~ The sub-title of the game is "Journey of the Cursed King" but the cursed king is
  NOT the villain of the story, he is a victim.

~ Opening VIDEO (sometimes called "cut-scenes"):

  + The castle is shown from the viewpoint of someone climbing stairs.
    - There is no color, only sepia tones (a reddish-brown coloring showing that
      this scene is from someone's memory).

  + Then in the room at the top of the stairs, you see the back of someone with
    long hair and strange clothing.
    - You also see a tall girl (Princess Medea) and a short man (King Trode).

  + The long-haired man grabs a tall staff from the center of the room, which is
    actually the 'SEALED SCEPTER', breaking the seal with fearful consequences.

  + A fierce wind blows and an earthquake shakes the castle.
    - The man with the scepter (Dhoulmagus) moves to the balcony in front of the
      castle's main door.
      * He glows before disappearing.
    - You see large thorny vines snaking their way through the castle and blocks
      falling off the castle walls.

  + It turns out that only one person (our Hero), although knocked unconscious by
    the shaking, is unchanged.
    - King Trode has changed into a green frog-like monster.

~ The three set out from the Castle to see if they can locate Dhoulmagus and get
  him to remove the curse.

  + The rest of the game follows them as they:
    - Find friends to join their party (Yangus, Jessica, and Angelo).
    - Travel through many regions in their search.
    - And fight evil continually.

~ THE QUEST:

  + Find Dhoulmagus and remove the curse.
    - The quest may change it's emphasis as the party progresses through the game.

+ 0-2.A. THE WORLD OF DRAGON QUEST VIII +
+                                         +
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ The world in this game has several large continents and some large and small
  islands.

  + Each continent is divided into one or more "regions".
    - "Regions" are separated by bridges or rivers or mountains or ocean.

      * Means of travel across rivers or ocean is provided at the appropriate
        point in the game.

  + There are three types of locations:
    - Towns ...... This includes such places as Maella Abbey.
                   > There are no monsters in towns.
    - Dungeons ... These may be actual dungeons (underground).
                   > They may also be above ground, at least in part.
                   > Dungeons are full of nasty monsters.
    - Field ...... This is all areas that is not dungeon or town.
                   > All the countryside on any island or continent.
                   > You will meet up with many monsters in the Field, but not
                     as many as in a dungeon.

~ Once you have been to one of the towns or villages or certain other special
  locations:

   + You can return instantly to these locations using either:

       CHIMAERA WING ..... An item that allows you to travel to any town or
                           village you have already visited.

       ZOOM .............. A magic travel spell received by Hero when he has
                           8 Courage skill points (more later about Skill Points).

+ 0-2.B. MAPS OF TOWNS, DUNGEONS & THE WORLD +
+                                              +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ At first the only maps you can access (by pressing [SQUARE]) are those in each
  town.

  + Map Icons for stores:
    - Shield .................... Armour.
    - Crossed Swords ............ Weapons.
    - Chimaera Wing ............. Trail supplies.

  + Other Map Icons:
    - Grey brick 'container' .... A well.
    - "Candlestick" Cross ....... Church where you can save.
    - INN ....................... Place to stay "until evening" OR "overnight".
    - Mug with "suds" ........... Tavern; called a "Pub" in this game.
    - Gold circle (coin) ........ Bank (only available in three places).

  + Because the Town maps are "bird's eye" views, it isn't always possible to see
    where you need to go.
    - The exterior of Trodain Castle is probably the worst example of a "Town Map".

    - This FAQ includes an approximation of each town map with buildings, booths,
      etc., identified.
      * In Towns Maps:
        > When you press [SQUARE], your location is shown by a red arrow pointing
          in the direction the party is looking.
        > However, if you press [SQUARE] when inside a building, a red star
          indicates which building you are in.

~ In dungeons, you must find the Treasure Chest which contains the dungeon map.

  + Only one floor at a time is shown.
    - When the "ups and downs" of the stairs and ladders are confusing, maps are
      available in this FAQ.

~ You eventually receive a World Map but not at the beginning of the Hero's Quest.

  + Marcello of Maella Abbey will give you that map.
    - When you have it, you can access it IN THE FIELD ONLY.

  + Pressing [SQUARE] displays:
    - Part of the region you are in (a close up view) with your party's location
      at the center.
    - By pressing [X], you can see the whole map.

  + The cursor (red arrow) shows your location on either the close up or the
    whole map.

~ Later, near the final battles, you get the power to fly.
  + When you use the World Map after landing, a red star shows your APPROXIMATE
      location (it's nowhere near as accurate as the red arrow).

+  0-2.C. THE HERO'S TEAM  +
+                          +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ VIDEO: Opening scenes (after viewing of the damage done to Trodain Castle) for
  the beginning of the Quest introduce the current team members.

1. MUNCHIE:
   + The story begins with a view of a small mouse-like critter.
     - It is tan-colored with a black mane going all the way down from its head,
       along its spine to its tail; the tail ends in a black fuzzball.
     - MUNCHIE CAN BE A VITAL MEMBER OF HERO'S TEAM.

   + Munchie looks across the field to see a town with a column of black smoke
     rising from it.
     - Munchie appears to be scared and runs under and over tree trunks.
     - When it stops, it is looking at the frog-king who snarls at it.
     - It runs to Hero and climbs into his pocket.

2. YANGUS:
   + Someone else has joined the group.
     - He's a rather fat man and is dressed in baggy pants and vest.
     - His name is YANGUS, a rough-and-ready rascal.
       * King Trode calls him a "low life".

~ VIDEO (continued):
  + Trode starts looking for Princess Medea BUT...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  THE FIRST BATTLE +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ The FIRST BATTLE begins as Slimes attack.

  + You are given the choices (as in all battles) to:
     Fight ......... Start the battle.
     Flee .......... Run away from the battle (you don't get EXP (experience) if
                     you do, but sometimes it IS worthwhile).
     Intimidate .... Try to scare the enemies (it may or may not work).
                     And you don't get EXP for any enemies that flee.
     Tactics ....... How you want team members to act in battles.

  + In this battle, choose "Fight".

    - Choices once the fight starts:
      * Attack ...... With currently equipped weapon.
      * Abilities ... Each character develops skill as the game progresses.
                  ... The skills are specific to a particular type of weapon.
      * Spells ...... As the game progresses, each ally develops their own spells.
      * Items ....... Access those items that are in that individual's inventory.
              ....... Can equip another weapon IF it's in the person's inventory.
      * Defend ...... On guard for a single turn.
      * Psyche Up ... Once (one turn), (for the battle) add 5 points to Attack.
                  ... Twice (two turns) add 20 to Attack.
                  ... Three times, add 50 to Attack.
                  ... Four times, add 100 to Attack.

~ BATTLE STRATEGY (to keep this battle as short as possible):
  + YANGUS hits hard enough that he can almost always defeat a Slime with one blow.
    - Hero isn't so strong.

    - There are three slimes:
      * Have YANGUS hit the one on the left.
      * Have HERO hit the one on the right.

    - That should leave two slimes:
      * Have YANGUS hit the one that was in the middle.
      * Have HERO hit the same one as before.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  AFTER THE BATTLE +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ After every Battle (except when all enemies flee), the party receives EXP
  (experience points toward leveling up) and Gold Pieces (G.):
  + Each type of monster provides varying amounts of EXP and G.

  + When the slimes are defeated:
    - Yangus & Hero receive 3G (gold pieces).
      * You should have a total of 53 G.
    - Yangus & Hero each receive 3 EXP.
    - You may also pick up a treasure chest with a Medicinal Herb in it.

WARNING! WARNING!
  + EVEN IF YOU GET HURT, DON'T SLEEP AT THE INN UNTIL TRODE TELLS YOU TO!!!
    - You will not fight any more battles before then.
    - Save your money.

~ Trode again looks for his daughter, Medea.
  + When she turns up, you realize the curse has affected her too.
    - Medea has been changed into a white horse, now being used to pull the wagon.
      * Not a very dignified activity for a Princess!
      * King Trode calls the wagon a "carriage".
      * Low-Life like Yangus may call it a "cart".

NOTE: By pressing you can talk to members of your team.

      + They'll tell you what the team is currently supposed to be doing.

        - They may also give advice (?!) not always politely!

~ A view of the sky shows that it is sunset, time to go to the town.

  + In the game there is day (sky is blue with clouds) and night (a starry sky).
    - There is also a period of time in between, for sunset and dawn.
    - The sun (or the moon) move in the sky to show time is passing to show
      that time is passing.

  + Even though the game may suggests an urgency of doing things:
    - For example, You have to get to Abbot Francisco's dwelling "immediately"
      in order to save his life...
    - You can take as many of the game's "days" as you need to do it.
      * Nothing serious will happen until you get there.

~ VIDEO:
  + Trode drives the wagon, Hero and Yangus walk beside it.
   - As they travel along the road, Screen Credits show the members of the team
     that developed the game.
     * Cannot Skip these Videos.
     * In this FAQ: only really important information will be included in the
       description of a VIDEO.

~ The group arrives at the town of Farebury and enter by the West Gate.

  + People stare at them as they travel through the town.
    - They pass by the Inn, a stall for selling armour, and the remains of a
      burning house.

    - People who see them gather to gossip.

  + They end up in the "Courtyard" of the town near the other exit, the South
    Gate.
    - Trode says that "Master Rylus" knows Dhoulmagus and may be able to direct
      them to where Dhoulmagus can be found.
    - Dhoulmagus was the one who put the curse on Trode and Medea.

  + Trode remembers, just before Dhoulmagus turned up, King Trode had settled on
    the engagement of Princess Medea to the Prince of Argonia.
    - More later on this subject.

+ 1-1.B. FINDING TREASURES IN FAREBURY +
+                                      +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ The game has certain objects that usually hold items and treasures.

  + To teach you what these look like, there are a number of such treasures in
    the upstairs of the Farebury Inn.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  TREASURES AT THE INN +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ From the Courtyard, go through the arch to the left, past the burning house
  and into the Inn.
  + Go upstairs and talk to the girl standing in the doorway.
    - Follow her advice to discover the types of objects used throughout the
      game to hold goodies.
      * Even though a cabinet (dresser/cupboard) may be in a room, it may be empty.
        > Check, because you never know.
      * Only some of the Jars and Barrels contain items.
        > Break all just in case.
    - Press [X] at each object to get the treasures:
      * Brown barrels.
      * Grey jars.
      * Bags hanging on the walls.
      * Clothing dressers/cupboards (called "cabinets" in this FAQ).
      * Treasure Chests (T.Chests in this FAQ).
        > NOTE: some T.Chests can only be opened with a key (more later).
   - Inn upstairs:
       1st cabinet ................. Holy Water
       2nd cabinet ................. Plain Clothes (low level armour)
       T.Chest ..................... Chimaera Wing (warps you to places you have
                                     already visited).
     ! Bookshelf ................... Read book.
       3rd cabinet ................. Cypress Stick (low level weapon)
       4th cabinet .................  (empty)
       Hanging Sack 1 .............. Antidotal Herb
       Hanging Sack 2 .............. Medicinal Herb
     ! Read the books you find on bookshelves throughout the game.
       * You can only read books that have a slant on the shelf.
         > Even then, not all books will prove of interest.
       * The books contain helpful information.
       * But more importantly, many of them contain recipes for the ALCHEMY POT.
~ Talk to every person you see.
  + They tell of immediate things (such as why there is a burning house).
  + Give clues to things of future use (such as using PSYCHE UP in battle).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  TREASURE IN THE REST OF TOWN +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ Explore the town, talking to everyone you meet.
  RECOMMEND: Do it in the following order so that you end up inside the Tavern:
  NOTE: The Tavern's back door is close to the Jar at the back of Kalderasha's
        house (number 7 on the map).
        - The door to Kalderasha's is locked.
  + Total G found = 52 making a grand total of 105 G
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ SUMMARY OF INFORMATION FROM TOWNSPEOPLE +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ A jester was in town but he wasn't entertaining.
  + One thought he was creepy.
    - Another said he kept saying "Pity! Pity! Pity!"
  + Master Rylus (our Hero is looking for him) had an argument with the Jester.
    - Next thing there is a fire and old man Rylus dies.
  + One thought the fire was arson,
    - Another said that Rylus was murdered.
~ One person says to "Psyche Up" to do more damage in a fight.
  + Another tells you of a Thief's key.
~ A man by the name of Kalderasha used to be a fantastic fortune teller, but
  lately he hasn't been very good.
  + One person is confused:
    - Did Kalderasha become useless as a fortune teller because he began to
      drink?
    - Did he begin drinking because he could no longer use his fortune telling
      abilities?
  + Valentina isn't really Kalderasha's daughter!?
~ One person refers to the engagement.
  + Since then nothing has been heard from the Kingdom (Trodain) where the
    Prince's fiancee is from.
+  1-1.C. GETTING STARTED  +
+                          +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
~ You should have just broken the barrels inside the Tavern.
  + walk toward the dark man at the bar (named Kalderasha).
+ MEET KALDARAHSA, FORTUNE TELLER +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
VIDEO:
  + Kalderasha seems angry because the barman calls his fortune-telling
    "HAPHAZARD."
  + He says ALL fortune telling is haphazard.
~ When the video is finished, talk to Kalderasha again.
  + Kalderasha acts as if Hero is someone special: "Yes! Yesss!"
  + Your conversation is interrupted.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ MONSTER IN TOWN +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
VIDEO: A young man at the door to the bar yells:
  + "There's a monster in town."
    - Everyone except Kalderasha runs out.
    - If you talk to Kalderasha again, he says he's lost interest and to come
      back tomorrow.
  + When you try to go down the steps directly to the plaza, a man blocks the
    way.
    - Talk to him to find out more.
  + You'll have to go down the steps near the WEST GATE or the steps at the
    SOUTH-WEST CORNER of town to get to the plaza.
VIDEO: Trouble...
  + The monster is TRODE.
    - A group of townspeople start throwing stones at him.
      * Medea moves between the townspeople and her father.
      * Yangus picks Trode up and puts him in the wagon.
    - You leave by the SOUTH GATE.
      * Trode says "Let's move on."
  + Before you can leave the area, a young girl asks you to wait.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+
+ WAIT! +
+-+-+-+-+
VIDEO:
  + Valentina, daughter of Kalderasha, asks for your help and tells you to meet her
    at her home beside the well.
    - Go meet her and she starts to tell you of her dream.
      * Kalderasha walks in and gets angry.
      * He says he's going to bed and tells Valentina to show Hero to the door.
  + Find out why Kalderasha is so angry.
    - After Valentina finishes her story, agree to find the "Crystal Ball."
~ Before leaving her house:
  + Look for the items in Kalderasha's house, including what's in the kitchen.
    - Barrel  ...... 7 G
    - Cabinet ...... 4 G    (Total is now 116 G if you haven't spent anything.)
~ Go out of the West Gate (the South Gate is locked) and talk to Trode.
  + He'll send you to sleep at the Inn.
  + Several times, when you're sleeping, you get a glimpse of Trode tinkering with
    something.
  NOTE: Choose how long you sleep at the Inns (unless its already night time):
        + Stay Overnight.
        + Rest until evening.
  CAUTION!
        + Night Monsters are usually more difficult to defeat.
          - And the enemy party usually is larger.
===================================================================================
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+                             +
+ 1-2.D. WHY HEAL AT THE INN? +
+                             +
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
~ The main reason: sleeping at the Inn restores both HP & MP to the Maximum.
  + When a character has enough experience (EXP) to go up a level:
    - Leveling up is automatic.
   BUT
    - NEITHER HP NOR MP ARE RESTORED TO THE NEW MAXIMUM LEVELS.
  + Medicinal Herb restores up to 35 HP.
    - But items for restoring MP are not available for a long time into the game.
~ Costs less:
  + 6 G for each stay at the Farebury Inn (3 G. each).
    - Later, when you have more members in your party, prices at inns increase
      because the cost is based on how many are in the party.
  + Costs 8 G for EACH Medicinal Herb which doesn't restore MP.
~ CAUTION:
  + Increasing a Level (any party member):
    - DOES NOT FILL THE HP OR MP GAUGES.
     * Level 3 is the first to give MP points to Hero.
   - You WILL need to stay at the Inn after Hero gets to Level 3.
   - I recommend staying at an Inn after each increase in Experience Level.
     * AND SAVING YOUR GAME.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ SAVING THE GAME +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ If you are not aware how important is saving your game...
  + You haven't played many RPGs (Role Playing Games).
~ NOTHING! repeat NOTHING! can be more annoying than:
  + For all your party members to be defeated in a battle.
  + And to lose ALL the progress you've made since the last save.
~ In this game you can only save at a Church or at a place where a priest or
  nun is standing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ THE SAVE MENU +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ On the town map you see an icon that looks something like a gold candlestick
  (the cross's arms are turned up).
~ When you talk to the Priest or Nun:
  + 'Confession'  records your progress in the game.
  + 'Divination'  shows how many EXP each character needs to get to the next
                  EXP level.
  + 'Resurrection' allows you to restore a character who has 'fallen' in battle
                  (HP = zero).
                  - If someone dies you have to lug around a coffin!
                    > When dead, the person does not get EXP.
                  - IT'S EXPENSIVE.
                  - Two spells can be used to resurrect a fallen character:
                     ZING ...... works about half the time.
                     KAZING .... always works.
  + 'Purification' cures poison.
                  - Not as expensive as Resurrection, but costs rise.
  + 'Benediction' removes a cursed item (weapon OR armour) that is equipped.
                  - Cost is fairly expensive.
                  - Hero is least affected by curses of any kind.
       information.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+                        +
+ 1-2.A. FAREBURY STORES +
+                        +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
~ There are three types of stores in Farebury.
  + One that sells trail supplies.
    - These are items of healing, such as Medicinal Herbs, Antidotal Herbs, and
      Chimaera Wings.
    - I refer to it as Trail Supplies because everything, including weapons,
      armour, etc., can be referred to as an 'item').
    - All healing items can be used in the Field (all locations outside of
      towns), in dungeons and/or in battles.
      * But it can only be used in Battle, if the individual has the item in
        his/her personal inventory.
  + Weapon shops.
    - These sell weapons for the characters in the party.
      * As a general rule, each character must use his own type of weapon,
        although there is some overlap.
         HERO:    Swords, Spears & Boomerangs.
         YANGUS:  Clubs, Axes, & Scythes.
         JESSICA: Staves (like a Wizard Staff), Whips, & Knives.
         ANGELO:  Rapiers, Bows, and Staves.
      NOTE: As Jessica's knife skills improve, she can learn to use certain
            swords.
    - As you progress through the game, weapons become stronger and stronger.
      * However, some of the best weapons can only be gotten under certain
        circumstance.
  + Armour shops (the spelling used in the game for "armor" is British).
    - There are four types of armour:
      * Body coverings, such as CHAIN MAIL.
      * Head coverings (Helmets), such as LEATHER HAT.
      * Shields.
      * Accessories, such as RINGS, EARRINGS, BRACERS, etc.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  TRAIL SUPPLIES +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
 + Booth [10], the place where you can buy supplies for your journey is near the
   South Gate.
   - Supply stores are shown with the icon of a Wing (or feather).
   - Sometimes they are part of another store.
     * If so, the Wing icon will NOT show.
 + Supplies available in Farebury:
       _________________________
       | Medicinal Herb |  8 G | .... Restores 30 - 40 HP.
       | Antidotal Herb | 10 G | .... Cures poison.
       | Chimaera Wing  | 25 G | .... Flies you back to (visited) town locations.
       | Plain Clothes  | 30 G | .... Lowest level of defense for all allies.
       |________________|______|
  + Currently, HERO is wearing Plain Clothes.
  + All items can be placed in the ITEM BAG.
    - There is no limit to how many items you can keep in the bag.
      * Trail supplies may be limited to 99 of each item but there are rumors
        that more can be held (?! not known).
RECOMMEND:
  + You should have picked up a total of four Medicinal Herbs.
    - These will be in Hero's personal inventory.
    - Transfer two of them to Yangus's personal inventory.
  + During a battle, each character can access ONLY their own personal
    inventories.
    - No access to the Item Bag.
    - In an emergency, having a Medicinal Herb accessible may mean the
      difference between LIFE and DEATH!
+  THE BUY SCREEN +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ When you talk to the owner of a store, his inventory displays.
  + Purchase screen:
    - At the top are the tabs: BUY; SELL; and a tab showing how much gold you
      have.
    - Below that, icons of four items for sale are displayed on the left half of
      the screen
      * Icons of the party members are on the right half of the screen.
      * On the left of the items' icons is a gauge:
        > If it is dark, only four items are available.
        > If the lower part is light colored, more than four items are for sale.
      * Below the pictures is the total number of items available, such as 1/4
        (first of four) or 1/6 (first of six) or 3/6 (third of six).
    - Pictures of the items for sale are on the left with the  quantity currently
      being bought (always starts at '1') and the price.
+ 1-2.B. ALCHEMY POT (INTRO) +
+                            +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
~ When you sleep at the Inn for the first time, you get a peek at Trode hammering
  something.
  + This is the ALCHEMY POT he is repairing.
  + Trode finishes repairing the Alchemy Pot on the Ferry between PORT PROSPECT
    and PEREGRIN QUAY (third and fourth places on the journey).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ WHAT IS AN ALCHEMY POT? +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ This is a large grey pot decorated with jewels which can be used to transform
  selected items into something else.
  + For example, the best Boomerang for Hero cannot be bought.
    - By putting a METAL KING SPEAR and a RAZOR WING BOOMERANG in the pot,
      it can be made.
    - You'll be able to make that weapon later.
  + Items used are listed in a 'recipe' (usually) and are called 'ingredients'.
    - As the hero and party progress through the game, more recipes and more
      and better ingredients can be found.
    - Not all recipes are complete (they will be in this FAQ).
~ It seems to takes varying amounts of time to make a recipe.
  + From about a half dozen fights to several nights of sleeping at an Inn.
  + If you listen carefully, you will hear a pinging Chime.
    - This signal comes while the party is walking through the Field or a dungeon.
      * You cannot access the Alchemy Pot in a dungeon with one exception (Castle
         Trodain).
      * It is easy to miss the chime, so every now and then, check the Pot to see
        how it's doing.
    - When you hear the chime, the item has been completed.
      * Don't waste any time; put new ingredients in the pot.
      * It really pays to keep the Alchemy Pot busy ALL the time.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ INGREDIENTS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ Many items (healing, weapons, armor, etc.) can be used in a recipe,
  + Some are worth it, others are not.
   NOTE: FOR A FULL LIST OF RECIPES CHECK OUT THE "DQ-8 ALCHEMY RECIPES" FAQ on
         cheatcodes.com.
         + This Walkthrough FAQ lists recipes only when the ingredients are
           available AND when the item is worth making.
~ "Poor quality" items in stores.
  + You might ask why sell such poor levels of goods as the "Plain Clothes,"
    the "Bandit's Grass Skirt," or the "Cypress Stick?"
    - They can be used in the Alchemy Pot to create better items and equipment.
    - More information and appropriate recipes in the next FAQ when the Alchemy Pot
      is available for use.
WARNING!
  + Some things are not worth the time or effort to make.
    - This FAQ does not use all possible recipes.
      * To find more, see the above FAQ (ALCHEMY RECIPES).
    - A few recipes actually make something of less value (be warned)!
    - But you will still need to make your own decisions.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ GETTING YOUR FIRST RECIPE +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ You can pick up this recipe just before you leave town but at night ONLY; if
  you want to get it earlier:
STEP 1: After your first stay at the inn (when told to do so by Trode).
        - Go to the Armour Booth, and go behind the counter to talk to the owner.
          * He asks if you want something special.
          * Promises to sell it to you for 600 G.
STEP 2: You have to have talked to Valentina and accepted her request before you
        can do this step.
        - Go again to the Armour Booth, behind the counter and talk to the owner.
          * He tells you he's just sold out.
          * He'll tell you to come back in the evening.
        - Go outside and fight until the sky turns red
        OR...
        - Go to the Inn and sleep until evening.
        - Talk to the man again.
          * He has sold the last one but he tells you to go to the Bell Tower at
            the Church in the middle of the night.
            > He says there's something special there.
STEP 3: Go to the tower in the Church AT NIGHT.
   - Climb the ladder and find a piece of paper.
     * It's a recipe for a Thief's Key.
       > This key unlocks most T.Chests (treasure chests) but not all.
     * You'll need an Iron Nail and a Bronze Knife and some time to make the key.
       > You get both in Peregrin Quay (the fourth town/village you reach).
+                                +
+ 1-2.C. UPGRADING HERO & YANGUS +
+                                +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
~ As with most RPGs, the stronger the characters on the team, the easier it is to
  get through the game without being defeated.
  + There are people who want to "get on with the Game".
    - Problem with that is that you may have to spend a lot of time:
      * Reviving your characters (and that COSTS).
      * Doing portions of the game over again... and maybe again....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  STARTING STATS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ Starting Stats of HERO & YANGUS:
   PERSON   | LEVEL | HP | MP | SPELLS | STRENGTH | EXP FOR NEXT LEVEL
 ___________|_______|____|____|________|__________|___________________
   HERO     |   1   | 22 |  0 |  none  |    8     |   14
            |       |    |    |        |          |
   YANGUS   |   1   | 30 |  0 |  none  |   11     |   12
 ___________|_______|____|____|________|__________|___________________
~ As you can see, Yangus is stronger and has more HP than Hero.
  + That's the reason for improving Hero's defense (and resilience) first.
    - In battles, it doesn't take many hits to reduce Hero's HP to quite low.
  + Before leaving FAREBURY for the first time, you should have 116 G.
    * See the RECOMMENDs above (with the Armour Shop and Weapon shop lists)
      for purchases.
  + After getting the defense equipment, save your money to buy:
    - GIANT MALLET for Yangus.
    - BOOMERANG for Hero.
   RECOMMEND: Sell the sets of Plain Clothes you have found.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ UPGRADING YOUR TEAM +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ RECOMMEND:
  + WHEN EITHER OF THE CHARACTERS REACHES ANOTHER EXP LEVEL.
    - GO TO THE INN SO HP AND MP CAN BE INCREASED TO THE CURRENT MAX.
    - SAVE!!!
~ HERO:
  + When he reaches EXP Level 3, Hero learns his first spell: HEAL.
    - Stay close to Farebury until this happens.
      * And watch HP while battling.
    - You'll need HEAL before you go to the WATERFALL HUT.
  + When Hero reaches EXP Level 4, Hero learns SQUELCH (cures poison).
  + At EXP Level 6, he learns EVAC (exit dungeon from any location inside).
~ Other spells learned as Hero's experience Levels increase:
    - Level 11: ........... SIZZ (Fire attack, group).
    - Level 18: ........... MIDHEAL (restore 75-95 HP, one ally).
    - Level 20: ........... SIZZLE (stronger Fire attack, group).
    - Level 27: ........... FULLHEAL (restores max HP, one ally)
    - Level 29: ........... ZING (50% chance of resurrection).
    - Level 32: ........... KASIZZLE (Fire attack, group).
~ YANGUS:
  + He only learns magic spells by building his skills.
    - The first time he gains Skill Points is at Level 4.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ SKILLS & SKILL POINTS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ As characters gain EXP levels:
  + They receive "Skill Points" they can use to build one or more of five
    "Skills".
    - The first time Skill Points are awarded is when Hero & Yangus each reach
      EXP Level 4.
  + Each of these skill can be built up to 100 Points.
    - But it is unlikely you'll build all of them to 100 before the finish
      of the game.
  + HERO's Skills:
       Swords
       Spears
       Boomerangs
       Fisticuffs
       Courage
  + YANGUS:
        Axes
        Clubs
        Scythes
        Fisticuffs
        Humanity
~ The first three of the skills relate to equipped weapons.
  + Access to Boomerang skills, for example, requires the Boomerang to be
    equipped.
    - That's why you need (as soon as you can) one of each type of weapon in
      the character's personal inventory.
      * Then you can switch weapons in the middle of Battle if you need a
        particular skill.
~ The FISTICUFFS Skill:
  + The 'FISTICUFFS' SKILL MEANS NO WEAPONS CAN BE EQUIPPED.
    > Unless you like fist fights, you may wish to leave developing this set of
      skills until last).
    - To unequip all weapons:
      * Select the equipped weapon in the character's inventory by pressing [X].
      * Select 'Transfer' and transfer the weapon to the Item Bag.
      * Select the weapon in the Item Bag and transfer it BACK to the character
        (because you may need it in a battle).
      * Select 'NO' when asked if you want to equip it.
  + Each person's set of Fisticuff skills is unique.
~ The fifth skill is specific to each individual.
  - The skills that can be developed for Hero through courage (or Yangus through
    Humanity) are very valuable.
RECOMMEND:
  + There is a specific sequence of building skills that provides more benefit in
    the earlier parts of the game.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ RECOMMENDED SKILL DEVELOPMENT +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
~ The first level Hero gets skill points is EXP Level 4 and he should be at EXP
  Level 7 or 8 by the time you get to Alexandria.
  + He generally doesn't get more than two, three, or four each time he Levels Up.
    - So it may take more than one Level Up to increase a particular skill.
  + Hero gets 14 Skill points by the time he gets to Level 9 (Yangus gets 24).
    - By the time he gets to Level 9, he should have the first two of the
      following skills, and be building towards the third.
  + SKILLS NEEDED TO BEGIN WITH:
    - +5 attack ........ When equipped with a SWORD.
    - ZOOM ............. Warp from anywhere in the Field to already visited towns.
    - DRAGON SLASH ..... More damage (with extra damage to dragons).
  NOTE: In the following charts, LV = Experience Level; SP = Skill Points.
  + Process/sequence of assigning Skill Points:
       |____|____|_________|_________|___________________________________
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~ Yangus gets a total of 24 Points by the time he gets to Level 9.

  + By Level 9, he should have the first four of the following skills and be
    started on the fifth:

  + SKILLS NEEDED TO BEGIN WITH:
    - WHISTLE .......... Brings battles to you.
    - +5 attack ........ When equipped with a CLUB.
    - HEAL ............. It is nice to have two people with this spell.
    - HELM SPLITTER .... Reduce an enemy's defense.
    - +5 attack ........ When equipped with an AXE.

+  NOTORIOUS MONSTERS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Although these are shown on the map, it is TOO SOON for you to go looking
  for them.
  - At your current HP levels, they are literally lethal.

  - In daylight, you can see these monsters in the field from some distance away.

~ DANGER!!!
  + Avoid tackling these, at least until you have Jessica & Angelo in your party.
    - That's when you'll need the Monster Coins as Weapons & Armour are much more
      expensive (1700 G!).
    - This FAQ will tell your team is strong enough to tackle them.

~ FOR NOW THEY ARE TOO POWERFUL:
  + A single blow takes half or more of a person's HP.

  + SO, if they catch you, FLEE!!!
    - YES, I AM SERIOUS.

    - You just possibly MIGHT defeat one (not likely but possible), but at the
      current levels, it isn't worth the effort.
      * So FLEE!!!

+ 1-3.B. MONSTERS IN THE FAREBURY REGION +
+                                        +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ Some of the monsters are familiar from earlier Dragon Warrior and Dragon Quest
  games.
  + But the graphics have much improved.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ WHISTLE MAGIC +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ WHISTLE is a skill learned by Yangus when his HUMANITY Skill Points = 4.

~ WHISTLE:
  + This skill saves SO MUCH TIME.
    - Useful when you need to build Levels AND/OR get Gold.

  + You access WHISTLE through the tab for MAGIC in the Main Menu.

    - Stand in one place and as soon as a Battle is finished, Yangus can WHISTLE
      up another.

    - You don't have to wander all around the landscape to find another Battle.

    - Each Battle will be different as the number and mixture of monsters will
      vary.

  + Watch HP & MP levels so you can go back and heal at the Inn.
    - Having the church minister resurrect a fallen ally IS EXPENSIVE!

    - Also, as EXP Levels rise, the only way to fill the MP guage is by sleeping
      at an inn.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  MONSTER LIST +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Here is the list of Farebury Region Monsters.
  + In the list below, each monster has a number.
  + This number (1 through 285) is the same used in the game in the Battle Records
    of Monsters Defeated.
    - This is found under the Main Menu tab MISC.
    - If a number is missing in the list below (e.g., #8), it is because that
       monster does not appear in the Farebury Region.
  + Monsters only drop items occasionally (don't rely on it).

  + Monsters inside the Waterfall Cave are harder to defeat than those outside the
    cave.

  + Headings in the chart:
    - 'HP' is the amount of HP the monster has.

    - 'EXP' is the amount of experience each person in the party receives after
       defeating one of the monsters:
       * For example, one slime gives each person 1 EXP, three give 3 EXP.

    - 'GOLD' is the amount received from EACH defeated monster.
       * For example, if you defeat three Slimes, you'll get 3 G.

    - 'ITEMS DROPPED':
       * Commonly dropped by a particular monster, but not every time you fight
         them.

    - 'ITEMS DROPPED RARELY':
       * The items themselves are not rare (though usually less common at the
         particular stage of the game).
       * They may be dropped by the monster but not very often.

NOTE: AMOR SECO ESSENCE (dropped rarely by the SLIME and the FIRE SPIRIT)
      restores 60-70 HP.
      - But it will be quite a while before you can buy it (at 120 G).
      - So, except in dire straits, save it up for now.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ BATTLING NIGHT MONSTERS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

WARNING! WARNING!

  + Remember that night monsters are more difficult to defeat!!!

  + Those outside the SOUTH GATE are a little less difficult than those outside
    the WEST GATE.

~ If you want to WHISTLE up some night monsters, sleep until Evening at the Inn.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ MONSTER DIFFICULTY LEVELS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Until Yangus has the WHISTLE magic, Your party will have to wander around to
  find monsters to battle.

  + With WHISTLE, go to the location with the monster difficulty you want, as
    described below.

~ Difficulty levels of the monsters you battle:

  + The further away from the town/village, the stronger the monsters.

  + If you stay close to the road:
    - Battles usually have the weaker monsters in the region.
    - There are usually fewer monsters in a enemy party.

  + The further away from the road:
    - The enemy party tends to include stronger monsters.
   AND...
    - The larger the number of monsters in the enemy party (up to six in the
      Farebury Region).

+                              +
+ 1-3.C. ACCESSING INFORMATION +
+                              +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ All information about the characters in Dragon Quest VIII and their activities
  is contained in the Main Menu.
  + Press [SQUARE].

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  MAIN MENU TABS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ The Main Menu has four tabs: ITEMS, MAGIC, ATTRIBUTES, MISC.

~ ITEMS:
  + The 'Items Screen' displays the current characters in your party.
    - There are four slots because eventually there will be four characters:
      * Hero, Yangus, Jessica, Angelo.
    - In each slot:
      * A 'photo' of the character together with their current HP and MP and the
        items currently in their personal inventory.
      * The default setting for this menu: showing Hero's inventory.
    - Move the cursor down to each person to see what each one has.

  + Below the four slots is the icon of a 'bag' which will hold anything and
    everything that is collected (no limit).
    + Several shopkeepers say, when putting an item into the bag, "Well, there's
      always room in your bag."

~ MAGIC:
  + This screen shows the party members on the left, with the spells they
    currently have on the right.
    - As you move the cursor down to highlight any member, on the right appears
      the list of SPELLS and the MP needed for each spell.
      * The icon beside the spell shows its type (e.g., a boot means that spell
        can be used in the field).

      NOTE: WHISTLE needs zero MP.

~ ATTRIBUTES:
  + You can use ATTRIBUTES to find out:
    - What Spells and Skills each member of the party has learned.
      > Press [X] to access their information.
      > Press [LEFT] or [RIGHT].
    - you can also see how many skill points the character has gained for each
      skill.

~ MISC.

  + MISC. is short for "miscellaneous" meaning "of mixed types".
    - That is: anything that doesn't fit under the three other categories
      (Items, Magic or Attributes) goes here.

  + This tab allows a number of activities.
    - And the list grows longer through the game.
    - One item gives a list of all monsters defeated to the current point in
      the game.
      * A set of '????' in the defeated monsters screen indicates that you
        haven't yet met up with/defeated that monster.

  + At the top of the MISC. list is HEAL ALL.
    - When you press [X] on this item, the program uses the most efficient
      method (i.e., least MP used) to heal all in the party who need it.
      * Once Yangus has HEAL, his MP will be used first before Hero's.
      * When you have all four members in the party, this usually means that:
        > Angelo will be the one to do the healing as he has more heal spells and
          more MP.
    - Using HEAL ALL also allows the curing of poison (a different magic spell
      called SQUELCH).
    - The HEAL ALL choice saves a lot of time as you don't have to heal each
      person on an individual basis.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+                           +
+  1-3.D. BATTLE STRATEGIES +
+                           +
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ This is just a general battle strategy guide rather than specific to a
  particular monster.

  + At the start of the game:
    - Most monsters require two (or more) hits to defeat them.
      * A couple of levels up should enable Hero to defeat a Slime with one hit.

    - Newer monster as you move through the regions will also require more hits
      than those you have fought for a while.
      * For example, the Fire Spirit need three or four hits at first.

~ At the beginning, all characters should gang up on each monster to more quickly
  reduce the number of monsters they are fighting against.
  + This means fewer monsters hitting your characters.

  + IF one character can hit hard enough, have them tackle a monster on their own.

~ First, take out monsters:

  + That do the most damage,
  OR...
  + Ones that have a spell,
  OR...
  + Those that have a skill that puts a character out of commission for one or
    more turns.

      * Bubble Slime .......... may poison a character.

      * Lips .................. may put a character out of commission for one turn
                                by licking their face (gross!).

      * Satyr ................. Can blow its horn to the tune of "Counting Sheep";
                                this may put ONE OR MORE characters to sleep.

      * Dancing Devil ......... Does the 'SULTRY DANCE' which may cause a character
                                to dance uncontrollably for one turn.

+ 1-2.E. SUMMARY OF FAREBURY REGION TASKS +
+                                         +
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ You should:
  + Have already accepted the First Quest:
    - Find the Crystal Ball.

  + Already have Yangus's WHISTLE skill (Humanity = 4) and Hero's HEAL magic
    (EXP Level 3).

FURTHER TASKS:

  1. Continue to build Hero's and Yangus's skills for:
     + Yangus to get HEAL (Humanity = 10).
     + Hero to get ZOOM (courage = 8).

  2. Build Hero's and Yangus's skills further as Skill Points become available:
     + Yangus to get HELM SPLITTER (Axes = 6)
       - This skill will usually reduce a monster's defense.
       - Further hits on the monster do more damage.
       - Particularly useful with a single enemy, such as bosses and (later)
         Notorious Monsters.
     + Yangus to get HATCHET MAN (Axes = 19).
       - This Skill doesn't work every time, but when it does, it takes out a
         monster immediately.
     + Hero to get DRAGON SLASH (Swords = 9).
       - Hits dragons (and other monsters) harder.

  3. Go to the Waterfall Hut and take on the First SideQuest to find the grey-
     bearded man's Toolbag.

  4. Go to Lone Red Tree to find the Bag.
     + At the same time:
       - Bring Hero's & Yangus's EXP Levels to at Least 5.
       - Collect 80 G from a nearby T.Chest.

  5. Return the Bag to Waterfall Hut and collect your reward (8 Plain Cheese for
     Munchie's battle skills).

  6. Enter the Waterfall Cave:
     + Find a Leather Hat and a Copper Sword.

     + Inside the Cave, experience levels should increase to 6 and Hero will then
       learn EVAC.

     + (Optional) Battle the Lesser Boss: Hammerhood Guard.

     + Battle the main Boss: GEYZER to get the Crystal Ball.

  7. Return the Crystal Ball to Kalderasha.

  8. Get ready to go to Alexandria Region.
     + Make sure you have the best trail supplies and equipment.

~ AFTER GETTING HERO & YANGUS TO LEVEL 3, SAVE!

  + Then go to the WATERFALL HUT.
    - The hut is above WATERFALL CAVE and behind the hill with the Waterfall.
    - Just before the bridge turn right and go around the pond to the cliff,
      then walk to the path.

~ Completing this side quest will bring the EXP levels of both Yangus & Hero
  to the point where they are ready to tackle the WATERFALL CAVE monsters.

===================================================================================

+ 1-4.A THE WATERFALL HUT +
+                         +
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET CHEESE FOR MUNCHIE AT THIS STAGE OF THE GAME.

  + DURING BATTLE (cheese must be in Hero's personal inventory):
    - Select 'Items' and USE 'Plain Cheese' to feed Munchie.
    - Munchie delivers 6-10 hit points of fire-based damage to all enemies.
    - He uses Hero's turn to do this.
    - Other types of cheese cause more damage (when you can get them).
      * They also can be sold for gold.

~ INCREASING LEVELS ON THE SIDEQUEST:

  + Level 4 (probably on the way to the red-leafed tree).
    - Have Yangus put 3 Skill Points to "Humanity".
    - Hero learns SQUELCH (cure poison).
      * Have Hero put 2 Skill Points to "Swords".

  + Level 5 (probably when returning to the Hut).
    - Have Yangus put 1 Skill point (total 4) to "Humanity" & 3 Skill Points to
      "Clubs".
      * Yangus gets WHISTLE.
    - Have Hero put 2 Skill points (total 4) to "Swords".
      * Hero gets +5 Attack when equipped with a sword.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ GETTING TO THE HUT +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

  + Approach the waterfall, but turn right before crossing the bridge and circle
    the pond (stay close) then walk along the cliff until you see the path.

  + Follow the path up onto Waterfall Hill and go into the hut there.
    - Get goodies from the hanging sacks.
    - The grey-bearded person in the hut tells Hero to go to the Red-leafed Tree
      and find his Tool Bag.
    - You can see the tree from the top of the Hill.

~ Getting to the Red-leafed Tree:
  + At the bottom of the path up to the Hut, turn LEFT.
    - Go along a small cliff and turn toward the water.
    - Use the bridge, then head north until you reach a path.
    - Follow the left-hand path until you reach the Red-leafed Tree.
      * Pick up the tool bag.

  + With the Tree at your back, head slightly East of South then into the corner
    of a cliff to find a T.Chest with 80 G.
    - Return to the Waterfall Hut.

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
  + If it's dark, on the way back you may be caught by the Dracky "Pain in the
    Neck".
    - FLEE!!!
      > He can take out half of a character's HP with one blow (at their current
        experience Levels).
      > The chance of surviving in this battle is so small, you might as well
        forget it for now.
      > You really DON'T want to do all the activities over again to get that
        Tool Bag.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  MUNCHIE IS SPECIAL +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ When you give the Toolbag to the grey-bearded man, he notices Munchie.
  + He tells you:
    - Munchie is no ordinary mouse.
    - Try giving him cheese in any battle.

~ When you have collected the Cheeses, leave the hut.
  + Use a Chimaera Wing to return to Farebury.
    - Heal at the Inn.
    - SAVE!!

  + You should have enough money to buy the Leather Armour for Hero.
    - Equip it.
    - Give the Wayfarer's Clothes to Yangus and equip that.

  + You may also have enough to buy the 'Giant Mallet' (you can sell the Grass
    Skirt if necessary).
    OR...
    - Use WHISTLE to fight enough battles to get the money you need.

~ RECOMMEND: Equip GIANT MALLET (Yangus) to increase damage to monsters in the
             Waterfall Cave.

~ REMINDER: Don't buy a COPPER SWORD or a LEATHER HAT (for Hero).
             - YOU'LL GET THOSE IN THE CAVE.
             - Saving the money is worth the wait.

===================================================================================

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+                          +
+ 1-4.B THE WATERFALL CAVE +
+                          +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WATCH YOUR HP AS THE MONSTERS IN THE CAVE ARE MORE DANGEROUS.

~ Increasing Levels:

  + Level 6 (soon after entering the cave).

    - Hero learns EVAC (exit dungeon instantaneously).

    - Have Hero put all skill points to "Courage".
      * At Courage = 8, he gets ZOOM (works the same as a Chimaera Wing).

    - Have Yangus put Skill Points to:
      * First, "Humanity" for a total of 10.
      * Next, "Axes" (as many as he can)
        > Aim for 26 Axe points.

  + Level 7:

    - You'll probably get to this Level by the time you reach the BOSS, or from
      defeating the BOSS.

~ CAVE MAP.

  + This cave is fairly straight forward, so no map is included in the FAQ.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  CAVE LEVEL 1 +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ When you enter the cave, go along the path until you see a treasure chest at a
  split in the pathway.
  + This holds the Cave's map.
    - Consult the map by pressing [SQUARE].

  + Go right at the split.
    - Talk to the man wandering around.
    - Collect the items in the three chests in this part of the cavern.
      * Chimaera Wing, Medicinal Herb, and Leather Hat.
    - Equip the hat on HERO.

  + Continue until you get to the stairs down to the next level.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  CAVE LEVEL 2 +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ This is the Mini-Boss Level.

  + Check the map.
    - Your first goal is the northern-most Arrow (without steps).

  + Head for the place where a Hammerhood with large mallet waits.
    - Talk to him, choose "YES" and he decides not to fight you.
    - If you wish to fight (you CAN do it later), talk to him & choose "YES"
      again.
      * It is worth getting the EXP.

  + Continue on the path and when it splits, go left.
    - Talk to the Slime and tell him "YES" you believe him.
    - Continue along the same path and collect the COPPER SWORD.
    - Equip it on HERO.

  + Return to the split and take the other path.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  CAVE LEVEL 3 +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ This is the Boss Level.
  + Recommended Level to defeat the BOSS: at least 6, but 7 is better.

~ BOSS GEYZER:
  + His description:
    - Geyzer is a merman who lives below the waterfall.
    - On the monster List he is #261.
      * His stats: HP 173; MP 20.
      * He gives: 107 EXP; 108 G.
    - He is determined on revenge against the owner of the Crystal Ball because
      when the ball was thrown into the waterfall, it wounded his head.

  + He has four attacks:
    - "Cursed Mist":
      * Aims at both; does not affect Hero but Yangus usually misses one turn.
    - "Sizz" (fire):
      * Affects both characters (10-15 damage).
    - "Claw Swipe":
      * Affects one character for about 20-21 damage.
    - "Tail Swipe":
      * Affects one character for about 15 damage.

  + DON'T LET EITHER HERO'S OR YANGUS'S HP GET BELOW 25 POINTS.
    - Just keep hitting and heal when necessary.
    - Defeating Geyzer gets the party a Seed of Strength (use on HERO).

~ When you defeat Geyzer, he realizes that Hero is not the real owner of the
  Crystal Ball.
  + There is more conversation.
    - He keeps mixing up the first letters of words (for example 'rears many
      humours' for 'hears many rumours').
    - He recognizes Hero as the only person to escape Trodain Castle unharmed.
      * Confirms that Hero wasn't affected by the curse.
    - Then he gives Hero the Crystal Ball.
      * Gives a message for the real owner: DON'T THROW THINGS IN THE FALLWATER!

~ By this time, Hero should have the spell EVAC (EXP level 6).

  + Use it unless you want to battle your way out.

  + When outside the cave, use ZOOM (if you have it) or a Chimaera Wing to
    return to Farebury.
    - Hero gets 'ZOOM' at "Courage" = 8.

  NOTE 1: using ZOOM or a 'Chimaera Wing' indoors or in dungeons causes the Hero
          to hit his head on the ceiling!!!

  NOTE 2: When characters are at Level 7, some of the weaker monster will flee
          battles (if one does, there is no EXP or Gold from that monster).

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

DO NOT GO TO THE INN TO HEAL (you'll sleep at Kalderasha's House).

~ Finish the quest:

  + Return the Crystal Ball to Kalderasha.

VIDEO:
  + There is something Kalderasha doesn't want Valentina to know.
    - He threatens to smash the Crystal Ball.
    - Valentina says "STOP!" and that she already knows.

  + Apparently, Kalderasha foretold the death of Valentina's real parents.
    - He says he didn't care about anything but the vision.
    - Valentina says she wants to see his great powers.

  + You sleep and wake up on the beds upstairs.
    - Yangus is fast asleep when Hero wakes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  CLUES ABOUT DHOULMAGUS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

  + When you wake up:
    - Talk to Kalderasha (he has the Crystal Ball set up) and he will tell you
      what he sees in the Crystal Ball.
    - The Jester has broken his way through the Checkpoint leading to Alexandria.
      * The same Jester murdered Master Rylus.
      * The Jester has changed but he was Master Rylus' former student, Dhoulmagus.

  + Yangus doesn't wake up until he hears the name 'Dhoulmagus'.
    - When he ask Kalderasha to look for more:
      * Kalderasha find there's a chip out of his crystal ball with the message
        "Halfwit!"

  + Talk to:
    - Kalderasha and he tells Hero there is a small village beyond the Checkpoint.
    - Talk to Valentina (in the kitchen).
      - She asks Hero to tell Trode "Thank you."

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

RECOMMEND:

~ CERTAIN SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT ARE NEEDED BEFORE GOING TO ALEXANDRIA REGION.

  + If you don't have enough money, about 15 minutes of using WHISTLE should
    give you enough.
    - Go away from the road to get larger parties of enemies (near the Locked
      T.Chest is a good location).

  + Buy the BOOMERANG (420 G) before you head out.
    - Keep the COPPER SWORD in Hero's inventory.
      * you can switch weapons in a battle by selecting "Items" in the Fight
        Menu.
    - After switching weapons, HERO (or other character) still gets his fight
      turn.

~ Equipment:
   HERO: BOOMERANG (& COPPER SWORD), LEATHER ARMOUR, LEATHER HAT, LEATHER SHIELD.

   YANGUS: GIANT MALLET, WAYFARER'S CLOTHES, LEATHER HAT, LEATHER SHIELD.

   ITEM BAG: Medicinal Herbs (at least 10), Antidotal Herbs (at least 5),
             Chimaera Wings (4-6), BANDANA, etc.

~ SAVE!!!
  + Head for Alexandria.
    - Turn left at the first crossroads.
      * Turn right at the next to go to the "Checkpoint".

    - The Checkpoint looks as if someone got mad and blasted everything.

+ NEGATIVE EFFECTS FROM MONSTERS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ WATCH HP.

  + If knocked down by BEETLEBOY, character misses a turn.

  + FUNGHOUL's pink breath may send one or more characters to sleep to miss
    a turn.
    - When it hits with its head, it may also cause sleep.
      * If the person is already asleep, they may fall into a deeper sleep
        (lose an additional turn).

  + If FENCING FOX dances, character may lose a turn.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ TREASURE CHESTS ALONG THE WAY +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Go through the Checkpoint and across the bridge.

  + Just past the bridge on the right there is a narrow valley.
      * Go through that and turn right to find a T.Chest:
        > Equip the Slime Earrings on Hero (for now) to increase Defense.
        > These are 'Accessories' so you can equip them in addition to weapon,
          armour, headgear, and shield.

  + If you left Farebury in the morning, You will arrive at Alexandria Village at
    about Sunset (entrance is to the left of the road).

~ CHOOSE:

  + Pick up a T.Chest with 100 G (check HP and MP first).
 OR...
  + Go into the village.

~ Risks if you go to pick up the T.Chest:
  + Night Monsters are worse here.

  + If you choose to face them:

    1. Go past the archway to the village and around the corner of the cliff.

    2. When you see a low cliff to the right of your path, go to the left of the
       cliff and up onto the bank behind it.

    3. Walk to the right along the bank and around the end of the upper cliff.

    4. Head North until you reach a cliff dropping down to water.

    5. Turn East along the cliff edge to find the T.Chest containing 100 G.

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

  + Avoid or flee the black BULLFINCH known as Buffalo Bill a.k.a. Cowboy.
    - It has at least 180 HP and hits too hard for your party's present levels.

~ Go back and into the village.
  + You are greeted by two rather rude, small but fierce warriors:
    - BANGERZ and MASH.

    NOTE: the British know that this refers to a meal of large sausages (Bangers)
          and mashed potatoes (Mash).

  + FIGHT!!!
    - The fight is interrupted by an old woman, asking where are their manners?
      * She bonks them both on the top of the head.
      * And reminds them they were doing an errand for Jessica.

    - The boys run off to complete the errand.

~ It will be dark by the time Bangerz & Mash are sent away.
  + Rest at the Inn (you can't get into Jessica's house until morning).

  + SAVE!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ EVENTS IN THE VILLAGE +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

 FIRST:
  + Talk to the people to find out what happened.
    - Jessica's brother, Alistair, was murdered in the East Tower.

  + Talk to the young man on the way to Jessica's house.

  + Inside Jessica's House:
    - Explore the ground floor and talk to anyone you meet.

    - You'll find (in the kitchen):
      * 5 G
      * Plain Cheese

  + The stairs split half-way up and you can see a young man standing just beyond
     the stair rail.
    - Go upstairs and talk to that young man.
      * His name is Lorenzo, he's a poet, and he claims to be Jessica's fiance.
      * He's the son of the Chancellor of Argonia.
        - Do you remember that Medea is betrothed to the Prince of Argonia?

  + Talk to the woman sitting at the table to the right of the stairs.
    - She is Rosalind, Jessica's mother.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 SECOND:
  + On the opposite side of the stairs from the Poet, beside a door are BANGERZ
    and MASH.
    - Find out what they are doing (talk to Mash first).
  + You have to get into Jessica's room, but you won't be able to get past our
    two small warriors.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 THIRD:
  + Go through the door beyond the top of the left half of the stairs.
    - Find Wayfarer's Clothes.

  + Go up to the attic and throw all the pots and barrels.
    - You'll find:
      * Seed of Magic ...... RECOMMEND: Keep the Seed of Magic for Jessica.
      * 18 G.
      * Moonwort Bulb.

  + Talk to the maid who is scared of mice.
    - You see a hole in the wall and a mouse running around.

    - Send Munchie through the hole.
      * Jessica is NOT in her room.
      * Have Munchie pick up the letter on Jessica's desk.
      * return through the hole.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 FOURTH:
  + Talk to MASH and BANGERZ again.
    - At first they don't believe you.
    - Bangerz checks and finds that Jessica has gone.
    - The letter convinces them that Jessica has gone to the Tower.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 FIFTH:
  + When BANGERZ joins your party to help you get into the EAST TOWER:

    - SAVE!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ OPENING THE EAST TOWER +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Head to the East Tower.

  + Turn left when you leave the Village.
    - Keep going straight toward the East.
    - When BANGERZ says to try the door "if you don't believe me."
      * Talk to him instead of trying the door.
        > You won't be able to open it anyway!

RECOMMEND:

  + After the door is opened, ZOOM (if Courage = 8; or use a Chimaera Wing) to the
    village.

  + SAVE!!

  + Then use WHISTLE to fight battles until you have enough gold to buy the
    following:

    1 X Stone Axe      @ 550 G =   550 ... Yangus
    1 X Leather Kilt   @ 220 G =   220 ... Yangus
    1 X Scale Armour   @ 350 G =   350 ... Hero.
    2 X Scale Shield   @ 180 G =   360 ... For both Yangus & Hero.
                                ______
                         Total = 1,480 G
                                ______

 NOTE 1: You should already have some Gold from the journey to Alexandria.

 NOTE 2: The monsters in the tower are more difficult to defeat.
         + The above equipment means that they won't cause as much damage.

         + It will take 20 - 30 minutes to get enough Gold.

         + Both Hero and Yangus should be at about Level 9 by the time you are
           done WHISTLING.

 NOTE 3: Don't immediately sell weapons:
         + Keep the GIANT MALLET in Yangus's personal inventory, until you can
           get a better Club.

         + Keep the COPPER SWORD in Hero's inventory, until you can get a
           better sword.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ REMINDER: SKILL DEVELOPMENT +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Skill Points are NOT given at random.

  + There are a set amount of Skill Points at each Level Up.

    - Starting with Level 4, Hero gets 2, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3 (17 by Level 10).
      * That should give Hero DRAGON SLASH (3rd item on the list below).

    - Hero should be at Level 9 or 10 by the time he has completed the second Quest
      in Alexandria's East Tower.

~ HERO:

    1st.  "Swords"   =  4 ......... +5 attack WHEN EQUIPPED WITH A SWORD.
    2nd. "Courage" = 8 ......... ZOOM (warp to previously visited towns).
    3rd. "Sword" = 9 ......... DRAGON SLASH (extra damage to dragons).

~ To get these skills, assign Skill Points as follows:

  NOTE 1: in Farebury region you probably got to at least Level 7, possibly 8.

  NOTE 2: Because Jessica joins at EXP Level 9, you don't want to get higher than
          Level 12 before getting to Peregrine Quay.

  NOTE 3: For now, just keep assigning Skill Points to Swords until total points

~ Yangus gets far more Skill Points than Hero

  + Starting with Level 4, Yangus gets 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5,  (24 by Level 10).

    - This will give him HEAL.
      * It is useful to have more than one party member have this spell.

    - And one more Skill Point (Level 10 will give him 6 MORE) and he will have
      HELM SPLITTER.
      > Just continue giving the Skill Points to Axes for now.

    - Yangus should be at level 9 or 10 (just before Hero gets there).

  + HELM SPLITTER is very useful against BOSS monsters.
    - A decrease in defense means each ally's hits will cut more of an
      enemy's HP.
    - Lowered defense effect lasts for several turns in the battle.

  + Continue adding points to Axes:
    - Axes = 19 (Yangus gets HATCHET MAN).
    - Axes = 26 (Yangus gets an increased chance of making a critical hit).

RECOMMEND:

~ Return to the village to make preparations for the tower.

  + Because:
    - The 'ups and downs' you have to do to get through the tower means more time
      inside.
   AND...
    - The stronger monsters in the tower.

~ If you don't have enough Gold to get the equipment, WHISTLE up some battles.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ Alexandra's Tower is complicated because some doors are blocked, others are
  locked.
  + You have to go up in one tower then cross over to the other, up another floor
    and then back again.

  + The following maps are not to scale because /\ does not form a right-angle.
    - However, although you can find a map for the tower, only one floor shows
      at a time.
      * That doesn't make it easy to go through.
      * So rough drafts are shown below.

  + FUNGHOUL's pink breath may send one or more characters to sleep to miss
    a turn.
    - When it hits with its head, it may also cause sleep.
      * If the person is already asleep, they may fall into a deeper sleep
        (lose an additional turn).

  + FROGFACE, hit once, turns to show its evil face when it is more dangerous.
    - Try to make sure it is hit twice during each turn of the battle.

+                             +
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

~ It's night when you get back to the village.
  + Remember: you cannot get into the mansion at night.

  + Go to the inn and talk to Bangerz.
    - He and Mash have used their pocket money (allowance) to pay for the night's
      stay.

  + In the morning:
    - Talk to the people, they have different things to say.

    - Go to Jessica's house.
      * Go up the stairs and talk to Bangerz and Mash (still in front of Jessica's
        door).
      * Go to where Jessica's mother was sitting earlier.

~ VIDEO:

  + You see Jessica and her mother.
    - Before you can do anything, the poet tells you not to interfere.

  + Jessica and her mother are quarreling.
    - Finally her mother tells Jessica, she no longer has a daughter and Jessica is
      cast out.

    - Before she leaves, she collects her things and gives Bangerz and Mash a new
      assignment:

      * Guard the village.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  WHERE'S JESSICA? +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Go into Jessica's room, up the stairs and get her outfit from the cabinet.

  + Find Bangerz and Mash and talk to them.

    - Jessica has heard a rumor and has gone to Port Prospect.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ PREPARE TO TRAVEL +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ JESSICA STARTS AT LEVEL 9

~ RECOMMEND:

  + IF YOU DON'T WANT YANGUS & HERO TO GET TOO FAR AHEAD (two Levels are okay) YOU
    MAY WANT TO USE:
    - Holy Water to stop weaker monsters.

    - Probably won't stop any enemy party that has FENCING FOXES in them.

~ If Hero & Yangus are at LESS THAN Level 11, WHISTLE up some battles to get
  the two of them equipped.

~ HERO's equipment:
    Weapons ..... BOOMERANG (equipped); COPPER SWORD (in inventory).
    Armour ...... SCALE ARMOUR; SCALE SHIELD; LEATHER HAT.
    Accessory ... SLIME EARRINGS.

~ YANGUS's equipment.
    Weapons .... STONE AXE (equipped); HEAVY MALLET (in Inventory)
    Armour ..... LEATHER KILT; SCALE SHIELD; LEATHER HAT.

~ ITEM BAG:
  + SUPPLIES:
        Medicinal Herb.
        Antidotal Herb.
        Amor Seco Essence (if you have some).
        Holy Water.
        Chimaera Wing (if you wish to return to FAREBURY or ALEXANDRIA).

  + OTHER:
      * Keep up to 2 LEATHER SHIELDS.
      * Keep the BANDANA.

      * Sell WAYFARER'S CLOTHES.
      * Sell LEATHER ARMOR.

~ SEEDS:
  + Use the SEED OF AGILITY on YANGUS.

  + Keep the SEED OF STRENGTH for Jessica.

+ LONG JOURNEY  +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ There's no other way to get to Port Prospect but to walk.

  + If you haven't yet picked up the T.Chest North-East of Alexandria, do so now.
    - Make sure you avoid the Notorious Monster ($6).
      * Even at Level 10-12, you don't have enough HP to beat it.

  + On the way to Port Prospect get the two T.Chests (#).
    - But avoid the second Notorious Monster ($7)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ ADDITIONAL MONSTERS +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ You may encounter additional monsters...
  + IF you go down to the BEACH area to get one of the T. Chests.
 AND...
  + If you don't renew the Holy Water protection.

  + Only go to the WEST end of the beach (the end closer to Port Prospect).
    - Stay away from the water's edge.
    - That way you'll avoid the Notorious Monster.

~ Regular monsters that can be defeated (remember, the number is the one that
  appears in the Monster Lists under MAIN MENU -- MISC.).

  + These appear on the beach.

~ The YABBY is like a huge floating Shrimp.
  - Because of its shell, it has higher defense, so it's a little harder
    to defeat.
  - It also dodges frequently.

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ THE MOUNTAIN PATH +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Before entering Port Prospect, take a side trip through the mountain gap to
  the right of the port's entrance (as you come down the road).

~ Later, you will be following this path, but at the moment it is blocked by
  huge boulders.

  + Find and talk to the two men near the rock slide.
    - The earthquake that shook Trodain caused the slide.

    - Chimaera Wing
    - Medicinal herb
    - Seed of Wisdom ............. Keep for Jessica
    - 17 Gold
    - Holy Water

~ Read the book in the Inn.
  + It tells of a "Ship in the Dunes."
    - You'll find out more when you can get through the blocked mountain pass.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ STORES IN PORT PROSPECT +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Trail supplies (#1 on the map):

    __________________________
    | Medicinal Herb |   8 G |
    | Antidotal Herb |  10 G |
    | Holy Water     |  20 G |
    | Chimaera Wing  |  25 G |
    |________________|_______|

~ Weapon/Armour Shop (#2 on the map):

    ___________________________
    | Stone Axe       | 550 G | ... Yangus
    | Iron Lance      | 750 G | ... Hero
    | Farmer's Scythe | 240 G | ... Yangus
    |-----------------|-------|
    | Leather Kilt    | 220 G | ... Yangus
    | Scale Armour    | 350 G |
    | Scale Shield    | 180 G |
    |_________________|_______|

~ RECOMMEND:

  + Buy a SCYTHE for YANGUS.

    - Don't bother to buy the IRON LANCE for HERO.
      * I was not very impressed by the spear skills and this is a very weak
        weapon, so you may skip this one.
      * There's a better spear in Simpleton in the Maella Region.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ THE HERB SELLER +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ the Herb Seller is located at #6 on the map.

  + She charges 10 G for all her herbs.
    - The type of herb you receive each time you pay is randomized.

  + May get only a Medicinal (normally 8 G.) or Antidotal Herb (normally 10 G.).

  + But you may get:
     - Strong Medicine (worth 88 G.)
     - Strong Antidote (worth 95 G.)
     - Moonwart Bulb (can buy elsewhere for 30 G.)

   + It is worth spending 50-100 G.
     - And coming back again several times.
       > use ZOOM and choose Port Prospect.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+  LOCATE JESSICA +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ Inside the Port Entry building (#7).

  + Go up the stairs to talk to the people at the bar.

  + Go to the top of the building and talk to the man at the railing outside.

  + Talk to the people on the ground floor.
    - Particularly the man in the black hood.

  + Approach Jessica and the man she is talking to.

WARNING:

~ BE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE EQUIPMENT YOU NEED BEFORE APPROACHING JESSICA.

  + and have HEALED & SAVED!!

  + If you go and get supplies AFTER you approach her, you'll have to see the Video
    over again.

 NOTE: Jessica is determined to go after Dhoulmagus.
       - She has heard that there was a man (Dhoulmagus??) walking on the sea.

VIDEO:

~ As soon as you approach Jessica you overhear a conversation.
  + Jessica is arrogantly demanding that the Ferry Boat Captain launch immediately.
    - But he's afraid of what her family will say.
    - Definitely does not want to risk Jessica against the Ocean Monster.

  + Just then, she spots our Hero.
    - She sweetly talks to Hero and asks him to fight the monster for her.
    - Without waiting, she tells the Quartermaster she has the solution.

~ As soon as the video is over, talk to her again and tell her that you're ready to
  go.

  + The ferry moves out into the channel and attracts the BOSS monster.
    - You see bubbles rising in the water.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ BOSS: KHALAMARI +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ This monster is like an enormous Squid.

  + It complains of the people sailing over its head.

  + It has a 'split' personality:
    - Its head and its two main tentacles talk to each other (in different voices)!

    - Its stats: HP 360; MP 255.

    - It gives: 311 EXP; 230 G.; a Gold Bracer.

  + Its skills:
    - "Mow down" causes 12-16 damage to all.
    - "Slap" (with a tentacle), causes 18-22 damage to one.

~ WATCH HP LEVELS AND USE HERO TO HEAL.

  + Have Hero alternately FIGHT and HEAL.

  + Have Yangus PSYCHE UP three times (to 5, to 20, to 50) then use HELM SPLITTER.

    - This will usually reduce Khalamari's defense.
      * Each non-psyched hit with the Axe cuts 20-35 off the enemy's HP.
        > Depending on the experience level of Yangus.
      * A 'double' psyched hit cuts 90-110 HP (more than 3 regular hits)
      * A 'Triple' psyched hit cuts 160-170 (about 8 regular hits).

    - Repeat AS NEEDED (probably two times).

~ When Khalamari is defeated, Dhoulmagus's evil curse is vanquished.
  + Khalamari comes out of its daze claiming its mind was "all cloudy-like".
    - Returns to its normal, sweet but confusing 'split' personality.
    - There now seem to be more than three voices?!?

~ The Ferry returns to Port Prospect.
  + Jessica won't join your party until you are ready to get on to the ship.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+ GET READY FOR THE MAELLA REGION +
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

~ HEAL AT THE INN.
  + You'll find that Trode is still tinkering.

  + SAVE!!!

~ Talk to the monster in the well again.
  + He's glad his Boss has returned to normal.

~ Equipment:

  HERO:   BOOMERANG; SCALE ARMOUR; SCALE SHIELD; LEATHER HAT; GOLD BRACER;
          COPPER SWORD; IRON LANCE (if you bought one).

  YANGUS: STONE AXE; LEATHER KILT; SCALE SHIELD; LEATHER HAT; SLIME EARRINGS;
          GIANT MALLET; FARMER'S SCYTHE.

~ Return to the Ferry.

  + Jessica joins your party.
    - You will be able to upgrade her armour and weapons in Peregrin's Quay.

VIDEO: As Jessica, Hero and Yangus head onto the ferry, Trode is angry because
       he thinks they are leaving without him.

+ 3.1-A. THE VOYAGE TO PEREGRIN QUAY +
+                                     +
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

VIDEO:
  + Yangus tell how he meets Hero.

  + He tried to hold up Trode and Hero to pay for crossing 'Yangus's bridge'.
    - Trode is mad, because the bridge is in his Kingdom of Trodain.
      NOTE: "Wet your Knickers." = "Pee your pants."

  + Yangus tries to fight but his axe hits and damages the bridge.
    - All in our party make it across before the bridge breaks.
    - Yangus is left literally dangling over the river.

  + Trode says the bandit has gotten his "just desserts".
    - But Hero hauls Yangus up, much to the disgust of Trode.

  + So now Yangus thinks of Hero as the 'Guv' (Governor, i.e., Yangus's boss).
    - You get a bird's eye view of the scene and Trode is going on and on and ...

~ When the video ends:

  + Talk to the people on deck.
    - Make sure you speak to the man in the black hood.

  + Go down to the Captain's cabin, collecting goodies on the way:
    - Seed of Agility
    - Seed of Life ........ Keep for Jessica
    - Medicinal Herb
    - Antidotal Herb
    - Another Medicinal Herb
    - 12 G.
    - Pot Lid
    - 10 G.
    - Bronze Knife ........ needed for the first recipe in the Alchemy Pot.

~ Talk to the Captain who is annoyed with Trode.
  + Then, talk to Trode.
    - The Alchemy Pot is now available for use (but you have to wait until you get
      to Peregrin Quay).

   THE FERRY ARRIVES AT PEREGRIN QUAY...
