~ Most RPGs have characters develop magic skills.
  + Developing weapon skills is generally a function of the weapons themselves.
    - Either a weapon can evolve.
   OR
    - Better weapons can be bought.


~ Dragon Quest VIII does things a little differently:
  + The four main characters develop the weapon skills as another form of magic.
    - As the CHARACTER evolves, more skills can be developed.
   AND...
    - Those skills can be applied to newer and better weapons.

  + So the emphasis is not on the WEAPON, but on the SKILL developed by the
    individual character.


~ One other difference is that each of the main characters develop unique sets
  of skills based on the weapons each character is able to use.

  + Where two characters can use the same weapon:

    - For example, Jessica & Angelo can both use Staves:

    - There may be some overlap, but the complete set of staff skills is unique
      to each.


~ One aspect of the game (where very little infomation is given) is in the
  development of these weapon skills.

+  1-1.A. TYPES OF SKILLS  +

~ Each character can develop a total of five sets of skills.

  + The first three Skills for each character are determined by the weapons that
    character can use.
    - The fourth skill for all is 'Fisticuffs', that is, where no weapon is
      equipped (but the skills learned may be different for each character).
    - The fifth skill is unique to each individual.

~ Each time a person's EXP total is enough to bring them to a new EXP LEVEL, they
  recieve skill points.

  + The skill points *must* be assigned to the various types of skills.
    - The number of skill points ranges from 1 to 9 or 10.
    - You can assign points to one or more skills in the same turn.

  + To use the developing weapons skills requires the appropriate weapon to be
    equipped.
    - That's why each character needs to carry one of each weapon in their
      personal inventory at all times.
      * Then, as they get a better version of a weapon, simply exchange it.
    - If they need to use a diferent set of skills during battle, selecting ITEMS
      allows them to equip a different weapon.
    - They DO NOT LOSE their turn if they do this.

~ Suppose you forget how many skill points are needed to get to the next level
  of Skill Development?

  + At Port Prospect, You can speak to a woman in a booth near the armor/weapon
    shop.
    - She will tell how many more skill points are needed to develop each skill
      for each person currently in the party.
      * You have to work with her for one person at a time;
      * But you can review all five of that person's skills.

  + Another woman who does the same is in the Seaview Church, standing close to
    the Nun who provides an overnight stay.
    - You get to Seaview Church when you have your own ship.

~ Starting with Level 4, Hero & Yangus gain Skill Points.

  + Jessica starts at EXP Level 9; Angelo at EXP Level 12.
    - So they start getting skill points at their next level-up.


~ Each skill can be built to a total of 100 Skill Points.
  + To get ALL FIVE to 100 probably requires each character to get to at least
    one hundred Experience levels!
    - So you will need to choose carefully.
    - This FAQ shows ALL of the skills that can be developed.


  NOTE: there is an optimum  development for Hero and Yangus at the beginning
        of the game.
        - This development gets the skills most needed by the two characters
          into play early in the game.
        - It is addressed in the FAQ:

      Swords ........ A weapon for one-on-one battle.
      Spears ........ A weapon with different action, but also one-on-one battle
      Boomerang ..... A throwing weapon which affects all enemies.
      Fisticuffs .... Unarmed battle.

      Axes .......... A weapon for one-on-one battle.

~ All characters have a 'Fisticuffs' (bare-handed) skill.

  + FISTICUFFS MEANS NO WEAPONS CAN BE EQUIPPED.
    - Unless you really like fist fights, you may wish to leave developing this
      set of skills until last.

  + To unequip all weapons:
    - Move the cursor to the equipped weapon in the character's inventory.
    - Press [X] then select REMOVE.

  + The character will now be able to use any learned Fisticuffs Skills.
    - But the weapon will still be in the personal inventory in case it is needed
      during battle.
    - It can be equipped (choosing ITEMS) in Battle.

  + Hero, Jessica & Angelo learn some Magic Spells during the Leveling Up process.
    - Yangus only learns three or four spells BUT THEY ARE THROUGH SKILL
      DEVELOPMENT NOT, REPEAT NOT THROUGH LEVELING-UP.

  + Hero and Yangus are on their own for quite some time, so it is important to
    get their skills developed in the optimal way.

     25  ATTACK POWER......... +10 Boomerang Attack Power.

     32  FIREBIRD THROW ...... (fire attack).

     52  SUPER THROW ......... (more powerful attack).

2. SWORD SKILLS.

   + Sword skills are useful against single enemies.
   + One of the most useful (METAL SLASH) is helpful to defeat Metal Monsters
     which give high EXP points.
     - If you can get and equip the Falcon Sword OR the Uber-Falcon Sword,
       Hero will hit twice.
   + GIGAGASH replaces GIGASLASH.

      4  ATTACK POWER ........ +5 attack when equipped with a sword.
      9  DRAGON SLASH ........ Extra damage to dragons.
     15  FLAME SLASH ......... Fire attack.
     22  ATTACK POWER ........ +10 Attack Power for Sword.

     30  METAL SLASH ......... Hits to metal enemy for 1-2 points.
     40  CRITICAL HIT ........ More chance of a Critical Hit with Sword.
     52  FALCON SLASH ........ Double hit against one enemy.
     66  ATTACK POWER ........ +25 Attack Power (sword).

     82  MIRACLE SLASH ....... Returns HP to Hero.
    100  GIGASLASH ........... Group damage, 155-230.
    100  GIGAGASH ............ High group damage, 220-280 (with Courage = 100).

3. COURAGE SKILLS.

   + The two [MP] Skills:
     - The second [MP] skill replaces the first.
     - Reduces the amount of MP needed by Hero when casting spells.
       * Once learned, the skill is in force at all times, Field, Town, or Dungeon.

      8  ZOOM ................ Return to a place previously visited.
     16  TINGLE .............. Cures SLEEP & PARALYSIS during battle.
     28  HOLY PROTECTION ..... Keeps monsters away for a perions of time.
     40  FIZZLE .............. Prevents enemies from using magic.
     48  ZAP ................. Lightning Attack.
     56  [MP] ................ Reduces required MP for spells to 3/4.
     70  KAMIKAZEE ........... Sacrifice Hero's life to defeat all enemies.
     82  OMNIHEAL ............ Restores all HP to all allies.
     90  [MP] ................ Reduces required MP for spells to 1/2.
    100  KAZAP ............... Very strong lightning attack.
    100  GIGAGASH ............ (with Sword = 100) High damage, group.

4. SPEAR SKILLS.

   + I was not impressed with the Spear as a weapon, you may prefer to upgrade
     the BOOMERANG, SWORD, & COURAGE first (since you can't do everything).
     - LIGHTNING THRUST and LIGHTNING STORM, were pretty good, but it takes time
      to build to those skill levels (59 & 100).

      4  ATTACK POWER ........ +5 Attack Power with Spear.
      7  MERCURIAL THRUST .... Attacks one enemy.
     12  THUNDER THRUST ...... May do critical damage to one. 
     18  ATTACK POWER ........ +10 Attack Power.

     25  MULTITHRUST ......... A number of thrusts to one or more enemies. 
     34  CRITICAL HIT ........ Increases chance of Critical Hit.
     45  CLEAN SWEEP ......... Group attack.
     59  LIGHTNING THRUST .... May do critical damage.

     77  ATTACK POWER ........ +25 Attack Power.
    100  LIGHTNING STORM ..... All enemies.

4. FISTICUFFS SKILLS.
 
   + All skills are provided Hero is unarmed:

      4  ATTACK POWER ........ +5 Attack Power (no weapon is equipped).
     11  DEFENDING CHAMPION .. Reduces damage.
     17  STONES THROW ........ Rocks hurled at a group.
     24  KNUCKLE SANDWICH .... Bare fist strike.

     33  ATTACK POWER ........ +20 unarmed Attack power (no weapon is equipped).
     42  THIN AIR ............ Vortex slices through group.
     52  CRITICAL HIT ........ Increases chance of unarmed Critical Hit.
     70  MULTIFISTS .......... Four-hit strike, single enemy.

     82  BOULDER TOSS ........ Shower of boulders; all (may replace STONES THROW).
    100  ATTACK POWER ........ +50 unarmed Attack Power (no weapon is equipped).

  + Yangus develops Healing skills through his HUMANITY skills.
    - Theses are:
      HEAL ........... At HUMANITY = 10.
      MIDHEAL ........ At HUMANITY = 68.
      KERPLUNK ....... At HUMANITY = 82.


    NOTE: KERPLUNK resurrects ALL fallen allies with full HP BUT AT THE COST OF
                   HIS OWN LIFE.

                   - Angelo can then use KAZING to resurrect Yangus.

1. HUMANITY SKILLS.
   + His HUMANITY enables him to develop magic skills.

      4  WHISTLE ............. Brings any number of battles to the allies.
     10  HEAL ................ Restore about 30 HP to one ally or self.
     16  NOSE FOR TREASURE ... Find treasures (I never got it to work).
     22  WARCRY .............. May paralyze one or more enemies, miss 2-3 turns.
     32  SHARE MAGIC ......... Gives MP to one ally.
     42  KABUFF .............. Raise party's defense for several turns.
     55  UNDERPANTS DANCE .... May shock one or more enemies; they miss a turn.
     68  MIDHEAL ............. Restore about 70-85 HP.
     82  KERPLUNK ............ Resurrects all fallen allies with full HP.
