline and People’s Elbow into one of the Playstation’s most 
anticipated titles of the year. 

We’ve created this guide to help you become a roughneck punk or high-flying aerial 
assailant. Inside, find Smackdown secrets, full strategies for every game mode, and 
moves lists for your favorite WWF superstars. Now go forth and make some candy-ass 
freaks into floor pizza! 


BASICS

Basics 
Like most wrestling games, WWF Smackdown has a number of moves per superstar, some 
signature and some fairly standard. Smackdown takes the genre a step further and 
assigns moves according to wrestler personality. Therefore, a roughneck wrestler 
will have different basic moves than an aerial wrestler. 

However, every wrestler obeys certain basic controls. They are: 

Move: directional buttons 

Attack: X 

Irish Whip: O 

Grapple: O + directional button 

Reverse/Counter: square 

Run: triangle 

Climb turnbuckle: triangle + directional button 

Leave ring: R1 + directional button 

Enter ring: triangle 

Tag partner (tag team match): R1 

Pin: O + down 

Face new opponent: R2 


WRESTLERS/MOVES

WWF Smackdown boasts 36 wrestlers, plus the ability to create several custom 
grapplers. We’ve assembled a full moves list for eleven of the WWF’s biggest 
superstars, and five signature moves for the rest of the crowd. Check this guide 
often. We’ll be updating it with full moves lists for all wrestlers soon! 

As you progress in the Season mode, you’ll unlock the ability to create several more 
WWF celebrities. See the Secrets section of this guide for a list of secret 
superstars, and how to unlock them. 

Note: There are NO double-team moves in Smackdown! 

Use the descriptions below to understand the various situational moves: 

READY MOVES:
Grapple: Grapple the standing opponent from front. 
Grapple Groggy: Grapple the groggy opponent from front. 
Attack: Kick and punch the standing opponent. 

BEHIND:
Grapple: Grapple the standing opponent from behind. 

GROUND:
Grapple Upper Half of Body: Grapple the upper body of the fallen opponent. 
Grapple Lower Half of Body: Grapple the lower body of the fallen opponent. 
Attack: Punch and kick the opponent on the ground. 

TURNBUCKLE:
Upper front: Grapple the opponent at the turnbuckle from front. 
Upper behind: Grapple the opponent at the turnbuckle from behind. 
Lower front: Grapple the opponent at the lower turnbuckle from front. 
Run: Run and attack the opponent at the lower turnbuckle. 

ROPE OPPONENT:
Rope Down: Attack the opponent at the rope 
Jump to Outside: Attack from the top of the turnbuckle to the opponent outside of 
the ring. 
Jump Down Over: Rope dive to the opponent outside of the ring. 

AERIAL:
Stand: Attack from top of the turnbuckle to the standing opponent in the ring. 
Down: Attack from top of the turnbuckle to the grounded opponent in the ring. 
Run to Outside: Run and dive through the rope to the opponent outside of the ring. 

RUNNING:
Grapple: Run up to the opponent frontally and grapple. 
Attack: Run up to the opponent and punch and kick. 
Counter: Grapple the opponent running up to the player. 

APPEALING:
Attempt to excite the crowd.

EXHIBITION

Want to take your nearest and dearest to the house? Want to try out a variety of 
grapplers? Need to test your newly-created Superstar on WWF competition? Practice 
skull-busting in the Exhibition mode. This mode boasts twelve unique match styles, 
each with their own rules and strategies. 

No matter which mode you choose, you’ll be able to select your own wrestler, as well 
as your competition (when playing against a computer opponent). Cycling through the 
names displays mugs of each star, as well as their signature "Smackdown" move. 
Directly below each wrestler’s smiling gob are two strength meters (containing five 
spaces each). The first tracks how many Smackdown moves a wrestler begins with. The 
default is zero, meaning you will have to earn your first special move by whoopin’ 
heiny in the ring. You can set the maximum number of special moves to five with the 
second meter. If it is set to five, you can either start with five (top meter) or 
build to five during the course of the match by filling up your power meter five 
times. 

Exhibition mode also allows you to determine several parameters to optimize your 
matches:


Match length: Set to 15,30,45, 60 minutes, or to NL to allow infinite matches. (30 
is the default) 
Interruption: Set this to "Yes" to allow for managers to interrupt your match. "No" 
turns Managers off. Or randomize the setting if you like surprises. (Yes is the 
default) 
KO & Give Up: if this is toggled to on, your match may end with a KO (knockout) or 
Give Up. A KO occurs when a wrestler performs a special move on a weakened wrestler. 
Give up occurs when a wrestler uses a submission hold as a finishing move when 
his/her opponent is in a weakened state. (On is the default) 
Rope Break: Turning this on will institute the "rope break" rule. Intended for the 
safety of wrestlers, rope break means that a wrestler cannot be pinned when his/her 
body is in contact with (or breaks the plane of) the ropes. If you don’t feel like 
pinning your foes in the center of the ring, toggle this to Off. (On is the 
default). 
Out of the Ring: Turning this Off will keep the wrestlers in the ring for the 
duration. (On is the default). 
Count Out: Sets the count out limit for being outside of the ring. Set to 10, 20, or 
NC. NC will allow infinite out-of-the-ring play. (10 is the default). 
Area: Choose between three arenas. 
Ring: Choose between the following rings: normal 1, Smackdown!, normal 2, Raw is 
War, HeAT, Wrestlemania, King if the Ring, Summer Slam, Survivor Series, or Royal 
Rumble. 
Note: Exhibition mode does not allow a wrestler to wrestle him/herself. However, if 
you absolutely need to see The Rock vs. The Rock, simply create a wrestler 
named "The Rock" with his body and moves and go to town. 

Single Match 

Single match is the most straightforward of all the modes. It’s you and another 
turkey-neck, and it’s over when you pin him/her in the confines of the ring. Hold a 
pin for three counts to earn a fall. There are a couple of other ways to bring about 
the end of a match in this mode. Well-timed submission holds may cause a wrestler to 
cry uncle and "Give Up." If an opponent is sufficiently groggy when you administer 
a "Smackdown" move, you may "KO" him/her. Of course, all of these things may also 
work against you, so be on your toes, and, if possible, avoid getting beat up to the 
point where you’re consistently dazed. You can toggle Give Up/KO on and off in the 
set-up screen. 

In single match, during the set-up screen, you’ll have the choice of Manager or No 
Manager. If you select Manager, you’ll have the opportunity to select another 
wrestler who will watch your back. During the match (especially if you’re getting 
the tar beaten out of you), the second wrestler will come sprinting down the 
entrance ramp to help out. They’ll get in the ring and trade some blows with your 
opponent while you catch your breath. Regardless of if you’ve selected manager or 
not, your opponent will have one. 

Single Match strategies:


Race to the Smackdown. If you (or your opponent) didn’t start with any Smackdowns, 
the race is on! Kick, slam, grapple and clothesline until you fill up the strength 
meter. Whoever gets the first special move is at a distinct advantage, especially if 
the special maneuver is of the pin variety. Special moves are the quickest way to a 
fall. They can also result in a KO if performed on an ultra-groggy opponent. 
Control the action by consistently putting your opponent on the mat. Use dropkicks, 
chops, or flattening grapple moves to beat down the competition. Then, spring up and 
rip off another move before your dazed foe can react. 
When another wrestler’s manager comes into the ring, pull off a string of 
uninterrupted moves on your primary opponent so that the manager can’t touch you. 
Eventually, the manager will leave the ring (even if they haven’t laid a finger on 
you) and simply watch the action from outside the ring. That doesn’t mean they’re 
done helping, though. If you get too close to the ropes near a manager, you’ll be 
pulled out of the ring. Be sure to get back into the ring before the ref counts you 
out to ten, or you’ll be disqualified. 
If your manager comes into the ring, get out of his/her way. Your buddy is 
inflicting some free damage on your foe. If your opponent is groggy when the manager 
enters the ring, they may even lay the Smackdown. If you keep performing moves while 
your manager is in the ring, your manager will eventually leave, even if he/she 
hasn’t contributed to the action. 
If your manager is ringside, knock your opponent over the ropes for more free pain. 
Your manager will clobber your enemy as you stand in the ring and watch. If the 
opposition’s 
Tag Match 

The tag team match is a bout involving four wrestlers, only two of which wrestle at 
any given moment. One wrestler and his opponent square off in the ring while their 
partners wait outside the ropes. The match ends when your wrestler pins a member of 
the opposing team. 

Your teammate can be called into action by simply tagging his/her hand (if computer-
controlled, they will only extend it when you are in trouble). This will replace 
your player with your partner in the ring. However, you will be able to get a few 
parting shots in before you have to head to the corner. Use this opportunity to grow 
your power meter and further injure your foe. 

When you want to get back into the action, hold the R1 button to extend your hand 
for a tag. If you are playing with a computer-controlled partner, he/she will come 
right over to switch. If you’re playing with one of your greedy buddies, it’s your 
call on how to make them tag. I’ve found that "It’s my game, I’ll turn it off right 
now" strikes the right chord with visiting friends (kidding, of course). If it’s 
their game, you have no recourse. Languish on the sidelines and pray for some mercy. 

If a wrestler is about to be pinned, his/her teammate will charge into the ring to 
break up the fall. Depending on the strength of your opponents (relative to your 
strength) this tactic will either extend the match or fail to break the pin. 

Tag Match strategies:


Make sure you’re facing the right opponent. This seems like it should be easy, but 
the computer-selected wrestler is often wrong. Frequently, when you get up after 
completing a move, you’ll be auto-facing your tag partner or the other opponent 
who’s hanging outside the ropes. The best way to tell who you’re facing is by 
turning player indicators on. That way, the pointer will automatically indicate the 
wrestler you currently have in your sights. Press R2 to change the focus of your 
attentions. 
Always make sure you get your shots in after making a tag. Not only does this beat 
up your opponent, but boosts your own strength for when you get back into the 
action. 
If any action is happening in your corner while you’re tagged out, help out your 
partner by punching from behind the ropes. Simply hit X to punch those in the ring. 
Watch out for your partner, though. 
By the same token, stay away from the opposition’s corner. Getting double-teamed is 
a short path to grogginess. 
Try to pin opponents in your own corner. That way, the enemy’s teammate will have a 
lot of ground to cover to bust up the fall. That also allows for your partner (or 
yourself) to get in the ring quickly to stop the break-up. 
Likewise, if your opponent is down, get into the ring and Angry Stomp or Drop to 
extend the match. 
It certainly gets boring outside of that ring! Irish whip or otherwise knock your 
opponent over the ropes to give your partner something to do. The area outside of 
the ring is free-for-all. Jump down there and join the party or get some rest by 
hanging out in the ring. 
Handicap (Two-on-One or Three-on-One) 

A handicap match pits you alone against either two or three opponents at the same 
time. Handicap matches are arguably the hardest in the game. A handicap match ends 
when either you are pinned or you pin all of your opponents. 

Handicap Match strategies:


Move! Keep running around the ring looking for places to quickly strike. If they 
can’t catch you, they can’t pin you. 
Dart in with quick attacks and try to keep all of your opponents in front of you. 
Getting sandwiched by a couple of baddies is a sure way to lose. 
Concentrate on making one opponent ultra-weak. Keep knocking that opponent down 
while you work on the other one. Then, attempt to pin the second opponent. 
Hopefully, the first opponent will be too weak and groggy to bust up the pin. 
Use attacks that don’t require you to leave your feet. Chops and Clotheslines work 
well, as do Scoop Slams. Leaving your feet leaves you vulnerable to the free 
wrestler. 
Build and use your Smackdowns. The more you can drain your opponents’ strength with 
single moves, the better chance you stand. 
Before attempting to pin an opponent, expel other foes from the ring using the Irish 
Whip or Chop attack. This will buy you time. 
Battle Royal 

The Battle Royal is a match pitting you against three other wrestlers. You’re all in 
the ring when the match begins, and guess what? Only one of you is left at the end. 
The object here is to pin each of your opponents until it’s you against one other, 
then take care of business with him/her too. 

The Battle Royal seems like it should be harder than it is. Ultimately, it becomes a 
Single Match with a lot of early traffic. Utilize strategies from single matches, as 
well as the following: 

Battle Royal strategies:


Let other wrestlers do the dirty work. Hang back and enjoy the show as the other 
grapplers beat each other silly. Contribute only to build your strength meter. 
Avoid traffic. Bunching in the center of the ring gives three opponents a shot at 
you at once. 
Save your Smackdown for the final opponent. Since the other wrestlers will eliminate 
each other anyway, hold on to your special moves to finish off the last goon. 
Royal Rumble 

Royal Rumble pits you against the world. It will take every ounce of energy you’ve 
got to outlast this match. You begin the contest in the ring with three other 
grapplers, and have to wrestle through a number of superstars to claim the crown. 
The catch? You cannot get thrown out of the ring. Do, and you’re eliminated from 
competition. The point, then, is endurance. Chuck people from the mat to and fro 
until you whittle the field down to just one, then knock him/her over the ropes, 
too. 

When a wrestler is tossed from competition, a timer will begin to count down. When 
it hits zero, the next beefcake will enter the ring. If your wrestler get tossed, 
that’s it. If you want to play another wrestler, wait until the next one comes 
screaming down the pipe, then hit Select to take control. Or, if you are done when 
your wrestler bows out, exit the game from the pause screen. 

Determine the first four wrestlers from the Character select screen. The rest will 
appear randomly as the match progresses. 

Royal Rumble strategies:


Stay in the center. Getting near the ropes is a bad idea, since one chop to the 
throat is all it takes to be eliminated from competition. The center is where all 
the traffic is. If a wrestler tries to Irish Whip you from the ring, your progress 
will almost certainly be impeded by the clogged up center. 
Or..stay on the move. When one or more superstars have departed, and you are waiting 
on the countdowns, this strategy is useful. Make a loose square around the ropes, 
avoiding conflict religiously. 
Don’t try to do all the work yourself. Let the other wrestlers beat each other down 
as you watch from a distance. Eventually, they’ll all knock each other out and 
you’ll be left with one opponent. 
Stay on the mat as long as possible. When you’re on the mat, you’re not in danger of 
being tossed. 
Avoid grogginess. When you are groggy, you are susceptible to anything the other 
wrestlers care to do to you. 
When attempting to eliminate an opponent, the Chop is probably the best move for 
swift removal. Make sure you are aimed the right way, though, or a chop could 
actually knock a rope-primed wrestler back into the center. 
Ride the counter button. If a wrestler attempts to grapple you, it could be the 
difference between victory or early exit. 
Learn how to hang on. If you are groggy and get tossed over the ropes, you still 
have hope. Hold the Counter button to cling to the rope and save yourself from 
elimination. 
King of the Ring 

King of the Ring is a bracket-style tournament of single matches. Win a match and 
advance to face your next foe. Lose and go home. In Exhibition mode, King of the 
Ring pairings are random. Select the wrestler you’d like to take through the 
tournament (up to four can compete). 

Hardcore 

Not for the faint of heart, Hardcore matches allow wrestlers to use any manner of 
random object to beat on an opponent. Each wrestler begins with their preferred tool 
of destruction.

Note: If wrestling with a belt holder in a Hardcore match, the belt will also be 
available as a weapon. 

To use a weapon, simply press X. Throw the weapon by pressing the square button. 
Attacks differ when an opponent is standing or on the ground. If you drop a weapon 
or get it knocked from your grasp, pick it up again by pressing R1. You can also 
drop a held weapon by pressing R1. Knock a weapon from another wrestler by attacking 
or grappling him/her. 

When your wrestler is holding a weapon, he/she will not be able to perform grapple 
moves or climb the turnbuckle. You will still be able to run, but if you reach the 
ropes, you will automatically slide under. 

Hardcore strategies: 

Don’t get carried away with the weapons. Weapon attacks are easy to block and leave 
you susceptible to grappling. 
When an opponent is down, pick up the weapon and hit ‘em hard. This is when they are 
at their most vulnerable. Capitalize on their weakness. 
Instead of merely putting down a weapon, throw it at an opponent. Even though it 
does little damage, it does more than simply laying it down. 
Anywhere Fall 

While most WWF matches occur within a fenced-in square of pain, an Anywhere Fall 
match can occur in any area of the arena. Luckily (unlike other matches) a pin fall 
counts anywhere you do it. To take the party to other rooms of the house, all you 
have to do is Irish Whip through doors, curtains, and up ramps. 

The first step in getting to other areas is to leave the confines of the ring. Then, 
if you Whip your foe up the ramp leading to the ring, you’ll automatically be taken 
to the Stage area. In the stage area will be a random hardcore weapon or prop 
(sometimes a gurney, sometimes a bat). Press R1 while standing next to the object to 
pick it up. 

When you get bored with the Stage area, Whip your opponent toward the huge WWF 
banner. This will take you to the Backstage area. This room is the gateway to three 
other areas. Whip the other wrestler into the room to the far right to access the 
Parking garage. Near a fenced-in area toward the top of the screen is the door to 
the kitchen. To the right of the kitchen is the boiler room. In the Backstage area, 
Whip your enemy into the soda machine and a can of soda will come out. You can only 
get a total of three to appear in the area at a given time. Pick them up (R1) and 
use them as weapons. 

In the Kitchen, there are several fun things to do. Throw your opponent into the 
boxes near the door and watermelons will pop out. Whip the baddie into the stoves to 
produce a burst of flame. Smack them into the sinks to produce a splash. These 
things do no extra damage—they are just fun touches. In the middle of the room is a 
counter that can be wrestled on top of. Unfortunately, you cannot use any aerial 
attacks down to the floor from the counter. Get up and down by pressing the triangle 
button. 

In the Boiler Room, chuck your opponent into the fenced-area and oil drums will rain 
from the ceiling. A maximum of three can be in play at the same time. In addition, 
whip other wrestlers into the boilers to produce a small blast of steam. 

Throw your opponent throw the green doors to the right of the Backstage to get to 
the Parking garage. Once there, toss your opponent into the ambulance to cough up as 
many as three gurneys to use as weapons. Throw your foes into the cars and various 
random weapons will appear (the most likely being deer heads). A maximum of three 
objects total can appear on the screen at once. 

Anywhere Fall strategies: 

Slam your opponents into every surface. As indicated above, this will make Hardcore 
weapons available. Pick up the coughed-up items to maximize the pain. 
Don’t get too preoccupied with going into the different areas. Constantly attempting 
to maneuver your opponent into new places will leave you susceptible to attacks. 
If you want to get new items (ex: garage), leave the area and come back. The area is 
reset when you leave. 
Cage Match 

Ahh, the cage match. Does it get any better? Beat the snot out of your enemy. First 
one out of the ring wins. Simple as that. 

To climb the walls, maneuver near the cage and press R1. Once you are on the cage, 
your wrestler will inch his/her way up until he/she gets over and out. It’s slow 
going and there’s really no way to speed it up. When clinging to the cage, Elbow 
Drop by pressing X. If your opponent is trying to leave, use striking attacks to 
rattle the cage and knock him/her off. 

Cage Match strategies: 

Make sure your opponent is ultra-groggy before you try to climb out of the ring. If 
the wrestler isn’t on the mat, don’t even attempt to leave. You’ll only end up 
hurting yourself. 
Smackdown moves are a good way to tenderize foes so you can depart. 
It is better to hit an opponent directly, rather than rattle the cage around 
him/her. If they are up too high, you’ll have no recourse. Use the Double Axe Handle 
or Chop on the cage for best results. 
The weaker the opponent, the harder it is for them to knock you off of the cage. 
Survival Match (3 Way or 4 Way Dance) 

A survival match pits three or four wrestlers against one another at the same time. 
It’s every man for himself, and the first wrestler to score a fall wins. Of course, 
everyone wants to win, so it is difficult to pin another without the fall getting 
busted up. 

Survival Match strategies: 

Survival match strategies are similar to handicap matches, except that the wrestlers 
are not all intent on eliminating only you. Use this to your advantage. When one of 
your opponents takes down another wrestler, swoop in with some ground grapples to 
pump your Smackdown meter. 
Always break up a pin, even if you think the fallen wrestler will kick out. 
When in a 3-way dance, beat one wrestler silly, then use your Smackdown on the 
other. If this didn’t KO the baddie, quickly cover for the pin. 
In a 4-Way Dance, allow two wrestlers to tangle while you focus on a selected foe. 
As the first pair goes down for a pin, use your special move. They’ll be stalled in 
the midst of an attempted pin, and you won’t be bothered. 
Special Referee 

The special referee mode allows you to play either as a wrestler or a special guest 
ref. If you play as a wrestler, you’ll have to be on the ref’s good side to get a 
decent count on a pin attempt. If the official likes you, he’ll whip through the 
count. If not, he may suspend the count indefinitely. 

When playing as the ref, you’ll have control over the count. Press L2 for each 
number in the count. The faster you press, the faster the count. Or disregard a pin 
altogether. As special ref, you’ll be able to get in on the action, if you’d like. 
Go after the wrestler you’d like to see lose. 

Special Referees strategies as wrestler: 

Never, ever, ever hit the referee. You want him/her on your side. If you smack the 
ref, he’ll slow the fall count to a crawl. You may be better going after a KO or 
Give Up if the ref is against you. 
If you happen to hit the ref, he/she will come after you. Take your medicine, kid. 
You don’t want to make it any worse. 
Wrestle near the ref and hide behind him/her, but avoid contact! Eventually, you’ll 
cause your opponent to smack the special official. That way, you can score some free 
pain as the ref pursues your foe. 
Luckily, the ref has a short memory. If you smacked him/her early on, then your 
opponent jacks the ref, the official will side against the most recent attack. 
As ref: 

Use your Smackdown move against the wrestler who you’d like to lose. Hopefully, 
their opponent will cover and you can give a quick count. 
Always help out your friends. It’s like those old Isotoner ads—take care of the 
hands that take care of you. 
When your enemies are trying to pin, suspend the count or don’t even bother. 
I Quit 

The only way an "I Quit" match can end is if one wrestler makes the other say uncle 
in front of the entire arena. To win an "I Quit" match, beat your opponent to a 
pulp, then grab the microphone that is laying ringside and straddle your foe. If 
he/she is sufficiently exhausted, the wrestler will submit to you in front of the 
entire arena. 

To pick up the microphone, press R1. To do a litmus test on how your opponent is 
feeling (by cramming the microphone down his/her throat) by pressing the grapple 
button when your opponent is down (and you are holding the mic). 

I Quit strategies: 

Don’t bother with the mic until late in the match. An opponent has to be plenty weak 
before submitting. 
I Quit counts anywhere, so don’t hesitate to make your opponent eat the mic outside 
the confines of the ring. 
A good time to see if your opponent wants to give up is right after performing a 
special move on them (as long as it isn’t a pin-type move). 
Don’t bother with pin moves in general. They do relatively little for you. 


SEASON

Playing the season mode allows you to take your favorite WWF Superstar, or one of 
your own creation, through a series of years of events and matches. During season 
mode, you’ll have to forge and maintain relationships with other superstars in a 
series of backstage encounters. Your decisions affect who you pair with on tag team 
events, who comes to your aid, and what sorts of rivalries you’ll be involved with. 

One to four players can go through a season. After you’ve selected New Game in the 
Season start-up screen, you’ll have a chance to pick the wrestler you’d like to 
control. Assign 1P, 2P, 3P and 4P to the grapplers you’d like to control. Created 
wrestlers appear at the end of the list. 

If you add more than one created wrestler to your season, you will go to the Group 
Menu after the Season Mode screen. Select from the following groupings:


Solo: each wrestler goes it alone through the season. 
A group of two people: two created wrestlers will form a union. Other created 
wrestlers will be on their own. 
A group of three people: three created wrestlers will form a union. The other 
created wrestler will be on his/her own. 
A group of four people: all created wrestlers will begin as a team of buddies. 
Two groups of two people: the created wrestlers will pair off in two groups. Bow to 
your partner. Bow to the corner. Now dosey-do. 
Preseason affords you the opportunity to make both alliances and enemies. In several 
backstage cut scenes between matches, wrestlers will approach you and offer advice 
and otherwise talk to you. If you disregard or insult them, they will become your 
enemies. If you listen to what they have to say, thank them and generally project 
positivity, they will come to respect and like you. Then, later in the season, they 
will help you out of jams and pair off as your tag team partners. 

The allegiances and rivalries that are determined in preseason will stick for the 
remainder of your career. They do not change as you progress. You do not make new 
friends or new enemies. Therefore, it is imperative to nurture the relationships 
that are important to you in the preseason. You won’t have a second shot. 

Both the preseason and season progress through a number of events. Each event has 
six matches, represented by a Card. The matches range from Single to Hardcore to 
Survival. Depending on how popular your wrestler is, you will be billed in different 
positions and various matches on the Card. During the season, before each match, you 
will have the opportunity to either play the Match or Skip it on the card screen. 
Cycle through all the matches by pressing R1 and L1. 

During season mode, most of the events are randomized between House Show, Raw is War 
and Smackdown! However, each season, there are several marquis (PPV) events that 
showcase the best talent in the WWF. Move up the ranking list by consistently 
winning and pleasing the crowd (audience rating). As you progress up the ranks, 
you’ll have the opportunity to participate in showcase matches and wrestle for 
titles (providing your rank is high enough).

BELT RECORD/RANKINGS

When playing WWF Smackdown in Season mode (and certain other matches where you 
qualify), you will have the opportunity to wrestle for various championship belts. 
Getting a crack at the title is not easy, however, since most belts are closed until 
you reach a certain rank. Win a championship and you will hold the belt until the 
next title match. 

Note: The most belts you can hold at one time is five.

Rankings 

Check the rankings screen to see how you stack up to other WWF Superstars. Your 
ranking is important for consideration for several belts. 

The best way to consistently improve your ranking is by winning (surprise, huh?). It 
helps to beat opponents who are higher than you in the ranking list, and to earn 
audience approval. The higher the ranking, the higher you will be billed on the 
card. Improve your ranking to procure marquis match-ups in Season mode. 


OPTIONS

Set the parameters of the game with the Options menu. Selections in the menu affect 
every mode of the game. 

Difficulty: Normal/Easy/Hard
Set the difficulty of the game with this option. 

Easy mode ensures a faster climb to stardom, as the wrestlers are slower to react 
and easier to pin. Gamers new to wrestling games may want to start here. 
Normal mode is a good place to start if you’ve played wrestling games before. 
Opponents are quicker, craftier and harder to defeat. 
Hard mode is very difficult. Climbing to the summit of the wrestling world on Hard 
mode is admirable. For hardcore wrestling afficianados and expert gamers. 
Move Indicator: On/Off
This toggles the names of moves on and off. This feature is great for those trying 
to brush up on wrestling nomenclature and those learning controls. 

Camera Angle: On/Off
Toggle camera angle on and off. Off means that the camera will follow the action for 
a single point. On allows the camera to cut to different angles and close-ups during 
the course of the match. Select "On" to simulate the television experience. 

Vibration: On/Off
Toggles the vibration controls on and off (if your controller supports this). Use 
this to feel each slam, splash and clothesline. 

Player’s Indicator: On/Off
Toggles player indicator on and off. The player indicator is a colored circle with 
an arrow on it. The arrow indicates (by color) which wrestler the player is 
currently engaging. Press R2 to cycle through the wrestlers you face. 

Auto Save
Switches the Auto Save feature on or off. 

Sound: Stereo/Monaural
Set the sound to either stereo or mono by toggling this control. 

BGM: 01/02/03/04/05/Random
Choose between the five different music selections, or randomize the background 
soundtrack. 

Music Volume: Silent/Min/Normal/Max
Modulate music volume level. 

SE Volume: Silent/Min/Normal/Max
Modulate sound effect volume level. 

System Data Save
Save the system options you’ve just set to your memory card. 

System Data Load
Load system options from the memory card. 

Create Superstar Copy
Copy a superstar from a second memory card on to the current card. 


SECRETS

The wrestlers you unlock by progressing through several seasons will not be fully 
realized just by unlocking them. If you want to play with those wrestlers, you’ll 
have to go into Create-a-Wrestler, find their various body parts and build them from 
the ground up. Assign them personalities and moves to seal the deal. 

Unlock the ability to create Ivory by finishing your first season 

Unlock the ability to create Prince Albert by finishing your second season 

Unlock the ability to create Jacqueline by finishing your third season 

Unlock the ability to create Viscera by finishing your fourth season 

Unlock created superstars that begin with 80 ability points by finishing your fifth 
season 

Unlock the ability to create Mideon by finishing your sixth season 

Unlock the ability to create Gerald Brisco by finishing your seventh season 

Unlock the ability to create Pat Patterson by finishing your ninth season 

Unlock created superstars that begin with 90 ability points by finishing your tenth
